Updating the distribution of the genus Isoetes (Isoetaceae) in southern
Spain (Córdoba, Andalusia)
- Abstract: ABSTRACT Isoetes belong to the Class Lycopodiopsida (lycophytes). The genus is generally underrepresented in collections due to a lack of diagnostic characteristics and inconspicuous appearance. The current distribution of Isoetes within Córdoba province is provided in a 1 km2 grid from several sources: (i) herbaria sheets from COA, COFC, MGC, SEV, GDA, and GDAC, (ii) 107 new observations since 2012, and (iii) records from literature and databases. Nine herbaria sheets were correctly determined. The most frequent species was I. histrix, well represented in the northern half of the province. Isoetes durieui, I. longíssima, and I. delilei were much less common. The present work aims to update the current distribution of this genus in Córdoba province (Spain), in which several species are classified as threatened.RESUMEN El género Isoetes pertenece a la clase Lycopodiopsida (Licófitos). El genero está generalmente poco representado en colecciones debido a la falta de caracteres diagnósticos y a ser poco conspicuo. La distribución actual de las especies del género Isoetes en la provincia de Córdoba se proporciona en una resolución de 1 km2 a partir de varias fuentes: (i) pliegos de los herbarios COA, COFC, MGC, SEV, GDA y GDAC; (ii) 107 nuevas observaciones llevadas a cabo desde el año 2012, y (iii) consulta de publicaciones y bases de datos. Nueve pliegos de herbario han sido correctamente identificados. La especie más frecuente es I. histrix, que se presupone bien representada en la mitad norte de la provincia. Isoetes durieui, I. longissima e I. delilei, son menos comunes. Con el presente trabajo se actualiza la distribución de este género en la provincia de Córdoba (España), donde algunas de sus especies están catalogadas como amenazadas.
Floristic inventory in andean forest areas of the Central Cordillera of
Colombia (El Peñol, Antioquia)
- Abstract: RESUMEN Los ecosistemas andinos constituyen uno de los más importantes centros de biodiversidad del mundo, sin embargo, sus coberturas boscosas tienden a desaparecer rápidamente debido a que están sometidas a una fuerte presión antrópica. En este estudio, se caracterizan las angiospermas presentes en los parches de bosque, sus bordes y en zonas de vegetación abierta o potrero de un área andina de la Cordillera Central de Colombia. Entre marzo de 2017 y febrero de 2018 se realizaron recolecciones de material fértil mediante recorridos del área. Se obtuvo información complementaria de colecciones históricas depositadas en herbarios. El material herborizado se depositó en el Herbario Nacional Colombiano (COL). Se registran 431 especies, agrupadas en 92 familias y 239 géneros, se encontraron cinco familias de magnólidas con siete géneros y 29 especies, 18 de monocotiledóneas (66/131) y 69 eudicotiledóneas (166/271). La mayor riqueza a nivel de especies la presentan Orchidaceae (54), Rubiaceae (24), Asteraceae (22), Araceae (22) y Piperaceae (20). Las hierbas terrestres son la forma de vida más numerosa (31,8 %), seguidas por arbustos (26,5 %) y árboles (17,6 %). A pesar de tratarse de áreas rodeadas por actividades productivas, principalmente agropecuarias, se encontraron 30 especies endémicas de Colombia, 170 taxones representan nuevos registros para la vertiente oriental de la Cordillera Central del departamento de Antioquia, dos nuevos registros para el departamento y cuatro nuevas especies.ABSTRACT The Andean ecosystems constitute one of the most important centers of biodiversity in the world; however, their forest covers tend to disappear rapidly as they are subjected to strong anthropic pressure. In this study, the angiosperms present in the forest patches, its edge, and in areas of open vegetation or pasture of an Andean area of the Central Cordillera of Colombia are characterized. General collections of fertile material were made through tours between March 2017 and February 2018. Complementary information was obtained from historic collections deposited in herbaria and the botanical material was deposited in the Herbario Nacional Colombiano (COL). A total of 431 species are recorded, grouped into 92 families and 239 genera, five families of magnolids were found with seven genera and 29 species, 18 monocotyledons (66/131) and 69 eudicotyledons (166/271). The highest species richness is presented by Orchidaceae (54), Rubiaceae (24), Asteraceae (22), Araceae (22), and Piperaceae (20). Terrestrial herbs is the most numerous life form (31.8 %), followed by shrubs (26.5 %) and trees (17.6 %). Despite being areas surrounded by productive activities, mainly agricultural, 30 species are endemic to Colombia, 170 taxa are new records for the eastern slope of the Central mountain range of the department of Antioquia, two are new records for the department, and four new species are reported.
Checklist of Angiosperms of a Cerrado Environmental Protection Area in the
State of Maranhão, Brazil: floristic composition and new occurrences
- Abstract: ABSTRACT This study presents an updated checklist of angiosperms from the Inhamum Municipal Environmental Protection Area (IMEPA), municipality of Caxias, a strategic area for understanding the Cerrado flora in the State of Maranhão, Brazil. The data presented provides information on the most representative taxa, number of collections, physiognomies of occurrence, life forms, endemicity to Brazil, new records for the State and a floristic similarity analysis with other Cerrado areas in this State. A total of 16 field excursions were carried out from January 2018 to June 2019, with random collections of fertile specimens made mostly on trails. We found 228 species of angiosperms distributed in 148 genera and 50 families. The most representative family was Leguminosae, with 54 species and 33 genera. Cyperus (Cyperaceae) was the most representative genus with seven species. A total of 40 species are endemic to Brazil, and ten are new occurrences for the State of Maranhão. The similarity analysis showed that the composition of angiosperm species from IMEPA is closer to that from the Buriti do Meio Environmental Protection Area, another conservation unit located in the same mesoregion within the State of Maranhão. Nonetheless, low similarity values were recorded, demonstrating an exclusive local richness in the analyzed areas. This study contributed to the knowledge of the Cerrado flora from the State of Maranhão, filling in the Cerrado diversity gaps in Northern Brazil.RESUMEN Este estudio presenta una lista actualizada de angiospermas del Área de Protección Ambiental Municipal de Inhamum (APAMI), municipio de Caxias, un área estratégica para el conocimiento de la flora del Cerrado en el Estado de Maranhão, Brasil. Los datos presentados brindan información sobre los taxones más representativos, número de colecciones, fisonomías de ocurrencia, formas de vida, ende-micidad a Brasil, nuevos registros para el Estado y un análisis de similitud florística con otras áreas del Cerrado en este Estado. Se realizaron un total de 16 excursiones de campo desde enero 2018 hasta junio 2019, con recolecciones aleatorias de especímenes fértiles realizadas principalmente en senderos. Encontramos 228 especies de angiospermas distribuidas en 148 géneros y 50 familias. La familia más representativa fue Leguminosae, con 54 especies y 33 géneros. Cyperus (Cyperaceae) fue el género más representativo con siete especies. En total 40 especies son endémicas de Brasil y diez nuevos registros para el estado de Maranhão. El análisis de similitud mostró que la composición de las especies de an-giospermas de IMEPA es más cercana a la de la EPA de Buriti do Meio, otra unidad de conservación ubicada en la misma mesorregión dentro del Estado de Maranhão. No obstante, se registraron valores de similitud bajos, lo que demuestra una riqueza local exclusiva en las áreas analizadas. Este estudio contribuye al conocimiento de la flora del Cerrado del estado de Maranhão, llenando los vacíos de diversidad del Cerrado en el Noreste de Brasil.
