  • The role of place in intergroup conflicts and intragroup solidarity:
           Recent advances and perspectives.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: People tend to have strong psychological bonds with places such as neighborhoods, schools, towns, and countries. These people–place bonds can be of different nature (e.g., place ownership, place attachment), develop for different reasons (e.g., first arrival, length of stay), and generate different group dynamics in specific contexts. With this special issue, we sought to advance our understanding of the potential of people–place bonds to divide groups and instigate intergroup conflicts, as well as the potential to stimulate solidarity and cohesion within groups. We bring together ten empirical articles based on quantitative as well as qualitative research conducted in different parts of the world with both majority and minority ethnic groups. Taken together, these contributions highlight both the dark and the bright sides of our connection to places. Finally, we present suggestions for future avenues of research that may advance our knowledge about people–place bonds. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • White settler ownership and dominance shape the consequences of
autochthony beliefs on support for land reparations in South Africa.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Evidence suggests White settlers’ autochthony beliefs in historically colonized lands can both strengthen and weaken support for reparation measures. We propose that the divergent effect of autochthony beliefs on support for reparation measures is contingent on the perception of White settler ownership and preference for group-based hierarchies. In a single study with N = 807 White South Africans, we tested the moderation function of White settler ownership beliefs and preference for group-based hierarchies on the relationship between autochthony beliefs and support for land reparations. Results confirmed the hypothesis that endorsement of autochthony beliefs predicted stronger support for land reparation measures among respondents who perceived lower White settler ownership and preferred group-based equality. Our findings suggest that White settler ownership and social dominance orientation play a crucial role determining whether autochthony beliefs strengthen or weaken support for reparative measures in settler colonies. • Clarification notice to “The geography of military occupation and its
effect on Palestinian community cohesion, norms, and resistance
motivation” by Penić et al. (2023).

Abstract: Reports a clarification to "The Geography of Military Occupation and its Effect on Palestinian Community Cohesion, Norms, and Resistance Motivation" by Sandra Penić, Johanna Ray Vollhardt, Karsten Donnay, Mai Albzour and Ravi Bhavnani (Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology, Advanced Online Publication, Jun 22, 2023, np). The authors wish to clarify the relationship between “The Geography of Military Occupation and Its Effect on Palestinian Community Cohesion, Norms, and Resistance Motivation” by Penić, et al. (see record 2023-84165-001) and “How Does the Geography of Surveillance Affect Collective Action'” by Penić, et al. (see record 2024-09398-001). Both articles draw on data collected as part of the Pluralistic Memories Project, a large-scale project that brings together different research teams (see https://wp.unil.ch/pmp/), and both articles examine how the geography of military occupation shapes social fabric and collective action in Palestinian communities. Beyond these similarities, the articles address different theoretical questions and include different constructs and operationalizations of the studied psychological processes. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2023-84165-001.) In the context of military occupation, surveillance is a commonly used tactic to decrease resistance, effectively undermining an oppressed group’s sense of solidarity and cohesion. Our study examines how community cohesion—ties to local community—shapes the willingness to engage in nonviolent, civil resistance in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). We examine the psychological processes underpinning the link between community cohesion and civil resistance, and how these processes are affected by the geography of military occupation—the spatial system of Israeli settlements and surveillance infrastructure (checkpoints, the separation barrier, military installations). We address these questions by combining a representative survey of the adult population (N = 1,000) from 49 communities across the West Bank and Jerusalem with geo-coded data of settlements and the surveillance infrastructure. Our findings show that community cohesion predicts increased willingness to resist directly, and indirectly via perceived community norms of solidarity. Additionally, living in communities closer to settlements or the surveillance infrastructure predicts decreased community cohesion, lower expectations of solidarity with resistance, and less willingness to engage in resistance. Our findings contribute to the literature by demonstrating the role of community cohesion and norms in motivating resistance and depicting how these psychological processes are undermined by the structural conditions of control exercised by military occupation. • School as a contested territory for citizenship: An ethnographic study of
illegal occupation and protest processes at a popular vocational education
