  • Learning to draw parametric faces

      Abstract: Abstract Humans’ ability to draw faces accurately from memory is extremely rare. One source of difficulty is the drawing process itself, which requires converting a complex, three-dimensional mental representation to a two-dimensional drawing. To simplify the drawing process and more directly assess people’s recall of faces, we used the Parameterized Face Drawing (PFD) model (Day & Davidenko, Visual Cognition, 26(2), 89-99, 2018; Day & Davidenko, Journal of Vision, 19(11):7, 1–12, 2019) to generate simplified face stimuli that non-artists could draw. In Experiment 1, participants (N = 37) completed a sequential drawing-by-copying task in which they were given 60 s to draw each of 18 target faces by copying them using a stylus on a touchscreen. Following each drawing, participants were prompted to label a set of 20 key points on their drawing based on a reference face, which were used to compute the drawing’s accuracy. In Experiment 2, participants (N = 22) observed each target face for 15 s and were then given 60 s to draw it from memory. In Experiment 1, the accuracy of drawings improved slightly over the course of the 18 trials, although most of the improvement occurred during the first few trials. In Experiment 2 (drawing-from-memory), there was no evidence of improvement, although the null results are tentative given the small sample size. Despite weak evidence of learning, participants’ drawings captured the likeness of the target faces significantly better than chance. We discuss implications of these findings for the use of drawing as a method of face recall.

  • Evidence for a multidimensional account of cognitive and affective theory
           of mind: A state-trace analysis

      Abstract: Abstract Theory of mind (ToM) has been argued to be a multidimensional construct, with ToM inferences depending on distinct processes across affective and cognitive ToM tasks and across first-order cognitive and second-order cognitive ToM tasks. Behavioural evidence for a multidimensional account has primarily depended on dissociations identified via analysis of variance, a statistical approach insufficient for assessing dimensionality. Instead, state-trace analysis (STA) is a more appropriate statistical technique to uncover dimensionality. The current study first applied STA to two summary datasets that had previously identified key dissociations between cognitive and affective ToM; these reanalyses did not support a multidimensional account of ToM. Next, STA was applied to a more detailed dataset to reveal whether ToM is based on multiple processes in a sample of 115 older adults aged 60–85 years (M = 68.5, SD = 5.92, 61.7% female) with higher or lower emotion perception ability. Participants made ToM judgements about different social exchanges (e.g., sarcasm or lying). STA results supported a multidimensional account of ToM across first-order cognitive, second-order cognitive, and affective ToM subdomains. These results lay a more rigorous foundation for subsequent studies to further examine the dimensionality of ToM and to apply formal modelling, progressing the field’s understanding and measurement of the cognitive processes driving ToM judgements.

  • The impact of the use of masks on trait judgments and face recognition

      Abstract: Abstract Although effective in reducing virus transmission, face masks might compromise face recognition and trait judgments. With this study, we aimed to observe the influence of masks on face recognition and trait judgments—more specifically, in trustworthiness, dominance, and distinctiveness judgments. Also, we wanted to observe the possible influence of trait judgments on facial recognition for masked and unmasked faces, which has never been done before. For that, we conducted an online study where 140 participants observed and made trait judgments of masked and unmasked faces in a within-subjects design. After a distractive task, participants performed a recognition memory test. As expected, we observed a better recognition of faces shown without a mask during the study phase, which allowed the holistic processing of the faces. The worst performance was found for faces encoded with a mask but tested without it, occurring simultaneity disruption in holistic face processing and the violation of the encoding specificity principle. Regarding the trait judgments, unmasked faces were considered more distinctive, and masked faces were considered more trustworthy. More interestingly, we can conclude that facial distinctiveness predicts face recognition, regardless of mask use. In contrast, dominance judgments only predicted face recognition when faces were presented without a mask. When faces were exposed with masks, trustworthiness overrides dominance, becoming more critical to recognizing faces. We can interpret these results from an evolutionary perspective.

