  • What is a blink' Classifying and characterizing blinks in eye openness
           signals

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Blinks, the closing and opening of the eyelids, are used in a wide array of fields where human function and behavior are studied. In data from video-based eye trackers, blink rate and duration are often estimated from the pupil-size signal. However, blinks and their parameters can be estimated only indirectly from this signal, since it does not explicitly contain information about the eyelid position. We ask whether blinks detected from an eye openness signal that estimates the distance between the eyelids (EO blinks) are comparable to blinks detected with a traditional algorithm using the pupil-size signal (PS blinks) and how robust blink detection is when data quality is low. In terms of rate, there was an almost-perfect overlap between EO and PS blink (F1 score: 0.98) when the head was in the center of the eye tracker’s tracking range where data quality was high and a high overlap (F1 score 0.94) when the head was at the edge of the tracking range where data quality was worse. When there was a difference in blink rate between EO and PS blinks, it was mainly due to data loss in the pupil-size signal. Blink durations were about 60 ms longer in EO blinks compared to PS blinks. Moreover, the dynamics of EO blinks was similar to results from previous literature. We conclude that the eye openness signal together with our proposed blink detection algorithm provides an advantageous method to detect and describe blinks in greater detail.

  • Dimensionality and optimal combination of autonomic fear-conditioning
           measures in humans

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Fear conditioning, also termed threat conditioning, is a commonly used learning model with clinical relevance. Quantification of threat conditioning in humans often relies on conditioned autonomic responses such as skin conductance responses (SCR), pupil size responses (PSR), heart period responses (HPR), or respiration amplitude responses (RAR), which are usually analyzed separately. Here, we investigate whether inter-individual variability in differential conditioned responses, averaged across acquisition, exhibits a multi-dimensional structure, and the extent to which their linear combination could enhance the precision of inference on whether threat conditioning has occurred. In a mega-analytic approach, we re-analyze nine data sets including 256 individuals, acquired by the group of the last author, using standard routines in the framework of psychophysiological modeling (PsPM). Our analysis revealed systematic differences in effect size between measures across datasets, but no evidence for a multidimensional structure across various combinations of measures. We derive the statistically optimal weights for combining the four measures and subsets thereof, and we provide out-of-sample performance metrics for these weights, accompanied by bias-corrected confidence intervals. We show that to achieve the same statistical power, combining measures allows for a relevant reduction in sample size, which in a common scenario amounts to roughly 24%. To summarize, we demonstrate a one-dimensional structure of threat conditioning measures, systematic differences in effect size between measures, and provide weights for their optimal linear combination in terms of maximal retrodictive validity.

  • Dealing with missing data in multi-informant studies: A comparison of
           approaches

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Multi-informant studies are popular in social and behavioral science. However, their data analyses are challenging because data from different informants carry both shared and unique information and are often incomplete. Using Monte Carlo Simulation, the current study compares three approaches that can be used to analyze incomplete multi-informant data when there is a distinction between reference and nonreference informants. These approaches include a two-method measurement model for planned missing data (2MM-PMD), treating nonreference informants’ reports as auxiliary variables with the full-information maximum likelihood method or multiple imputation, and listwise deletion. The result suggests that 2MM-PMD, when correctly specified and data are missing at random, has the best overall performance among the examined approaches regarding point estimates, type I error rates, and statistical power. In addition, it is also more robust to data that are not missing at random.

  • A tutorial on fitting joint models of M/EEG and behavior to understand
           cognition

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract We present motivation and practical steps necessary to find parameter estimates of joint models of behavior and neural electrophysiological data. This tutorial is written for researchers wishing to build joint models of human behavior and scalp and intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) or magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data, and more specifically those researchers who seek to understand human cognition. Although these techniques could easily be applied to animal models, the focus of this tutorial is on human participants. Joint modeling of M/EEG and behavior requires some knowledge of existing computational and cognitive theories, M/EEG artifact correction, M/EEG analysis techniques, cognitive modeling, and programming for statistical modeling implementation. This paper seeks to give an introduction to these techniques as they apply to estimating parameters from neurocognitive models of M/EEG and human behavior, and to evaluate model results and compare models. Due to our research and knowledge on the subject matter, our examples in this paper will focus on testing specific hypotheses in human decision-making theory. However, most of the motivation and discussion of this paper applies across many modeling procedures and applications. We provide Python (and linked R) code examples in the tutorial and appendix. Readers are encouraged to try the exercises at the end of the document.

