  • A Systematic Review of Problematic Internet Use in Children, Adolescents,
and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This systematic review was conducted to identify the literature examining the prevalence of problematic internet use (PIU) in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the difference in prevalence of PIU between those with and without ASD, and the correlates of PIU in ASD. Ten studies were identified. The eight studies with comparison groups reported that individuals with ASD had more symptoms of or scored higher on PIU. Correlates of PIU included time spent online and age at which individuals first went online, as well as depression, inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, opposition, and escapism. Results indicate that additional research is needed to examine PIU in adults with ASD and the causal relation of factors related to PIU in ASD through longitudinal studies.

  • Technology-Based Assessments and Treatments of Anxiety in Autistic
Individuals: Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This systematic review (Prospero Registration Number: CRD42019142910) aimed to narratively synthesise technology-aided assessments and treatments of anxiety in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for the first time. Sixteen studies were identified: 5 assessment studies and 11 treatment studies. Assessment studies targeted state anxiety using ecological momentary assessment, wearables, or computerised tasks. Treatment studies targeted specific fears/phobias using electronic screen media or transdiagnostic anxiety using telemedicine. Broadly, results indicated technology-aided assessments and treatments may be feasible and effective at targeting anxiety in ASD, except treatments involving social scripts or peer modelling. Assessment results further indicated that state anxiety in ASD has a distinct psychophysiological signature and is evoked by idiosyncratic triggers. However, larger scale studies with representative samples are needed.

  • A Review of Research Studying Film and Television Representations of ASD

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract An increasing number of characters with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are appearing in film and television, leading to increased public perceptions of ASD. This review examined the current state of research focused on ASD representations in film and television, and the extent to which characterizations of ASD have been studied. Eighty-seven characters with ASD were discussed across the 26 articles. Characters were culturally and linguistically diverse, and portrayals of ASD appear to be moving away from typical disability-tropes. Researchers studying ASD portrayals were also culturally and academically diverse, with the majority representing fields outside of traditional ASD research disciplines. Connecting diverse methodological procedures may be a useful next-step to enhance empirical studies of ASD representations.

  • Effectiveness of Different Types of Augmentative and Alternative
Communication (AAC) in Improving Communication Skills and in Enhancing the
Vocabulary of Children with ASD: a Review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Communication deficits are one of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems are utilized to facilitate the communication and language development of children with ASD. This review examines the research literature on the use of aided and unaided AAC systems in interventions for children with ASD, and investigates their effectiveness in enhancing language and communication skills in this population. Systematic review methodology was used to limit bias in the search of electronic databases, and relevant studies were selected, 20 of which met the inclusion criteria for the review. The findings of these studies indicate that AAC systems are able to facilitate and enhance communication skills in children with ASD. It is apparent that this is a method that will be used increasingly in the future, and it is imperative that meticulous research is conducted on the effects of the applications. Refinements in the study methodology are recommended, and additional questions that might be addressed in future research are discussed.

  • Apps to Teach Social Skills to Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder:
A Review of the Embedded Behaviour Change Procedures

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Social skill interventions have become increasingly popular in recent times, as well as the use of technology to deliver and aid interventions for the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) population. Little research exists on the use of apps to teach social skills to individuals with ASD, in particular the behaviour change procedures that exist within apps. The current review examines the behaviour change procedures that exist within apps according to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Task List, 5th Edition. A total of 15 apps were included within this review. Results indicate that a variety of behaviour change procedures exist within apps. However, the quality of apps and the number of behaviour change procedures vary across app developers.

  • Temporal Synchrony in Autism: a Systematic Review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Temporal synchrony is the alignment of processes in time within or across individuals in social interaction and is observed and studied in various domains using wide-ranging paradigms. Evidence suggesting reduced temporal synchrony in autism (e.g. compared to neurotypicals) has hitherto not been reviewed. To systematically review the magnitude and generalisability of the difference across different tasks and contexts, EBSCO, OVID, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched. Thirty-two studies were identified that met our inclusion criteria in audio-visual, audio-motor, visuo-tactile, visuo-motor, social motor, and conversational synchrony domains. Additionally, two intervention studies were included. The findings suggest that autistic participants showed reduced synchrony tendencies in every category of temporal synchrony reviewed. Implications, methodological weaknesses, and evidence gaps are discussed.

