  • Disclosing Domestic Violence to Survivors’ Churches: Experiences of
           Survivors

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This article discusses the experiences of 12 survivors of domestic violence, 9 women and 3 men, regarding how their congregations responded and how that affected their views of God. These qualitative interviews were part of a larger mixed-methods study on domestic violence and the church that sought to provide further insight into the intersection of faith, domestic violence, and church response. Domestic violence occurs in religious families, just as it does in the general population. In these cases, the victims of abuse often first reach out to their pastors or clergy members for assistance. Using transcendental phenomenology, the authors sought to understand the survivors’ experiences in disclosing abuse to their faith communities. The findings show that despite numerous painful experiences with the church, the survivors’ faith and views of God largely stayed intact. Further domestic violence education, connection to resources, and attention to congregational policies and practices are vital in the faithful response to abuse.

  • Living in the Aftermath: Spiritual Struggles of Hong Kong Christian Women
           Survivors of Sexual Violence

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Spiritual trauma is one of the common outcomes for Christian women trauma survivors together with other psychological challenges (McNulty & Wardle in Child Abuse & Neglect, 18, 549–555, 1994; Rudolfsson & Tidefors in Pastoral Psychology, 64, 453–467, 2015; Yih in "Business as usual": Are Hong Kong faith communities supportive to Christian women with sexual harassment trauma' under review). Victims frequently experience much disappointment with the pastoral or congregational support they receive in the aftermath of their disclosure, which critically exacerbates their primary traumatic overwhelm and causes various faith-related challenges collectively known as spiritual struggle (Doyle in Sexual abuse in the Catholic clergy: A decade of crisis, 2002–2012 (pp. 171–182). Praegar, 2011). In this paper, I critically examine the spiritual aspect within the complex processes of Hong Kong Christian women survivors of sexual violence trauma recovering from the impacts caused by the responses of the victims’ faith communities using the qualitative research methodology of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The paper contributes to the growing efforts to develop an integrated and holistic provision of theologically robust and trauma-informed pastoral care for those struggling on the complex and challenging journey in the aftermath of trauma caused by sexual violence.

  • Personality Traits as Moderating Variables for Cross-Cultural Adjustment
           and Psychological Well-Being

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Personality traits are a significant predictor of cross-cultural adjustment. However, researchers have yet to establish this relationship among religious missionaries. This study used a cross-sectional design to explore whether personality traits are part of the repertoire of abilities religious missionaries need to enhance psychological well-being when adjusting to a new cultural context. A sample of 221 religious missionaries completed a standardized study in the Cubao Diocese in the Philippines. The study used a bootstrap corrected and accelerated regression to determine the moderating effect of personality traits on cross-cultural adjustment and psychological well-being. As predicted, the personality traits (HEXACO) have positive and negative moderation effects. Results showed the positive moderation effect of emotionality and the negative moderation effects of honesty-humility, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience between cross-cultural adjustment and psychological well-being at a 5% significance level.

  • Burnout, Trauma Impacts, and Well-Being Among Clergy and Chaplains: A
Systematic Review and Recommendations to Guide Best Practice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Religious leaders (i.e., clergy and chaplains) face unique, ongoing stressors that can increase risks for psychosocial and vocational vulnerabilities. Emerging evidence indicates concerning prevalence rates of distress and attrition among these professionals, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, most empirical work has focused on compromised functioning among religious leaders. Utilizing a more holistic approach, this systematic review explores individual, relational, and organizational factors associated with diverse outcomes. Following the PRISMA methodology, we identified 82 empirical articles investigating (a) risk and protective factors related to burnout, trauma impacts, spiritual distress, and other occupational hazards and/or (b) factors associated with well-being and flourishing, over and above distress reduction. We summarize the state of the available evidence, distinguishing between risk increasers, protective factors, and well-being enhancers. Attention is given to three domains: individual (e.g., demographics, personality factors, virtue development, coping and formation practices), relational (e.g., peer, family, and collegial supports; navigation of conflicts and polarized issues in one’s community of care), and institutional (e.g., role ambiguity or clarity, resource availability, systemic expectations and demands). We identify notable gaps to be addressed in future research; for example, most studies are cross-sectional, lack diversity in religion, gender, and geography, and operationalize well-being as the absence of symptoms rather than the presence of positive states and functioning. Considering the available evidence, we present best practices to guide psychological practitioners, denominational bodies, and others involved in religious leaders’ formation.

