  • Review of The House We Live In: Virtue, Wisdom, and Pluralism.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Reviews the book, The House We Live In: Virtue, Wisdom, and Pluralism by Seth Zuiho Segall (2023). In this book, Segall launches into a deep dive of the many difficulties and conflicts America faces leading up to the critical and apocalyptic ones that we face today. Segall unpacks virtues and values leading to a discussion of practical wisdom that follows typically agreed-upon ethical principles. He ends the book with reflections on how an ethical renewal can address contemporary problems America faces in both domestic and foreign policy and how we can better confront challenges associated with social media, education, our current cultural divide, and cancel culture. • Correction to Toper et al. (2022).

Abstract: Reports an error in "The confluence of authenticity and mindfulness: Principal component analysis of the Authenticity Scale and the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire" by Aydan Toper, Edward Sellman and Stephen Joseph (The Humanistic Psychologist, Advanced Online Publication, Nov 10, 2022, np). The article is being made available open access under the CC-BY license following the University of Nottingham opt-in to the Jisc/ APA Read and Publish agreement. The correct copyright is “© 2022 The Author(s)” and the CC-BY license disclaimer is: “Open Access funding provided by the University of Nottingham: This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0). This license permits copying and redistributing the work in any medium or format, as well as adapting the material for any purpose, even commercially.” All versions of this article have been corrected. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2023-15956-001). The concepts of authenticity and mindfulness have recently attracted much empirical research. Although these concepts appear to represent different phenomena and are regarded as independent research foci with their own theoretical heritage and research trajectory, they also share considerable empirical convergence. This led us to speculate that measures of these two aspects of human experience, although using different language, are in fact measuring similar phenomena. To investigate their similarity, 530 participants completed the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (Baer et al., 2006) and the Authenticity Scale (Wood et al., 2008). Principal component analysis of the eight subscales from these two measures suggested two components that indicate the possibility of a useful confluence of these seemingly different lines of research inquiry. We suggest that there are specific ways in which a person who is authentic is also mindful and someone who is mindful is also authentic, but also the possibility that other ways of being mindful, such as observing (in the context of low levels of nonjudging), do not by themselves imply authenticity. • Historical foundations of existential-humanistic developmental psychology.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This article traces the early history of existential-humanistic developmental psychology. It is argued that this area of inquiry was built upon the pioneering work of a heterogeneous array of authors from numerous backgrounds, including American humanistic psychology, European existential and phenomenological psychology, social and self-styled psychoanalysis, personalistic psychology, comparative psychology, Gestalt psychology, education and pedagogy, philosophy, and anthropology. The conceptual yield of the historical overview was distilled down to a cluster of four broad themes: the whole developing person-in-context, lived time, the living body, and an enduring call to pedagogy. • Individualizing psychological assessment using the five-factor model: A
           phenomenological, enactivist approach.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this article, we discuss two distinct approaches to the study of lived experience that have non-reductionism at their basis: the human science approach to psychology and the enactive approach to cognitive science. Specifically, we articulate an emerging confluence of the individualized approach to psychological assessment—which stems from the human science tradition in psychology—and the Enactivist Big-5 Theory (EB5T) of personality—which is grounded in the enactivist tradition in cognitive science. In the theoretical portion of our article, we leverage our demonstration of the philosophical continuity between the human and cognitive sciences through their shared commitment to phenomenology by discussing core phenomenological concepts shared by both traditions. We then propose a phenomenological reformulation of individual differences in traits as reflecting differences in styles of world-enactment. In the clinical portion of our article, we demonstrate the clinical utility of our theoretical contribution through a vignette in which a patient’s lived struggles with anxiety were assessed phenomenologically and their styles of world-enactment thematized through an individualized application of EB5T’s phenomenological principles for understanding personality as lived experience. • A qualitative analysis of queer strengths.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Scholars have called for strengths-based approaches, particularly with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and nonbinary (LGBT/NB) clients to buffer against minority stress. Scholars have recommended that intake forms include questions about strengths. This study examined reported strengths from intake forms at a community clinic. A Consensual Qualitative Research–Modified (CQR-M) approach was used to analyze the strengths as reported by LGBT/NB clients. A total of 173 strengths from 64 individual participants were coded, yielding six domains: Connection, Interpersonal Skills, Abilities and Achievements, Role-Oriented, Self-Efficacy, and Resilience. We discuss clinical implications. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Psychiatric diagnosis as a political and social device: Epistemological
and historical insights on the role of collective emotions.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The overarching aim of this contribution is to show how there are many elements in the making of a psychiatric diagnosis that are not confined to the nature of the “disease”—a topic that would require another work in order to be properly clarified—but rather that are grounded in the historical context and social elements. The circular and mutual influences of these elements contribute to forge certain epistemological frameworks that legitimize the use of certain diagnostic categories. This essay is divided into three sections. In the first section, we highlight how the notion of psychiatric diagnosis needs to be considered in light of some specific epistemological assumptions that deal both with theoretical principles, never mentioned in the most used diagnostic manuals, and with power relations. In the second section, we analyze the role of collective emotions in the making of a diagnosis and particularly their political implications. In the third section, we provide a historical and epistemological analysis of the birth of Asperger’s syndrome, highlighting the role of collective emotions and their ideological impact on this diagnosis. • From the inside out: A life story narrative of one young man’s
           experience postapartheid, postprison.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Despite the supposed rehabilitative function of incarceration, individuals who spend time in prison are often viewed narrowly as ex-offenders. However, framed contextually, their stories can illuminate factors with far-reaching implications. The purpose of this critical narrative inquiry was to provide a shared first-person account of a Black man living in postapartheid South Africa. His told experience included stunted maturation because of early incarceration and overcoming stigmatization upon reentry into his community. Interconnected social systems including education, employment, and community infrastructure affect quality of life for generations. His story sheds light on structural and individual barriers and the resilience needed to navigate them. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • “Doing well by doing good”: When and how volunteering fosters hedonic
           and eudaimonic well-being.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Research has supported the hypothesis that volunteering enhances volunteers’ well-being. However, more clarity is needed regarding the link between volunteering and the various facets of well-being (i.e., hedonic vs eudaimonic) and the mechanisms that favor the increase of the various facets of well-being in volunteers. One hundred and seventy-five volunteers serving in various organizations were involved in the study. First, the results showed that the volunteers perceived that their satisfaction with life had significantly changed as a result of doing voluntary work. In addition, the results showed that the link between self-determined types of motivation and eudaimonic well-being is mediated by engagement. Engagement also mediated the positive effects of motivation on satisfaction with volunteering, which in turn acted as a second-order mediator on the relationship between self-determined types of motivation and hedonic well-being. Suggestions are given for promoting those organizational conditions that may favor self-determined types of motivation and engagement. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