  • A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials on Healthy
Relationship Skills and Sexual Health for Autistic Youth

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Background This systematic review investigated the state of intervention science on programs that promote healthy intimate relationship skills and sexual health for autistic youth (i.e., healthy intimacy). Methods Using PRISMA guidelines, we reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2010 or later that enrolled ≥ 1 autistic adolescent participant. Results Of 1934 articles returned, three met inclusion criteria: Supporting Teens with Autism on Relationships, Tackling Teenage Training, and Peers Engaged in Effective Relationships-Decision-Making. All increased content knowledge and one improved social/ behavioral functioning. Conclusion We identified three RCT-supported interventions for autistic youth that teach healthy intimacy skills. Comparative effectiveness research on these programs would benefit the field.

  • A Comparative Analysis of Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) Literature on
           the Autism Crisis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Autism is a neurobiological developmental disorder that is detected at around 3 years old. This disorder affects their communication, socialization, and behavioral skills. Its ratio is 1 per 150 and the possibility is greater for boys (2 girls for every 6 boys). A bibliometric analysis, comparing documents in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, has been carried out. It includes some new features such as the evaluation of growth, maturity, conceptual and intellectual maps and trends of a scientific community on top of the bibliometrics traditional approach. This study shows that, although the interest in different aspects related to autism is very high (from the year 2000), there is a significant lack on the prevention or prediction crisis topic.

  • Electrophysiological Studies of Reception of Facial Communication in
           Autism Spectrum Disorder and Schizophrenia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZ) are characterized by difficulty with social cognition and atypical reception of facial communication—a key area in the Research Domain Criteria framework. To identify areas of overlap and dissociation between ASD and SZ, we review studies of event-related potentials (ERP) to faces across ASD and SZ populations, focusing on ERPs implicated in social perception: P100, N170, N250, and P300. There were many inconsistent findings across studies; however, replication was strongest for delayed N170 latency in ASD and attenuated N170 amplitude in SZ. These results highlight the challenges of replicating research findings in heterogeneous clinical populations and the need for transdiagnostic research that continuously quantifies behavior and neural activity across neurodevelopmental disorders.

  • Have We Been Comparing Theory of Mind in High-Functioning Autism to
Patients with Chronic Schizophrenia: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Introduction Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and schizophrenia represent different mental disorders, but intriguing similarities seem to appear. Objective In the present meta-analysis, we examined theory of mind (ToM) impairments in adults with ASD or schizophrenia based on studies that have compared the two patient groups directly by using the same test-battery at the same time point. Results Ten studies were included with a total of 344 ASD patients and 339 schizophrenia patients. We found no significant difference in ToM, but patient characteristics such as severity of mental illness and disorder heterogeneity may have influenced the results. Conclusions The limited number of studies emphasizes the need for further direct comparisons of ToM in ASD and schizophrenia with awareness of social cognitive subgroups in both disorders.

  • Systematic Review of Technological Aids to Social Interaction in Autistic
Spectrum Disorders from Transversal Perspectives: Psychology, Technology
           and Therapy

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Multiple technological aids have been proposed to support the social interactions of people with autism. The literature is extensive, but in many of the works there is a lack of clear processes focused on improving social skills. In this paper, we analyse a selection of 57 technological supports from the last 10 years, whose main characteristic is the quality and clarity of the design and evaluation processes. The objective is to provide the research community with a complete and interdisciplinary mapping of the main technological supports applied to social interaction, identifying the existing relationships between different axes of analysis: the psychological theories that support each approach, the types of technology used and the therapeutic models applied.

Probiotics, Prebiotics and Synbiotics in Autism Spectrum Disorder

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a constellation of social communication problems in addition to unusual and repetitive behaviors. In this review, we aimed to investigate the effects of probiotics, prebiotics or synbiotics on gastrointestinal (GI) and behavioral symptoms of ASD. We searched the relevant literature in several electronic databases. In total, 344 children with ASD were investigated in this review. The results of this review demonstrated significant effects of the intervention with probiotics and prebiotics on all domains of Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) score. There were also different reports about their beneficial effects on the improvement of gastrointestinal symptoms, although a need for more clinical trials with the same doses and types of microorganisms is also highlighted.

  • Interactions Between Teachers and Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
in Mainstream Secondary Education: Fundamental, yet Under-Researched

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study aimed to identify which aspects of teacher-student interactions contribute to a successful inclusion of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mainstream secondary classrooms. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Eight studies fulfilled our criteria, and we identified teacher-related and student-related themes. Most of the included studies did not focus on interactions between teachers and students with ASD, but on requirements that could influence these interactions. Teachers often seemed to infer the needs of students with ASD during their interactions, which, as we illustrate, may not always be in line with their actual needs. We discuss the implications of this gap in the literature and how to bridge this gap.

