  • The influence of pressure on intention to commit fraud: the mediating role
           of rationalization and opportunities

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract To date, much of the current research has focused on examining the direct relationships between the components of the fraud triangle theory and fraud intention. However, limited empirical studies have explored the mediating effects of rationalization and opportunity. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of rationalization and opportunity on the direct relationship between pressure and fraud intention, as well as the relationship between pressure and opportunity. A sample of 166 managers participated in the study, and partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to test the proposed model and hypotheses. Results showed that pressure was positively related to both rationalization and fraud intention. Moreover, the relationship between pressure and fraud intention was found to be partially mediated by both rationalization and opportunity. Similarly, rationalization was also found to partially mediate the relationship between pressure and opportunity. These findings suggest that pressure can increase fraud intention directly, as well as indirectly through rationalization and opportunity. This study contributes to the current literature by shedding light on the interplay among the three key components of the fraud triangle theory and their effects on fraud intention. The study provides valuable insights for relevant stakeholders, both theoretically and practically.

  • Locating the future of ESG in India’s present sustainability
           framework

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract India’s present sustainability framework for corporates largely consists of scattered obligations across various legislative frameworks. The purpose of this study is to understand corporate response to different sustainability obligations in India. Through this, the study aims to understand if the CSR regime alone is enough to meet India’s sustainability requirements or if further changes are required. CSR disclosures of the top 25 fortune India 500 companies over 2 years are contrasted against their ESG risk rating per Indian and foreign ESG risk rating agencies. Findings indicate that all eligible companies are large proponents of CSR but are hardly in tune with the other sustainability obligations under Indian laws. Unfortunately, the impactful CSR regime does not appear to result in good ESG performances. In response to this finding, the paper concludes with recommendations to rectify the same.

  • Follow the leader': the relationships among corrupt leadership,
followers’ corruption tolerance, and workplace outcomes

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study used implicit leadership theory (ILT) as a lens for understanding corruption from the perspective of followers and in developing a model that describes the relationship among followers’ schema congruence with corrupt leadership, corruption tolerance, and subsequent work outcomes. Factors that describe characteristics of corrupt leadership were identified through interviews with eight employees and middle managers from different government and business sectors. A survey questionnaire was developed from the qualitative data and administered to 114 Filipino employees. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to confirm the hypothesized relationships among the variables. Qualitative results suggest that followers characterize corrupt leadership as selfish, unethical, and discreetly manipulative, but tolerate this for various reasons such as the fear of retaliation and personally benefiting from corruption. Quantitative findings indicate that followers’ corruption tolerance mediates the relationship between experiences of corrupt leadership and workplace outcomes. Followers who perceive greater corruption in their leaders and are more tolerant of corruption have negative attitudes toward their jobs and teams. The study highlights the need for organizations to monitor corruption among their leadership, establish feedback processes, and implement organizational mechanisms to address corrupt practices and attitudes. Leadership training and employee development programs that consider the influence of cultural norms on corruption tolerance and reporting as well as clearly describe ethical behavior may aid in reducing corruption tolerance and enhancing integrity in the workplace.

  • National philosophy and religion on corporate social responsibility/public
relations initiatives: a case study of Islamic influence in Brunei
           business system

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract National philosophy and religion can have a strong influence on a country’s business system, sociocultural environment, and corporate decisions. Islamic principles impose obligations on businesses and organizations operating in nations where Muslims predominate. This study uses Brunei as a case study to investigate how the national ideology of Brunei, Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB), and Islam influence the kinds of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives that companies take on and how they disclose CSR to the public. Content analysis of CSR-related information and documents available on corporate websites was used by this study and findings revealed that Islam and MIB have strong influences on CSR and public relations (PR) practices geared toward enhancing human capability and improving the socioeconomic welfare of communities to meet the national development goals. Islamic values have an impact on corporate culture, and as employees’ religious beliefs are integrated into the workplace, the business model usually aligns with the concept of CSR. In Brunei, organizations view CSR/PR as a strategic business, societal, and religious endeavor. Emphases are placed on building human capacity and wellbeing, reducing environmental issues, and engaging in altruistic initiatives. By exploring how national philosophy and religion influence a country’s business system and corporations’ CSR/PR practices, this study contributes to the body of knowledge on these study areas.

