  • Reducing racial bias and lethal force among Canadian police officers:
           Concrete recommendations for change.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Population data reveal that Black individuals are more often arrested, charged, shot, and killed by police in Canada than White individuals. Given the traumatic effects of police lethal force, there are urgent calls to understand the potential causes of observed racial disparities and develop interventions to effectively reduce lethal force errors overall, especially among disproportionately affected communities. Expanding on prior lab-based studies, Andersen et al. (see record 2021-76221-001) observed anti-Black bias in a sample (n = 187) of Canadian police officers during their annual requalification assessments. The absolute frequency of lethal force errors was greater in simulations featuring a Black suspect and scores on the Implicit Association Test (IAT) indicated anti-Black bias. However, racially biased behaviour was not predicted by IAT scores, highlighting the need to revisit how police performance and implicit attitudes are measured. Andersen et al. also debunk the concerning and erroneous claim in U.S.-based research literature of an anti-White bias in police lethal force. The current article is a response to a commentary by Williams et al. (see record 2023-19806-001) who mischaracterize the principal findings in Andersen et al. and use factually inaccurate information in an attempt to discredit the study and research team. We call for improved professionalism and accuracy both in composing commentary articles and in the peer review process that approves them for publication. Drawn directly from empirical data and supported by current literature (Hagiwara et al., 2020), we conclude with actionable, evidence-based recommendations to reduce lethal force errors, racial disparities, and racial biases. • Validation d’une version canadienne-française de l’Échelle de Stress
           parental auprès de Parents québécois.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to validate the French-Canadian version of the Parental Stress Scale with a first sample of 473 parents and to confirm its factorial structure with a second sample of 378 parents from the Quebec community with an infant. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire translated from English to French using the back translation method, as well as other measures generally associated with parental stress. Results show good internal consistency and a two-factor structure characterized by parental stressors and benefits. Convergent validity analyses show associations between parental stress and psychological distress, postpartum depression, and parental self-efficacy. The French-Canadian version of the PSS has good psychometric qualities and favors a more widespread use in the French-speaking community to measure parental stress. • Performative shooting exercises do not predict real-world racial bias in
           police officers.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Andersen et al. (see record 2021-76221-001) published an article in this journal entitled “Racial Bias and Lethal Force Errors Among Canadian Police Officers,” exploring the possible relationship between lethal force errors on a simulated police recertification shooting test, stress physiology, and suspect race (Black vs. White). Finding no association between Black–White Implicit Association Test (BW-IAT) scores and shooting errors in the test, they erroneously concluded that the BW-IAT lacks validity as a screening tool to assess racially biased use of force and thereby is not useful. This article reviews the methodological problems, biased assumptions, and errors in logic made by the authors, and discusses an informed approach to understanding racial bias and police violence. It also makes a call-to-action for antiracism approaches in academic publishing. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

  • The scope, nature, and impact of sexual violence among students from a
Canadian university: A random sample study.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Random sample research is important for documenting the ubiquity and context of sexual violence (SV) on university campuses but has been scant in the Canadian context. We contribute one of the only Canadian university random sample studies since the 1990s. We examined the scope, nature, and impact of SV in a large (N = 977) and diverse random sample of students from one Canadian university. We found that 23.2% of women, 9.6% of men, and 16.7% of nonbinary students reported experiencing SV at least once in the past 12 months. Roughly 6% of both women and men reported perpetrating SV at least once in the past 12 months, and no nonbinary participants reported any perpetration. The findings did not support a fall “red zone” of increased risk of rape and attempted rape for first- and second-year students. Women’s victimization did not vary by race, international student status, sexual identity, or disability, but second-year women were at increased risk. Overall, most victims of rape and attempted rape were victimized by a man who was not a student on their campus but was known to them (most often a friend, date, or intimate partner). Rapes and attempted rapes were commonly in someone’s home. Women reported significantly greater trauma and academic impact of victimization compared to men. Our results are important for informing future research, prevention, policy, and service provision on Canadian university campuses. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Is parental mediation negatively associated with problematic media use
