Abstract: Notes onHypselostomatidae (Gastropoda: Eupulmonata: Pupilloidea) from MyanmarGojšina, Vukašin; Chen, Zhe-Yu; Páll-Gergely, Barna
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 131 - 139 In this paper we report specimens from Ava (Inn Wa), Myanmar, that are almost identical to the holotype of Boysidia (Bensonella) tianxingqiaoensis T.-C. Luo, D. -N. Chen & G. -Q. Zhang, 2000, a species originally described from Guizhou, China, c. 1020 km to the northeast. This species and Hypselostoma bensonianum W. T. Blanford, 1863 are moved to the genus Gyliotrachela. Additionally, Gyliotrachela muangon Panha & J. B. Burch in Panha et al., 2004 is reported for the first time from the territory of Myanmar. These 3 species are the only representatives of Gyliotrachela known from this country. We illustrate each of them as well as Hypelostoma tubiferum (Benson, 1856), the type species of that genus.

Abstract: Origin of the introduced Germanpopulation of Micropontica caucasica (A. Schmidt, 1868) andphylogenetic relationships within the genus (Gastropoda: Clausiliidae)Neiber, Marco T.; Hausdorf, Bernhard
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 141 - 152 A population of the Caucasian doorsnail Micropontica caucasica has recently been discovered in the Huy Ridge in western Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The present thriving population is in all likelihood the result of a deliberate introduction by the late Prof. Dr Eberhard Clauss who lived in Quedlinburg and collected extensively in the Caucasus region. We used mitochondrial sequence data and multilocus AFLP data to elucidate the origin and relationships of the German population to potential source populations in the Greater Caucasus. The results of our molecular genetic analyses suggest that the German population of M. caucasica originated from the Mzymta Valley near Monastyr in the Russian Greater Caucasus where Clauss collected the species in the 1970s and 1980s. Furthermore, our data corroborate the status of the recently described M. olgae from Abkhazia as a distinct species.

Abstract: The forgotten speciesLeptochiton alascensis (Thiele, 1909) (Mollusca:Polyplacophora) and its relativesSirenko, Boris I.; Sigwart, Julia D.
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 119 - 130 Leptochiton alascensis (Thiele, 1909) is a member of a shallow marine species complex that spans the North Pacific. This species had been considered a junior synonym of L. rugatus (Carpenter in Pilsbry, 1892), and an ambiguous type locality and limited morphological data has impeded its recognition. Based on the study of the type material of L. alascensis, as well as Asian and American specimens, this species can be distinguished from other closely related chitons. A comparison of this species with its closest relatives was carried out, and its validity as a separate species was confirmed.

Abstract: Description of two Tudorella species (Gastropoda: Sorbeoconcha:Pomatiidae) from the Early Pliocene of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands,Spain)Groh, Klaus; Hutterer, Rainer; Ripken, Theo E.J.; Neiber, Marco T.
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 75 - 84 The first Neogene deposits from Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain) containing fossil landsnail shells were already described in the mid-19th century, and additional sites with a rich terrestrial gastropod fauna of Late Miocene and Early Pliocene age have been discovered since then. However, few species from these deposits have been scientifically named and described. Here we describe 2 Tudorella Fischer, 1885 species, T. rothei sp. nov. and T. lenneae sp. nov., from Early Pliocene deposits in Fuerteventura. We compare the new species with extant and fossil members of the genus, as well as with other representatives of the Pomatiidae from the Western Palaearctic region. The 2 new species represent the first records of the genus Tudorella from the Canary Islands, from where only endemic species belonging to the genus Pomatias Studer, 1789 had been known until now.

Abstract: The identity of Caecum arabicum Issel, 1869,with the description of a new species from eastern Africa andthe synonymization of caecid taxa introduced by Selli(Gastropoda: Caecidae)Vannozzi, Angelo
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 85 - 92 Caecum arabicum Issel, 1869 was described on 2 subfossil specimens from the Eritrean coast of the Red Sea. This species has been cited a few times in the literature, with contrasting interpretations. Examination of the type material revealed that this species is a junior synonym of C. neocaledonicum de Folin, 1868. Specimens attributed to Issel’s species in both historical collections and the literature are reviewed and Caecum hyalinum n. sp. from the eastern African coast is described as new. Furthermore, clarification of caecid taxa described by Selli (1974) from Eritrea is provided: Caecum afrum is a junior synonym of C. sepimentum de Folin, 1868, while Meioceras mateldae and Parastrophia christinae are both synonyms of Mauroceras kajiyamai (Habe, 1963).

  • Underwater-sailing locomotion in intertidal gastropods: a comparison of
           Neotropical species

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Underwater-sailing locomotion in intertidalgastropods: a comparison of Neotropical speciesPeters, Winfried S.
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 93 - 105 South African whelks of the genus Bullia (Nassariidae) are the textbook examples of gastropods that utilize their expanded foot as an underwater sail to conduct tidal migrations. Underwater-sailing behaviour occurs also in unrelated taxa, but comparative studies are lacking. Here I report observations of 5 underwater-sailing species on sandy beaches in Central and South America, which revealed 3 distinct sail morphologies. Measurements of the velocities of animals falling through a water column showed that the relative increase in hydrodynamic drag induced by the expanded foot differed between sail types. It was largest in the apron-shaped sails of Olivellinae (Olividae), followed by the board-shaped sail of Agaroniinae (Olividae), and the umbrella-shaped sails of Terebridae. Underwater-sailing locomotion is not necessarily linked to tidal migrations, as it was observed on microtidal beaches of negligible tidal amplitude. When kept in small tanks, all Neotropical sailing species responded to moving water by detaching from the substrate and expanding the foot. None of 16 control species from rocky shores exhibited this “full-sail response”. Based on these findings and the sparse literature, it is hypothesized that underwater-sailing behaviour in gastropods evolved repeatedly from the burial escape responses commonly shown by benthic inhabitants of dynamic soft-sediment habitats.

