  • Training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): National training
           guidelines from the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural
           Therapies.

      Abstract: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been extensively studied and is an effective treatment for a wide variety of mental health problems. Yet, despite its evidence base and the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines, its dissemination continues to be limited and the quality of its delivery is uneven. One of the main reasons for these concerns is the quality and intensity of training. In the Canadian context, where regulated professionals from a range of disciplines and backgrounds provide mental health services, it is essential to define sufficient training, to in turn increase positive treatment outcomes. The Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies/L’Association Canadienne des therapies cognitives et comportementales (CACBT/ACTCC) has developed guidelines for training content (both knowledge and competencies), as well as training strategies and evaluation methods. This article outlines the rationale for these guidelines and details their content. The guidelines are put forward with the goal of ensuring that clinicians receive the requisite training and supervision to deliver high quality CBT.   • Canadian psychological practice: Development of low intensity/high volume
           initiatives in public healthcare.

      Abstract: Low intensity-high volume (LI-HV) interventions are increasingly being recognized as a means to communicate psychological principles and provide services to those with unmet mental health care needs. This article describes several different applications of LI-HV interventions in a central Canadian province, where underfunding of psychologists is well documented. The settings reviewed included tertiary hospital anxiety, depression, and sleep clinics, primary care, and a provincial mental health crisis setting. Descriptions of the LI-HV innovations and the impact of these innovations on referrals, providers, patients, and the healthcare system are reviewed. Some of the conclusions from these findings are that it is feasible to develop LI-HV interventions for psychological care, especially with limited psychologist resources. Patients find such interventions to be acceptable and satisfactory. Improvement in symptoms is often noted with LI-HV interventions, although the magnitude of improvement may be less than what is obtained with higher intensity services. Further, the provision of LI-HV services often results in changes to the higher intensity service. Anecdotally, psychologist providers report that the interventions are worth the investment.   • Mental wellness needs of two Indigenous communities: Bases for culturally
           competent clinical services.

      Abstract: To address known gaps in mental health care and services for Indigenous peoples, we explored the mental wellness needs of members of 2 Prince Edward Island Mi’kmaq communities. A community-based, participatory research method within an Indigenous relational paradigm drove the research approach. We used the Photovoice process, which provides cameras to participants and empowers them to document the community’s needs and resources from their own experience. Elicited photographs and captions were the catalyst for discussions during 8 meetings attended by 11 Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nation band members. Themes on mental wellness needs were derived using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) 6 phases of thematic analysis and were grouped at the systems level, community level, and individual level. Emergent themes were analyzed with participants during 3 additional meetings. Mental wellness was conceptualised by each Mi’kmaq community as holistic and requiring attention at a cultural and systems level that includes past and present acts of colonization. Both the creation of stronger community ties based on traditions, pride, and connection and the establishment of intergenerational care across the life span were considered important by band members. Although diagnosis and treatment were also deemed important, mental wellness was perceived as being broader than a specific mental health phenomenon. Therefore, we encourage clinicians to blend multiple cultural worldviews and healing approaches, such as “two-eyed seeing,” that embrace the value of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing when providing mental health care. In summary, effective clinical services for Indigenous communities should focus on mental wellness promotion through the strengthening of community connectedness, culture, and Indigenous identity.   • Criminalization of HIV: Ethical and legal issues for the practice of
           psychology in Canada.

      Abstract: In 1998, nondisclosure of HIV-status was criminalized in Canada. This in turn has created potential mandatory reporting for psychologists working with persons living with HIV (PLWH) in cases invoking a duty to warn. A brief review of the literature indicates that, at least for some PLWH, this may create a catch-22: While PLWH are aware of the benefits of specific health behaviours (e.g., regular testing, mental health support), feared legal consequences may impede their willingness to access care or disclose their health status. In this space there exists a great opportunity for psychologists to help clients successfully navigate fears, overcome impediments to disclosure, and skillfully manage a legal duty to report. To support psychologists in managing competing ethical and legal duties, this paper presents a comprehensive review of Canadian case law over the past two decades regarding the criminalization of HIV nondisclosure, an overview of the consequences for psychologists of (non-) reporting, and the legal standard for the duty to warn. Additionally, the principles in the Canadian Psychological Association’s Code of Ethics (4th ed.) have been reviewed to inform clinical service in this ethical-legal grey area. Case examples, prompts, and “rules of thumb” are also provided to facilitate group discussion, supervision, and clinical practice in ethical decision-making.   • Adhésion aux mythes du viol et perpétration de coercition sexuelle chez
           les étudiants et étudiantes universitaires : Une revue systématique de
           la littérature.

      Abstract: Sexual coercion perpetrated by university students is a serious problem. Rape myth acceptance (RMA) is recognized as a risk factor for sexual coercion perpetration. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the relationship between RMA and sexual coercion perpetration by male and female university students. A systematic review of the literature was carried out using electronic platforms, Google Scholar and backward snowballing. Of the 2755 references examined, 35 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results support the existence of a relationship between RMA and sexual coercion perpetration and indicate that (1) RMA is positively and significantly correlated to sexual coercion in both male and female students; (2) RMA is significantly stronger among male students who have used sexual coercion than those who have not, and; (3) RMA is a significant predictor of sexual coercion perpetration by male and female students, in univariate models. However, multivariate analysis results do not necessarily show a direct relationship between the two concepts in either male or female students. Overall, the results highlight the importance of considering RMA as a risk factor for sexual coercion perpetration by university students and the need to target those attitudes in prevention programs.   • Proposal for the extension of rights to medical assistance in dying (MAiD)
           to mature minors in Canada.