  • A 2PLM-RANK multidimensional forced-choice model and its fast estimation
           algorithm

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract High-stakes non-cognitive tests frequently employ forced-choice (FC) scales to deter faking. To mitigate the issue of score ipsativity derived, many scoring models have been devised. Among them, the multi-unidimensional pairwise preference (MUPP) framework is a highly flexible and commonly used framework. However, the original MUPP model was developed for unfolding response process and can only handle paired comparisons. The present study proposes the 2PLM-RANK as a generalization of the MUPP model to accommodate dominance RANK format response. In addition, an improved stochastic EM (iStEM) algorithm is devised for more stable and efficient parameter estimation. Simulation results generally supported the efficiency and utility of the new algorithm in estimating the 2PLM-RANK when applied to both triplets and tetrads across various conditions. An empirical illustration with responses to a 24-dimensional personality test further supported the practicality of the proposed model. To further aid in the application of the new model, a user-friendly R package is also provided.

  • Many nonnormalities, one simulation: Do different data generation
           algorithms affect study results'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Monte Carlo simulation studies are among the primary scientific outputs contributed by methodologists, guiding application of various statistical tools in practice. Although methodological researchers routinely extend simulation study findings through follow-up work, few studies are ever replicated. Simulation studies are susceptible to factors that can contribute to replicability failures, however. This paper sought to conduct a meta-scientific study by replicating one highly cited simulation study (Curran et al., Psychological Methods, 1, 16-29, 1996) that investigated the robustness of normal theory maximum likelihood (ML)-based chi-square fit statistics under multivariate nonnormality. We further examined the generalizability of the original study findings across different nonnormal data generation algorithms. Our replication results were generally consistent with original findings, but we discerned several differences. Our generalizability results were more mixed. Only two results observed under the original data generation algorithm held completely across other algorithms examined. One of the most striking findings we observed was that results associated with the independent generator (IG) data generation algorithm vastly differed from other procedures examined and suggested that ML was robust to nonnormality for the particular factor model used in the simulation. Findings point to the reality that extant methodological recommendations may not be universally valid in contexts where multiple data generation algorithms exist for a given data characteristic. We recommend that researchers consider multiple approaches to generating a specific data or model characteristic (when more than one is available) to optimize the generalizability of simulation results.

  • Multilevel modeling in single-case studies with zero-inflated and
           overdispersed count data

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Count outcomes are frequently encountered in single-case experimental designs (SCEDs). Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) have shown promise in handling overdispersed count data. However, the presence of excessive zeros in the baseline phase of SCEDs introduces a more complex issue known as zero-inflation, often overlooked by researchers. This study aimed to deal with zero-inflated and overdispersed count data within a multiple-baseline design (MBD) in single-case studies. It examined the performance of various GLMMs (Poisson, negative binomial [NB], zero-inflated Poisson [ZIP], and zero-inflated negative binomial [ZINB] models) in estimating treatment effects and generating inferential statistics. Additionally, a real example was used to demonstrate the analysis of zero-inflated and overdispersed count data. The simulation results indicated that the ZINB model provided accurate estimates for treatment effects, while the other three models yielded biased estimates. The inferential statistics obtained from the ZINB model were reliable when the baseline rate was low. However, when the data were overdispersed but not zero-inflated, both the ZINB and ZIP models exhibited poor performance in accurately estimating treatment effects. These findings contribute to our understanding of using GLMMs to handle zero-inflated and overdispersed count data in SCEDs. The implications, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

  • Beyond alpha and omega: The accuracy of single-test reliability estimators
           in unidimensional continuous data

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Coefficient alpha is commonly used as a reliability estimator. However, several estimators are believed to be more accurate than alpha, with factor analysis (FA) estimators being the most commonly recommended. Furthermore, unstandardized estimators are considered more accurate than standardized estimators. In other words, the existing literature suggests that unstandardized FA estimators are the most accurate regardless of data characteristics. To test whether this conventional knowledge is appropriate, this study examines the accuracy of 12 estimators using a Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that several estimators are more accurate than alpha, including both FA and non-FA estimators. The most accurate on average is a standardized FA estimator. Unstandardized estimators (e.g., alpha) are less accurate on average than the corresponding standardized estimators (e.g., standardized alpha). However, the accuracy of estimators is affected to varying degrees by data characteristics (e.g., sample size, number of items, outliers). For example, standardized estimators are more accurate than unstandardized estimators with a small sample size and many outliers, and vice versa. The greatest lower bound is the most accurate when the number of items is 3 but severely overestimates reliability when the number of items is more than 3. In conclusion, estimators have their advantageous data characteristics, and no estimator is the most accurate for all data characteristics.