Copacabana is more than a beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: the orchid
flora of Parque Estadual da Chacrinha
- Abstract: ABSTRACT Orchidaceae is the most diverse botanical family in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 79 genera and 250 species. Vegetation in Rio de Janeiro is mostly restricted to small fragments of Atlantic Forest, many of which are located within conservation units and act as refuges for flora. Some of the best-known postcards of the city, such as Corcovado and Sugar Loaf mountains, and the Christ the Redeemer statue, are located within urban conservation units. This work presents the results of a floristic-taxonomic study of Orchidaceae in the Parque Estadual da Chacrinha (PE Chacrinha), a state park located extremely near the famous Copacabana beach in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Brief morphological descriptions of the species are provided and an identification key for the orchids of PE Chacrinha is presented, based mainly on vegetative morphological characters. Orchidaceae of PE Chacrinha is represented by thirteen genera and 16 species, most of which restricted to Brazil, seven of them are also endemic to the Atlantic Forest, or South America and occur as terricolous or rupicolous. We highlighted the occurrences of Acianthera limae, Epidendrum ammophilum and Prescottia spiranthophylla, species that grow exclusively or predominantly on rocky outcrops. With these findings, our goal is to raise awareness among the local population about the importance of conserving the regional flora; stimulate visits to PE Chacrinha and promote the inclusion of this conservation unit in the tourist itinerary of the city of Rio de Janeiro.RESUMEN Orchidaceae es la familia botánica más diversa en la ciudad de Río de Janeiro, Brasil, con 79 géneros y 250 especies. La vegetación en Río de Janeiro se limita principalmente a pequeños fragmentos de Mata Atlántica, muchos de los cuales se localizan dentro de unidades de conservación y actúan como refugios para la flora. Algunas de las postales más conocidas de la ciudad, como las montañas Corcovado y Pan de Azúcar, y la estatua del Cristo Redentor, se encuentran dentro de unidades de conservación urbanas. Este trabajo presenta los resultados del estudio florístico-taxonómico de Orchidaceae en el Parque Estadual da Chacrinha (PE Chacrinha), un parque estatal ubicado muy cerca de la famosa playa de Copacabana en el corazón de Río de Janeiro. Se proporcionan breves descripciones morfológicas de las especies y una clave de identificación para las Orchidaceae del PE Chacrinha, basadas principalmente en caracteres morfológicos vegetativos. La familia Orchidaceae del PE Chacrinha está representada por trece géneros y 16 especies, la mayoría de las cuales están restringidas a Brasil, siete de ellas son también endémicas de la Mata Atlántica, o Sudamérica y crecen como terrestres o rupícolas. Destacamos la presencia de Acianthera limae, Epidendrum ammophilum y Prescottia spiranthophylla, especies que habitan exclusiva o predominantemente en afloramientos rocosos. Con estos hallazgos, nuestro objetivo es crear conciencia entre la población local sobre la importancia de conservar la flora regional; estimular visitas al PE Chacrinha; y promover la inclusión de esta unidad de conservación en el itinerario turístico de Río de Janeiro.
Priorities for conservation of freshwater fishes in the Andean Orinoco
region in Colombia
- Abstract: RESUMEN La Orinoquia andina en Colombia ha sido muy afectada por la intervención antrópica. Aunque se han realizado ejercicios de priorización de áreas importantes para la conservación que han incluido a los peces de agua dulce, estos sólo han tenido en cuenta variables como la riqueza, endemismos y estatus de amenaza, que resultan insuficientes para representar la variabilidad geográfica y los patrones de distribución de las especies. En este trabajo, se propone una priorización para la conservación de los peces en la Orinoquia andina a partir de tres enfoques: identificación de áreas de endemismo, riesgo y complementariedad. Los tres enfoques coinciden en la priorización de la subcuenca del río Ariari como la más importante para la conservación de los peces, seguida por la subcuenca del río Guamal, abarcando en conjunto el 72,35 % de la ictiofauna de la Orinoquia Andina. Aunque el 47,07 % del área de estudio pertenece a algún tipo de área protegida, solo el 0,97 % de los registros de peces provienen de áreas protegidas nacionales y el 14,8 % de áreas regionales, resaltando el bajo conocimiento de la diversidad de peces en estas áreas. Se exhorta a las autoridades ambientales, institutos de investigación y universidades, a realizar investigación básica en las áreas protegidas, que permitan conocer su riqueza y analizar su efectividad para conservar la ictiofauna.ABSTRACT The Andean Orinoco basin in Colombia has been strongly affected by the anthropic impact. Although prioritization efforts have been done in important areas for conservation that have included freshwater fish, they have only considered richness, endemism, and threat status which are insufficient to represent the geographical variability and the distribution patterns of species. In this work, prioritization for the conservation of fishes in the Andean Orinoco is proposed based on three approaches: identification of areas of endemism, risk, and complementarity. The three approaches coincide in the prioritization of the Ariari river sub-basin as the most important for fish conservation, followed by the Guamal River sub-basin, together encompassing 72.35 % of the Andean Orinoco ichthyofauna. Although 47.07% of the study area belongs to some type of protected area, only 0.97 % of the fish records come from national protected areas and 14.8 % from regional areas, highlighting the low knowledge of the freshwater fish diversity in these areas. Environmental authorities, research institutes, and universities are urged to carry out basic research in the protected areas that allow to know its richness and to analyze its effectiveness to conserve ichthyofauna.