  • Eco-Remorse, Eco-Metanoia, and the Anthropocene

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The dire present and future realities of climate change have evoked diverse emotional responses (e.g., eco-anxiety, fear, guilt, despair). This article focuses on eco-remorse, which is distinct from eco-guilt. Relying principally on the work of Giorgio Agamben, it is argued that eco-remorse is a first and necessary step toward eco-metanoia. This sets the stage for a discussion of the attributes of eco-metanoia—namely, acts of care that entail the (1) recognition and respect for the singularities of other species, (2) subordination of instrumental epistemologies to personal epistemologies, and (3) inclusion of other species in justice discourses and in political deliberations.

  • Betwixt and Between: Playing with Liminality and the Liminoid in Before
Your Eyes, a Transformative Video Game on the Transience of Life

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Aesthetic experiences can serve as powerful catalysts for emotional, psychological, and spiritual transformation. More recently, video games have drawn attention as an artistic medium in their own right, capable of inspiring profound transformation in ways similar to conventional art forms. Video games, like other artistic media, can be seen as thresholds to transformative aesthetic experiences, rendering them especially suitable for analysis through the lens of Victor Turner’s work on liminality and the liminoid. This article employs these concepts as a framework to assess video games as liminoid structures in which players can engage with simulated liminal experiences and undergo transformative aesthetic experiences through ritual-like, interactive play. In particular, it integrates concepts from games studies to explore how video games have uniquely liminoid characteristics that distinguish them from other liminoid entities, including art and leisure activities. As a case study, this article also explores manifestations of liminality and the liminoid in the setting, narrative, and gameplay of indie video game Before Your Eyes. It examines how these elements act synergistically to provide a nuanced, intimate depiction of terminal illness, coming of age, and existential judgment in the afterlife, encouraging players to surrender themselves to the emotional world portrayed within the game and become transformed in the process.

  • Wounded Advocates: How Surviving Spiritual Abuse Can Help Survivors See
           the Suffering of Others

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Spiritual abuse can be detrimental to victims’ emotional and mental well-being as well as their spirituality and religious faith. Little research exists regarding the experiences of ministers who have experienced spiritual abuse. This study investigated the correlation between experiencing spiritual abuse and the ability to recognize spiritual abuse in a sample of Southern Baptist Convention ministers. Results indicated that the likelihood of recognizing spiritual abuse correlated with higher scores on the spiritual abuse survey.

  • Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Religious Commitment and Religious Music
Support and Their Role as Predictors of Self-Esteem Among Latinos: An
Investigation Using the Religiosity, Spirituality, and Health amongst
           Latinos Survey

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Research has shown that both religious music support (RMS) and religious commitment (RC) have a positive effect on health among older adults. Although their factor structure has been studied among Whites and African Americans, research has been limited among Latinos. Moreover, their role as predictors of self-esteem has also been limited. Thus, our study’s objective was to examine the factor structure of these constructs and to determine whether they are predictors of self-esteem using items from the Religiosity, Spirituality, and Health amongst Latinos Survey (RSHLS). The RSHLS assessed 498 Latino adults in the United States who identified as Christian. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted as well as modification of indices. Also, a chi-squared test and global fit indices of the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) and comparative fit (CFI) were also analyzed. In addition, a full structural equation model was used to explore the relationship between RMS and RC as predictors of self-esteem while controlling for age and annual household income. All analyses used STATA 17. Results of this study showed that the factor structure of RMS and RC matched other demographic groups in the literature and that RC (b = 0.305, p < 0.05) was a significant predictor of self-esteem while controlling for age and annual household income. Moreover, global fit indices of RMSEA (0.039 < 0.05) and CFI (0.989 > 0.95) showed the model was a good fit. Overall, this, study found that the factor structure of RMS and RC among Latinos matched other demographic groups and that RC was a significant predictor of self-esteem while controlling for age and annual household income.

