  • Evaluation of the quality of studies in meta-analysis of intervention
           effectiveness in Spanish psychology journals

Specifically, we analyzed whether the coding and evaluation of the quality of the primary studies in meta-analysis based on the efficacy of interventions is a common practice. The purpose of this evaluation is also to report the relationship between quality and the reported results (effect sizes). It is found that 79% of the meta-analyses analyzed included a quality assessment. The relationship between the lowest quality of studies included in meta-analyses and larger effect sizes is also discussed. Finally, we stress the need to improve the reporting of meta-analyses including high-quality evidence.

  • Importance of the therapeutic relationship: efficacy of functional
           analytic psychotherapy with different problems

    • Abstract: ABSTRACT Functional Analytical Psychotherapy (FAP) is a third generation and contextual therapy. It is based on therapeutic interaction, verbal and emotional client-therapist relationships. It also uses functional analysis of behaviour, and live on-going modification of clinical problem behaviours. The aim of this research was to study the efficacy of FAP with different types of psychological problems (anxiety, depression, obsession, sexual, personality, emotional control). An intra-group design (10 participants, 36 years old average) was used with pre-post and follow-up measurements. Different questionnaires have been used as common assessment tools for all clinical cases. The results showed a statistically significant change in all the standardised questionnaires, with a considerable size effect (d from -2.01 to -3.80) and maintained one year later. Also, as clinical change, the participants had improved in their daily lives.

  • ACT-based stress management training aimed at improving workers' mental
health in an Intensive Care Unit: a mixed methods study

    • Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aimed to explore whether an acceptance and commitment (ACT) approach to stress management training improved the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among a group of twenty-two health professionals from an intensive care unit. Questionnaires were administered before and after training, and follow-up was carried out one month after training, including semi-structured interviews with nine participants. The results reflected that the quasi-experimental group reduced their depression and stress levels significantly and showed improvements in stress in the follow-up. A qualitative thematic analysis of interviews showed that nurses were seeking a tool that would help them to cope more effectively with stressful situations and increase their knowledge of stress management. The themes in the professionals' comments claimed specific improvements in their health, well-being, relationships, and psychological processes.

  • Clinical protocol for addressing mental health needs of healthcare
           professionals during COVID-19

Una intervención psicológica breve, basada en técnicas de gestión de ansiedad, regulación emocional y orientación en valores reduce los síntomas emocionales en profesionales.ABSTRACT Healthcare professionals are in the front line of care for patients with COVID-19, presenting greater risk of contagion and emotional distress. The aim of the study is to describe the results of a psychological intervention protocol for professionals; 47 workers from Vall d'Hebron University Hospital who requested psychological support were included during the first month and a half of the crisis. Before and after the intervention a checklist of clinical symptoms, the Clinical Anxiety Scale and the Clinical Global Impression Scale were administered. Professionals who consulted were mostly women, nursing staff, and assistant nursing care technicians, presenting hyperconcern, sadness, sleep, and eating disturbances. Significant improvements were observed on clinical symptoms (z = 4.6, p ≤ .0001), acute stress (z = 2.5, p = .012), anxiety (z = 5.3, p ≤ .0001), and clinical impression (z = 4.1, p ≤ .0001). A brief psychological intervention, based on anxiety management, emotional regulation, and values oriented-behavior, was shown to be effective in reducing emotional symptoms in professionals.

  • Transtheoretical Model and exercise in breast cancer survivors

A systematic review on the use of the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) as a predictor variable of adherence to Physical Exercise (PE) in breast cancer survivors is presented. The systematic literature review was carried out following the PRISMA method in Scopus, Pubmed, and Psycinfo databases. Both in English and Spanish. Thirteen articles published from June 2005 to June 2020 were included. All of them used TTM constructs in their programs. The results show that the TCM variables that demonstrated its association with PE were stages of change and self-efficacy. Therefore, TCM-based interventions help to understand the adoption of exercise behavior. However, these findings are limited by the small sample size, selection biases, and lack of long-term measurements of follow-ups.

  • Quality of life and mental health in adopted adults

This paper analyses psychological adjustment and checks a suggested theoretical model that relates the presence of psychopathological symptoms to a worse health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adult adoptees. The sample consisted of 177 young adopted adults (mean age 27.67). Measures of psychopathological symptoms (SCL-90), quality of life (SF-12), self-esteem (RSES), and resilience (BRS) were taken. The multiple mediation model shows that, in addition to the direct association between psychopathological symptomatology and a poorer HRQOL, resilience, and self-esteem have a buffering effect on this relationship. As a conclusion, empirical evidence of the impact of mental health difficulties on the HRQOL of adopted people is shown. The presence of positive psychological resources, such as resilience and self-esteem, causes psychopathological dimensions, such as anxiety, depression, phobias, or psychoticism to decrease. This paper supports the inclusion of resilience-building programs as a health promotion strategy, especially in the case of psychopathology, and among post-adoption services.