  • Drawing as a tool for investigating the nature of imagery representations
           of blind people: The case of the canonical size phenomenon

      Abstract: Abstract Several studies have shown that blind people, including those with congenital blindness, can use raised-line drawings, both for “reading” tactile graphics and for drawing unassisted. However, research on drawings produced by blind people has mainly been qualitative. The current experimental study was designed to investigate the under-researched issue of the size of drawings created by people with blindness. Participants (N = 59) varied in their visual status. Adventitiously blind people had previous visual experience and might use visual representations (e.g., when visualising objects in imagery/working memory). Congenitally blind people did not have any visual experience. The participant’s task was to draw from memory common objects that vary in size in the real world. The findings revealed that both groups of participants produced larger drawings of objects that have larger actual sizes. This means that the size of familiar objects is a property of blind people’s mental representations, regardless of their visual status. Our research also sheds light on the nature of the phenomenon of canonical size. Since we have found the canonical size effect in a group of people who are blind from birth, the assumption of the visual nature of this phenomenon – caused by the ocular-centric biases present in studies on drawing performance – should be revised.

  • Overcoming age differences in memory retrieval by reducing stereotype
           threat

      Abstract: Abstract Very little is known about whether and how socioemotional factors influence age differences in associative memory. Here, we tested the hypothesis that reducing the threat induced by age-based stereotypes can reduce age differences in learning performance and strategy. Using an associative learning task, we replicated the classic finding of age differences under a high-threat condition: older adults had longer reaction times than younger adults and were much more reluctant to use memory retrieval. However, age differences were greatly diminished under a low-threat condition. These findings demonstrate that memory retrieval is an ability not entirely lost as individuals age because merely reducing stereotype threat helped restoring it. We conclude that socioemotional factors, such as stereotype threat, should be considered when evaluating younger and older adults’ memory performance.

  • Comparing memory capacity across stimuli requires maximally dissimilar
           foils: Using deep convolutional neural networks to understand visual
           working memory capacity for real-world objects

      Abstract: Abstract The capacity of visual working and visual long-term memory plays a critical role in theories of cognitive architecture and the relationship between memory and other cognitive systems. Here, we argue that before asking the question of how capacity varies across different stimuli or what the upper bound of capacity is for a given memory system, it is necessary to establish a methodology that allows a fair comparison between distinct stimulus sets and conditions. One of the most important factors determining performance in a memory task is target/foil dissimilarity. We argue that only by maximizing the dissimilarity of the target and foil in each stimulus set can we provide a fair basis for memory comparisons between stimuli. In the current work we focus on a way to pick such foils objectively for complex, meaningful real-world objects by using deep convolutional neural networks, and we validate this using both memory tests and similarity metrics. Using this method, we then provide evidence that there is a greater capacity for real-world objects relative to simple colors in visual working memory; critically, we also show that this difference can be reduced or eliminated when non-comparable foils are used, potentially explaining why previous work has not always found such a difference. Our study thus demonstrates that working memory capacity depends on the type of information that is remembered and that assessing capacity depends critically on foil dissimilarity, especially when comparing memory performance and other cognitive systems across different stimulus sets.

  • Sequential encoding aids working memory for meaningful objects’
           identities but not for their colors

      Abstract: Abstract Previous studies have found that real-world objects’ identities are better remembered than simple features like colored circles, and this effect is particularly pronounced when these stimuli are encoded one by one in a serial, item-based way. Recent work has also demonstrated that memory for simple features like color is improved if these colors are part of real-world objects, suggesting that meaningful objects can serve as a robust memory scaffold for their associated low-level features. However, it is unclear whether the improved color memory that arises from the colors appearing on real-world objects is affected by encoding format, in particular whether items are encoded sequentially or simultaneously. We test this using randomly colored silhouettes of recognizable versus unrecognizable scrambled objects that offer a uniquely controlled set of stimuli to test color working memory of meaningful versus non-meaningful objects. Participants were presented with four stimuli (silhouettes of objects or scrambled shapes) simultaneously or sequentially. After a short delay, they reported either which colors or which shapes they saw in a two-alternative forced-choice task. We replicated previous findings that meaningful stimuli boost working memory performance for colors (Exp. 1). We found that when participants remembered the colors (Exp. 2) there was no difference in performance across the two encoding formats. However, when participants remembered the shapes and thus identity of the objects (Exp. 3), sequential presentation resulted in better performance than simultaneous presentation. Overall, these results show that different encoding formats can flexibly impact visual working memory depending on what the memory-relevant feature is.

