  • Diversity and Canadian psychology: An evolving relationship.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: One of the ongoing challenges in Canadian society is its diversity. This article discusses some of the historical forces in Canada that have shaped discussions about diversity, with a focus on issues related to immigration, the experience of Indigenous communities in Canada, and other forms of human variability. The article presents some of the ways in which Canadian psychology has failed to maintain optimal diversity considerations and/or to uphold the ethical principle of respect for the dignity of persons, but it focuses on more positive aspects of this evolving relationship. For example, it is noted that psychology has contributed in several ways to our understanding of bias, discrimination, “othering” and related issues such as abuse of power. The article concludes with a series of recommendations for enhanced respect for diversity, recognition of the ubiquitous nature of intersectionality, the encouragement of social and restorative justice perspectives, and equitable participation of all persons in society. • Reimagining clinical psychology.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this invited companion article to the Canadian Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology, I detail my thoughts, experiences, and recommendations for creating a more socially responsive clinical psychology profession. This article builds on my professional and personal learnings and experiences in the field of clinical psychology to reimagine who we are training and how we are training them, and how changes in both regards could solidify our field as a socially responsive health science profession. I define a socially responsive clinical psychology profession as consisting of an inclusive science and a diverse and just community. To achieve these aims, as a profession we must address the composition of faculty and students in our programmes, update student recruitment and retention processes, broaden our conception of science and knowledge systems, and train students for a variety of careers. • Barriers and facilitators of healthcare provider uptake of clinical
practice guideline recommendations for the management of common mental
health concerns: A qualitative evidence synthesis.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Clinical practice guidelines synthesize the best available evidence and recommend treatments with the intention of enhancing client outcomes. Despite evidence for effectiveness, guideline-recommended treatments are often under-utilized. We conducted a systematic review of six bibliographic databases published prior to May 6, 2020. Qualitative studies that reported on mental healthcare provider perceived barriers and facilitators to the delivery of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) recommended by practice guidelines for the management of depression, anxiety-related disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within usual care were eligible. A meta-synthesis approach was used to synthesize barriers and facilitators that were coded in accordance with the Theoretical Domains Framework. Confidence in evidence was graded with the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation-Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research (GRADE-CERQual) approach. Eighteen studies that reported on 705 mental healthcare providers (primarily psychologists and social workers) met inclusion criteria. Evidence synthesized pertained primarily to the delivery of (a) cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE) for the management of PTSD among veterans; and (b) cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the management of depression and anxiety-related disorders. Factors that reliably influenced the delivery of EBTs included the following: (a) knowledge and self-efficacy; (b) anticipation of client outcomes in the presence of complex comorbidity; (c) client preference and readiness to engage in treatment; (d) available time, presence of trained staff, and institutional policies; and (e) availability of professional supports. Findings could influence the delivery of EBTs but must be taken in context with the tripartite model of evidence-based practice. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Fostering resilience in children who have been maltreated: A review and
           call for translational research.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: One-third of Canadian children experience some form of maltreatment in childhood, which is associated with poor mental, emotional, and behavioral outcomes in adulthood. Yet, exposure to child maltreatment is far from deterministic, with many children adapting in the face of adversity. Over the last 30 years, the study of resilience has centered on understanding how to reduce poor developmental outcomes and promote positive adaptation following exposure to risk and adversities, such as child maltreatment. The present paper provides a review of resilience theory as it pertains to child maltreatment. We review the literature to date examining resilience mechanisms following child maltreatment across the social ecology, including the individual, family, and community levels. We identify prevention and intervention strategies across the social ecology that are effective in promoting resilience for children who have been maltreated. Finally, we identify research gaps and discuss translational research directions for increasing positive outcomes for children who have experienced maltreatment. • Toward a dimensional model of family-based resilience: Sensitivity,