Divergence on the reproductive strategy of two sympatric species of
Anthurium (Araceae) in a tropical andean forest
- Abstract: RESUMEN Se evaluó la divergencia en la estrategia reproductiva de Anthurium panduriforme y Anthurium caucanum con base en la fenología reproductiva, los patrones de inversión en reproducción individual y poblacional y el éxito reproductivo femenino, a lo largo de un intervalo de elevación entre 2200 y 2900 m ubicado en un bosque Andino tropical de Antioquia, Colombia. Debido a que ambas especies pertenecen al mismo género, con inflorescencias semejantes en estructura, es posible que presenten competencia por polinizadores. Al mismo tiempo, se espera una disminución en el éxito reproductivo con un incremento de la elevación, debido a que la abundancia de insectos visitantes florales disminuye con la elevación. Los individuos reproductivos de ambas especies fueron monitoreados en siete elevaciones durante un año. Los resultados indican estrategias reproductivas contrastantes: picos de floración en diferentes momentos del año y un mayor número de inflorescencias, infrutescencias y éxito reproductivo en A. caucanum comparado con A. panduriforme. La producción de inflorescencias y el éxito reproductivo en A. panduriforme no varió significativamente con la elevación, mientras que en A. caucanum disminuyó. Los ensamblajes de visitantes florales difirieron en composición entre especies y su abundancia fue significativamente mayor en A. panduriforme. Las estrategias reproductivas contrastantes, en estas especies que coexisten, podrían reducir la competencia por polinizadores, promover la producción de semillas y el aislamiento reproductivo. Esto es esencial para el mantenimiento de la biodiversidad de plantas al tiempo que les permite coexistir sintópicamente.ABSTRACT The divergence in the reproductive strategy of Anthurium panduriforme and Anthurium caucanum was evaluated based on reproductive phenology, investment patterns in individual and population reproduction, and female reproductive success, along an elevation range between 2200 and 2900 m located in a tropical Andean forest of Antioquia, Colombia. Because both species belong to the same genus, with similar inflorescences in structure, it is possible that they present competition for pollinators. Also, a decrease in reproductive success is expected with an increase in elevation, due to the decrease of abundance of floral visiting insects with elevation. The reproductive individuals of both species were monitored at seven different elevations for one year. The two species studied showed contrasting reproductive strategies: flowering peaks at different times of the year and a greater number of inflorescences, infructescences, and reproductive success for A. caucanum compared to A. panduriforme. Inflorescence production and reproductive success for A. panduriforme did not vary significantly along elevation, whereas it decreased for A. caucanum. The floral visitor assemblages differed in composition between species and their abundance in A. panduriforme was significantly higher. The two species studied exhibit contrasting reproductive strategies, which could reduce competition for pollinators, promote seed production and reproductive isolation. This is essential for the maintenance of plant biodiversity while allowing them to coexist syntopically.
Spatio-temporal distribution of eight species of herons (Ardeidae) during
the breeding season in Isla Pajaros, Oaxaca-Chiapas, Mexico
- Abstract: RESUMEN Las garzas que se reproducen en colonias presentan requerimientos ecológicos similares e intensifican sus relaciones interespecíficas. Sin embargo, estas especies pueden coexistir al segregarse temporal y espacialmente. Se estimó el número de nidos de ocho especies de garzas (Ardea alba, Egretta thula, E. caerulea, E. tricolor, E. rufescens, Bubulcus ibis, Nycticorax nycticorax y Cochlearius cochlearius) durante la temporada reproductiva marzo a agosto de 2018 en Isla Pájaros, Laguna Mar Muerto, Oaxaca-Chiapas, México. Así mismo, se estimaron las abundancias de las parejas reproductoras, el patrón temporal y espacial de reproducción por especie, y se describió el sitio de anidación. Se contaron nidos en 96 parcelas y se midieron ocho variables ambientales. Se registraron 1018 nidos, donde B. ibis presentó el mayor número de parejas reproductoras (299), seguida por E. tricolor (213) y E. thula (142). Las especies menos abundantes fueron C. cochlearius (35) y E. caerulea (33). La distribución de los nidos en la isla varió espacial y temporalmente entre parcelas al igual que la composición de especies y la abundancia de nidos por parcela (P < 0,001). Se registró una distribución vertical en la construcción de los nidos de al menos tres especies, mientras que las cuatro garcitas de similar tamaño (E. thula, E. caerulea, E. tricolor y B. ibis) anidaron juntas en las partes intermedias. Se registraron agrupaciones entre las especies y características de la vegetación. Los patrones de distribución espacial y temporal de estas especies permiten entender el uso de un recurso común durante la reproducción.ABSTRACT Herons that breed in colonies have similar ecological requirements and intensify their interspecific relationships. However, these species can coexist by segregating temporally and spatially. In this study, the number of nests from eight species of herons (Ardea alba, Egretta thula, E. caerulea, E. tricolor, E. rufescens, Bubulcus ibis, Nycticorax nycticorax, and Cochlearius cochlearius) was estimated during the breeding season from March to August 2018 in Isla Pájaros, Mar Muerto Lagoon, Oaxaca-Chiapas, Mexico. Likewise, the number of breeding pairs, the temporal, and the spatial pattern of reproduction by species were estimated, and the nest sites were described. Nest were counted in 96 plots and eight environmental variables were measured. A total of 1018 nests were recorded, with B. ibis having the highest number of breeding pairs (299), followed by E. tricolor (213) and E. thula (142). The least abundant species were C. cochlearius (35) and E. caerulea (33). Nest distribution on the island was heterogeneous and varied spatial and temporally among plots as did species composition and nest abundance per plot (P < 0.001). A vertical distribution in the nest construction of at least three species was recorded on the island, while the four egrets of similar size (Egretta thula, E. caerulea, E. tricolor, and Bubulcus ibis) nested together in middle parts of the mangrove. Clusters among species and vegetation characteristics were recorded. The spatial and temporal distribution patterns of these species allow us to understand the use of a common resource during reproduction.