  • Effects of lexical skills and orthographic neighborhood size in word
           memory

      Abstract: Abstract Two experiments were designed to investigate the relationship between individual lexical skills in young adults and memory performance on words varying by their orthographic neighborhood size. In Experiment 1, a sample of 100 university students were administrated a set of spelling, reading, and vocabulary tests to assess their lexical skills. Then, they had to learn mixed lists of words from high and low neighborhood size and perform free recall and memory recognition tasks. Importantly, high lexical skills were found to enhance free recall and, to a lesser extent, recognition. In addition, a typical mirror effect of neighborhood size was found in recognition as words were better recognized and also produced less false alarms when they had a low neighborhood size. In Experiment 2, pure lists of words were designed and a new sample of 90 university students was assessed. We replicated the effect of lexical skills in free recall and the effect of neighborhood size for hits in recognition. Spelling skills were found to interact with neighborhood size in free recall in that low spelling skills were associated with a facilitatory effect of neighborhood size. In recognition, a relation between reading skills and neighborhood size was found such that the higher the reading skills, the higher was the inhibitory effect of neighborhood size. These results provide new evidence of an influence of lexical skills in word memory performance and underline the role of orthographic neighborhood size in episodic memory tasks.

  • The role of framing, agency and uncertainty in a focus-divide dilemma

      Abstract: How to prioritise multiple objectives is a common dilemma of daily life. A simple and effective decision rule is to focus resources when the tasks are difficult, and divide when tasks are easy. Nonetheless, in experimental paradigms of this dilemma, participants make highly variable and suboptimal strategic decisions when asked to allocate resources to two competing goals that vary in difficulty. We developed a new version in which participants had to choose where to park a fire truck between houses of varying distances apart. Unlike in the previous versions of the dilemma, participants approached the optimal strategy in this task. Three key differences between the fire truck version and previous versions of the task were investigated: (1) Framing (whether the objectives are familiar or abstract), by comparing a group who placed cartoon trucks between houses to a group performing the same task with abstract shapes; (2) Agency (how much of the task is under the participants’ direct control), by comparing groups who controlled the movement of the truck to those who did not; (3) Uncertainty, by adding variability to the driving speed of the truck to make success or failure on a given trial more difficult to predict. Framing and agency did not influence strategic decisions. When adding variability to outcomes, however, decisions shifted away from optimal. The results suggest choices become more variable when the outcome is less certain, consistent with exploration of response alternatives triggered by an inability to predict success.

  • Semantic-to-autobiographical memory priming is ubiquitous

      Abstract: Abstract It is now well established that the activation of semantic memories leads to the activation of autobiographical memories. Studies have shown that semantic processing of words or pictures primes autobiographical memories on voluntary and involuntary autobiographical memory tasks (the Crovitz cue-word task and the vigilance task). Known as semantic-to-autobiographical memory priming, our goal in the current study was to demonstrate the ubiquitous nature of this form of priming by showing that a wide variety of stimuli will prime involuntary autobiographical memories on the vigilance task. In Experiment 1, semantic-to-autobiographical priming was obtained on the vigilance task following the processing of sounds (e.g., the sound of bowling) and spoken words (e.g., the word bowling). In Experiment 2, semantic-to-autobiographical priming was observed on the vigilance task following tactile processing (e.g., the objects ball, glasses) and visual word processing (e.g., the words ball, glasses). In Experiment 3, semantic-to-autobiographical priming was observed on the vigilance task following the processing of videos (e.g., videos of a marching parade) and visual word processing (e.g., the word parade). The results of these experiments support the idea that semantic-to-autobiographical activations occur across a wide variety of stimuli (e.g., linguistic, perceptual). The results also further support the idea that semantic-to-autobiographical memory priming may play an important role in the production of involuntary memories in everyday life. Additional implications (for priming theory and autobiographical memory functions) are discussed.