           school in the chilean october.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The sociopolitical crisis that flared up in Chile starting in October 2019 laid bare tensions in how different social groups understand citizenship and political mobilization. These tensions evinced clear generational differences coupled with the emergence of new forms of understanding and doing politics among youth. This article presents the results of an ethnographic study conducted at a vocational school in the marginalized suburbs of the Santiago metropolitan area, focused on analyzing how the practices and discourses that students deployed at the school challenge the definition of school and the citizen practices inside of it, and through these, make the school a public space. The results show that the situated response practices undertaken by the students served to contest and transform the school space, redefining the concept of citizenship, in the sense that student mobilization challenged the conceptualizations of citizenship prescribed by the curriculum, teachers, and the broader adult world. Accordingly, this article posits a reading of the school not only as an institution responsible for education and teaching but also as a place seen from the spatial perspective in a context of conflict, understanding that academic spaces are constantly produced via situated practices of appropriation, signification, and occupation, which are themselves not exempt from conflict. • When my neighborhood woke up: Knitting collective action in disadvantaged
areas amid the 2019 Chilean uprising.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: October 2019 saw the birth of the largest wave of demonstrations to hit Chile in the last 50 years. Protesters, the length of the country, soon joined in, voicing a broad range of demands and driving what has been described as a true “awakening” at the local level. This local dimension of the protests—that is, the events that took place at the neighborhood level—has been overlooked by recent studies of the conflicts that erupted in major cities across Chile and the nationwide demands that came with them. However, many socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods of Santiago became local epicenters of the uprising, witnessing not only intense protest action but also the peaceful congregation of inhabitants. The present work explores the fundamental role of space in the social and political identities of communities and asks how the social uprising developed at the neighborhood level, examining how it changed the relationship between these local spaces and their inhabitants. Based on the analysis of 19 in-depth interviews with young protestors from disadvantaged areas of Santiago, results reveal the emergence of a local “awakening.” This phenomenon involved encounters with others in public places, collective uses and resignification of local space, and the combination of national and local demands, arousing in young people territorial bonds and social identity. • Cultural invariance and ideological variance of collective ownership
           threat in intergroup relations.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We fear losing control over what we perceive to be ours. This fear is called the collective ownership threat (COT). According to the concept of COT, territorial infringements pose collective ownership threats, which are linked to adverse intergroup relations. Given the distinct features of ethnic homogeneity and collectivism, we examine whether COT can be applied to an East Asian context, Japan. Additionally, the reactive liberal model proposes that liberals are more prone than conservatives to feel threatened by the infringements of an out-group. Integrating COT and reactive liberal models, this study conducted an online experiment with Japanese adults. In the experiment, when the participants were shown an article about a territorial infringement by China, they felt COT and resisted Japan’s support of China’s policies. Furthermore, liberals were more inclined than conservatives to see the infringements as COT and therefore strongly resisted Japan’s support of China’s policies. These results indicate cultural invariance and ideological variance in COT. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Winning is owning: The role of perceived group superiority on territory
           ownership attributions.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Two preregistered experiments investigated the role of perceived group superiority in third-party territory ownership attributions (i.e., regarding a group as the possessor of a land) in intergroup contexts. Experiment 1 (N = 288) tested the effect of different versus same-time arrival to a territory on territory ownership attributions. The first-arriver group to a territory was more likely to be perceived as physically powerful, morally strong, and the owner of the territory than a newcomer (in within-subject comparisons) and a same-time arrival group (in between-subject comparisons), whereas a newcomer group was more likely to be perceived as more threatening than first-arriver (in within-subject comparisons) and same-time arrival (in between-subject comparisons) groups. Path analysis partially confirmed the proposed serial mediation model with perceptions of relative power, relative threat, and relative social distance as serial mediators of the association between arriving first at a territory and relative ownership attribution. Experiment 2 (N = 279) tested whether perceived group superiority affects ownership attributions. Physically (high wealth) and morally (high righteousness) superior groups as well as morally inferior groups (low righteousness) were more likely to be perceived as the owner of the territory than the groups who were physically and morally equivalent with other groups in the environment (control group). Implications of the present work for immigration attitudes and intergroup conflicts are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

  • A qualitative investigation into the emotional geographies of border
