      Abstract: Resumen

      Abstract:

In this study we describe the finding of a Cephenemyia stimulator larva in the brain of a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) after performing a computed tomography (CT) scan of its head. Despite this anatomical location of oestrid larvae could be relatively frequent in other genera, such as Oestrus, to our knowledge, this is the first reported case involving the genus Cephenemyia. Concretely, a second-instar C. stimulator larva was found in the basis of the cranium. The location of a macroscopic hemorrhagic lesion involving the brain parenchyma peripheral to the location of the larva suggests that tissue colonization occurred before the animal was hunted. Since no detectable alterations or damage to the cranial bones were observed, we suggest a possible larval migration route drilling the skull bones. Finally, we propose the use of the term “neuromyiasis” to be referred to the invasion of the central nervous system by dipteran larvae, particularly oestrids.

      Abstract: Resumen

The Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) is an endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula that is expanding throughout the province of Granada (Andalucía). Historical records of this species in the Sierra Elvira massif, in the Vega de Granada, are missing. This recent permanent establishment of this species in the study area allows us to examine different demographic parameters from this population (density, reproductive index, sex ratio and age distribution). To approach this goal, we sampled by the Distance Sampling method this ibex population during the spring of 2019. Besides, to evaluate the use of the space and determine the range size, we captured and marked one individual. Although the preliminary basis of the study, the results define several population parameters of this newly established ibex population. Overall, this study can be used to develop a proper management program of this population that includes monitoring, habitat adaptation and a harvest control plan.

      Abstract:

The study of people’s knowledge through interviews and questionnaires can provide a good picture of the composition of mammal communities. However, there is considerable potential for error and bias in these surveys, including some associated with the familiarity of respondents with wildlife. Our main goals were: 1) to assess mammal community composition of the Huinay Biological Reserve, a remote Valdivian rainforest area in southern Chile, and 2) to evaluate the relationship between the degree of respondents’ contact with native mammals and their knowledge about the mammal community. A questionnaire was designed to gather data about the mammal species recorded by people who lived in, or had visited, the area between 2010 and 2013. A total of 13 mammal species were mentioned by 43 participants in the survey. Overall, all the mammal species that inhabit the study area according to general mammal distribution maps were identified in our survey. Both the total number of species mentioned (observed or not) and the number of species seen by the respondents were positively associated with the time they stayed in the area. Our findings suggest that questionnaire surveys may provide useful information about the composition of mammal communities in remote areas of southern Chile, but selecting knowledgeable respondents is challenging.

      Abstract: Resumen

We have measured 98 mandibles and 717 teeth of shrews of Sorex (Soricidae, Eulipotyphla) of the Aragonian, Navarre and Vasc Pyrenees. The material comes from owl pellets recovered between 1967 and 1969 and takes part of the collection of the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología (IPE-CSIC). The material has been reclassified using osseous criteria, biometrics and discriminant functions, obtaining that these species are Sorex coronatus and Sorex minutus. The study of S. coronatus is interesting because it is similar to S. araneus and Sorex granarius so it is easy to confuse them if we only have bones and teeth. For this reason, people usually group them as Sorex sp. As consequence, the information about them in the Iberian Peninsula is scarce, and especially in Aragón. The analyses of the measurements show that there is a difference among the occidental populations and the oriental zones of the area studied. In general, values decrease to the west; they are larger in the zones with a Mediterranean influence than in the Atlantic ones. The most useful measurements to compare them are the measurements of mandibles. On the other hand, the measurements of teeth allow the comparison with bibliographic data of palaeontological material that consists mainly of incomplete mandibles.