  • Time heals all wounds' Naïve theories about the fading of affect
           associated with autobiographical events

      Abstract: Abstract The current research examined the naïve theories that individuals hold about how affect fades over time. In three studies (with various replications), participants read about positive and negative events and estimated the emotional impact of those events on either themselves or a hypothetical other over different time frames (i.e., 1 week, 1 month, 1 year—Studies 1a–1c) or how long it would take for specific amounts of fade to occur (Studies 2a & 2b). In a final study, participants were directly asked about their beliefs regarding affect fade. Results demonstrated that people have inaccurate expectations about affect fade for positive and negative events. Specifically, participants rate that positive events fade more in the short term, but that negative events fade more in the long term. Results are discussed in terms of how these (incorrect) naïve theories of affect fade relate to metacognitive biases in memory and emotion.

  • A computational account of item-based directed forgetting for nonwords:
           Incorporating orthographic representations in MINERVA 2

      Abstract: Abstract Recent research on item-method directed forgetting demonstrates that forget instructions not only decrease recognition for targets, but also decrease false recognition for foils from the same semantic categories as targets instructed to be forgotten. According to the selective rehearsal account of directed forgetting, this finding suggests that remember instructions may engage elaborative rehearsal of the category-level information of items. In contrast to this explanation, Reid and Jamieson (Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology / Revue canadienne de psychologie expérimentale, 76(2), 75–86, 2022) proposed that the differential rates of false recognition may emerge at retrieval when foils from “remember” and “forget” categories are compared to traces in memory. Using MINERVA S, an instance model of memory based on MINERVA 2 that incorporates structured semantic representations, Reid and Jamieson successfully simulated lower false recognition for foils from “forget” categories without assuming rehearsal of category-level information. In this study, we extend the directed forgetting paradigm to categories consisting of orthographically related nonwords. Presumably participants would have difficulty rehearsing category-level information for these items because they would have no pre-experimental knowledge of these categories. To simulate the findings in MINERVA S, we imported structured orthographic representations rather than semantic representations. The model not only predicted differential rates of false recognition for foils from “remember” and “forget” categories, but also predicted higher rates of false recognition overall than what was observed for semantic categories. The empirical data closely matched these predictions. These data suggest that differential rates of false recognition due to remember and forget instructions emerge at retrieval when participants compare recognition probes to traces stored in memory.

  • Proficiency versus lexical processing efficiency as a measure of L2
           lexical quality: Individual differences in word-frequency effects in L2
           visual word recognition

      Abstract: Abstract This study investigated Korean-English second language (L2) speakers’ recognition of high- and low-frequency English words and compared two individual difference measures in their role of representing lexical quality in L2: cloze test scores and inverse efficiency scores (IES; response latency corrected for the amount of errors committed), obtained from lexical decision on a separate set of words. Cloze test scores aimed to assess general L2 proficiency, whereas IES was purported to measure lexical processing efficiency. 109 adult Korean-English L2 speakers participated in the study. Results showed significant main effects of word frequency, cloze test scores, and IES on lexical decision times, replicating previous findings and confirming the predictions of the lexical quality hypothesis. Crucially, IES was revealed to be a better measure of individual differences in L2 lexical quality than were cloze test scores. These findings suggest that lexical quality (which can be operationalized in terms of online lexical processing efficiency) comprises a distinct subdomain of language skills on its own, which cannot be measured in full using conventional language proficiency tests.

  • Look into my eyes: a “faceless” avatar interviewer lowers reporting
           threshold for adult eyewitnesses

      Abstract: Abstract Evidential interviewing is often used to gather important information, which can determine the outcome of a criminal case. An interviewer’s facial features, however, may impact reporting during this task. Here, we investigated adults’ interview performance using a novel tool—a faceless avatar interviewer—designed to minimize the impact of an interviewer’s visual communication signals, potentially enhancing memory performance. Adults were interviewed about the details of a video by (1) a human-appearing avatar or a human interviewer (Experiment 1; N = 105) or (2) a human-appearing avatar or a faceless avatar interviewer (Experiment 2; N = 109). Participants assigned to the avatar interviewer condition were (1) asked whether they thought the interviewer was either computer or human operated (Experiment 1) or (2) explicitly told that the interviewer was either computer or human operated (Experiment 2). Adults’ memory performance was statistically equivalent when they were interviewed by a human-appearing avatar or a human interviewer, but, relative to the human-appearing avatar, adults who were interviewed by a faceless avatar reported more correct (but also incorrect) details in response to free-recall questions. Participants who indicated that the avatar interviewer was computer operated—as opposed to human operated—provided more accurate memory reports, but specifically telling participants that the avatar was computer operated or human operated had no influence on their memory reports. The present study introduced a novel interviewing tool and highlighted the possible cognitive and social influences of an interviewer’s facial features on adults’ report of a witnessed event.

