The northward expansion and some biological characteristics of
Mediterranean spearfish, Tetrapturus belone Rafinesque, 1810, in the
Aegean Sea, Türkiye

  Abstract: The Mediterranean spearfish, Tetrapturus belone is one of the top pelagic migratory predator and well-known around Tyrrhenian Sea. Due to the limited knowledge on its biology, ecology and distribution, each data related T.belone arouses curiosity. In the present study, two individuals were accidentally caught by commercial longlines and trammel nets in the Babakale coast and Mavra Island, North Aegean Sea, Turkiye. The lower jaw total length and weight of the 1st individual was determined as 1.7 meters and 30 kilograms, respectively. The morphometric and meristic characteristics, sex, maturity stage, and stomach content of 2nd individual was recorded. The individual measured as 1.55 meters in length, 13.15 kilograms in weight. The sex was determined as female and the gonad was detected as a developing stage. Garfish, Belone belone individuals of various sizes were detected as prey.

Scotina celans (Blackwall, 1841), a new record for the spider fauna of
Türkiye (Araneae, Liocranidae)

The length-weight relationships of 19 fish species in gillnets used for
caught Mediterranean horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner
1868)

  Abstract: The length–weight relationships are commonly used in fisheries management and fisheries biology studies. The present study is aim to examine the length-weight relationships of 19 fish species in gillnets used for caught Mediterranean horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner 1868) in the Marmara Sea. The length-weight relationships of Alosa immaculata, Boops boops, Chromis chromis, Serranus scriba, Sympodus mediterraneus were detected for the first time in the Marmara Sea. The length (TL)-weight (TW) relationships for A.immaculata, B.boops, C.chromis, S.scriba, S.mediterraneus were calculated as TW=0.014TL2.7902 (R2=0.76),TW=0.0093TL3.0662 (R2=0.96), TW=0.8058TL1.3392 (R2=0.80), TW=0.0167TL2.9273 (R2=0.88) and TW=0.0064TL3.4007 (R2=0.91), respectively. As a result, various fishing pressures, environmental disasters and hydrobiological effects necessitate the continuous monitoring of population characteristics, such as the lenght-weight relationships of species living in the Sea of Marmara.

New record of Bathytormus acuminatus (Kobelt, 1885) from India (Mollusca,
Bivalvia, Crassatellidae)

  Abstract: Bathytormus acuminatus, was first described by Kobelt in 1885 from Singapore and never been reported after the original description. However, during the previous survey conducted by the scientist of the Zoological Survey of India, B. acuminatus was collected from 30 m off Gangavaram coast of Andhra Pradesh coastal water, India. The current study provides updates on the distribution and nomenclature of B. acuminatus in Indian Ocean waters.

Biological Assessment of Common Eagle Ray, Myliobatis aquila (Linnaeus,
1758) from the Northeastern Mediterranean (Saros Bay), Turkey

  Abstract: In this research, total length-frequency distribution, length-weight relationships, sex ratios, age, growth, reproduction and feeding habits of the common eagle ray (Myliobatis aqulia) were investigated using 85 specimens from the Northern Aegean Sea. Females made up 48.2% and males 51.8% of the total individuals studied. The F:M sex ratio was determined as 1:1.07. The total length of females and males ranged between 30.7 and 121 cm (Disc width: 21.7 cm-100 cm), and between 29.5 cm and 100 cm (Disc width: 21.5 cm-56.1 cm) respectively. The total length (TL)-total weight (TW) and disc width (DW)-total weight (TW) relationships were described by the equations; TW=0.0012TL3.20, r2=0.87 and TW=0.0081DW3.17, r2=0.98, respectively. Age data derived from vertebrae readings were used to estimate the growth parameters of von Bertalanffy equation: L∞=138.59 cm, K=0.90 y-1, t0=-0.09 y for males and L∞=164.08 cm, K=0.95 y-1, t0=-0.08 y for females. The maximum age were 10 for males and 16 females. Using gonadosomatic index and gonadal macroscopic observation, the spawning period was lasted throughout the year. Stomach content analysis showed the most-preferred prey to be mollusca (47.86% IRI) and teleostei (14.02% IRI).

A new record of metalmark moth from Türkiye: Choreutis sexfasciella
(Sauber, 1902) (Choreutidae: Lepidoptera)

  Abstract: This is the first record for Türkiye of the widespread Indo-Australian metalmark moth, Choreutis sexfasciella (Sauber, 1902) (Choreutidae: Lepidoptera). The presence of several specimens of C. sexfasciella was photographed in the Turkish province of Mersin in the Mediterranean Region in June, 2024.