  • In search of religious individuals’ career success pattern: “to be
rich but not only for me”

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The present study examines the nexus of religiosity and two career-success elements: positive impact and financial success. The cross-sectional analysis from 985 individuals of various religious backgrounds in Indonesia reveals that collectively religiosity positively relates to the importance of both positive impacts and financial success. Positive impact importance also positively relates to financial success importance, and it partially mediates the relationship between religiosity and financial success importance. The partial mediation indicates that when religious individuals aim for financial success, they will use their financial resources for their own religious fulfillment and for others. This remark illustrates “to be rich but not only for me” phrase in the title. In addition to the combined results of four major religions (Islam, Christianity—divided into Protestantism and Catholicism—Hinduism, and Buddhism), we also explore each religion separately within this study.

  • Life insurance misselling and the influences of client attributes:
           evidence from China

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Prior studies have extensively explored factors that drive misselling behavior in life insurance markets, but considered little the influences of attributes of clients (particularly vulnerable clients) on unethical sales. Our study that is based on the neoclassical theory of the firm aims to investigate the relationships between attributes of life insurance clients and unethical selling behavior of salespeople. Applying logit and probit models to a sample of 35,075 observations from a Chinese life insurance company, our study finds that salespeople are more likely to perform unethical selling to ill-educated clients. Further, when salespeople’s sex and education are considered, the result shows that male or poorly-educated salespeople are more likely to make unethical selling. These findings enrich the literature of misselling of life insurance and offer some practical implications for both insurers and regulators to manage life insurance markets and control misselling behaviors.

  • Institutionalization of firm’s commitment to CSR—a mimetic
           isomorphism perspective

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The purpose of the study is to investigate whether internal and external institutional environmental conditions play a role in the institutionalization of strategic commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) among Indian firms in the wake of the mandatory CSR norms or not (where the firms of certain size and profitability are mandated to spend on CSR). The study examines the fixed effects regression on balanced panel data collected from the annual reports and Prowess database of Bombay Stock Exchange-listed firms. Our results show that both internal and external institutional environments play a major role in diffusing a strategic commitment to CSR among firms. Furthermore, we find that firms indulge in frequency, outcome, and trait-based imitations while learning from peer firms to attain legitimacy from their stakeholders. Overall, our findings show that vicarious learning through imitation plays an important role in making firms truly committed to CSR instead of just donating money or greenwashing. To the best of our knowledge, our study is among the pioneering attempts to look at the impact of both internal and external environments on institutionalizing CSR commitment among firms in India.

  • Ethics in product marketing: a bibliometric analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study aims to identify the ethical challenges in the process of product marketing. It conducted a bibliometric study to evaluate the major ethical concerns in the area of product marketing. The data for the current study was extracted using the Scopus database. The study uses VOSviewer and Biblioshiny-bibliometrix to analyze the data. The results revealed that in the twenty-first century, ethical concerns and research related to pharmaceutical marketing, consumption behavior, and sustainability have significantly grown and are emerging as important issues. The study is novel in its approach and develops a theoretical model to know ethical issues related to product marketing with multidimensional process (i.e., identification, search strategy, and analysis) for a long-term sustainable business success. By this study, the academicians and researchers will focus greater attention on the rapidly developing human-techno-centric world to fulfill the organizations’ service promises. The study contributes to the marketing ethics literature, particularly to the literature related to ethical issues in product marketing.