stimulation, and stability as moderators of early-life adversity.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: It is widely known that the familial environment plays a prominent role in shaping developmental trajectories. The protective nature of the family environment might be particularly important for children exposed to early-life adversity (ELA), who are at an increased risk for a number of poor developmental outcomes. Indeed, despite experiencing significant ELA that threatens development, some children and youth demonstrate resilience (i.e., positive adaptation) across the life span. In this paper, we introduce a novel dimensional model of partially distinct family-level resilience factors—namely sensitivity, stimulation, and stability—that operate to offset the sequelae of ELA, and review the current state of evidence in support of these factors as buffers against ELA. Overall, while the literature largely supports the protective effects of these family-level resilience factors, future research is required to determine the extent and specificity of buffering against particular dimensions of ELA. Studies should also utilize measures that independently assess sensitivity, stimulation, and stability while simultaneously acknowledging their interdependencies. Implications for policy and practice are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • The psychology of pandemics: Lessons learned for the future.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Pandemics are not simply events in which some harmful microbe “goes viral,” rapidly spreading across the globe. Psychology plays a central role in pandemics, influencing the spreading and containment of diseases, and shaping pandemic-related distress and socially disruptive, divisive, and potentially harmful phenomena such as panic buying, racism, and protests against pandemic mitigation restrictions. Insights from contemporary research, combined with analyses of historical records, offers numerous lessons for planning and managing future pandemics: (1) pandemics are not “once in a lifetime” events; plan for more to come, (2) forgetting past pandemics is not an option, (3) the labels given to pandemics matter a lot, (4) the infodemic regarding health information is here to stay and we need to learn to deal with it, (5) uncertainty is an abstract stressor pervading all aspects of pandemics, from beginning to end, (6) pandemics are dynamic events; don’t assume static patterns of emotions, attitudes, or behaviors, (7) pandemics can elicit extreme psychological reactions, (8) lockdown harms mental health; alternatives need to be developed and evaluated, (9) resilience is the norm, (10) but a substantial minority of pandemic survivors will need mental health services, (11) health care worker burnout is a serious but tractable problem, (12) mental health services must move beyond the consulting room, (13) we need to be proactive in anticipating and addressing pandemics, and (14) there needs to be a greater involvement of psychology in preparing for and managing pandemics. The present article describes and expands on these lessons for managing future pandemics. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

  • How algorithmic management influences worker motivation: A
           self-determination theory perspective.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Algorithmic management (AM) is rapidly spreading across industries and significantly changing the nature of work, thanks to advances in artificial intelligence. Since 2015, the advent of the first publications on this topic, AM has captured and sustained the focus of researchers in the social sciences. This enthusiasm can be explained not only by the rapid expansion of the phenomenon but also by the important issues it raises regarding the influence of management on worker motivation, performance, and well-being. We review the existing literature to identify the known effects of the use of AM on worker motivation, using the lens of self-determination theory (SDT). We uncovered mostly negative effects of AM on worker need satisfaction and motivation; however, features of algorithmic management systems and management utilization practices have moderating effects on the impact of AM on work motivation. Future research should leverage motivational knowledge derived from self-determination theory to inform the design of algorithmic management and how organizations use it. • Canadian models of professional training: Past and future.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Models of training for professional psychologists in Canada have developed in uneven stages over the last 75 years. Our first national conference on models of training occurred more than a decade after the seminal U.S. meeting in Boulder, Colorado. In the 20th century, our only national conference with a primary focus on training was at Lake Couchiching, Ontario, in 1965. There have been national conferences where some of the proceedings focused on training, but most of the developments in our training models have resulted from developments in our accreditation standards and recommendations from the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) Task Forces. It was not until the 2019 National Summit on the Future of Professional Psychology Training that the profession held another national conference with a specific focus on the future of professional psychology training in Canada. However, as with other national conferences, the challenge for our profession will be in the implementation of these recommendations. There are substantive barriers to their implementation, particularly for our training programs. Strategies suggested by Paul Meehl in 1964 for challenging the academic status quo to move forward with significant changes in training are reviewed with reference to the implementation of the National Summit recommendations. If psychology in Canada is to develop its models for professional training for the 21st century, then these types of challenges are necessary to force needed changes to occur.