Allometric models to estimate aerial biomass in secondary montane forests
of northwestern Ecuador
- Abstract: RESUMEN Las sucesiones tropicales son ambientes de gran importancia por sus funciones ecológicas y extensión. En el Ecuador, los estudios sobre el almacenamiento de carbono de estos ecosistemas son escasos y la mayoría de ecuaciones desarrolladas se concentran en zonas húmedas de tierras bajas. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue generar modelos alométricos para la estimación de biomasa aérea de bosques secundarios montanos del noroccidente de Ecuador. Se realizó un inventario forestal en tres áreas de sucesión de 18, 30 y 50 años aproximadamente. Se construyeron modelos alométricos utilizando el diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) y la altura total (Ht) como variables independientes y se estimó la materia viva y el carbono aéreo acumulado. La variable combinatoria DAP2Ht fue la mejor predictora según los criterios de ajuste y validación. Las ecuaciones desarrolladas mostraron un R2 mayor al 95 %, por lo que son confiables para la estimación de las variables estudiadas. Se determinó que los bosques almacenan 36,56, 70,36 y 156,27 Mg.C.ha-1 respectivamente, siendo el fuste el componente de mayor almacenaje en un intervalo de 65,76 - 73,44 %, mientras que ramas y hojas representan un 20,98 -25,50 % y 5,58 - 8,74 % del carbono aéreo total respectivamente. Estos modelos podrían aplicarse de manera efectiva en ecosistemas en condiciones ambientales similares.ABSTRACT Tropical successions are environments that cover large areas and are of great importance due to their ecological functions and extension. In Ecuador, studies on the carbon storage of these ecosystems are scarce and most of the equations are developed for humid lowland areas. The aim of this research was to generate allometric models for estimation of aerial biomass of secondary montane forests in northwestern Ecuador. A forest inventory was carried out in three secondary forests of 18, 30, and 50 years old approximately. Allometric models were developed using diameter at breast height (DBH) and total height (Ht) as independent variables, and the organic matter and accumulated aerial carbon were estimated. The DAP2Ht combinatorial variable was the best predictor variable according to the adjustment and validation criteria. The model equations showed an R2 greater than 95 %, consequently the variables studied are reliable. It was determined that forests store 36.56, 70.36, and 156.27 Mg.C.ha-1 respectively, where the stem is the component with the highest storage with a range between 65.76 and 73.44%. Both branches and leaves represent between 20.98 - 25, 50% and 5.58 - 8.74% of the total aerial carbon respectively. These models could be applied effectively in ecosystems with similar environmental conditions.
Floristic diversity of cultivated halomorphic soils of the Alto Valle de
Río Negro (Argentina)
- Abstract: RESUMEN En el Alto Valle de Río Negro, el riego excesivo y drenaje deficiente ocasionan el ascenso de la capa freática con sales disueltas que, combinados con la textura del suelo, promueven su salinización. Consecuentemente, prosperan halófitos y merman los rendimientos de los cultivos y la calidad de los productos. El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la diversidad florística de halófitos en diferentes cultivos y grupos texturales en el área. Se realizaron relevamientos de vegetación sobre parches salinizados en diferentes establecimientos productivos. Para cada taxón se calculó el valor de importancia y se lo clasificó según su origen geográfico, hábito, forma de vida y mecanismo para resistir la salinidad. La comparación florística entre ambientes se realizó mediante los índices ecológicos riqueza, diversidad y equitatividad, y técnicas de agrupamiento jerárquico. El listado florístico presenta 111 taxones infra-genéricos. Las familias mejor representadas son Poaceae, Asteraceae y Chenopodiaceae. El 70,27 % de los taxones son pseudohalófitos, el 17,11 % crinohalófitos y el 12,62 % euhalófitos. Los suelos de barda y media barda tienen los índices ecológicos más altos. Los cultivos abandonados y forrajeros presentan los mayores valores de diversidad y equitatividad, mientras que los de vid y abandonados, mayor riqueza específica. Los valores de similitud florística en los grupos texturales son bajos a medios, mientras que, en los cultivos, medios a altos. Se presenta el primer inventario florístico de taxones halófilos en suelos halomórficos cultivados para la región que provee información útil para una gestión adecuada de los establecimientos productivos.ABSTRACT In the Alto Valle de Río Negro, excessive irrigation and poor drainage cause the water table to rise with dissolved salts that, combined with the texture of the soil, promote its salinization. Consequently, halophytes thrive, and both crop yields and the quality of the products decrease. This work aims to analyze the floristic diversity of halophytes in different crops and textural groups in the area. Vegetation surveys on salinized patches in different productive establishments were carried out. For each taxon, the importance value was calculated and was classified according to its geographical origin, habit, life form, and mechanism to resist salinity. The floristic comparison between environments was carried out using the ecological indices richness, diversity and evenness, and hierarchical grouping techniques. The floristic list presents 111 infrageneric taxa. The best-represented families are Poaceae, Asteraceae, and Chenopodiaceae. The 70.27 % of the taxa are pseudohalophytes, 17.11 % crinohalophytes, and 12.62 % euhalophytes. The "barda" and "media barda" soils have the highest ecological indices. The abandoned and forage crops present the highest values of diversity and equitability, while vine and abandoned crops, the highest values of specific richness. The floristic similarity values in the textural groups are low to medium, while in the crops, medium to high. The first floristic inventory of halophilic taxa in cultivated halomorphic soils for the region is presented, which provides useful information for adequate management of productive establishments.