      Abstract: Individuals suffering intolerably from a medical condition are legally able to request medical assistance in dying (MAiD) under certain circumstances. MAiD can either entail a physician or nurse practitioner prescribing fatal drugs for the patient to self-administer (physician-assisted suicide) or a physician directly administering lethal drugs (euthanasia). Whereas laws regulating MAiD have been in effect in different areas of the world since 1942, Canada only recently decriminalized MAiD in 2016. Individuals under the age of 18 years are not permitted to receive MAiD in Canada. Because legislation exists in other countries that permit MAiD, the current review aims to (a) review legislation and data pertaining to MAiD in Canada and other countries with particular attention on legislation for minors; (b) address important ethical considerations for extending MAiD services to minors in Canada; and (c) provide recommendations for amendments to current MAiD legislation in Canada based on the findings. Combining data from other countries with ethical implications for offering all options to relieve suffering, it is recommended that Canada extend MAiD legislation to mature minors with the inclusion of psychologists in the assessment of decision-making capacity and informed consent.   • Can biomedical and cognitive enhancement increase psychological
           resilience'

      Abstract: How have advances in the use of biomedical and cognitive enhancement affected our understanding of human resilience' At what point does enhancement facilitate recovery and growth after exposure to adversity, and when is enhancement a manipulation of human potential, causing a redefinition of resilience as something more than a return to normal functioning' In this article we juxtapose theories of enhancement and resilience, exploring how biomedical and cognitive enhancement technologies are influencing our understanding of the limits of human wellbeing in contexts of exposure to atypical stress or challenge. Specifically, we discuss 3 different ways biomedical enhancement can influence psychological and physical resilience: (a) enhancement that builds latent capacity and resources to deal effectively with atypical stressors before exposure to risk, (b) enhancement as intervention which adds to an individual’s existing psychological and social resources after exposure to risk, and (c) transhumanism as a means to make individuals even more resilient than they would be without intervention. These 3 areas of focus distinguish enhancement typologies by their temporality and ontological suppositions of what it means to be fully functioning before, during and after exposure to adversity. The article concludes with a discussion of the potential within the biomedical and cognitive enhancement fields to bolster resilience through interventions that exert a positive influence on human biology.       Abstract: This article presents the results of an online survey conducted following the coming into force of the Act to amend the Professional Code and other legislative provisions in the field of mental health and human relations. This survey was conducted on a sample of 243 psychologists, 392 guidance counselors (G.C.) and 90 psychoeducators (Ps. ed.) from Quebec. Results first show that the amendments to the Professional Code appear to have had a lesser impact on the assessment practices of targeted professionals than was anticipated. Considering the attribution of new reserved assessment activities to G.C. and Ps. ed., they, however, perceive more changes in their assessment practices than psychologists. Furthermore, a relatively low degree of appropriation is observed for several reserved activities in terms of frequency of exercise and perceived competence. Lastly, the average frequency of exercise varies according to the professional affiliation and the served clientele. Thus, psychologists appropriate their reserved activities to a greater extent than G.C. and Ps. ed. This is also the case for professionals whose vulnerable clientele (e.g., individuals with developmental disabilities) are targeted by the amendments to the Professional Code. Plausible explanations for the modest impact of the amendments to the Professional Code and the relatively low degree of appropriation of the reserved assessment activities are proposed.            des parents qui vivent une séparation conflictuelle: Une méta-analyse.

      Abstract: Separation and divorce are common family realities. In 2016, almost 2 out of 10 children in Canada were living in single parent families and 1 child out of 10 was living in a blended family, mainly because of the separation of their parents. In light of this phenomenon affecting a large number of families, interventions have been introduced to help separating parents to develop better parenting and co-parenting skills. The main objective of this meta-analysis is to determine the effectiveness of group intervention programs for separating or divorcing parents in post-breakup conflict. The two key targets of the programs, improving co-parenting and parenting, will be examined. A second objective is to measure the moderating effects of different variables associated with the intervention and the participants, such as the type of intervention measures, sample characteristics, as well as the various methodologies employed in the included studies. In-depth research of the literature led to inclusion of 25 studies. The results suggest that group intervention for separating parents is effective in improving parenting skills, as well as identifying indicators of cooperation and co-parenting conflict (d = −.26; 95 %CI : [.15–.37]; Q = 135.96, p = .00; k = 25). The intervention format and the time elapsed since separation are significant moderators of this association. These results provide a relevant clarification of the type of program that is effective and about the clients who can particularly benefit.       Abstract: The current systematic literature review focuses on the effects of word problem-solving interventions for adolescents with learning mathematics disabilities or difficulties. A research has been realised in October 2017 on 6 databases and updated in October 2018 on 1 database. Sixteen published experimental studies and 2 master’s theses in speech-language pathology were identified in the field of health, psychology, pedagogy, and speech-language pathology. Several types of approach were identified: cognitive strategy instruction, mathematical representation of problems (schema-based instruction, manipulatives), indirect interventions (contextualization; targeted interventions on basic skills), and instructional accommodations. In general, all interventions showed heterogeneous results according to mathematic abilities that were assessed and to students’ ability levels. To date, no approach can be qualified as evidence-based practice. Two approaches are encouraging: the cognitive strategy instruction and the schema-based instruction priming the problem structure.
