  • Introduction to a special issue on prayer and communication with the
divine, the sacred, the departed, and the demonic in spiritually oriented
           therapy.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Since the dawn of time, people from around the globe have tried to communicate with the divine, the sacred, the saints, and deceased ancestors, family, and friends. Most people have prayed and many have reported experiences that make them believe that communication with the immaterial spirit world, broadly defined, is possible. Given the universality of these behaviors, beliefs, and practices, it is surprising that the psychological literature on these phenomena is so limited. The purpose of this special issue is to explore available research and practice in this area that may be useful for researchers and clinicians a like in their work with those impacted by attempts to communicate with those who are unseen. We hope that this issue will stimulate further research and writing about this topic to move the literature forward in an evidence based manner. • Psychopathology, normal psychological processes, or supernatural

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Many people believe that they have received after-death communications (ADCs) from deceased loved ones, and some bereaved individuals may disclose such experiences to their therapists. This can be a challenging area to navigate, especially given stigma around ADCs, uncertainty around their interpretation, and possible worldview differences between therapists and clients. This article illustrates how clinicians might frame ADCs through three different lenses: mental illness, psychological, and supernatural. I outline potential pros and cons of each lens and offer tentative suggestions about how each might be effectively applied in therapy. The mental illness lens frames ADCs as possible hallucinations, delusions, or other psychological or medical symptoms. Although this lens can help to identify and treat serious conditions, its overuse may lead to dismissal and pathologizing of ADCs and can contribute to stigma, along with inaccurate psychiatric diagnoses and treatments. The psychological lens, which frames ADCs as normal psychological phenomena, allows the deep exploration of potential meanings, predictors, and consequences of ADC, but some people may find that excessive analysis or sharing of these extraordinary, perhaps ineffable experiences strips them of personal impact or transcendent meaning. The supernatural lens, which frames ADCs as actual messages from the deceased, may provide reassurance, hope, and inspiration by suggesting or confirming positive afterlife beliefs and opening the possibility of continued communication with deceased loved ones; however, supernatural framing might also introduce problems such as disorienting worldview shifts, burdensome or frightening messages, or overreliance on external sources such as spirit mediums in the pursuit of ADCs. • Spiritual experiences in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy: Case reports
of communion with the divine, the departed, and saints in research using
psilocybin for the treatment of alcohol dependence.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Psychedelic substances have been central to religious and shamanic healing practices of various cultures for generations. More recently, in western medicine, psychedelic substances have demonstrated promise in the treatment of various mental health indications. A growing evidence base supports not only the therapeutic potential of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, but also the importance of integrating spiritual aspects of psychedelic experiences into the traditional therapeutic process. Psilocybin, a classic psychedelic, is a serotonergic hallucinogen that can elicit profound spiritual experiences even in the research setting. Our group is currently conducting a randomized controlled trial exploring the therapeutic potential of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for alcohol dependence. Over the course of the trial, many individuals have reported experiences that take a variety of forms, including spiritual insights, beatific visions, and communion with the Divine. Here we present three case studies of experiences involving communion with a deceased loved one, with a holy figure, and with the Divine from our clinical trial. These cases have been selected to illustrate the diverse nature of the spiritual experiences observed in this clinical trial, and to also explore elements of spiritual care that may be supportive in the psychotherapeutic process during and after the medication experiences. Should psychedelic medicine continue to show treatment promise in clinical trial stages, there is a strong possibility that these medicines will become an integral part of psychotherapy, which will require integration of direct spiritual experiences and spiritual care into the healing process. • Ancestral healing in psychotherapy.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ancestor worship is part of many world cultures, and healing ancestral trauma has become a nascent interest amongst therapeutic practitioners. This practice case report shares a brief description of energy healing as an indigenous tradition, and introduces a rationale for integrating intergenerational trauma healing work in the context of psychotherapy with diverse multicultural clients. One practitioner shares personal and clinical experiences, having worked with clients and students over decades of practice using chakra healing modalities. An example of engaging ancestral energy and imagery in a therapy session is described. Recommendations for research and practice are given. • Mental illness, normal psychological processes, or attacks by the
devil' Three lenses to frame demonic struggles in therapy.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Beliefs in supernatural evil have been widespread throughout human history, and they remain so today. Yet conversations about demonic struggles—tensions and conflicts involving beliefs and experiences regarding the devil, demons, or evil spirits or forces—may make many people uneasy, including therapists. Still, demonic struggles have clinical relevance: Not only do many people experience these spiritual struggles, but they are linked with emotional distress. Demonizing others also introduces risks of serious interpersonal conflict and harm. This article uses a hypothetical case example to explore how therapists might view demonic struggles through three lenses: mental illness, psychological, and supernatural. Each lens has strengths and limitations and will lead to different emphases in assessment and treatment. The mental illness lens can uncover serious psychological or medical conditions but runs the risk of pathologizing demonic struggles. The psychological lens, which emphasizes normal psychological processes, can identify background and situational factors that set the stage for demonic struggles. Psychological approaches may encourage clients to consider effects of demonic attributions and struggles, perhaps revising or supplementing their coping strategies when demonic beliefs are causing problems. The supernatural lens, which focuses on the possibility of actual demonic activity, is likely to be much less familiar for most therapists; we thus devote extra attention to it here. Some clinicians may feel comfortable integrating this lens (e.g., prayer; spiritual warfare tactics) in therapy or pursuing clergy collaboration. Here we highlight some serious risks and cautions around this lens, especially around the controversial practices of exorcism and deliverance. • Conceptual and clinical implications of a “Haunted People
           Syndrome”.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Evidence suggests that subjective and objective anomalies associated with ghostly episodes form a unidimensional Rasch scale and that these interconnected “signs or symptoms” arguably describe a syndrome model. This view predicts that symptom perception—that is, the phenomenology of these anomalous episodes—can be markedly skewed by an experient’s psychological set. This is impacted, in turn, by psychosocial variables that affect attentional, perceptual, and interpretational processes. Therefore, we present an overview that discusses how (a) Belief in the Paranormal, (b) Religious Ideology, (c) Ideological Practice, (d) Social Desirability, (e) Latency, and (f) Environmental Setting ostensibly influence the contents or interpretations of accounts. These experiential details are similarly expected to reveal insights into the psychodynamics being expressed or contextualized via these narratives. Future research in this area should help to validate and clarify the proposed syndrome model, as well as explore which nuances in the phenomenology of ghostly episodes reflect idiosyncrasies of experients’ psychological set versus the nature of the core phenomenon itself.