Epiphytic lichens in the Tepuyes of the upper basin of the Nangaritza
river, Condor range (Ecuador)
- Abstract: RESUMEN Los trópicos albergan la mayor biodiversidad del planeta, pero todavía son zonas inexploradas. Entre estas áreas remotas se encuentran los Tepuyes del Valle de Nangaritza, en la provincia de Zamora Chin-chipe, al sureste de Ecuador. Constituyen sistemas montañosos aislados de gran importancia biológica y con altos niveles de endemicidad. Debido a estas características, el objetivo principal del estudio es elaborar el primer catálogo de líquenes epifitos de varios Tepuyes del Valle de Nangaritza. Como resultado de dos expediciones realizadas en los Tepuyes, entre 900 y 2000 m de altitud, se recolectaron aproximadamente 1.000 muestras de líquenes en diferentes hábitats: bosque denso piemontano, bosque denso montano bajo, bosque chaparro y páramo arbustivo atípico. Se identificaron 174 especies, pertenecientes a 57 géneros y 26 familias. De ellas, trece especies son nuevos registros para Sudamé-rica, 64 para Ecuador y 132 para la provincia de Zamora Chinchipe. Se encontraron nuevos quimiótipos para especies de la familia Cladoniaceae. La forma de crecimiento crustácea fue dominante, con alrededor del 40 % de la riqueza total, siendo Graphidaceae la familia con mayor riqueza (27 especies). Predominaron las especies de líquenes con alga verde como fotobionte, presentando Trenthepholia un gran número de especies (66 especies). Este catálogo es una primera aproximación al conocimiento de la diversidad de líquenes de los Tepuyes del Valle de Nangaritza, donde el alto número de nuevos registros indican la falta de conocimiento de la diversidad asociada a estos bosques tropicales.ABSTRACT Tropics harbour the greatest biodiversity in the planet but are still largely unknown. Among these remote areas, there are the Tepuyes of Nangaritza Valley, in the Zamora Chinchipe province, southeastern Ecuador. They constitute isolated mountainous systems with great biological importance and high levels of endemicity. Therefore, the main objective of this study was the elaboration of the first catalogue of epiphytic lichens from several Tepuyes in the Nangaritza Valley. Two expeditions were carried out in two Tepuyes, between 900 and 2000 m of altitude, approximately 1,000 samples of lichens where collected at different habitats: piemontane wet forest, lower montane wet forest, dwarf forest, and paramillo. We identified 174 lichen species, belonging to 57 genera and 26 families. We found thirteen new records for South America, 64 for Ecuador, and 132 for the Zamora Chinchipe province. New chemotypes for species belonging to the Cladoniaceae family were found. Lichens with a crustose growth-form were the most abundant with around 40 % of the total richness, being Graphidaceae the richest family (27 species). Lichen species with green algae as photobiont were dominant, and especially those with Trenthepholia (66 species). This catalogue is a first approximation to the knowledge of the diversity of lichens from the Tepuyes of the Nangaritza Valley, and the high number of new records indicates a lack of knowledge of the biodiversity from these tropical forests.
Taxonomic diversity of Thomisidae (Araneae) in heterogeneous environments
of the Ramsar site Chaco Wetlands, Argentina
- Abstract: RESUMEN El sitio Ramsar Humedales Chaco se caracteriza por su heterogeneidad ambiental y elevada diversidad de flora y fauna. Sin embargo, la fragmentación y homogeneización en estos ambientes tiende a afectar negativamente a taxones con baja abundancia o riqueza como los Thomisidae. En este trabajo se analiza la diversidad taxonómica de los ensambles de Thomisidae en ambientes con distintos grados de complejidad vegetal. Los muestreos se efectuaron durante los años 2013 a 2016 en pastizales, palmares, bosques abiertos y selvas de galería de siete localidades, mediante las técnicas de golpeteo de follaje, aspirado y observación directa. Se obtuvieron en total 464 individuos y 34 especies/morfoespecies pertenecientes a cinco subfamilias, siete tribus y diez géneros. Los ambientes boscosos mostraron baja diversidad taxonómica (Δ+) y altos valores de variación taxonómica (Λ +), ello refleja un árbol filogenético de Thomisidae poco uniforme debido a una sobrerrepresentación de Tmarus. La elevada riqueza de este género en los bosques sugiere que el mecanismo de ensamblaje del género posiblemente esté mediado por filtros ambientales, donde las condiciones bióticas favorecen la coexistencia de especies, los cuales les permiten sobrevivir en determinados hábitats. En los pastizales y palmares las especies estuvieron uniformemente representadas en el árbol filogenético. Los bosques degradados presentaron una estructura específica y taxonómica más cercana a los ambientes de pastizal y palmar. La inclusión de las relaciones filogenéticas en los análisis de diversidad podría ser clave a la hora de implementar planes de manejo y conservación.ABSTRACT The Ramsar site Chaco Wetlands is characterized by its environmental heterogeneity and high diversity of flora and fauna. However, fragmentation and homogenization of environments tend to negatively affect taxa with low abundance or richness like the Thomisidae spiders. In this work, taxonomic diversity is analyzed for Thomisidae assemblages in those environments with varying degrees of plant complexity. The samples were carried out in grasslands, palm groves, open forests, and gallery forests of seven localities, during the years 2013 to 2016, by the techniques of foliage beating, vacuum sampling, and direct observation. A total of 464 individuals and 34 species/morphospecies were obtained. These samples belong to five subfamilies, seven tribes, and ten genera. Forested environments showed low taxonomic diversity (Δ +) and high values of taxonomic variation (Λ +), this reflects a phylogenetic tree of Thomisidae non-uniform due to an overrepresentation of species of the genus Tmarus. The high species richness of this genus in forests suggests that environmental filters possibly mediate the mechanism of assembly, where biotic conditions favor the coexistence of species, which allow them to survive in certain habitats. In the grasslands and palm groves, the species were uniformly represented in the phylogenetic tree. The degraded forests presented a specific and taxonomic structure closer to the grassland and palm grove environments. The inclusion of phylogenetic relationships in diversity analyzes could be key in implementing management and conservation plans.
