  • "I don't think there is much racism left": A critical analysis of White
           adolescents' (un)awareness of white privilege.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The current article uses theories and perspectives from critical whiteness studies to investigate how white adolescents’ (N = 69, Mage = 15.91 years) narratives of white privilege are implicated in the maintenance (and disruption) of white supremacy. Contrary to scientific and public narratives that position white youth as “unaware,” we find that 90% of participants (n = 62/69) in the present study were aware of and named white privilege. However, qualitative analysis revealed the ways in which white youth’s awareness of white privilege was disconnected from a critical examination of systems of power or their own racial identities. Disconnected awareness of white privilege reinforced white supremacy via three manifestations; white adolescents were aware but (a) untroubled by privilege, (b) forgetful of privilege, and (c) avoidant of responsibility to address privilege inequities. Our findings emphasize that awareness of white privilege alone does not just pull white adolescents in the direction of antiracism or toward an antiracist white identity. Using critical whiteness studies, we discuss the implications of our findings for burgeoning developmental theories, models, and research on white identity and antiracism, and the need to advance a critical study of whiteness in developmental psychology. • Healing among Indian poor faced with distress of forced internal
           migration: A qualitative study.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The literature on the interdisciplinary approaches to mental health within psychology and psychiatry indicates that for a person living amid structurally induced (shaped by hierarchies of class, gender, religion, race, etc.) distress, the process of healing entails developing an enabling meaning in life, often facilitated by cultural beliefs or values. Based on this premise, in this ethnographic study, we explore the socioculturally contextualized experiences of healing among those poor Indian villagers who are forced to migrate to cities as unskilled migrant laborers in search of livelihood opportunities. The narratives of 40 participants generated through semistructured interviews were analyzed using constructivist grounded theory. The findings show (a) reaffirmation of relational self by carrying out one’s sociomoral roles and responsibilities, (b) adherence to socioreligious values (e.g., choosing righteous path), and (c) brighter sides of migration (e.g., better opportunities for children’s education) being salient aspects of the healing process. The findings draw our attention to design mental health intervention programs for the migrant laborers that amalgamate culturally situated healing besides the policy measures for their checking migration-induced miseries. • Arts-based phenomenological research: Theory and praxis.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this introduction to the special section on arts-based phenomenological research, we argue that incorporating artistic methods into phenomenological research design is a natural manifestation of the essential nature of phenomenology. F. Wertz (2022) called for psychology’s important task of articulating the philosophical underpinnings of our empirical research methodologies. Thus, we first justify arts-based phenomenological research by rooting its methodology in phenomenological philosophers’ deep appreciation for art across history, many of whom praised art as an ideal phenomenological language to express the essence of a lived experience in its originally concrete, visceral manifestation. Then, we demonstrate how phenomenological philosophy translates to research methodology, including arguments for the value of art and the aesthetic when doing phenomenological research. We introduce the four arts-based phenomenological research projects published in this special section, all of which incorporate artistic creation in various aspects of their phenomenological research methods—including data collection, interpretation, dissemination, and self-reflexivity. Each contributing author describes their unique methods and procedures of embracing arts-based phenomenological research to describe lived experiences in a manner that remains faithful to Husserl’s phenomenological call to “go back to the thing themselves” in producing knowledge about human experience. We conclude by positioning arts-based phenomenology as an interdisciplinary qualitative methodology that belongs in both the human sciences and the psychological humanities, inviting phenomenological researchers to interrogate the link between the human sciences and humanities and to explore how phenomenological research as art can hold vast power for knowledge and transformation. • Sometimes, indirect is more direct. An aesthetic–apophatic
phenomenological approach to self-reflexivity in qualitative inquiry.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this article, I present a six-step, multimodal approach to self-reflexivity responsive to hiddenness in research. This approach harnesses making and reflecting to live research questions indirectly and to connect with dimensions that are hard to capture in words. In research, we sometimes travel along hidden corners that are hard to access. I introduce the concept of “meandering,” highlighting indirect (= apophatic) approaches to inquiry where curving around the object of study is central. I choose my approach to be aesthetic–apophatic phenomenological inquiry. My self-reflexive inquiry titled “Living Off Landscapes” (Jullien, 1995) demonstrates my approach and is shared from the view that inner work manifests in public acts like our research. Using François Jullien’s concept “sceneries of living” heuristically, I live various questions and felt concerns related to my movements through European and North American higher education landscapes as a faculty member, educational program director, and artist–researcher. The process of aesthetic–apophatic inquiry guides researchers living their questions and concerns through six movements of alternating experiential and concept-led phases of reading, making, and reflection. • DESI EROS: Reclaiming South Asian erotic power through arts-based
           phenomenology and Hindu epistemology.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: DESI EROS is an arts-based phenomenological research project with a decolonial agenda that sought to answer the question: How is erotic power experienced in the contemporary lives of diasporic Desi (South Asian) women, in light of our cultural contexts and colonial histories' Phenomenological descriptions were collected from six participants about their lived experiences of reclaiming erotic power as Desi women. Each participant’s description was interpreted for essential meanings via hermeneutic data interpretation. These essential meanings were then expressed artistically as acrylic paintings as a visual interpretation of what reclaiming erotic power means for each participant. The phenomenological paintings include ancient folk symbolism that reveals essential meanings of South Asian erotic power in our indigenous cultures—in the beliefs and practices of our precolonial South Asian traditions, faiths, and ancestors. The arts-based phenomenological research findings are published at https://www.desieros.com for public dissemination; each painting is accompanied by an essay about indigenous meanings of South Asian erotic power, as revealed by the arts-based phenomenological research process. Key to this research study’s decolonial efforts is not only a reclamation of indigenous South Asian sexualities but also of indigenous Hindu epistemologies. This article describes the researcher’s decolonial–transpersonal method of doing arts-based phenomenological research, by which she entered a meditative state of consciousness while painting akin to the receptive state of the Indian yogi, through which divine revelations were received intuitively about essential meanings of the phenomenon of South Asian erotic power. Accordingly, this article positions arts-based phenomenological research as a transpersonal method of inquiry by comparing Western phenomenological research methods to Eastern (Hindu) spiritual practices of knowledge acquisition. In doing so, it reflects on notions of epistemic justice and knowledge democracy amidst Qualitative Psychology’s movement toward decolonization. • The phenomenology of joy: Insights from the imagery in movement method.