  • Developing Inclusive Playgrounds That Welcome All Children—Including
           Those with Autism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Playgrounds are crucial spaces where children can develop within their formative years. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) require additional support that caters to their sensory and social needs. A systematic literature review identified design characteristics to transform a play space into an environment where physical, social, and personal growth for children of varying abilities is encouraged. To model these recommendations, an examination of a playground was conducted with suggestions adapted to develop an accessible play environment. Results showed that there is a need for outdoor play spaces that engage children in building and maintaining relationships with peers. Providing equitable access to play allows people to come together due to a shared need for connectivity.

  • COVID-19 Pandemic and Autism Spectrum Disorder, Consequences to Children
and Adolescents — a Systematic Review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract In this systematic review, we aimed to identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children/adolescents with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The protocol was registered on PROSPERO CRD42021255848. Articles were selected from PubMed, Embase, and LILACS according to these characteristics: patients from zero to 18 years old, exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic, impact on social communication/interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior domains. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was used to assess methodological quality and the risk of bias. Of the 351 articles initially identified, 26 were finally included with information on 8,610 patients. Although the studies were heterogeneous, they indicated that the pandemic-related issues experienced by patients with ASD were mostly manifested in their behavior and sleep patterns.

  • Screening for Intellectual Disabilities and/or Autism Amongst Older

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract There are many well-developed screening tools for both intellectual disabilities and autism, but they may not be culturally appropriate for use within Africa. Our specific aims were to complete a systematic review to (1) describe and critically appraise short screening tools for the detection of intellectual disabilities and autism for older children and young adults, (2) consider the psychometric properties of these tools, and (3) judge the cultural appropriateness of these tools for use within Africa. Six screening tools for intellectual disabilities and twelve for autism were identified and appraised using the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) guidelines. We identified two screening tools which appeared appropriate for validation for use within African nations.

  • Behind the Wheel: Systematic Review of Factors Associated with Safe School
Bus Transportation for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract School buses facilitate access to education for many children. This research aimed to systematically review factors associated with safe school bus transportation for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Searches of 5 databases, combining terms denoting NDDs and school buses, for English publications since 2000, yielded only 12 relevant articles among 1524 records. Literature was limited to parent-based studies, guidelines, reviews or commentaries. There was scant attention to the immediate roles of bus drivers and aides. Literature recommendations included increased attention to the needs of children with NDDs and improved communication, collaboration, support and training across all key stakeholders, particularly to improve implementation of individual child safety plans. Further research is needed on this critical support service for many families.

The objectives of this work are to (a) identify and describe the characteristics and components of interventions aimed at improving play skills in children with ASD and their TD peers, (b) examine the role of peers in interventions, (c) evaluate intervention effects, and (d) identify potential moderating variables that may influence intervention outcomes. Twenty single-case experimental design (SCED) studies published between 2000 and 2020 were included and summarized. The majority of interventions produced significant effects, further supporting the inclusion of TD peers in interventions targeting play skills for children with ASD. Recommendations for future research and practice are discussed.

  • A Systematic Review of Healthcare Professionals’ Knowledge,
Self-Efficacy and Attitudes Towards Working with Autistic People

Abstract: Abstract Healthcare professionals play a vital role in identifying and supporting autistic people. This study systematically reviewed empirical research examining healthcare professionals’ knowledge, self-efficacy and attitudes towards working with autistic people. Thirty-five studies were included. The included studies sampled a range of countries and professional backgrounds. A modified quality assessment tool found the quality of the included studies was moderately good. Narrative synthesis indicated that healthcare professionals report only moderate levels of autism knowledge and self-efficacy, and often lack training. Variation within and between countries and professional background was not explained by demographic factors. The reviewed evidence suggests health professionals’ limited knowledge and self-efficacy in working with autistic people is a challenge to the provision of healthcare for autistic individuals.

Abstract: Background Many youth are not meaningfully engaged in their school-based transition process. Understanding youth’s perceptions of their engagement and factors influencing engagement is important to increase engagement. Design A search of six databases produced 975 studies; 11 which were included. Inclusion criteria: Qualitative research on youth’s perspectives of the transition process in the United States; youth’s primary disability is not intellectual or physical disability. Analysis: Applied guidelines for study quality and content analysis of results sections. Results Youth described interactions and personal factors that contribute to disengagement in transition planning. Yet, youth have transition-related goals and preferences and take actions during transition. Conclusions Findings highlight the complex social structure of IEP teams and potential ways to expand transition-related interventions.