Ecology of anurans of Sierra de Quila, Jalisco, Mexico: an analysis at two
spatial scales
- Abstract: RESUMEN Los anfibios contribuyen a que México sea considerado un país megadiverso por su alto endemismo cercano al 60 %. De ellos, al menos 174 especies (48 %), están amenazadas o críticamente amenazadas, principalmente por factores antropogénicos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue estimar la riqueza, diversidad, patrones de distribución y preferencias de microhábitat de las especies de ranas que habitan en el Área Natural Protegida Sierra de Quila. Se efectuaron salidas de campo quincenales entre junio y septiembre de los años 2016 a 2018, para identificar las especies de anuros observadas o escuchadas durante los recorridos. Se emplearon senderos ubicados en los seis tipos de vegetación, registrando la especie y el microhábitat de cada organismo. Se registraron 24 especies de ranas y sapos, la riqueza y diversidad fueron mayores en el bosque tropical caducifolio y en el bosque de galería, aunque existen especies que tienen preferencia por bosques más templados, lo que genera un importante recambio de especies entre los tipos de vegetación. Los anuros hacen uso de ocho tipos de microhábitats, el suelo fue uno de los más frecuentes (16 especies), sin embargo, sólo siete especies exhibieron preferencia significativa por un microhábitat. Esta información será útil al precisar datos sobre la distribución de las especies y su uso del hábitat que sirvan de referencia tanto para futuros estudios científicos como educativos, enfocados en su conservación, y en comprender su ecología y distribución.ABSTRACT Amphibians contribute to Mexico being considered a megadiverse country, due to its high endemism close to 60 %. At least 174 species (48 %) of Mexican amphibians are threatened or critically threatened mainly by anthropogenic factors. The objective of the present work was to describe richness, diversity, distribution patterns, and to identify the microhabitat preferences of anuran species in the Sierra de Quila Protected Natural Area. Field trips were made every two weeks between June and September from 2016 to 2018 to identify anurans watched or listened along the trips. Trails located in six vegetation types were used. Species and microhabitat location of each organism were recorded. A total of 24 species was recorded, being richness and diversity greater at the tropical deciduous forest and gallery forest, nevertheless, some species that have a strong preference for more temperate forests thus generating an important species turnover among vegetation types of the area. Anurans use eight types of microhabitats being the ground the most frequent space (16 species), however, only seven of the 24 species exhibited a significant preference for just one microhabitat. This information will be useful for support and lead the amphibian conservation effort at this Natural Protected Area specifying data about species distribution and their habitat use that serves as a reference for both future scientific and educational studies, focused on the conservation, and understanding of their ecology and distribution.
Structure of an anuran assembly from Chaco Serrano of Argentina
- Abstract: RESUMEN La abundancia como parámetro demográfico es un elemento importante de la dinámica poblacional, permitiendo hacer comparaciones espaciotemporales y evaluar el estado de salud de las especies. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron conocer la estructura temporal de un ensamble de anuros del Chaco Serrano en el centro-oeste de Argentina e identificar la influencia de factores climáticos sobre esos parámetros. Se realizaron catorce muestreos desde octubre de 2012 a febrero de 2015, agrupándose en estaciones seca y lluviosa. La abundancia de especies se analizó mediante: 1) abundancias medias, con análisis de varianza factorial y 2) proporciones, como frecuencias de ocurrencia, a partir de pruebas Chi cuadrado. Se realizó un análisis de redundancia relacionando la abundancia, estaciones, y variables ambientales. En ambas estaciones Rhinella arenarum arenarum fue la especie más abundante, seguida por Pleurodema tucumanum y Leptodactylus luctator. Se hallaron diferencias significativas en la abundancia, entre estaciones y sexos, existiendo interacciones significativas entre estos factores. En la estación seca R. arenarum arenarum y L. luctator presentaron diferencias en las proporciones de sexos, mientras que en la estación lluviosa solo P. tucumanum exhibió diferentes frecuencias de ocurrencia entre machos y hembras. La temperatura mínima y las precipitaciones influyeron significativamente en la abundancia de P. tucumanum. No se encontraron influencias climáticas para las otras especies. Los resultados de esta investigación contribuyen a entender la estructura de ensamblajes de anuros del Chaco, sugiriendo que las poblaciones son fluctuantes en el tiempo y que pueden depender, en algunas especies, de factores abióticos como temperatura y precipitaciones.ABSTRACT Abundance as a demographic parameter is an important part of population dynamics, allowing space-time comparisons and evaluating the health status of species. This work aimed to know the temporal structure of an anuran assembly from Chaco Serrano in central-western Argentina and to identify the influence of climatic factors on those parameters. 14 samplings were carried out from October 2012 to February 2015. Samplings were grouped into dry and rainy seasons. The abundance of each species was analyzed by: 1) mean abundances, with factorial analysis of variance and 2) proportions, as frequencies of occurrence, from Chisquare tests. Redundancy analysis was performed to relate abundance, seasons, and environmental variables. In both seasons Rhinella arenarum arenarum was the most abundant species, followed by Pleurodema tucumanum and Leptodactylus luctator. Significant differences were found in species abundance, between seasons, and between sexes, with significant interactions between these factors. In the dry season, R. arenarum arenarum and L. luctator showed differences in sex ratios, whereas in the rainy season only P. tucumanum exhibited different frequencies between males and females. The minimum temperature and the rainfall proved to be significant variables in P. tucumanum abundance. No climatic influences were found for the other species. The results of this research contribute to understanding the Chaco anuran assemblage structure, suggesting that populations fluctuate over time and it may depend, in some species, on abiotic factors such as temperature and rainfall.
Trophic ecology of Calidris minutílla, Calidris pusilla, and Calidris
mauri (Aves: Scolopacidae) in two natural wetlands of Cuba
- Abstract: RESUMEN Las aves limícolas se destacan por sus largas migraciones y su dependencia de una amplia variedad de humedales anualmente. Su distribución en los hábitats de forrajeo está relacionada con la disponibilidad de presas. En este trabajo se caracterizó la dieta de tres especies del género Calidris, C. minutilla, C. pusilla y C. mauri en los humedales de Río Máximo (RM) y Tunas de Zaza (TZ) y se estudió su relación con la disponibilidad de presas. La dieta se caracterizó mediante análisis del contenido estomacal de individuos recolectados luego del horario pico de alimentación. La disponibilidad de presas se evaluó tomando 20 muestras de sedimento con una jeringuilla de 50 CC que fue enterrada a una profundidad de 10 mm. Posteriormente, las muestras fueron filtradas con un tamiz de 500 micras para facilitar la identificación. En RM el análisis de la dieta confirmó un elevado uso de larvas y pupas de dípteros por las tres especies. En TZ los dípteros fueron dominantes en la dieta de C. minutilla, pero las otras especies hicieron un uso más balanceado del alimento. La similitud entre los recursos disponibles en el sedimento y los encontrados en la dieta fue menor en TZ que en RM. Los tanaidáceos (Malacos-traca) fueron el grupo más abundante en el sedimento de TZ, sin embargo, no se identificó en ningún estómago. De modo general, en RM las presas fueron consumidas de acuerdo con su disponibilidad, mientras que en TZ hubo mayor selectividad en el uso del alimento.ABSTRACT Shorebirds are noted for their long migrations and their dependence on a wide variety of wetlands annually. Their distribution in foraging habitats is related to the availability of prey. In this work, we characterized the diet of three species of the genus Calidris, C. minutilla, C. pusilla, and C. mauri in the wetlands of Río Máximo (RM) and Tunas of Zaza (TZ) and studied their relationship with prey availability. The diet was characterized by an analysis of stomach contents of individuals collected after peak feeding times. Prey availability was evaluated by taking 20 sediment samples with a 50 CC syringe that was buried at a depth of 10 mm. Subsequently, samples were filtered with a 500-micron sieve to facilitate identification. Diet analysis confirmed a high use of Diptera larvae and pupae by all three species in RM. In TZ, Diptera was dominant in the diet of C. minutilla, but the other species made a more balanced use of other items. The similarity between the resources available in the sediment and those found in the diet was less in TZ than in RM. Tanaidaceae (Malacostraca) were the most abundant item in the TZ sediment; however, it was not identified in any stomach. In general, in RM the prey was consumed according to their availability, while in TZ there was more selectivity in the use of the food.
