  • The voices of Chinese American parents during COVID-19: Recommendations
for addressing anti-Asian racism and supporting adolescents in school.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a rise in anti-Asian sentiment, discrimination, and hate crimes, which have consequences for Asian American students and their families. As school districts prepared to reopen in Fall 2021, discussions and plans largely emphasized preventing infection and disruptions to learning. Asian American families’ discrimination experiences and their recommendations for schools to address possible COVID-19-related racial bullying and discrimination have been overlooked. The present study is based on semistructured interviews conducted between April and June 2020 with 47 Chinese American parents with adolescents ages 12–17 years. Thematic and content analyses revealed significant parental concerns about adolescents’ experiences with bullying and discrimination as well as a widespread fear for family safety. Parents’ school recommendations reflected their desire for school administrators and staff to take a firm stance against COVID-19-related anti-Asian discrimination while treading carefully on race topics for fear of singling out Asian American students. This study emphasizes contextual factors that influence adolescents’ experiences of racial discrimination during the early stages of the pandemic and advocates for a more holistic approach to addressing students’ learning and psychological well-being that elevates the voices of impacted families. • Sociodemographic and precipitating circumstances associated with suicide
among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: A survival analysis.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to understand the contributing factors associated with completed suicides among the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population, especially culturally specific risk factors. Drawing on previous theoretical and clinical research related to AAPIs, this study included seven life events preceding suicide, including suicide attempt history, alcohol and substance use problem, physical health problem, job problem, interpersonal violence, and family relationship problem, while controlling for the effects of gender among AAPIs. Utilizing the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), the sample consisted of 1,428 AAPI suicide decedents from 2008 to 2018. The risk and protective factors were analyzed using interval-censored survival analysis. The analyses indicated that substance abuse (Hazard Ratio = 2.000, p < .001) and completion of high school and beyond (Hazard Ratio = 1.517, p < .001) were associated with the highest increases in suicide risk for AAPI. Suicide attempt history was also a significant predictor of completing suicide (Hazard Ratio = 1.211, p ≤ .05) but suicide decedent with a physical health problem was at a lower risk of completing suicide (Hazard Ratio = 0.396, p < .05). The findings highlight how substance abuse, family relationship problems, and educational pressures may be associated with suicide risk. With these factors in mind, we discuss opportunities to help people in the AAPI population to develop coping skills earlier, address shame and guilt, and navigate high-pressure working environments. • Interaction of unrestricted mobility, perceived discrimination, and
self-critical perfectionism on depressive symptoms of Asian American
           college students.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: As a component of the model minority stereotype, unrestricted mobility (UM) refers to the notion that Asian Americans do not face racism and related barriers, and as result, the academic and career successes experienced by Asian Americans are relatively easier to obtain as compared to other racial/ethnic groups (Yoo et al., 2010). The present study examined the relationship between UM and depressive symptoms with attention to the potential moderating roles of perceived discrimination and self-critical perfectionism. The study builds from the self-discrepancy theory in which the interaction of internalized UM, perceived racial discrimination, and self-critical perfectionism was expected to relate to depressive symptoms. This three-way interaction model was tested with a sample of 203 Asian American college students using SPSS PROCESS Macro (Hayes, 2013). As hypothesized, results indicated that the harmful effect of UM on depressive symptoms depended on the degree of perceptions of perceived discrimination and self-critical perfectionism. Specifically, at high levels of perceived discrimination and strong tendencies of self-critical perfectionism, UM was positively associated with depressive symptoms. This finding highlights the mental health costs of UM with implications for a nuanced approach when targeting issues regarding the model minority stereotype. Critical implications from the findings and future directions are further discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Examining racial discrimination, internalized racism, and racial–ethnic
           socialization among Asian American parents.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This study examined how Asian American parents’ experiences of racial discrimination and internalized racism were associated with domains of racial–ethnic socialization (RES). The study sample consisted of 121 Asian American parents (M = 41.79 years, range = 26–65 years). Using structural equation modeling, a path analysis was conducted to examine whether internalized racism moderated the link between experiences of racial discrimination and RES strategies. Results suggested that racial discrimination was negatively associated with internalized racism (β = −.22, p < .05), but not specific domains of RES; however, internalized racism was significantly associated with the following RES domains: becoming American (β = −.25, p < .05), minimization of race (β = .31, p < .01), cultural pluralism (β = −.41, p < .001), and promotion of equality (β = −.40, p < .001). Significant interactions between racial discrimination and internalized racism emerged, such that parents who reported high levels of racial discrimination and high levels of internalized racism were less likely to convey messages that minimized or denied racism (+1 SD; β = −.36, p < .05) and parents who reported high levels of racial discrimination and low levels of internalized racism were more likely to convey messages that minimized or denied racism (−1 SD; β = .20, p < .05). No other significant interactions emerged for other aspects of RES. The present study underscores the importance of considering internalized racism—a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination—and the role it may have on how Asian Americans convey messages of race to their children. • How the pandemic affected Filipinx Americans: Analysis on enculturation
levels, health care work, and mental health outcomes.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in numerous adverse mental health effects and subsequent disparities for many both in the United States and worldwide, which have been exacerbated in underrepresented and minoritized populations in the United States. The Filipinx American population makes up 4% of registered nurses in the United States, and more than half of the registered nurses of color who have died were FilAms. Given this disproportionate COVID-19 impact on the FilAm community, there is a need for disaggregated data of the diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. In our sample of 332 FilAms, we explored the relationships between the levels of enculturation, COVID-19 traumatic stress, and depression and anxiety. We found significant high levels of depression and anxiety within our sample. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the relationship between dimensions of enculturation (connection to homeland, interpersonal norms, conservatism) and mental health outcomes. Results indicated significant associations between COVID-19 fears and connection to homeland and interpersonal norms, and traumatic economic stress and isolation and disturbed routine with interpersonal norms. However, we found significant indirect relationships between conservatism and two dimensions of the COVID-19 traumatic stress (COVID-19 fears and isolation and disturbed routine). Results also predicted positive associations between interpersonal norms with depression and anxiety, but an indirect relationship with conservatism. This study underscores the importance of disaggregated AAPI health data and addressing the needs of the underrepresented FilAm community. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Self, ethnicity, and ethnic composition: Variations in self among Asian
           Americans and White Americans.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of context on the self-construal of Asian Americans and White Americans. Cross-cultural research has demonstrated differences in the self, including the independent self and interdependent self. However, less research has examined differences in the self within a culture and how differences may be related to situational factors. In the present study, we examined how Who Am I' (WAI) self-descriptions of 109 White Americans (28 men and 81 women) and 99 Asian Americans (36 men and 63 women) might vary depending on the ethnic composition in which they were situated (i.e., being in a minority vs. mixed vs. majority setting). Findings provided partial support for the three main hypotheses, with self-descriptions varying by ethnicity for WAI abstract, autonomous, and positive descriptions and by ethnic composition for WAI positive and novel descriptions, though no interaction between ethnicity and ethnic composition on our dependent variables emerged. Specifically, White Americans reported more WAI autonomous and abstract responses than did Asian Americans across contexts. However, with WAI positive and novel responses, ethnic composition mattered. White Americans and Asian Americans reported more WAI positive responses in the mixed and majority compositions compared to the minority composition. White American and Asian American participants provided more WAI novel responses in the ethnic minority and mixed compositions than in the ethnic majority composition.