  • Use of the MMPI-3 with Catholic and Episcopal Seminary and Religious Life
           Applicants

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Psychological evaluations and testing using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) among other instruments have been used to screen clerical and religious life applicants for decades. While much research has been conducted and published regarding these evaluations, the newer MMPI-3 has not been examined among this population. This study reviewed MMPI-3 results from 18 applicants to seminary and religious life from the Roman Catholic and Episcopal faith traditions to determine if the participants are generally psychological healthy and if they have any consistent elevations in their MMPI-3 testing scores. Additionally, we examined MMPI-3 differences among Catholics versus Episcopal applicants. Our preliminary results using a small sample suggest that applicants to seminary and religious life are generally psychologically healthy but tend to be defensive, presenting themselves in a favorable and virtuous manner. Additionally, Catholics tend to score higher on inconsistent responses but lower on psychoticism than Episcopalians. Further research should use larger and more diverse sample sizes to better understand how the MMPI-3 performs among this population.

  • Church Dreams in a Long Dream Series of a Benedictine Nun

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Dreaming plays a part in many of the world’s religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism Christianity, and Islam. However, research into what the actual dreams of religious persons look like is very rare. Within a series of 2,055 dreams recorded over more than 30 years by a Benedictine nun, the frequency and content of church dreams were analyzed. The church dream frequency (11%) was high compared to other samples. The findings indicate that the daily religious practices of the dreamer as a nun is reflected in her dreams, with the most frequent church being “her” church and the most frequent activity related to the church being religious (praying, singing, a church service). Interestingly, the nun’s dreams also included profound religious dreams of inner liberation, insights, and positive feelings. It would be interesting to study the beneficial effects of dreams in other persons who have dedicated their lives to religious practice, whether within Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, or any other faith.

  • The Anthropocene Age Reveals the Insanity at the Heart of Western
           Christian Religious Experience

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This article claims that the Anthropocene Age reveals the tragic insanity that lies at the core of religious experiences informed by Hebrew and Christian scriptures. In brief, I claim that Western Christianity and its apparatuses produce beliefs, which are an integral part of persons’ religious experiences, that give rise to an ontological rift between human beings and other species. This rift and its attendant beliefs are evident in how religious individuals and communities have (1) overlooked or disavowed the singularities and sufferings of other species, (2) used attendant instrumental epistemologies to justify the exploitation of Othered species (and Othered human beings) and the Earth, and (3) sought to force nature to adapt to human needs and desires. The article addresses the psychological dynamics and consequences of the ontological rift, which further exposes the madness that attends religious experiences that rely on apparatuses of the ontological rift. The article ends with a brief discussion of an antidote, namely, inoperativity.

  • Stepping Onto an Egg: Former Child Soldiers’ Posttraumatic Resilience
           and Spirit Possession in Uganda

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Using a biographical-reconstructive approach, we examine the interplay between the symbolic representation of spirit possession and healing forms of ritual purification in the context of the war-related trauma of former Lord’s Resistance Army child soldiers in Uganda. We illustrate how these former child soldiers articulate their trauma and resilience and how their communities deal with forms of spirit possession, what the role of religious communities is, and how rituals function as a coping mechanism for war-related trauma. The narrative approach is used to analyze 12 digital reports of different nongovernmental organizations and five digital testimonies of former child soldiers. The results provide relevant knowledge for a successful reintegration of returnees into society.

  • Religion and Cognitive Safety: Pastoral and Psychological Implications

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract A scholarly discourse exists among researchers regarding whether religiosity primarily represents credulity or the capacity for critical thinking. Numerous studies within the realm of psychology, for instance, delve into this inquiry within the framework of risk assessment among both religious adherents and nonbelievers. Nevertheless, there is a notable lack of comprehensive exploration encompassing theological, philosophical, and social safety science perspectives that encapsulate the entirety of religious phenomena. This paper seeks to address this gap by examining various forms of religious thought and activities that contribute to cognitive safety. The analysis scrutinizes the development of such cognitive attitudes and elucidates the manifestation of religiosity in the context of well-being, ultimately informing pastoral programs.

  • The Role of Religious Belief in COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract With the global outbreak of COVID-19, it is important that vaccination be emphasized to build herd immunity. However, vaccine hesitancy is negatively associated. Religious views impact the interpretations and acceptance of medical and scientific evidence, leading to a variety of responses to vaccination, such as vaccine hesitancy. The aim of this study was to delve into the reluctance of religious individuals towards vaccines, particularly towards COVID-19. An integrative review was conducted using PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases to find articles from 2020 to 2023. Twenty articles were selected for review. The review found that religiosity is negatively associated with COVID-19 vaccine uptake across different religious groups. The article proposes a theoretical way to mitigate religious influence on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.