Molt patterns and age and sex determination criteria for selected
landbirds in an urban area of the Peruvian Central Coast
- Abstract: ABSTRACT Despite molting is an important and expensive activity in the life cycle of birds, this process is poorly known for neotropical species and even less so for species inhabiting urban zones. We studied molt patterns, aging and sexing criteria, and morphometrics for seven common resident species in an urban area of Lima city, Peru. All species evidenced complete prebasic molts. Partial to eccentric incomplete preformative molts were evidenced for six species (Camptostoma obsoletum, Pyrocephalus rubinus, Catamenia analis, Poospiza hispaniolensis, Coereba flaveola, and Thraupis episcopus); whereas Columbina cruziana exhibited a complete molt. All thraupid species exhibited partial prealternate molts. Preformative and prebasic molts were recorded mostly during the dry season, and the few records of prealternate molts might suggest its occurrence soon after the wet season. Our species also exhibited low molt synchrony, with some of them (C. cruziana, P. rubinus, and C. flaveola) exhibiting extensive molt periods likely explained by its potential to reproduce throughout the year and/or the existence of suspended/ protracted molts. Morphometric analysis evidenced significant differences according to sex for C. cruziana, P. rubinus, and C. analis, with the wing chord being the most common characteristic for distinguishing between sexes. Our study covers an important gap in the knowledge of the natural history of urban birds and provides information to test hypotheses of molt pattern variation on species with widespread distribution throughout the Americas.RESUMEN A pesar de que la muda constituye una actividad importante y costosa en el ciclo de vida de aves, este proceso es poco conocido en especies neotropicales y lo es aún menos para especies que habitan ambientes urbanos. Estudiamos los patrones de muda, criterios de determinación de edad y sexo y datos mor-fométricos correspondientes a siete especies de aves residentes comunes en un área urbana de la ciudad de Lima, Perú. Todas las especies evidenciaron muda prebásica completa. Mudas preformativa parcial a incompleta excéntrica fueron evidenciadas para Camptostoma obsoletum, Pyrocephalus rubinus, Cata-mema analis, Poospiza hispaniolensis, Coereba flaveola y Thraupis episcopus; mientras que Columbina cruziana evidenció una muda completa. Todos los traúpidos exhibieron mudas prealterna parcial. Las mudas preformativa y prebásica fueron registradas principalmente durante la temporada seca, y los pocos registros de muda prealterna sugieren su ocurrencia poco después de la temporada húmeda. Nuestras especies también exhibieron una baja sincronía de muda, y algunas de ellas (C. cruziana, P. rubinus y C. flaveola) exhibieron períodos extensos de muda probablemente explicados por su potencial para reproducirse durante el año o la existencia de mudas suspendida / prolongada. El análisis morfométrico evidenció diferencias significativas según sexo para C. cruziana, P. rubinus y C. analis, siendo la cuerda alar la característica más común para distinguir sexos. Nuestro estudio cubre un vacío importante en conocimiento de la historia natural de aves urbanas y proporciona información para probar hipótesis sobre la variación de patrones de muda en especies con amplia distribución en las Américas.
Dieta de Acanthochelys spixii e Hydromedusa tectifera (Chelidae) en el sur
del Brasil
- Abstract: RESUMEN La dieta de las tortugas de agua dulce Acanthochelys spixii y Hydromedusa tectifera es poco conocida en el extremo sur del Brasil. En este contexto se examinó el tracto digestivo de 21 individuos de A. spixii y 20 de H. tectifera provenientes de cuatro municipios del estado de Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Los ítems consumidos fueron identificados al nivel taxonómico más bajo posible, cuantificados y conservados en etanol de 70 °GL. Se obtuvieron las variables frecuencia de ocurrencia (F %) y el volumen porcentual (V %) de cada categoría de presa y se calculó el índice de importancia alimentaria (IAi %). Se analizó la amplitud del nicho trófico y la estrategia de alimentación de ambas especies. Las dietas se compararon usando la prueba de Mann-Whitney (P < 0,05). Ambas especies presentaron una estrategia de alimentación generalista, consumiendo principalmente insectos Hemiptera, Odonata, Coleoptera y Diptera. No hubo diferencias significativas en el volumen de ítems consumidos por ambas especies (Mann-Whitney, z = -0,387, P = 0,69). En relación con la amplitud de nicho trófico observamos valores bajos para ambas especies, 0,41 en A. spixii y 0,39 en H. tectifera, lo que sugiere una dieta más restringida con uniformidad en el consumo de alimentos, sin embargo, resaltamos que una dieta más restringida no sugiere una especialización trófica, ya que la disponibilidad de los elementos alimenticios tiene variación en el tiempo y el espacio. El estudio aportó información sobre la dieta de las especies de la región, generando datos que pueden utilizarse en programas de conservación de las especies y sus hábitats.ABSTRACT Data about the diet of the freshwater turtles Acanthochelys spixii and Hydromedusa tectifera from southern Brazil populations remain little known. In this context, the digestive tract of 21 A. spixii and 20 of H. tectifera individuals from four municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were examined. The food items were identified at the lowest possible taxonomic level, quantified, and conserved in ethanol 70°GL. The frequency of occurrence (F %) and volume percentage (V %) were estimated, as well as the food importance index (IAi %). The range of the trophic niche and the feeding strategy of both species were analyzed. The diet of A. spixii and H. tectifera was compared through the Mann-Whitney test (P < 0.05). Both species presented a generalist food strategy, consuming mainly insects, represented by Hemiptera, Odonata, Coleoptera, and Diptera. There was no significant difference in the volume of items consumed by both species (Mann-Whitney test, z =-0.387, P = 0.69). Concerning the trophic niche range, we observed low values for both species, it was of 0.41 for A. spixii and 0.39 for H. tectifera suggesting a more restricted diet with uniformity in food consumption, however, we highlight that a more restricted diet does not suggest a trophic specialization, because the availability of food items have variation in time and space. The study contributed information on the diet of species in the region, generating data that can be used in programs for the conservation of species and their habitats.
