  • Efficacy of Gratitude Intervention in India: Distinctive Cross-Cultural
           Conceptions of Gratitude Matter

      Abstract: Abstract Gratitude interventions have been usually less effective for collectivistic cultures compared to individualistic cultures. The first study examined the impact of the target person in the efficacy of gratitude intervention in the Indian context. The second study examined whether conception of gratitude is similar between Indians and Anglo-Americans. In first study, 312 first-year undergraduate Indian students (Mage = 18.64, SD = 0.76) were randomly assigned to three groups. They wrote about a typical day in their life, gratitude toward a particular person of their choice and gratitude toward an immediate family member, respectively. Selected sub-scales of PANAS-X were administered before and after the intervention. In second study, 112 Indian participants (Mage = 27.63, SD = 5.82) and 80 Anglo-American (Mage = 38.48, SD = 11.94) participants took part in a survey whereby they needed to rate the centrality and positivity of some gratitude features. We found expressing gratitude toward an immediate family member was neither effective in increasing positive emotions nor effective in decreasing negative emotions. However, expressing gratitude toward any person of choice was effective in increasing positive emotions as well as decreasing negative emotions. Three prominent themes emerged for gratefulness toward any person, i.e., being an inspiration, providing a perspective in life, and emotional and financial support in success. Providing support to the hypotheses, indebtedness and its associated negative emotions were perceived more positively and more central to the concept of gratitude for Indian participants than Anglo-American participants.

  • Humour as a Moderator Between Hassles and Well-Being

      Abstract: Abstract Humour is a universal phenomenon that offers several physiological and psychological benefits across cultures. The objectives of this study were to examine the relationships between daily hassles, humour and well-being; and to investigate the moderating effect of humour on the relationship between hassles and well-being. A correlational design was adopted to collect data from 644 participants (men = 300, women = 344), aged between 18 and 58 years using purposive and snowballing sampling techniques. The Daily Hassles Scale, Sense of Humour Questionnaire (SHQ-R) and the Personal Well-Being Index—Adult (PWI-A) were administered to the sample. The self-report measures were appropriately scored and the collective data were analyzed. Statistical analyses revealed a positive relationship between sense of humour and well-being. A negative relationship was observed between sense of humour and hassles; and between well-being and hassles. Further, sense of humour was found to be moderating the relationship between daily hassles and well-being. This study highlights the role of humour in softening the impact of hassles on the well-being of the Indian population. This strengthens the construct of humour in the context of positive psychology.

  • Perceived Parental Perfectionism as a Predictor of the Impostor Phenomenon
           Among Filipino Honor Students

      Abstract: Abstract The development of the Impostor Phenomenon (IP) is suggested to stem from one’s family. With IP being consistently linked to the multidimensional trait of perfectionism, the current research looked into how Perceived Parental Perfectionism (PPP), measured through the domains of Parental Expectations (PEs) and Parental Criticism (PC) as deduced from Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS), predicts IP. It was hypothesized that both PEs and PC will positively predict IP. A total sample of 169 (141 females and 28 males) high-achieving Filipino undergraduate students participated in the present study. The results revealed that although PEs and PC have a significant relationship with IP, only PC has been found to be a predictor of IP. This indicates that high-achieving students are likely to doubt their academic success when their parents are overly critical of their achievements. On the other hand, the mere presence of high parental expectations, without accompanying criticism, does not correlate with the impostor phenomenon.

  • Gratitude Vs. Yoga Intervention to Increase Happiness Among Women

      Abstract: Abstract This study compares a gratitude intervention with an Indian yoga intervention to determine its efficacy to raise happiness levels. A randomized control trial was conducted with 48 female participants in each intervention group for eight weeks. The results suggest that happiness levels improved from pre-intervention to mid- and post-intervention and from mid- to post-intervention in the gratitude and yoga intervention groups. Despite similar levels of happiness pre-intervention in both groups, the yoga intervention group outperformed the gratitude intervention group in improving participants’ happiness levels at mid-intervention and post-intervention. The findings reveal the significance of customizing interventions to fit specific cultural contexts.