  • Dimensionality assessment in the presence of wording effects: A network
           psychometric and factorial approach

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study proposes a procedure for substantive dimensionality estimation in the presence of wording effects, the inconsistent response to regular and reversed self-report items. The procedure developed consists of subtracting an approximate estimate of the wording effects variance from the sample correlation matrix and then estimating the substantive dimensionality on the residual correlation matrix. This is achieved by estimating a random intercept factor with unit loadings for all the regular and unrecoded reversed items. The accuracy of the procedure was evaluated through an extensive simulation study that manipulated nine relevant variables and employed the exploratory graph analysis (EGA) and parallel analysis (PA) retention methods. The results indicated that combining the proposed procedure with EGA or PA achieved high accuracy in estimating the substantive latent dimensionality, but that EGA was superior. Additionally, the present findings shed light on the complex ways that wording effects impact the dimensionality estimates when the response bias in the data is ignored. A tutorial on substantive dimensionality estimation with the R package EGAnet is offered, as well as practical guidelines for applied researchers.

  • Capturing individual differences in sentence processing: How reliable is
           the self-paced reading task'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Advances in research on language processing have originally come from group-level comparisons, but there is now a growing interest in individual differences. To investigate individual differences, tasks that have shown robust group-level differences are often used with the implicit assumption that they will also be reliable when used as an individual differences measure. Here, we examined whether one of the primary tasks used in psycholinguistic research on language processing, the self-paced reading task, can reliably measure individual differences in relative clause processing. We replicated the well-established effects of relative clauses at the group level, with object relative clauses being more difficult to process than subject relative clauses. However, when using difference scores, the reliability of the size of the relative clause effect was close to zero because the self-paced reading times for the different relative clause types were highly correlated within individuals. Nonetheless, we found that the self-paced reading task can be used to reliably capture individual differences in overall reading speed as well as key sentence regions when the two types of relative clause sentences are considered separately. Our results indicate that both the reliability and validity of different sentence regions need to be assessed to determine whether and when self-paced reading can be used to examine individual differences in language processing.

  • Standardizing norms for 1286 colored pictures in Cantonese

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study established psycholinguistic norms in Cantonese for a set of 1286 colored pictures sourced from several picture databases, including 750 colored line drawings from MultiPic (Duñabeitia et al., 2018) and 536 photographs selected for McRae et al. (2005) concepts. The pictures underwent rigorous normalization processes. We provided picture characteristics including name and concept agreement, familiarity, visual complexity, and frequency of modal responses. Through correlational analyses, we observed strong interrelationships among these variables. We also compared the current Cantonese norming to other languages and demonstrated similarity and variations among different languages. Additionally, we embraced the multilingual diversity within the current sample, and found that higher Cantonese proficiency but lower non-native language proficiency were associated with better spoken picture naming. Last but not least, we validated the predictive power of normed variables calculated from typed responses to spoken picture naming, and the consistency between typed and spoken responses. The present norming provides a timely and valuable alternative for researchers in the field of psycholinguistics, especially those studying Cantonese production and lexical retrieval. All raw data, analysis scripts, and final norming results are available online as psycholinguistic norms for Cantonese in the following link at the Open Science Framework: https://osf.io/dz9j6/'view_only=a452d8a56c92430b9dedf21ac26b1bc1.

Abstract: Abstract The Think/No-Think (TNT) task has just celebrated 20 years since its inception, and its use has been growing as a tool to investigate the mechanisms underlying memory control and its neural underpinnings. Here, we present a theoretical and practical guide for designing, implementing, and running TNT studies. For this purpose, we provide a step-by-step description of the structure of the TNT task, methodological choices that can be made, parameters that can be chosen, instruments available, aspects to be aware of, systematic information about how to run a study and analyze the data. Importantly, we provide a TNT training package (as Supplementary Material), that is, a series of multimedia materials (e.g., tutorial videos, informative HTML pages, MATLAB code to run experiments, questionnaires, scoring sheets, etc.) to complement this method paper and facilitate a deeper understanding of the TNT task, its rationale, and how to set it up in practice. Given the recent discussion about the replication crisis in the behavioral sciences, we hope that this contribution will increase standardization, reliability, and replicability across laboratories.

