  • Preference for harmony: A link between aesthetic responses to combinations
           of colors and musical tones.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Individual differences in the preference-for-harmony (PfH)—the tendency to prefer stimuli that represent “good gestalts”—have been found to be relatively consistent across domains of aesthetic judgment. In the present study, we built upon these findings by showing that PfH for color combinations is strongly associated with PfH for isolated musical chords. We also showed that ratings of the harmoniousness of chords are best predicted not by their objective harmonicity—the extent to which their constituent partials resemble a harmonic series—but rather, by their freedom from spectral interference and their familiarity. Additional analyses confirmed that individual differences in PfH are specifically pertinent to aesthetic judgments and not a product of a generalized desire to avoid ambiguity in cognitive processing (i.e., a need for closure). In summary, the results of the study suggest that PfH represents a relatively unique cross-modal influence on aesthetic responses, one that meaningfully contributes to preferences for musical chords. • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this work, we study the emotional link between music and color as well as the relationship that pleasure and familiarity have with music-evoked emotions, emphasizing on what happens with atonal music. This is important, since it is already known the role of music's mode (major or minor) on determining the perception of musical emotion for tonal music and, thus, its association with color. We decided to use Russell's (1980) multidimensional emotional scale model to assess music and colors, together with the four dimensions of the perceptual characteristics of color (Red-green, yellow-blue, saturation, and brightness) used by Palmer et al. (2013). Our results showed that atonal music shares a behavior similar to that found by Palmer et al. (2013) for tonal music, specifically, that music evaluated as joyful is linked to the colors perceived with that same emotion (saturated, light, and yellow), and sad music is linked to sad colors (desaturated, dark, and blue). Therefore, these findings reaffirm the importance of emotion on mediating the music-to-color association in both tonal and atonal music. Regarding our other variables, we found a positive correlation between pleasure and familiarity as well as between pleasure and emotional valence, although half of the music evaluated as sad (negative valence) was also evaluated as pleasant. • MoodyTunes: A mixed methods usability study of an app for adolescent
           mental health.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people around the world, with depression as a major driver of these numbers. However, a substantial percentage of young people with depression do not seek professional help. As people in this demographic report listening should be to up to 5 hrs of music per day, music has the potential to serve as an effective method of reaching young people and increase their mental health literacy. MoodyTunes is an in-development mHealth app that aims to increasing mental health awareness in young people and to inform young people about how music can be used as an effective tool for self-regulating mood. Here, we report a mixed methods usability study of MoodyTunes in which a sample of young people (N = 20, age range: 12–25) experienced the app for the first time. A think-aloud method was used to evaluate the app, alongside quantitative survey responses, automated facial analysis data, and interview data. Survey data indicated that the app was perceived in a positive manner, and as effective and well-functioning, whereas aesthetic appeal received the lowest score. As hypothesized, women and younger participants displayed more positive emotions while using the app. Qualitative data indicated several positive aspects such as links to mental health resources and the ability to share music with others, but also highlighted the need to improve the aesthetic appeal, ease of use, and capacity to personalize the app. Future considerations and approaches for mHealth apps, as well as limitations in the present study, are discussed. • Music listening and emotion regulation: Young people’s perspectives on
           strategies, outcomes, and intervening factors.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the emotion-regulation strategies that young people use when listening to music and the factors that influence the effectiveness of these strategies. Focus groups were conducted with young people aged 13 to 25 years to explore these questions using a general inductive approach. Participants used a variety of strategies including selecting mood-matching music, mood-reducing music, or mood-incongruent music to manage antecedent states of depression, anxiety, and tiredness. Intervening factors that modulated the outcomes of these strategies included the severity of prior mood, features of the music, and individual capacity for using effective emotion-regulation strategies. Findings highlight the need to support individuals to use effective mood-regulation strategies using music and to increase their awareness of the effects that music can have on affective states and well-being. • Song properties and familiarity affect speech recognition in musical
           noise.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: “Cocktail party” speech perception is largely studied using either linguistic or nonspeech noise maskers. Few studies have addressed how listeners understand speech during concurrent music. We used popular songs to probe the effects of familiarity and different inherent properties of background music (i.e., isolated vocals, isolated instruments, or unprocessed song) on speech recognition. Participants performed an open-set sentence recognition task in the presence of familiar and unfamiliar music maskers (−5 dB signal-to-noise ratio [SNR]) composed of the full unprocessed song, only the instrumentals, or only the vocals. We found that full songs negatively affected recognition performance more so than isolated vocals and instrumentals. Surprisingly, there was also an interaction with music familiarity; well-known music impaired performance in the homologous full song and instrumental conditions. Our results show strong effects of song component and familiarity on speech recognition ability, highlighting interactions between both physical and psychological characteristics of musical noise on task performance. Familiarity impairs speech perception when background music features the instrumentals with or without the vocals. Our findings have implications for understanding the possible facilitation (or interference) of background music during concurrent linguistic tasks including academic study in attempts to promote learning. • Investigating the moderating role of presentation mode on simultaneous
           consonance.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Converging evidence from a series of recent lab and corpus-based studies has suggested that a composite model, including a number of predictors that are either intrinsic (e.g., spectral interference) or extrinsic (e.g., cultural familiarity) to chord structure (Smit et al., 2019), best accounts for pleasantness judgments of isolated chords (i.e., simultaneous consonance; Harrison & Pearce, 2020). In the present study, we aimed to explore whether the effects of the 2 most prominent intrinsic predictors in this literature, spectral interference (SI) and harmonicity, are moderated by the presentation of constituent chord tones to both ears (diotically) versus different ears (dichotically). To this end, we conducted 2 experiments in which we presented participants with a set of dyads and collected consonance ratings for each under both diotic and dichotic presentation conditions. To reduce extraneous variance due to chord familiarity, we selected dyads from an unconventional tuning system, the Bohlen–Pierce Chromatic Just scale. Results replicated earlier findings suggesting that both SI and harmonicity independently contribute to consonance judgments of unconventionally tuned chords. Moreover, they provided new evidence that the association between harmonicity and consonance is reliably moderated by presentation mode: In both experiments, the magnitude of this positive association was bolstered when Bohlen–Pierce Chromatic Just dyads were presented diotically rather than dichotically. There was no evidence that presentation mode moderates the association between SI and consonance. Discussion focuses on potential implications of these findings for understanding the low-level processes by which SI and harmonicity independently contribute to simultaneous consonance.