among children and adolescents' A systematic review and meta-analysis.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Parents in contemporary society face the challenge of establishing guidelines for how to manage their children’s and adolescent’s media use. Parental mediation, or the parenting strategies for regulating children’s media use, is frequently mentioned in discussions of problematic media use. However, previous research has provided inconsistent findings on the relationship between parental mediation and problematic media use. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the correlation between parental mediation (restrictive-, active-, and co-using mediation) and problematic media use (internet gaming disorder, social media disorder, and general problematic media use) among children and adolescents. Systematic literature searches were conducted in three online databases: Web of Science; Scopus; and EBSCO (CINAHL). PRISMA guidelines on eligibility criteria were observed. This review included a total of 41 studies which involved 47,264 children/adolescents (between 5 and 22 years of age) and 77,494 parents/carers. The initial results revealed that active mediation and co-using mediation are significantly correlated with problematic media use, while a nonsignificant relationship was found between restrictive mediation and problematic media use. Additional subgroup analyses revealed more complex relationships between parental mediation and problematic media use. This study highlighted certain methodological considerations that should be included in future studies to provide reliable evidence for the link between parental mediation and problematic media use. • COVID-19 pandemic mental health trajectories: Patterns from a sample of
Canadians primarily recruited from Alberta and Ontario.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a highly contagious and novel virus that has prompted government officials to implement restrictive public health orders. It is hypothesized that pandemic-related restrictions may have a detrimental impact on mental health. Longitudinal data were collected through 13 assessments, repeated every 2 weeks for the initial 6 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were recruited through [Masked] University and social media. The final sample consisted of 280 adults from across Canada, with the majority of participants residing in Alberta (63%) and Ontario (20%). Sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 related risk factors, prepandemic and pandemic physical activity, and COVID-19 related risk factors were collected at study entry, and mental health (depressive symptoms, anxiety, and loneliness) were collected at each assessment. Multilevel modeling was used to identify mental health trajectories during the initial 6 months of the pandemic. Mental health symptoms tracked with rising cases of infection and subsequent public health restrictions during the pandemic. Specifically, anxiety and depressive symptoms demonstrated strong longitudinal quadratic trends. Both anxiety and depressive symptoms were high at study entry (May 2020) and decreased over the summer, followed by an increase in the fall and winter months. Loneliness was stable over the follow-up period. Age, sex, living alone, socioeconomic factors, and preexisting mental health conditions correlated with mental health symptoms during the pandemic’s initial 6 months. This study characterizes within-person changes to mental health (anxiety, depressive symptoms, and loneliness) in a Canadian sample from May 2020 to January 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. • Validation canadienne-française de l’inventaire des dispositions des
           destinataires à l’endroit d’un changement organisationnel (IDDCO).

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Organizational Change Recipients’ Beliefs Scale developed by Armenakis et al. (2007) is used to assess recipients’ dispositions toward organizational change. However, this instrument is not available in French, which limits its use in research in Francophone workplaces. This study presents a French version, the Inventaire des dispositions des destinataires à l’égard d’un changement organisationnel (IDDCO), and its psychometric qualities. First translated into French, this version was administered in four different change contexts (i.e., new technology, process modernization, culture change, merger). It presents satisfactory indices in terms of its factor structure, the internal consistency of its factors, and the relationships between them. The results also show the existence of theoretically consistent correlational patterns between the French version of the instrument and three related constructs. In sum, the results of the study show that the French and English versions of the instrument converge. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Racial bias and lethal force errors among Canadian police officers.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Scientific examination of racial disparities in police shootings shows conflicting evidence of anti-Black, anti-White, or no racial bias. Experimental studies that attempt to control for extraneous factors often lack ecological validity and have inconsistent approaches for measuring racial bias. Given the mounting outcry for police reform, including recommendations for racial bias screening and training, clarifying the relationship between observable lethal force behaviors and implicit racial bias is an urgent matter. Building on limited extant literature, the present study examined racial disparities in shoot/no-shoot decision-making among Canadian police officers (n = 187) during their service’s annual recertification assessment that manipulated suspect race (Black or White) in otherwise identical scenarios. Lethal force errors were compared to implicit racial bias scores on the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and other demographic variables including officer sex, age, years of experience, and race. We found no statistically significant difference in error rates for simulations featuring a Black or White suspect for shoot (2.5%, 3.1%, respectively) or no-shoot scenarios (4.6%, 3.0%, respectively). Lethal force errors were not predicted by suspect race, extent of autonomic arousal, or IAT scores. However, the absolute frequencies of lethal force errors were greater in scenarios featuring Black suspects. The current findings suggest that widespread reform to police training is urgently needed to reduce racial disparities in use of force (UOF) and lethal force errors overall.