  • Workplace deviance among healthcare professionals: the role of destructive
           leadership behaviors and citizenship pressure

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Workplace deviance has long been a subject of discussion in various industries, including the healthcare sector. The poor working conditions in the nursing profession have made nurses feel pressured to perform more than their contractual tasks, resulting in job dissatisfaction, which has prompted them to engage in workplace deviance, which may jeopardize the hospital’s well-being and wealth. The negative behaviors exhibited by the nurses had a significant impact on hospital function, which may also endanger the lives of patients, which is an issue that warrants further investigation. The Pakistani nursing sector has been emphasized by the study due to the different working conditions in Pakistan as compared to Western countries. The nursing profession in Pakistan is different due to its dominant Islamic context. To elucidate the issue, this study aims to examine the influence of destructive leadership behaviors and citizenship pressure on job dissatisfaction among nurses and the influence of job dissatisfaction on workplace deviance. The role of job dissatisfaction as a mediator has also been examined. By adopting the quantitative approach, data were collected from 383 nurses in Pakistani Hospitals. Analysis was done using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings revealed that citizenship pressure and destructive leadership behaviors (i.e., laissez-faire, supportive-disloyal, and tyrannical leadership) are significant predictors of job dissatisfaction. Job dissatisfaction, in turn, was found to mediate the effect of citizenship pressure and all destructive leadership behaviors, except derailed leadership, on workplace deviance. The findings of the present study are theoretically and practically relevant as they provide new insights into the behavioral mechanisms that could be addressed to eliminate the occurrence of workplace deviance in the healthcare context.

  • Organizational moral learning by spiritual hearts: explorative cases from
           Brunei’s public sector

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Although there are several conceptions of organizational moral learning (OML), there is a need for more empirical studies. This study aims to provide illustrations of the dynamism of organizational moral learning by spiritual hearts (OML-SH), where OML and organizational immoral learning (OIL) are coupled antagonistically. Two OML-SH initiatives (i.e., the Quality Control Circle program and 100-hour training record system) within Brunei’s public sector are scrutinized to illustrate the dynamic process of OML-SH, spanning individual, group, and organizational levels. From the two exploratory case studies, the purifying mechanism was coined to capture the laminated interplay between the spiritual hearts, group understanding, leadership, organizational intention, structure, culture, and resources to drive OML. In contrast, the corrupting mechanism was also coined as the opposite force to drive toward OIL. From the study, leadership and organizational learning repositories were seen to play essential roles in the purification of the spiritual heart (i.e., individual moral development). Additionally, the spiritually diseased hearts occupying the two extremes of OML and OIL were seen to experience moral ambivalence, which was also not captured in previous studies. The paper concludes with suggestions to manage moral ambivalence for more positive outcomes, drive OML further and impede OIL simultaneously.

  • Review of the compliance of the mandatory corporate social responsibility
(CSR) by the Indian corporate sector

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract From the financial year 2014-15, the Indian corporate sector was made to comply with a newly introduced Sect. 135 (5) by the Companies Act of 2013. The rule required select companies to spend 2% of their average net profits on CSR initiatives. This paper tries to find if the companies have complied with the provision based on data for six financial years starting 2014-15. CSR performance of the top thirty companies forming part of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex was evaluated and a CSR Spend-to-Obligation (CSR SO) Index was calculated comparing the actual spend vis-à-vis the obligatory requirement. A quantitative and a qualitative methodology were used for the analysis. The quantitative method involved computation of the CSR SO index at various levels. The “quality” of the CSR expenditure was also assessed by speaking to twelve experts from the Corporate to find out if the expenditure was in the right direction. The results show that the aggregate average six-year CSR SO index for the 30 Sensex companies is 0.98, suggesting that companies comply with the requirements of mandatory CSR. Moreover, the experts confirm that CSR spending is in the right spirit and direction. It certainly has a long-term orientation and qualifies as quality spending. A novel CSR-SO index is presented that compares CSR performance by comparing actual CSR spending with obligatory requirements. This index can act as a barometer for CSR performance and facilitate objective evaluation. Additionally, the qualitative assessment of CSR spending shows a holistic approach to evaluating CSR.