  • Explaining the Relationship Between Obsessive-Compulsive Personality
           Traits and Comorbid Psychiatric Symptoms Among Convicts, Pakistan

      Abstract: Abstract This study explained comorbid psychiatric symptoms (CPS) through obsessive–compulsive personality traits (OCPT). Through self-reported questionnaires, data were collected from 179 convicts in the Central Jail Sahiwal, Punjab, Pakistan. The findings of the study showed that obsessive–compulsive personality disorder based on Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Short Form showed a good construct validity using four facets specified in DSM-5 (APA, 2013). In addition, the findings showed that the relationship between OCPT and CPS is explained through the mediating role of disruptive self-functioning, predicted by a low level of education. The suppressing effect of education in the presence of age as a moderator was also found to be present in the relationship between OCPT and CPS. The study's findings are significant as they identify factors that could be considered and targeted to treat comorbid psychiatric symptoms.

  • Meaning in Life and Mental Health of Older Adults in Different Living
           Arrangements

      Abstract: Abstract Meaning in life is considered to be an important factor in functioning optimally and for leading a happy life. It is also associated with reduced risk of geriatric depression and despair in later years. The present study aims to understand the relationship between meaning in life and mental health among urban Indian older adults, and to further explore the differences related to gender and living arrangements on meaning in life and mental health of older adults. A total sample of 164 urban older adults (92 males and 72 females) from two different living arrangements, those living alone (Group 1 = 60) and those living with adult married children (Group 2 = 104) were assessed on meaning in life and mental health. The study found that search for meaning in life was higher among urban older adults. Participants had a flourishing mental health, and higher search for meaning was positively correlated with better mental health. Males had higher need to search for newer meaning in their life than urban female older adults. Older adults who were living alone had higher need to search and were looking for something higher in life. However, living arrangement did not have any significant difference on mental health of urban older adults.

  • A Brief Psychometric Report on the Association Between Resource-Based
           Employability and Perceived Employability

      Abstract: Abstract Based on the basic distinction between output-based employability (i.e. perceived employability) and input-based employability (i.e. movement capital), this brief report aimed at testing the association between perceived employability and a newer input-based conceptualization of employability, namely resource-based employability, providing further psychometric support to it. Five hundred and forty-nine Italian employees were sampled and filled both questionnaires. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to analyse responses by estimating a measurement model including both variables and testing for their correlation. The estimated measurement model showed satisfactory goodness of fit indices. In particular, the two variables correlated significantly in the expected direction. This brief report provided further psychometric support to the conceptualization of resource-based employability by showing its positive and significant association with perceived employability. These results further support the idea that resource-based employability may be used in career and vocational interventions.

  • The Mind’s Eye is Not a Metaphor: Visuospatial Working Memory and Mental
           Imageries for Learning and Language Comprehension

      Abstract: Abstract Research on memory and language has been historically studied to understand the role of verbal memory in language. But it is far from clear how visual memory is involved in acquiring knowledge and language. In this review, we focus on the visuospatial sketchpad from the working memory model, which explains the perception and storage of visual representations to process language. It is significant from the light of findings that verbal memory is necessary for language; similarly, visual memory is also crucial in the processing and comprehension of language. To this point, we review the analysis of dual-coding theory, which suggests that verbal and visual memory are equally crucial for language processing. Further, the visual memory turns into visual or mental imagery that acts as an offline perception in the absence of sensory input. For people with aphantasia, this mental imagery is absent or impaired, leading to difficulties in language comprehension. Therefore, studying the importance of visual memory and mental imagery in language processing is necessary. Taken together, the present paper provides a broad-spectrum understanding of the mind’s eye that develops and comprehends the information with mental imageries. The article explains the biological pathway of visual representations in the visual cortex, forming visual memory and mental imageries that eventually help in learning.

  • Exploring Functional and Dysfunctional Aspects of Interpersonal Distrust

      Abstract: Abstract Interpersonal distrust is conceptualised as an expectation of harm or negative outcomes from another person’s conduct including words, decisions, and behaviours. Although distrust tends to be perceived with negative connotations, previous literature suggests that it could be productive or healthy when it serves as protection from harmful situations. To further understand how distrust functions, this study aimed to distinguish two dimensions of distrust—functional and dysfunctional—that are deployed in interpersonal contexts. Functional distrust serves to reduce realistic vulnerability to harm and is flexible, while dysfunctional distrust similarly serves to reduce vulnerability to harm but is more extreme, rigid, and can prevent reasonable risk-taking that could lead to positive outcomes. A sample of undergraduate students (n = 309) completed an online survey on attributes and behaviours associated with the propensity to distrust. A series of correlation analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between the distrust dimensions and the attitudinal and behavioural constructs included in the proposed nomological net, and t-test analyses were conducted to assess gender differences among these relationships. While the two dimensions of distrust are related, they differ in their strength of association with some variables (mistrust, social cynicism, neuroticism, and risk-taking) and differ in kind with others (gullibility and irrational beliefs). These preliminary findings can stimulate research regarding the impact of functional and dysfunctional distrust in interpersonal relationships.