  • Absolute pitch judgments of familiar melodies generalize across timbre and
           octave

      Abstract: Abstract Most listeners can determine when a familiar recording of music has been shifted in musical key by as little as one semitone (e.g., from B to C major). These findings appear to suggest that absolute pitch memory is widespread in the general population. However, the use of familiar recordings makes it unclear whether these findings genuinely reflect absolute melody-key associations for at least two reasons. First, listeners may be able to use spectral cues from the familiar instrumentation of the recordings to determine when a familiar recording has been shifted in pitch. Second, listeners may be able to rely solely on pitch height cues (e.g., relying on a feeling that an incorrect recording sounds “too high” or “too low”). Neither of these strategies would require an understanding of pitch chroma or musical key. The present experiments thus assessed whether listeners could make accurate absolute melody-key judgments when listening to novel versions of these melodies, differing from the iconic recording in timbre (Experiment 1) or timbre and octave (Experiment 2). Listeners in both experiments were able to select the correct-key version of the familiar melody at rates that were well above chance. These results fit within a growing body of research supporting the idea that most listeners, regardless of formal musical training, have robust representations of absolute pitch – based on pitch chroma – that generalize to novel listening situations. Implications for theories of auditory pitch memory are discussed.

  • The interaction between motor simulation and spatial perspective-taking in
           action language: a cross-cultural study

      Abstract: Abstract Growing evidence has revealed the crucial role of motor simulation and spatial perspective-taking in action language. However, there is still a lack of understanding of how motor and spatial processes interact when there are multiple actors involved, and if embodied processes are consistent across different cultures. To address this gap, we examined the interaction between motor simulation and spatial perspective-taking in action-sentences comprehension, along with the consistency of embodied processes across cultures. We collected data from Italian and US English speakers using an online sentence-picture verification task. The participants completed four conditions: two congruent (i.e., the participant is the agent in the sentence and the photo; the agent is someone else interacting with the participant in both the sentence and the picture) and two incongruent (i.e., the agents of the sentence and the picture do not match). The results show that when the perspective of the picture matched that described in the sentence-processing reaction times (RTs) were faster than in the incongruent conditions. In the congruent conditions where the agent is someone else, RTs were slower compared to the condition where the participant is the agent. This has been interpreted as claiming that motor simulation and perspective-taking are independent processes interacting during sentence comprehension (e.g., motor simulation is always run in the role of the agent, but we can adopt multiple perspectives depending on the pronouns and the contextual cues). Furthermore, Bayesian analysis provided evidence that embodied processing of action language entwines a common mechanism, suggesting cross-cultural consistency of embodied processes.

  • Activation levels of plausible alternatives in conversational negation

      Abstract: Abstract Negation is often used to contradict or correct (e.g. There is no dog here.). While rejecting some state of affairs that is presumed to hold for the recipient (e.g. There is a dog here.), the speaker might implicitly suggest a set of plausible alternatives (e.g. There is a wolf instead.). Prior work indicates that alternatives are highly relevant to the comprehension of sentences involving focus: in priming studies, listeners infer plausible alternatives to focused items even when they are not contextually available. So far it is unclear whether negation similarly activates an automatic search for plausible alternatives. The current study was designed to investigate this question, by looking at the activation levels of nouns after negative and affirmative sentences. In a series of priming experiments, subjects were presented with negative and affirmative sentences (e.g. There is an/no apple.), followed by a lexical decision task with targets including plausible alternatives (e.g. pear), as well as semantically related but implausible alternatives (e.g. seed). An interaction of Sentence Polarity and Prime-Target Relation was expected, with negation facilitating responses to plausible alternatives. Results of the first experiment were numerically in line with the hypothesis but the interaction just missed significance level. A post hoc analysis revealed the expected significant interaction. Possible roles of sentential context and goodness of alternatives are discussed. A further experiment confirms that the goodness of alternatives is in fact critical in modulating the effect.