Abstract: The genus Bythinella Moquin-Tandon, 1856 inthe French Languedoc (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Truncatelloidea)Boeters, Hans D.
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 107 - 118 A review of the genus Bythinella in the French Languedoc is provided. The genus is represented in this region, from the Pyrenees to the Rhône, by 6 species: B. tejedoi Boeters, 2019, B. companyoi (Paladilhe, 1870), B. eurystoma (Paladilhe, 1870), B. eutrepha (Paladilhe, 1867), B. cebennensis (Dupuy, 1849), and B. anianensis (Paladilhe, 1870). For each species, I summarise the diagnostic morphological characters, including shell morphology and genital anatomy, as well as information on habitats and distribution. A determination key is also provided. Bythinia (Bythinella) ferussina webbiana Moquin-Tandon, 1856 is regarded as junior synonym of Bythinella cebennensis(Dupuy, 1849).

Abstract: A new species of the little-known genusGoriella Moolenbeek, 2008 (Caenogastropoda: Eulimidae) from theHawaiian Archipelago, North Pacificde Souza, Leonardo Santos
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 1 - 6 A new species from Midway Atoll, near the northwestern end of the Hawaiian Archipelago, is assigned to the eulimid genus Goriella Moolenbeek, 2008, which was previously monotypic. Goriella sandroi Moolenbeek, 2008 (type species) was known only from the Indo-Pacific. Thus, the geographic distribution of the genus is extended to the northern Pacific. Goriella dalli sp. nov. differs from G. sandroi mainly in its larger shell, with a more flexed spire, the absence of a carinated base, and by the less flared and flattened peristome. An amended diagnosis is provided for Goriella based on new observations of the spiral sculpture.

Abstract: Do not judge a snail by its shell: molecular identification of Pomacea species (Gastropoda: Ampullariidae), with particular reference to the Peruvian Amazonian giant apple snail, erroneously synonymized with Pomacea maculataRamírez, Rina; Ramirez, Jorge L.; Rivera, Fátima; Justino, Sandra; Solís, María; Morín, Jaime; Ampuero, André; Mendivil, Alejandro; Congrains, Carlos
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 7 - 17 Apple snails, family Ampullariidae, are conspicuous inhabitants of water bodies in Peruvian Amazonia, and they are a significant protein resource for mostly the native people. Despite recent efforts to resolve the evolutionary relationships within the genus Pomacea Perry, 1810, its diversity is still undoubtedly undersampled, and the identities of some species are not yet adequately known. DNA barcodes and phylogenetic analyses with COI and 16S rRNA mitochondrial markers have allowed us to discriminate apple snail species sold in open-air markets in the city of Iquitos, Peru, as well as the Peruvian giant species of Pomacea, which probably was referred to in the past as P. maculata Perry, 1810. From open-air markets and rivers surrounding Iquitos we identified P. nobilis (Reeve, 1856) and P. aulanieri (Deville & Huppé, 1850), along with 2 unidentified species of Pomacea, which we designate P. sp. 2 and P. sp. 3. A third unidentified species, P. sp. 1, which has the Spanish name “churo gigante” (giant apple snail), was only found in lagoons of the Huallaga and Napo rivers. Pomacea sp. 1 does not correspond to P. maculata, although it does belong to the P. canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) clade. Pomacea sp. 2 was the only species with high sequence similarity to sequences deposited in GenBank, which belong to a Pomacea species introduced to Florida, USA.

Abstract: Will the realLimax nyctelius please step forward: Lehmannia, Ambigolimax, orMalacolimax' No, Letourneuxia! msrevacc:2022-05-03Hutchinson, John M.C.; Reise, Heike; Schlitt, Bettina
Archiv für Molluskenkunde International Journal of Malacology, (2022), p. 19 - 41 In 1861 Bourguignat described Limax nyctelius, a species of terrestrial slug from Algeria. Although the surviving identifiable syntype specimen is Ambigolimax melitensis, the description and illustration unambiguously refer to the arionid Letourneuxia numidica, because of the position of the pneumostome. We designate the lectotype as the specimen that Bourguignat illustrated (now lost), requiring L. numidica to be known as Letourneuxia nyctelia. Unfortunately, the name nyctelia has meanwhile been used for 4 other species, occurring across 4 continents. Simroth and Pollonera referred to a North African species lacking a rectal caecum, so potentially a Malacolimax. Quick and others referred to a species of Ambigolimax presumed native in North Africa but known also from Scottish greenhouses, Elba, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand; we name it A. waterstoni n. sp. Its long penis and lack of a penial appendage caused confusion with a Lehmannia s. s. species with a similar penis form from the Carpathian Mountains, extending also from Albania across Bulgaria. The structures inside the penis are very distinct from those of A. waterstoni. We name it L. carpatica n. sp. Lastly, the species invasive in Great Britain and California, and reported also from France, Greece, and Spain, including the Canary Islands, is named here Ambigolimax parvipenis n. sp. It also has no penial appendage, but the penis is very short. The length of the rectal caecum emerged as a useful identification character: usually it extends to, or beyond, the posterior tip of the visceral sac in Lehmannia s. s., whereas in Ambigolimax it stops well short, except that it often reaches almost to the tip in A. valentianus.