  • Development of Social Stigma Scale in Indian Context

      Abstract: Abstract Stigma is a strong negative perception of other person or other group, about their physical as well as social characteristics. The stigmatized groups are discriminated against, oppressed, and treated inhumanly for their condition. Although such groups exist in most societies, stigmatization differs across cultures. The paper conceptualizes stigma, identifies its various dimensions, and describes the development of the social stigma scale to measure experiences and perception of stigmatized persons. Unstructured interviews with ten people were conducted, at least one from the six stigmatized groups: eunuchs, beggars, disabled, widows, poor, and leprosy patients to identify salient features of stigma. Content analysis of the unstructured interviews led to identify stigma’s dimensions: marginalization, exclusion, ritualistic inclusion, dehumanization, (i.e. humiliation, atrocity, and exploitation), and identity. Each dimension was operationalized facilitating items (statements) writing and final selection of 30-items for the social stigma scale (SSS). The social stigma scale was administered to 328 participants in the six stigmatized groups to standardize the scale and determine reliability and validity. The internal consistency (Cronbach alpha) of each dimension was computed. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was determined to establish the scale’s construct validity. The Cronbach alpha (α) values, CFA, and intercorrelations suggest conceptual convergence of stigma dimensions and confirmation of essential criteria of the social stigma scale in the Indian context.

  • Parental Attachment, Perceived Parental-Partner Similarity, and
           Relationship Satisfaction among Indian Emerging Adults

      Abstract: Abstract Theories of mate selection debate about whether people tend to choose partners based on similarities to their parents. The present study aimed to address whether a similarity in how people perceive their parents and their partners is associated with the relationship between parental attachment and relationship satisfaction by adopting a template-matching framework. Participants were urban, emerging adults in India (n = 263, 137 male and 126 female) who were measured for how they perceive the traits of a parental figure, traits of a partner, attachment to the parent, and relationship satisfaction with the partner. Data analysis was conducted using correlations, linear regressions, and moderation analyses. Findings show that perceived neuroticism of parents was associated with perceived neuroticism of the partner. Additionally, perceptions of neuroticism of parents predicted neuroticism in partners. Perceived agreeableness, neuroticism, and openness to experience moderated the relationship between parental attachment and relationship satisfaction. A gender difference with a small effect size in perceptions of similarity was observed for openness to experience and agreeableness. Finally, perceived agreeableness also moderated the relationship between parental attachment and relationship satisfaction for men and women separately. However, for men, perceived neuroticism also significantly moderated this relationship. The findings imply that, to an extent, the more emerging adults perceive similarities of certain traits in their parents and partners, the higher likelihood that their attachment to their parent predicts relationship satisfaction with their partner. Limitations and future directions have been discussed.

      Abstract: Abstract We provide an overview of instruments related to the three most representative theories of approach-avoidance (Monni et al., in Personality and Individual Differences 166:110163, 2020): The Regulatory focus theory (Higgins, in American Psychologist 52:1280–1300, 1997; Advances in Experimental Social Psychology 30:1–46, 1998), the Reinforcement sensitivity theory (Gray, in Behaviour Research and Therapy 8:249–266, 1970; The psychology of fear and stress, CUP Archive, 1987; as reported by Gray & McNaughton (The neuropsychology of anxiety: An enquiry into the functions of Septo-hippocampal system, Oxford University Press, 2000), and the Approach-Avoidance temperament theory (Elliot & Thrash, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 82:804–812, 2002; Journal of Personality 78:865–906, 2010). We examined published peer-reviewed empirical studies guided by three aims: (1) providing a brief description and comparison of the basic constructs of the three theories; (2) offering an overview of the approach-avoidance assessments that have been used in the literature; (3) discussing the strengths and weaknesses of these methodologies and suggesting which might be the most effective technique according to the constructs’ operationalization and the psychometric-procedural quality to help researchers choose the reference theory and method best suited to their research focus.