  • The Body of “the Body of Christ”: An Introduction to Hyperscanning
Research and a Discussion of Its Possible Implications for Understanding
           Social Experiences During Religious Gatherings

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Neuroscience has become a well-accepted methodological modality in the study of religion, especially of religious behavior, personal prayer, meditation, mysticism, spiritual experience, and personal religious experiences. However, such studies have been performed on individuals only; none have helped scholars understand the neuro-physiological correlates of religious communities, religious interactions, collective liturgical action, or the like. This article introduces the new field of social neuroscience, showing how its primary tool, hyperscanning, is revealing surprising levels of “brain-to-brain synchrony.” Though there are no hyperscanning studies of religious communities yet, the authors suggest that findings about shared attention, interpersonal coordination, and feelings of closeness all have clear parallels in and implications for religious communities. The authors then suggest both directions and cautions for future research.

  • The Effect of Taizé Prayer on Stress and Stress Resilience of Young
           Adults in Nonclinical Settings

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Stress resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress. Religious vocal chanting has been known to have a positive effect on stress. This study explored the impact of Taizé prayer as a religious vocal chanting on stress reduction and stress resilience improvement. A nonrandomized controlled trial was conducted. Thirty-six Christian university students in Indonesia were recruited and included in the intervention and control groups without randomization. Subjects in the intervention group performed 30-min Taizé prayer for 28 days. The stress level was examined using the Perceived Stress Scale, and stress resilience was examined using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-25. Differences within groups were analyzed using a paired t-test, while differences between groups were analyzed using an independent t-test. The intervention group showed a significant improvement in stress resilience (p < 0.01), while the control group did not experience any change (p = 0.80). Further, the stress scores decreased in the intervention group (p = 0.03), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (p = 0.22). Changes in stress resilience were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (p = 0.01), while changes in stress scores did not differ significantly between the two groups (p = 0.33). Taizé prayer might have positive effects on stress and stress resilience in young adulthood.

  • Longing for Humanity: The Process of Leaving a Context of Perceived
           Spiritual Abuse

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study provides an account of leaving a context of perceived spiritual abuse within some Pentecostal fellowships in Norway. We discuss how our 16 informants discovered the need for change and sought support to navigate challenging departure processes characterized by emotional strain. Three empirical themes emerged: (1) God’s will, as conveyed by leaders, evoked shame, (2) there were various sources of help in leaving a context of perceived spiritual abuse, and (3) the acknowledgment of vulnerability provided space for new images of God. Throughout the leaving process, many informants underwent a profound shift in their perceptions of God, marked by a heightened awareness of their vulnerability. This transformation encompassed a deep-seated desire to embrace their humanity and to accept the relevance of their thoughts and feelings. Acknowledging their own vulnerability allowed them to have more humanized images of God. Our analysis employs Kenneth Pargament’s notion of orienting systems and his theory of religious coping to elucidate how their images of God changed. The process led to a perceived sense of freedom from spiritual abuse. We understand the informants’ experiences of leaving the church and affiliated organizations as instances of deconversion through what empirically emerged as “deprogramming” processes in our material. Deprogramming involves disentangling individuals from what they perceived was conveyed and thus “programmed” by spiritual leaders. Deprogramming processes emerged as a new exploration of images of God, shame, power, and human vulnerability.

  • The Devil Is in the Details: How Clergy Tasks Became Stressors During
           COVID-19

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract COVID-19 presented a difficult environment for care workers, including clergy, as they sought to address human needs within an often-contentious culture. Unique tasks heightened counseling responsibilities, and management of strained relationships introduced new or enhanced stressors into their jobs. Care worker stressors can lead to compassion fatigue. This study aimed to examine clergy’s unique tasks and stressors during COVID-19 to ascertain causal paths toward compassion fatigue. The results of the structural equation analysis demonstrated role and occupational stressors fully mediated the path from tasks to compassion fatigue. The indication was that it was not administrative tasks (e.g., accommodating health measures, adapting the delivery of ministry) nor care tasks (e.g., providing support and counseling to family and patients of COVID-19 victims) that directly caused compassion fatigue; rather, it was the criticism, conflict, and relationship stressors encountered during the ministry that led to compassion fatigue. Implications and recommendations for clergy and administrative development to mitigate and manage role stress and clergy occupational distress are presented. Overall, the study provides insight into the mechanisms by which clergy job demands during COVID-19 led to compassion fatigue, pointing to stressors as the key mediating factors.