  • Modality matters: Three auditory conflict tasks to measure individual
           differences in attention control

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Early work on selective attention used auditory-based tasks, such as dichotic listening, to shed light on capacity limitations and individual differences in these limitations. Today, there is great interest in individual differences in attentional abilities, but the field has shifted towards visual-modality tasks. Furthermore, most conflict-based tests of attention control lack reliability due to low signal-to-noise ratios and the use of difference scores. Critically, it is unclear to what extent attention control generalizes across sensory modalities, and without reliable auditory-based tests, an answer to this question will remain elusive. To this end, we developed three auditory-based tests of attention control that use an adaptive response deadline (DL) to account for speed–accuracy trade-offs: Auditory Simon DL, Auditory Flanker DL, and Auditory Stroop DL. In a large sample (N = 316), we investigated the psychometric properties of the three auditory conflict tasks, tested whether attention control is better modeled as a unitary factor or modality-specific factors, and estimated the extent to which unique variance in modality-specific factors contributed incrementally to the prediction of dichotic listening and multitasking performance. Our analyses indicated that the auditory conflict tasks have strong psychometric properties and demonstrate convergent validity with visual tests of attention control. Auditory and visual attention control factors were highly correlated (r = .81)—even after controlling for perceptual processing speed (r = .75). Modality-specific attention control factors accounted for unique variance in modality-matched criterion measures, but the majority of the explained variance was modality-general. The results suggest an interplay between modality-general attention control and modality-specific processing.

  • NSP-SCD: A corpus construction protocol for child-directed print in
           understudied languages

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Child-directed print corpora enable systematic psycholinguistic investigations, but this research infrastructure is not available in many understudied languages. Moreover, researchers of understudied languages are dependent on manual tagging because precise automatized parsers are not yet available. One plausible way forward is to limit the intensive work to a small-sized corpus. However, with little systematic enquiry about approaches to corpus construction, it is unclear how robust a small corpus can be made. The current study examines the potential of a non-sequential sampling protocol for small corpus development (NSP-SCD) through a cross-corpora and within-corpus analysis. A corpus comprising 17,584 words was developed by applying the protocol to a larger corpus of 150,595 words from children’s books for 3-to-10-year-olds. While the larger corpus will by definition have more instances of unique words and unique orthographic units, still, the selectively sampled small corpus approximated the larger corpus for lexical and orthographic diversity and was equivalent for orthographic representation and word length. Psycholinguistic complexity increased by book level and varied by parts of speech. Finally, in a robustness check of lexical diversity, the non-sequentially sampled small corpus was more efficient compared to a same-sized corpus constructed by simply using all sentences from a few books (402 books vs. seven books). If a small corpus must be used then non-sequential sampling from books stratified by book level makes the corpus statistics better approximate what is found in larger corpora. Overall, the protocol shows promise as a tool to advance the science of child language acquisition in understudied languages.

  • A Mixture Fluency model using responses and response times with cognitive
           diagnosis model framework

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Random guessing behaviors are frequently observed in low-stakes assessments, often attributed to factors such as test-takers lacking motivation or experiencing time constraints and fatigue. Existing research suggests that responses stemming from random guessing behaviors introduce biases into the constructs and relationships of interest. This is particularly problematic when estimating the relationship between speed and ability. This study introduces a Mixture Fluency model designed to account for random guessing behaviors while utilizing valid response accuracy and response time to uncover students' latent attribute profiles. The model directly addresses a limitation present in the Fluency cognitive diagnostic model (Wang & Chen, Psychometrika, 85, 600–629, (2020), which assumes that test-takers consistently employ solution behaviors when answering questions. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed Mixture Fluency model, we conducted a simulation study encompassing various simulation conditions. Results from this study not only confirm the model's ability to detect potential random guessing behaviors but also demonstrate its capacity to enhance the inference of targeted latent constructs within the assessment. Additionally, we showcase the practical utility of the proposed model through an application to real data.