  • Efficacy of Positive Parenting Programme in Addressing ADHD Symptomatology
           and Parental Stress in Southern India

      Abstract: Abstract Interventions can have a powerful positive impact in reducing ADHD symptomatology as well as addressing parental stress associated with the behavioural management of children. In this study, the behavioural symptoms of ADHD children, and their association with parental stress, were explored along with assessing the efficacy of the Positive Parenting Programme (PPP) in reducing parental stress and behavioural symptoms, in a south Indian sociocultural context. ADHD children with mild to severe behavioural symptoms were selected from 20 schools in Southern India. As reported by Conner (Manual for the Conners’ rating scales-revised, Multi-Health Systems, 1997), measuring four dimensions, namely oppositional, inattention/cognition, hyperactivity and ADHD index, was used. The level of stress was measured by taking into account positive (emotional benefits and personal development) and negative aspects (restrictions and demands on resources) of parenting, through the Parenting Stress Scale by Berry and Jones (J Soc Pers Relationsh 12:463–472, 1995). Parental stress was reduced more prominently and significantly and there was a significant reduction in pre- and post-mean scores of each dimension of behavioural symptoms through the Positive Parenting Programme (PPP), thus proving the efficacy of the intervention. The study addressed the special needs of parents of ADHD children and focused on positive aspects of parenting. In the South Indian sociocultural context, parents’ vulnerability is questioned and repeatedly put in for a check, increasing their stress level and many times, they resort to social withdrawal. Hence, the need to train parents in PPP while dealing with special needs of ADHD children was felt, to support their adaptive function in school settings and social and executive functioning in society.

      Abstract: Abstract The plan of the paper is to study autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children as complex conditions that affect cognitive, emotional, social, and physical health. Broadly tracing the medical journey of the condition, it addresses the challenges faced by parents as they make sense of, and navigate their way through the appearance of early symptoms, impediments in correct diagnosis, acceptance, and adapt to live with the condition. The paper attempts to understand autism in medical and neurological terms, as well as the challenges faced by children and parents through the case study of Kyari (meaning a flower bed), a lone centre providing accessible autism care in about 150 km around Moradabad (west UP, India), which has been instrumental in raising an awareness of autism and has a reach that is unprecedented in the city in bringing sensitive autism intervention. It further comprehensively studies the symptoms of ASD, and the role of augmentative and alternative communication, behaviour modification, and the work of organisations like the Centre for Autism, CBSE mandate for inclusive education as applied in the case and Indian government policy for autism.

  • Issues and Challenges in Integrating Modern Psychology with Indian Thought

      Abstract: Abstract The views expressed by Sinha (J Humanistic Psychol 5(1):17, 1965) were radical and ahead of time. He had emphasized the immense value of Indian knowledge systems and their potential to enrich academic psychology as a whole. The chief focus was that Western psychology has failed in addressing existential issues about the meaning of life—Who am I—Where have I come from—Where will I go after I leave the body (dehanta). Indian thought, on the other hand, has engaged with these questions for millennia and provided convincing answers. Western psychology has evaded these questions because of the delimitation of methodological concerns of the so-called scientific methodology rooted in logical positivism. Sinha emphasized that Indian concepts and constructs can also be examined/studied empirically to establish their validity. However, the methodology of verification will differ from the Western modes of verification. Indian knowledge systems are based on direct first-hand experience (darshana), and modes of verifiability have been delineated. The inclusion of Indian psychology (IP) in mainstream psychology will go a long way in creating a true psychology which is universal. By way of an afterword, similar concerns were highlighted by Indra Sen in the 1930s. Recently, over the last two decades, a movement has gathered momentum in India by leading psychologists, to bring IP to a global platform.

  • Psychology: The ‘Scientific’ Study of Subjective Experience

      Abstract: Abstract This commentary presents certain limitations inherent in the discipline of Psychology that renders the possibility of inclusion or integration of Indian thoughts regarding human subjective experience at a disadvantage vis-à-vis what is termed as ‘modern’ Psychology in the article authored by Prof. Durganand Sinha. Like many other realities, the limitations mostly originate from inequities with regard to power and social justice. The other sources pertain to excessive reliance on positivism. Skewed representation of cultural constructions of the human subjective experience acts as a barrier in making the discipline vibrant and growing in spite of its long years of independent existence. The Concept of Self is illustrated as a case in point.