Silvopastoral systems as an alternative for conservation of dung beetles
(Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) in a cattle landscape in Caucasia Colombia
- Abstract: ABSTRACT Silvopastoral systems (SPS) represent an alternative to the environmental impact and biodiversity decline caused by extensive livestock practices. We evaluate the transformation of a conventional pasture parcel into a SPS, and how it alters the diversity of dung beetles, fundamental organisms in these ecosystems. Transects with pitfall traps, baited with excrement were established in SPS, pasture, and forest ecosystems. Differences in the structure of communities were compared through Whittaker curves, the incidence of functional groups, and non-parametric multidimensional scaling. The completeness of the sampling was estimated and the magnitude of change in qD diversity of the SPS concerning pasture and forest ecosystem was calculated for each season. A total of 7446 beetles belonging to twelve genera, fifteen species, and seven morphospecies were collected. The SPS was the environment with the greatest diversity of qD and functional groups after the forest ecosystem. It was more diverse than pasture, 30 % to 50 % richer in species and 10 % to 50 % more diverse in JD and 2D. It is concluded that the conversion of the conventional pastures to SPS led to changes in the composition and structure of the beetle community, making the SPS a more diverse environment than the pasture in all seasons including the dry one, when conditions are the most adverse. These results suggest that the implementation of SPS is an important measure to preserve and increase the diversity of forest dung beetles in the livestock areas of the country.RESUMEN Los sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP) representan una alternativa para disminuir el impacto sobre la bio-diversidad y la transformación de los ecosistemas causado por la ganadería extensiva. Evaluamos cómo la transformación de un pastizal en un SSP altera la diversidad de escarabajos coprófagos, organismos fundamentales en estos ecosistemas. En ecosistemas de pastizal, SSP y bosque, se instalaron transectos con trampas de caída cebadas con excremento. Las diferencias en la estructura de las comunidades se compararon mediante curvas Whittaker, incidencia de grupos funcionales y escalamiento multidimensional. Se estimó la completitud del muestreo y se calculó la magnitud del cambio en diversidad qD del SSP respecto al pastizal y al bosque para cada temporada. Se recolectaron 7446 escarabajos pertenecientes a doce géneros, quince especies y siete morfoespecies. El SSP fue el ambiente con mayor diversidad qD y grupos funcionales después del bosque. Más diverso que el pastizal, entre 30 % y 50 % más rico en especies y entre 10 % y 50 % con mayor diversidad 1 D y 2D respectivamente. Se concluye que la conversión de los pastizales tradicionales a sistemas SSP conduce a cambios en la composición y estructura de la comunidad de escarabajos, haciendo del SSP un ambiente más diverso que el pastizal en todas las temporadas incluso en la época de sequía cuando las condiciones son más adversas. Estos resultados sugieren que la implementación de los SSP es una medida importante para la conservación e incremento de la diversidad de los escarabajos coprófagos del bosque en las zonas ganaderas del país.
Rediscovery and redescription of the rare hummingbird fly Lasia pulla
(Diptera: Acroceridae) from the Valdivian evergreen forest, Chile
- Abstract: ABSTRACT Lasia pulla has not recorded since their description in 1865 by Philippi. New specimen records and an updated taxonomical description is provided here. This hummingbird fly species is endemic from the Los Ríos Region, Chile. In this area, many ecosystems are still unexplored, but anthropic activities are currently fragmenting the evergreen forests. A IUCN Red List assessment is suggested.RESUMEN Lasia pulla no se ha registrado desde su descripción en 1865 por Philippi. En este trabajo se proporcionan nuevos registros de especímenes y una descripción taxonómica actualizada. Esta especie de mosca colibrí es endémica de la Región de Los Ríos, Chile. En esta zona, muchos ecosistemas aún no han sido explorados, pero las actividades antrópicas actualmente están fragmentando los bosques siempre verdes. Se sugiere una evaluación de la Lista Roja de la UICN.
Tail condition in two endemic saurians from the northern Andes of Ecuador
and first record of bifurcated tails
- Abstract: RESUMEN Se caracteriza la cola en dos especies simpátricas de saurios endémicos de Ecuador. Utilizamos como técnicas de muestreo trampas de goma en ocho transectos de 500 m de distancia y trampas de caída de 80x80x80 cm. Para evaluar la condición de las colas se establecieron las categorías: intacta, ausente y regenerada. Entre 2012 y 2014 capturamos 138 saurios, 125 individuos de Stenocercus guentheri y trece de Pholidobolus montium. Alrededor del 61 % de los individuos tenían la cola intacta. Reportamos por primera vez bifurcación de la cola en Stenocercus guentheri; observamos tres individuos con esta característica.ABSTRACT The tail is characterized in two sympatric species of endemic saurians from Ecuador. We used glue traps in eight transects of 500 m distance and fall traps of 80x80x80 cm. The condition tails intact, absent, and regenerated were studied. Between 2012 and 2014 we captured 138 individuals, 125 individuals belong to Stenocercus guentheri and thirteen to Pholidobolus montium. About 61 % of the individuals had an intact tail. For the first time, we reported tail bifurcation in Stenocercus guentheri; three cases were observed with this condition.

Hylidae): Physical combat, fighting call, and escalated behavior
- Abstract: ABSTRACT Herein we describe a male-male fight of the tree frog Dendropsophus branneri, as well as the vocalizations emitted during this behavior (fighting call). Our observations also suggest an escalated aggressive behavior for the species.