  • Responsible innovation and resource-based theory: advancing an
antecedent-outcome model for large manufacturing firms through structured
           literature review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Technological innovations, despite their several benefits, may have drawbacks, thus, they need a control mechanism or directional channel. Responsible innovation (RI) has gained popularity in technology-intensive countries as a way to regulate otherwise uncontrollable and radical technological innovations. However, existing RI research lacks a clear theoretical foundation and has not adequately addressed the commercial and performance aspects of innovative products and firms. The current research proposes an empirically testable model for RI by conducting a structured literature review, focusing on the commercial aspect of innovative products and firms’ sustainability performance in the financial, social, and environmental dimensions. The study suggests a link between RI and the resource-based theory of the firm and proposes that RI can be seen as a distinctive competency developed through the firm’s resources and capabilities. The model would help enterprises achieve ethical and social acceptability and improve sustainability performance. Metadata examination of 98 articles yielded insights. • Compliance with and enforcement mechanism of labor law: cost-benefits
analysis from employers’ perspective in Bangladesh

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This manuscript offers a qualitative exploration aimed at proposing effective strategies for enhancing compliance with and enforcement of labor laws in Bangladesh by diminishing the incentives for non-compliance. The study relies on primary data obtained from statutes, legal decisions, and secondary data sourced from scholarly articles, books, and book chapters, among others. Employing a cost-benefit analysis approach from the employers’ perspective, the study contends that showcasing the superior costs associated with violating labor laws, in comparison to the benefits gained, will incentivize employers to prioritize compliance to safeguard their interests. To this end, the research puts forth eight distinct techniques or mechanisms to curtail the benefits derived from disregarding labor laws. These strategies are thoughtfully organized into two categories, namely “increasing the likelihood of self-enforcement” and “supporting by other actors.” The proposed techniques for enhancing compliance with and enforcement of labor laws in Bangladesh hold significant potential in benefiting key stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners in the field. Furthermore, the study’s findings carry valuable implications for other developing countries in the South Asian region, given their similar socio-economic and cultural contexts.

  • The impact of ethical leadership on organizational identity in digital
           startups: does employee voice matter'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Ethical leadership can lead to preparing the ground for employee voice, highlighting employees’ creativity, and encouraging knowledge-sharing behavior in the organization. Thus, this study examines the impact of ethical leadership on organizational identity with the mediating role of employee voice in digital startups. However, previous studies investigating the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational identity disregarded the intervening role of employee voice in this relationship. A cross-sectional design using a sample of 137 managers of digital startups in science parks. Through the PLS3 software, the results show that employees tend to discuss their work-related opinions and concerns more often if they consider their leaders trustworthy, and this can lead to competitive advantage and quick responses to environmental crises. According to the findings of this study, ethical leadership can prepare the ground for employee voice, highlight employees’ creativity, and encourage knowledge-sharing behavior in the organization. Hence, we suggest that leaders demonstrate personal integrity, openly receive employees’ ideas and recommendations, treat employees impartially, and attempt to maximize the benefits to their employees.

  • A consideration of the dimensions of servant leadership in intercultural
contexts: a focal case study of a UK executive in Japan

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract A range of emergent studies have explored the idea of a renewed human-centered society, termed “Society 5.0,” and the role therein, of servant leadership. In this regard, in East Asian cultural contexts, existing scholarship does not yet provide sufficient theoretical and practical guidance for intercultural contexts, such as when a predominantly individualistic UK business culture interacts with generally collectivist Japanese culture. This is an important gap because if Society 5.0 is to be realized then a more in-depth intercultural contextual appreciation and understanding are required. The study examines the UK/Japan setting and adopts a social constructivist epistemology and case study approach to illustrate dimensions of servant leadership (DSLs) manifesting in the lived experience of a UK business leader in Japan. Connections to business leader training are drawn and the importance of intercultural dyad specificity is highlighted. The study is also important because recent widespread exposure of various global corporate scandals creates a view that many business leaders care only for themselves or organizational profits, especially in individualistic-orientated societies. This original case study research herein commences the process of developing detailed and focal studies on underpinning drivers and raises hope that ethical behavior, as comprised in the DSLs, can potentially manifest in an individualistic UK/collectivist Japan intercultural dyad context.