  • Choice between decision-making strategies in human route-following

      Abstract: Abstract To follow a prescribed route, we must decide which way to turn at intersections. To do so, we can memorize either the serial order of directions or the associations between spatial cues and directions (“at the drug store, turn left”). Here, we investigate which of these two strategies is used if both are available. In Task S, all intersections looked exactly alike, and participants therefore had to use the serial order strategy to decide which way their route continued. In Task SA, each intersection displayed a unique spatial cue, and participants therefore could use either strategy. In Task A, each intersection displayed a unique cue, but the serial order of cues varied between trips, and participants therefore had to use the associative cue strategy. We found that route-following accuracy increased from trip to trip, was higher on routes with 12 rather than 18 intersections, and was higher on Task SA than on the other two tasks, both with 12 and with 18 intersections. Furthermore, participants on Task SA acquired substantial knowledge about the serial order of directions as well as about cue–direction associations, both with 12 and with 18 intersections. From this we conclude that, when both strategies were available, participants did not pick the better one but rather used both. This represents dual encoding, a phenomenon previously described for more elementary memory tasks. We further conclude that dual encoding may be implemented even if the memory load is not very high (i.e., even with only 12 intersections).

  • Sensitivity to word endings as probabilistic orthographic cues to lexical
           stress among English as second language learners

      Abstract: Abstract Assigning stress to polysyllabic words is a crucial aspect of reading aloud in English. Previous research demonstrated that native English speakers are sensitive to word endings as probabilistic orthographic cues to stress assignment. However, little is known about if second language (L2) learners of English are sensitive to word endings as cues to lexical stress. The current study investigated whether native Chinese-speakers learning English as a second language (ESL) are sensitive to word endings as probabilistic orthographic cues to lexical stress. Our ESL learners demonstrated sensitivity to word endings as cues in a stress-assignment task and a naming task. With the increase in language proficiency, ESL learners responded more accurately in the stress-assignment task. Moreover, stress position and language proficiency moderated the strength of the sensitivity, with a trochaic bias and better proficiency leading to better sensitivity in the stress-assignment task. However, as language proficiency increased, participants’ naming speed became faster in iambic but slower in trochaic patterns, reflecting the learners’ fledgling knowledge about the specific stress patterns associated with varying orthographic cues, especially in a demanding naming task. Taken together, the evidence from our ESL learners fits in the proposed statistical learning mechanism, that is, L2 learners are able to implicitly extract statistical regularities from linguistic materials, the orthographic cues to lexical stress in our study. Stress position and language proficiency both play a role in developing this sensitivity.

      Abstract: Abstract The changing state effect is the finding that a stream of irrelevant sounds that change more (e.g., different digits in random order) disrupts memory more than a stream of irrelevant sounds that change less (e.g., a single digit repeated over and over). According to the Object-Oriented Episodic Record (O-OER) model, the changing state effect will be observed only in memory tasks that have an order component or which induce serial rehearsal or serial processing. In contrast, other accounts—including the Feature Model, the Primacy Model, and various attentional theories—predict that the changing state effect should be observable when there is no order component. Experiment 1 first demonstrated that the irrelevant stimuli created for the current experiments produced a changing state effect in immediate serial recall in both on-campus and online samples. Then, three experiments assessed whether a changing state effect is observable in a surprise 2AFC recognition test. Experiment 2 replicated Stokes and Arnell (2012, Memory & Cognition, 40, 918–931), who found that although irrelevant sounds reduce performance on a surprise recognition test of words presented previously in a lexical decision task, they do not produce a changing state effect. Experiments 3 and 4 used two different encoding tasks (pleasantness and frequency judgment) and also found no changing state effect. The results support the prediction of the O-OER model and provide additional evidence against the other accounts.
