Authors: Steve Olusegun Bada, Mamman Umar, Mukhtar Jimoh
      Pages: 1 - 15
Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the Self-esteem and Gender influence as predictors of academic achievement in Basic science and  Mathematics among secondary school students’ in Katsina state. The total sample size is two hundred and ninety-one (291) SSS One  students which comprised 161 male and 130 female students selected from three schools in Mani Educational Quality Assurance Zone,  Katsina state. Purposive sampling technique was used to select three public senior secondary schools. The instrument used to collect  data was titled Rosenberg SelfEsteem Scale (RSES), with Cronbach’s alpha reliability co-efficient of 0.79. Basic Education Certificate  Examination (BECE) results of 2019/2020 session were used to determine their academic achievement. Analysis of data was carried out  using frequency, mean, percentage, bar and pie chart, non-independent t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that there was significant difference in self-esteem and academic  achievement between Basic science and Mathematics. Also, there was significant difference in academic achievement based on gender in  Basic science and Mathematics among the students. The study concluded that students with high self-esteem participated  enthusiastically in the learning process and were more confident, active and motivated towards learning and performed better in  examination as compared to those students with low self-esteem. It was recommended that teachers and parents should give both  gender equal opportunities to work independently and improve themselves toward a particular task and avoid giving preferences to one  gender over another which could affect their self-worth in learning.

Authors: Hammed Popoola Aminu, M.I. Abdullahi
      Pages: 16 - 28
Abstract: Social anxiety has been recognized as one of the salient psychological problems among secondary school adolescents. Many of them lack  the confidence to demand for their rights and the ability to express their opinions without fear. This study thus examined the effect  of cognitive restructuring counselling technique on social anxiety among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State,  Nigeria. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design which involved pre-test, post-test design. The population of the study comprised  three thousand, seven hundred and forty-seven secondary school students (3,747) who were identified with social anxiety in Ilorin  metropolis. The purposive sampling technique was used to select (10) socially anxious students that participated in the study. Social  Anxiety Scale (SAS) adopted from Yahaya and Nyarko-Sampson (2016) was used to collect relevant data for this study. Data were analysed  using mean, standard deviation, t-test and MANCOVA statistics. The findings of the study revealed that cognitive restructuring  counselling technique had effect on all the three components of social anxiety studied among secondary school students in Ilorin  metropolis that is: the physical component (t = 2.84; p < 0.05), the behavioural component (t = 3.24; p < 0.05) and the cognitive  component (t = 2.05; p < 0.05). The study unveiled that gender was not a significant factor for responses to treatment among the  participants of the study CRCT (f =0.563; p > 0.05). The study concluded that cognitive restructuring counselling technique was effective in  reducing social anxiety among secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis irrespective of its components and gender of participants.  Based on these findings, it was recommended among other things that, school counsellors/psychologists should make effective use of  cognitive restructuring counselling technique in addressing social anxiety among secondary school students.

  • Influence of peer pressure on delinquent behaviours of in school
           adolescents in Kwara State

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: M. Ajokpaniovo, A.O. Awoyemi, F.A. Okesina, F. Anyanwu
      Pages: 30 - 41
Abstract: Adolescents have needs and problems that arise from organic, psychological and social pressures. These pressures in turn exert  influences on them, which makes them exhibit behaviours that are not in consonance with the societal norms leading to delinquency.  This might be the reasons why in-school adolescents involve themselves in delinquent behaviours such as examination malpractice,  bullying, stealing, truancy, destruction of school properties and even drug use. The problem of delinquent behaviour affects in-school  adolescents irrespective of gender, family type and parents’ literacy level though the degree and magnitude vary from school to school.  Thus, this situation calls for concern in order to avert further challenges the phenomenon could exert on the society. This paper  examined the influence of peer pressure on delinquent behaviour as expressed by in-school adolescents in Kwara State. A researcher  deigned questionnaire entitled “Peer Pressure and Delinquent Behaviour Questionnaire (PPADBQ)” was used to collect necessary data  for the study. The t-test was used to test the three null hypotheses. Two were accepted while one was rejected. The findings of this study  showed that peer pressure did not exert much influence on delinquent behaviour as expressed by in-school adolescents in Kwara State.  Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that school authorities should reinforce in her mode of enforcing school  rules and regulations as this will go a long way to reduce students’ misbehaviours in school.

Predictors of Risky Sexual Behaviours among Adolescents in Enugu State,
           Nigeria

      Authors: Ndidi Mercy Ofole
      Pages: 43 - 65
Abstract: This study examined the relationship between personal factors (sexual self-efficacy, sexual risk-cognition, social intelligence) and risky  sexual behaviours among in school adolescents in Enugu State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw 400 students (male=184; female=216) with age range of 15–19 years (x̄=17.01; SD=2.66) from the target population. Four standardized self- report questionnaires were used for data collection. The results showed that there was no significant difference in risky sexual behaviour  of male and female participants. There was significant difference in involvement in risky sexual behaviours between students in rural and  urban secondary schools (Crit-t 1.002, Cal.t 1.987, df=398, P<0.05). There was negative linear relationship between the personal factors  (sexual selfefficacy, sexual risk-cognition and social Intelligence) and risky sexual behaviour. Further, of the three independent variables,  social intelligence (α = .456, t= 7.069, P<0.01) was most potent protective factor against risky behaviours followed by sexual self-efficacy (α  =.866, t = 13.442, P<0.01). Sexual risk-cognition did not effectively predict risky sexual behaviours. Constructs considered in the study  accounted for 10.2 % of the variance in adolescents’ risky sexual behaviours. It was recommended that counselling psychologists should  enhance the sexual selfefficacy, sexual risk- cognition and social intelligence of in-school adolescents since these factors were found to  have the likelihood of protecting them against risky sexual behaviours.