           politics in “postconflict” Cyprus.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 2020, border politics in Cyprus were brought into sharp focus. Since 2003, Cypriots have been able to cross the Green Line, which has separated Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots into the north and south of the island since 1974. However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the closure of the crossing points between the two communities in February 2020. This had a significant impact on mobility across the island. Furthermore, in October 2020, the partial opening of Varosha, a city abandoned following the Turkish intervention in 1974 resulted in protests across Cyprus. Both events demonstrate the fragility of peace on an island marked by violence. This article aims to investigate the emotional impact of living in a society marred by rising tensions over territory and restrictions on mobility. Whilst the political narratives and dynamics of the Cyprus problem tend to dominate, I use qualitative methodologies (interviews and site visits) to pay particular attention to the lived experiences of the everyday people on both sides of the Green Line who are affected by the division. Finally, through an emotional geography lens, I argue that the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent border closure and reopening of Varosha’s beachfront have brought forth feelings of frustration, betrayal, fear, and anxiety in terms of how people conceptualize division on the island. • Racial majority group’s support for racial equality in Malaysia.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: When and why does a racial majority group support racial equality' In answering this question, we focused on Malaysia, a multiracial country in which the Malay majority group’s special status as one of the country’s original inhabitants is institutionalized. Across Study 1 (N = 130) and Study 2 (N = 240), we examined the extent to which Malays’ endorsement of autochthony (an ideology of native ownership) is associated with perceived threat from racial minorities, support for racial equality policies, and support for a pro-Malay government. We further examined the moderating role of subjective socioeconomic status to explore heterogeneity within the Malay community. Both studies found that stronger beliefs in autochthony were associated with greater perceived threat from racial minorities and greater support for a pro-Malay government. Additionally, Study 1 (but not Study 2) found stronger beliefs in autochthony were associated with less support for racial equality policies. The role of subjective socioeconomic status was unclear. While Study 1 did not show any moderating effects, Study 2 found that stronger endorsement of autochthony was associated with lower support for racial equality policies amongst Malays from lower socioeconomic status. Taken together, these findings underscore the importance of considering the ideology of autochthony in understanding intergroup relations and the maintenance of the status quo. • Majority grievance in Germany: The role of entitlement beliefs and ingroup
           threat.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Group-based grievance has mainly been studied from the perspective of disadvantaged and minority groups. Following the refugee crisis and corresponding sociopolitical changes, there has also been an increase in perceived grievance among majority groups in many European countries. The present studies examined the role of perceived threat in the relationship between autochthony-based entitlement and group grievances among members of the German majority. Across three correlational studies, we tested whether threat moderates versus mediates this relationship. In Study 1, using a nationally representative sample, we found support for threat serving as a mediator of the relationship between autochthony-based entitlement and majority grievance. We replicated this finding in Studies 2 (N = 380) and 3 (N = 614) using convenience samples. We discuss the diverse roles played by perceived threat in predicting defensive reactions by majority groups and the importance of studying perceived entitlement in majority groups’ grievance claims. Abstract: Group-based land ownership claims remain a topic of debate in settler societies. While scholars have shown that group identification and territorial ownership perceptions influence intergroup relations between settlers and Indigenous peoples, it remains unclear how various forms of identity matter for ingroup and outgroup ownership perceptions. Furthermore, little is known on how ownership perceptions might explain attitudes toward both Indigenous people and new immigrants. The current research investigated how majority group’s identification with the ethnic (i.e., settler) group and their national identification differently relate to perceptions of settler and Indigenous ownership, and how these ownership perceptions, in turn, are associated with attitudes toward Indigenous peoples and immigrants. This was examined among a sample of European New Zealanders (Pākehā; N = 727) using structural equation modeling. It was found that higher settler identification was associated with greater perceived settler ownership, while higher national identification was associated with greater perceived Indigenous ownership. Furthermore, perceptions of settler ownership were related to less positive attitudes toward Indigenous Māori and immigrants. On the other hand, Indigenous ownership perceptions were related to more positive attitudes toward both groups. This study underscores the importance of considering both the majority group’s settler and national identification when trying to understand territorial ownership perceptions in settler societies. Moreover, it shows that in such a context, ownership concerns are relevant not only for attitudes toward Indigenous peoples but also new immigrants. • The geography of military occupation and its effect on Palestinian
community cohesion, norms, and resistance motivation.

Abstract: [Clarification Notice: A clarification for this article was reported in Vol 30(1) of Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology (see record 2024-73758-003). Beyond these similarities, the articles address different theoretical questions and include different constructs and operationalizations of the studied psychological processes.] In the context of military occupation, surveillance is a commonly used tactic to decrease resistance, effectively undermining an oppressed group’s sense of solidarity and cohesion.