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In three qualitative studies of joy, the imagery in movement method was employed as an arts-based phenomenological research methodology to illicit nonverbal expressions of joy through color and form. Through a mapping process, participants explored their drawings to identify metaphors or tropes that were represented in the expressive artwork. Through these discussions, participants identified memories of experiences of joy that were then rendered into narrative descriptions. Participants then acted out their narratives to assist with making their experiences more vivid and to assist with translating these lived experiences into verbal and written expression. Once the data were collected, they were analyzed with a descriptive phenomenological approach. The studies examined states of joy and trait joy, as well as adult recollections of joy in childhood. The imagery in movement method was found to be especially helpful for assisting adults to tap into experiences of joy in their youth by starting with their intuitive felt sense in expressive techniques, which helped the adults to recover vivid memories of childhood experiences of joy. Emergent themes across the three studies included joy’s quality of expansiveness, connectedness or intimacy with others, shifts in time-consciousness, playfulness or spontaneity, feeling affirmed or nurtured, a sense of freedom or openness, and a contrast of joy with a past or present sense of brokenness. • Entering the womb house: Bringing visibility to women’s lived experience
of pregnancy loss through an imaginal-hermeneutic method of research.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Arts-based phenomenological research methods can offer transformative ways to dwell deeply with another person and the stories they carry, to be changed together through the process of research, and to give back to those who generously entrust and share their stories with us as researchers. The imaginal-hermeneutic method presented in this article is an innovative arts-based phenomenological approach that was developed as an intentional way of meeting the sensitive, implicit, and culturally invisible aspects of women’s lived experience of pregnancy loss on their own terms. The method integrates the tracking of implicit dimensions of participants’ narrative testimonies through drawing and the creation of a visual transcript, which was then brought back to participants for a deepening, dialogal, collaborative conversation with each participant. The drawings provided an imaginal bridge between the explicit and implicit and a powerful third perspective within the generative transitional space between researcher and participant. The image work was thus central to collaborative data interpretation with participants and was data itself insofar as it revealed further profiles of the phenomenon. A mood of reverence for the intimate and disclosive otherness of the drawings and an ethic of reciprocity became essential features of the shared experience of the method, which recruited and affirmed intuitive ways of knowing already recognized in the arts and depth psychology. • Black girls don’t cry' Mental health, gender, and violence on
           the racialized periphery.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increase in mental health struggles among Black girls, with concurrent increases in interpersonal violence in this group. However, there has been limited research into the structural, environmental, and psychosocial risk factors associated with these increases. A lack of understanding of these dynamics has left a gap in the implementation of targeted mental health and violence prevention/mitigation strategies for this sociomedically vulnerable population. Using semistructured interviews with staff at five high schools in the metropolitan Chicago area (n = 32), including teachers (n = 14), administrators (n = 9), and security officials (n = 9), we assessed perspectives on the mental health profiles and violence involvement of Black teen girls using abductive analysis and constant comparative methods. Respondents consistently indicated that violence was either more frequent among Black girls or felt more intractable, relative to (Black) males or other non-Black female students. Primary risk factors discussed included Black girls’ recurrent exposure to neighborhood deprivation and limited psychosocial and institutional support. Black girls who perpetrate or are victims of violence face complex identity formation challenges that are amplified by mental health challenges resulting from broader racial and gendered structures. School and community-based interventions must consider the intersectional complexities that entrench mental illness and violence in this population as a clustered co-occurring phenomenon, focusing on structural and in-school supports and adult stakeholder trainings around implicit bias and cultural humility. • The gendered racial and sexual socialization experiences of young Black
           women: A qualitative study.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Children often receive their first understanding of the nuances of society and how to navigate their experiences from parents and family members. Parents and family members of Black children have the additional task of teaching their children how to navigate through society as a Black person. The present study used grounded theory methods to explore the racial and sexual socialization messages young Black women received using multigenerational transmission process and social learning theory as theoretical frameworks. Messages related to the expectations of their roles in these relationships included five selective categories: (1) the expectation to put others’ needs before their own; (2) the importance of financial independence; (3) prioritizing the needs of their male romantic partner; (4) hiding and/or downplaying their sexuality; and (5) successfully managing work relationships. Findings related to how these socialization messages impacted participants in young adulthood included three selective categories: (1) Long-term impact of racial and ethnic socialization by family members; (2) desire to have more nuanced conversations with family members; and (3) the realization of wants and needs within relationships. Clinical implications and future areas of research are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