  • Reclaiming Indian Psychology: Some Reflections

      Abstract: Abstract This short essay shares reflections on Sinha’s seminal paper published in 1965 from a historical perspective. It is organised in three sections. The first section delineates the changing world and Indian context from 1965 to 2022, with a discussion on colonisation, post-colonial psychology in India and the current movement towards decolonisation. Section two discusses some theoretical and meta-theoretical points on Indian psychology (IP), a few raised by Sinha. The final section concludes with the way forward for both IP as well as psychology in India.

  • Disentangling Dichotomies of Mental Healthcare Interactions Through a
           Queer Lens: Reflections of LGBT + Clients in Kolkata, India

      Abstract: Abstract The present study attempts to probe into the interactional experiences of Kolkata-based self-identified LGBT + participants (N = 10) aged between 18 and 30 years, with mental healthcare professionals in contexts of care, through a mixed-method approach. Experiences of clinical interactions in mental healthcare settings are evinced through semi-structured interviews. The bearing of such experiences upon participants’ perceived relationship quality with professional, help-seeking attitudes and disclosure expectations are explored with the help of standardized questionnaires. Implicit perceptions regarding clinical relationships were studied through storytelling exercise with TAT cards 1 and 12 M. Service inconsistencies are observed to be predominant in participant narratives pointing to lack of unified affirmative services. Ambivalence in perception of therapeutic relationship is both implicitly held and explicitly self-reported, despite positive help-seeking orientation and anticipated utility of self-disclosure in the present sample. Participants sought an affirmative focus in medical training and help-delivery protocols through legal interventions and advocacy of support groups.

  • The Social Culture of Bullying: Exploring the Institutions of Family and
           School

      Abstract: Abstract In the social cultural setup of the world, the differentiation between a man and a boy is almost universally established, with the man representing the evolved, comprehensive, mature and wise end of the spectrum, whereas the boy being the imperfect, meek, ignorant and premature organism. This polarity structures an acutely gendered concurrence, in that, a boy is always defined in a grown man’s world with a lack that also characterizes the female species. The aggrandizing features and the cultural reinforcements of the masculine inadvertently lead to the genesis of a tendency to prioritize this trait as the most desirable and the negation of all that falls outside its predefined markers. With the onset of puberty and the appearances of physiological changes in the body, the young boys with a generous influence of these alterations, tend to assert their superiority over others through both open and covert forms of bullying, the latter often falling within the growing menace of the phenomenon of cyberbullying. This paper attempts to argue that the phenomenon of bullying is both infused and ingrained in the psyche of the young through the primary institutions in the society, that is, the family, the schools, the external world, even often without consciously aiming to do so. The paper charts out the concept of bullying in schools and makes an assessment of the various biological as well as socio-cultural influences which generate this tendency among school boys. Making use of psychosocial data and real-life examples, the paper also suggests how schools, teachers and parents, may tackle bullying by regarding it as a behavioural problem and adopting approaches that bring positive interpersonal connections.

  • Positive Orientation and Social Capital: The Insignificance of the
           Mediating Effects of Social Network Sites Usages

      Abstract: Abstract This research examined the relationships among positive orientation, types of social network sites (SNS) usage, and social capital. 235 private university students in Malaysia, aged from 18 to 30 (M = 19.64, SD = 1.50), participated in this research. They completed items that reflect on self-esteem, life satisfaction, optimism, the intensity of SNS use, the three connection strategies employed on SNS, and the bridging and bonding aspects of social capital. Factor analysis supported that self-esteem, life satisfaction, and optimism formed a single construct that was interpreted as positive orientation or positivity. Analyses revealed that the specific indirect effects of active use of SNS and the enacted SNS connection strategies on the relationship between positive orientation and social capital were not significant. Results revealed that the inclination to use SNS to seek relevant social information facilitated both weak and strong ties. Despite the benefits of SNS on the development of social capital, individuals with high positivity were able to form weak and strong ties that are beneficial without relying on these online platforms. The implications of the results and directions for future research are discussed.