  • Do green initiatives and green performance affect firm performance'
           Empirical evidence from India

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The study aims to unravel the impact of green performance and green initiatives on corporate financial performance, and also to explore and establish the relationship between specific components of green performance and financial performance. This study considers a panel dataset comprising 224 nonfinancial companies listed on NSE 500 index for the period of eight consecutive years, i.e., from 2014–2015 to 2021–2022. This study adopts both the static and dynamic panel estimations to explore the link between these variables. The estimation shows green initiatives have a positive impact on financial performance. In addition, this estimation also documents a positive impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) productivity and energy productivity (specific measure of green performance) on corporate performance. This finding provides several important suggestions for Indian companies and policymakers towards adopting more green initiatives along with improving green performance to enhance higher financial performance. This study may also help to implement green policies, which will help to minimize pollutions, and is ultimately beneficial for the whole of society as well as the environment. The novelty of the study is to provide deep understanding and bridge the knowledge gap about the relationship by considering key functional dimensions of Indian firms. In addition, specially by incorporating dynamic panel estimation, this study has controlled for potential endogeneity bias and also the dynamic effects, which are scarce in earlier literature.

  • Courtesy or integrity: what constitutes a stakeholder-caring image'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract It is not uncommon for business institutions to position themselves as stakeholder-caring companies or organizations. However, there is little research on conceptualizing stakeholder-caring as a component of brand image. Through a theoretical lens of brand-consumer interactions, this paper introduces a new construct—stakeholder-caring image—and proposes a model that examines stakeholder-caring’s antecedents (integrity and courtesy) and its consequence (customer satisfaction). The two antecedents—integrity and courtesy—capture intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of brand-consumer interaction practice, respectively, while the consequence (customer satisfaction) is one important behavioral outcome in marketing. The proposed model was tested with Hong Kong customers (n = 296) via a systematic survey. The data were analyzed using LISREL. Several measurement and structural models were constructed to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings reveal that the effect of integrity on customer satisfaction is mediated by a stakeholder-caring image. However, contrary to the conventional wisdom, we surprisingly find that courtesy is not effective to build a stakeholder-caring image. Managerially, this research offers guidance on how to develop stakeholder-caring image and subsequently increase customer satisfaction. In addition, we discuss the nuanced distinction between a stakeholder-caring image and related brand constructs, such as “sincerity” in Aaker’s (1997) brand personality framework.

  • Does a green economy mentality exist' An experimental study in
           emerging country

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Investor behavior is worth investigating as industries and institutions are concerned about spelling out environmental and social sustainability issues. The stream of research in environmental and social sustainabilities is from the points of view of institutions and policy. Nonetheless, environmental and social sustainability issues are based on individual levels, especially investors and their value. This study investigates whether moral attentiveness plays a role in financing orientation and investment propensity relationships. This research used an experimental method with a between-subject 2 × 2 factorial design. The financing orientation variable was manipulated into two, i.e., green financing orientation with a marginal interest rate and red financing orientation with a high interest rate. The moral attentiveness variable was classified into two, i.e., high and low levels. The results showed that investors in the emerging country showed a propensity to invest more in a red financing orientation condition with a high interest rate compared to that in a green financing orientation with a marginal interest rate. It was on pace with the interdisciplinary perspective of the hierarchy of needs that in emerging countries, one of the forceful elements underlying investment decisions was the monetary element to cater to primary (physiological) conditions. Meanwhile, from a utilitarian perspective, green financing with a marginal interest rate was more ethical than red financing with a high interest rate. It was because green financing gave more benefits to the environment and society. Moral attentiveness could filter the adverse impacts of financing orientation on investment propensity. This research will help policymakers and stakeholders drive investors’ awareness about the industry’s benefits to sustainability and promote the green revolution to a competitive market structure.

  • An Intergenerational Justice Approach to Technological Unemployment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Technological unemployment is a very real phenomenon that should be addressed by governments and businesses alike. This paper argues that current approaches to technological unemployment are short-sighted in that they focus predominantly and primarily on current generations. This kind of approach results in harm such as ignoring impending meaning-crises and propagating a potential form of human-quota-driven tokenism in the process of implementing automation in the workplace. Arguably, current generations can (and should) benefit from communal resources insofar as they do not harm the least privileged of future generations. That is the threshold that is set in this paper and this threshold can serve as a guiding principle for leaders when making decisions about whether automation should be implemented, the degree and scope to which automation should be implemented, and the policies regarding the process of the implementation and the regulation of automation in the workplace. An intergenerational justice approach is a novel approach to the problem of technological unemployment and can inform decision-making and policy-setting alike.