  • eyeScrollR: A software method for reproducible mapping of eye-tracking
           data from scrollable web pages

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The Internet has become an important part of our lives and an increasing number of researchers use eye-tracking technology to examine attention and behavior in online environments. Researchers, however, face a significant challenge in mapping eye-tracking data from scrollable web pages. We describe the R package eyeScrollR for mapping eye-tracking data from scrollable content such as web pages. The package re-maps eye-tracking gaze coordinates to full-page coordinates with a deterministic algorithm based on mouse scroll data. The package includes options for handling common situations, such as sticky menus or ads that remain visible when the user scrolls. We test the package’s validity in different hardware and software settings and on different web pages and show that it is highly accurate when tested against manual coding. Compared to current methods, eyeScrollR provides a more reproducible and reliable approach for mapping eye-tracking data from scrollable web pages. With its open code and free availability, we recommend eyeScrollR as an essential tool for eye-tracking researchers, particularly those who adhere to open-science principles. The eyeScrollR package offers a valuable contribution to the field of eye-tracking research, facilitating accurate and standardized analysis of eye-tracking data in web scrolling contexts.

  • Revisiting Snodgrass and Vanderwart in photograph form: The Keele Photo
           Stimulus Set (KPSS)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Over the last 40 years, object recognition studies have moved from using simple line drawings, to more detailed illustrations, to more ecologically valid photographic representations. Researchers now have access to various stimuli sets, however, existing sets lack the ability to independently manipulate item format, as the concepts depicted are unique to the set they derive from. To enable such comparisons, Rossion and Pourtois (2004) revisited Snodgrass and Vanderwart’s (1980) line drawings and digitally re-drew the objects, adding texture and shading. In the current study, we took this further and created a set of stimuli that showcase the same objects in photographic form. We selected six photographs of each object (three color/three grayscale) and collected normative data and RTs. Naming accuracy and agreement was high for all photographs and appeared to steadily increase with format distinctiveness. In contrast to previous data patterns for drawings, naming agreement (H values) did not differ between grey and color photographs, nor did familiarity ratings. However, grey photographs received significantly lower mental imagery agreement and visual complexity scores than color photographs. This suggests that, in comparison to drawings, the ecological nature of photographs may facilitate deeper critical evaluation of whether they offer a good match to a mental representation. Color may therefore play a more vital role in photographs than in drawings, aiding participants in judging the match with their mental representation. This new photographic stimulus set and corresponding normative data provide valuable materials for a wide range of experimental studies of object recognition.

  • Evaluating two small-sample corrections for fixed-effects standard errors
and inferences in multilevel models with heteroscedastic, unbalanced,
           clustered data

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Multilevel modeling (MLM) is commonly used in psychological research to model clustered data. However, data in applied research usually violate one of the essential assumptions of MLM—homogeneity of variance. While the fixed-effect estimates produced by the maximum likelihood method remain unbiased, the standard errors for the fixed effects are misestimated, resulting in inaccurate inferences and inflated or deflated type I error rates. To correct the bias in fixed effects standard errors and provide valid inferences, small-sample corrections such as the Kenward-Roger (KR) adjustment and the adjusted cluster-robust standard errors (CR-SEs) with the Satterthwaite approximation for t tests have been used. The current study compares KR with random slope (RS) models and the adjusted CR-SEs with ordinary least squares (OLS), random intercept (RI) and RS models to analyze small, heteroscedastic, clustered data using a Monte Carlo simulation. Results show the KR procedure with RS models has large biases and inflated type I error rates for between-cluster effects in the presence of level 2 heteroscedasticity. In contrast, the adjusted CR-SEs generally yield results with acceptable biases and maintain type I error rates close to the nominal level for all examined models. Thus, when the interest is only in within-cluster effect, any model with the adjusted CR-SEs could be used. However, when the interest is to make accurate inferences of the between-cluster effect, researchers should use the adjusted CR-SEs with RS to have higher power and guard against unmodeled heterogeneity. We reanalyzed an example in Snijders & Bosker (2012) to demonstrate the use of the adjusted CR-SEs with different models.

  • Handling dependent samples in meta-analytic structural equation models: A
           Wishart-based approach

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract We present an approach to meta-analytic structural equation models that relies on hierarchical modeling of sample covariance matrices under the assumption that the matrices are Wishart. The approach handles the commonplace fixed- and random-effects meta-analytic SEMs, and solves the problem of dependent covariance matrices where more than one covariance matrix is obtained from a single study or study author. The ability of the approach to adequately recover parameters is examined via a simulation study. The approach is implemented in the bayesianmasem R package and a demonstration shows applications of the model.
