  • Chronic Psychological Stress Disrupts Iron Metabolism and Enhances Hepatic
           Mitochondrial Function in Mice

      Abstract: Abstract To explore the changes in iron metabolism and mitochondrial function exposed to chronic psychological stress, seventy-five male mice aged 5 ~ 6 weeks were randomly sorted into 2 groups: control group and chronic psychological stress group. Mice were conducted by communication box to induce psychological stress for 21 consecutive days. The results showed that chronic psychological stress led to a significant reduction in average daily gain (P < 0.01) and the final weight (P < 0.05). Chronic psychological stress greatly increased plasma and duodenal iron level (P < 0.05), whereas markedly decreased hepatic iron content in mice (P < 0.05). Increasing expression of duodenal DCYTB and FPN (P < 0.05) was observed in mice exposed to chronic psychological stress. Moreover, chronic psychological stress greatly enhanced hepatic TFR1, FTL, and FPN protein expression (P < 0.05) in mice. Additionally, chronic psychological stress enhanced the levels of hepatic NADH, NAD + , ATP, mtDNA content, mtDNA-encoded genes, and the activity of mitochondrial complex I and II (P < 0.05). Taken together, chronic psychological stress impairs growth, disrupts iron metabolism, and enhances hepatic mitochondrial function in mice. These results will provide new insights for understanding the mechanisms of iron metabolism and mitochondrial function during chronic psychological stress.

  • Candesartan Protects Against Cadmium-Induced Hepatorenal Syndrome by
           Affecting Nrf2, NF-κB, Bax/Bcl-2/Cyt-C, and Ang II/Ang 1–7 Signals

      Abstract: Abstract Cadmium (Cd) is a serious pollutant in the environment. Candesartan is an angiotensin II (Ang II) receptor antagonist with promising diverse health benefits. The current study is planned to investigate the hepatorenal protective effects of candesartan against Cd-induced hepatic and renal intoxication. Our results demonstrated that candesartan effectively attenuated Cd-induced hepatorenal intoxication, as evidenced by improving hepatic and renal function biomarkers. Besides, candesartan reversed hepatic and renal histopathological abrasions induced by Cd toxicity. Candesartan antioxidant effect was mediated by Nrf2 activation. Also, candesartan suppressed hepatorenal inflammation by modulating NF-κB/IκB. Moreover, candesartan attenuated Cd hepatorenal apoptosis by upregulating Bcl-2 and downregulating Bax and Cyt-C proteins. Interestingly, these effects are suggested to be an outcome of modulating of Ang II/Ang 1–7 signal. Overall, our findings revealed that candesartan could attenuate Cd-induced hepatorenal intoxication through modulation of Nrf2, NF-κB/IκB, Bax/Bcl-2/Cyt-c, and Ang II/Ang 1–7 signaling pathways.

  • The Concentration of Radionuclides (Lead-210, Polonium-210, and
           Cesium-137) in the Muscle of Sardine Fish: a Global Systematic Review,
           Meta-analysis, and Exposure Assessment

      Abstract: Abstract With the increasing use of nuclear technology, concerns about the contamination of water resources with radionuclides and the contamination of seafood are increasing. In the current investigation, a meta-analysis and exposure assessment regarding the concentration of radionuclides, including lead-210 (Pb-210), polonium -210 (Po-210), and cesium-137 (Cs-137) in the muscle of Sardin fish were conducted. In this regard, some databases including Scopus and PubMed were selected to retrieve papers on the concentration of radionuclides in the muscle of Sardin fish from January 2000 to 25 June 2021. The used keywords were polonium-210, natural radioactivity, lead-210, radiocesium, cesium-137, radionuclides, radium-226, seafood, marine foods, fish, sardine fish, sardinella longiceps, and Clupeidae. Also, effective dose (ED) was calculated to estimate carcinogenic risk in Sardine fish consumers. The rank order of radionuclides in the muscle of sardine fish was Po-210 (31.50 Bq/kg) > Pb-210 (3.34 Bq/kg) > Cs-137 (0.48 Bq/kg). Based on level of Pb-210 rank of countries was France (12.00 Bq/kg) > India (4.06 Bq/kg) > Turkey (3.29 Bq/kg) > Spain (1.00 Bq/kg) > Slovenia (0.55 Bq/kg); Po-210 was Turkey (74.96 Bq/kg) > Spain (48.00 Bq/kg) > France (31.500 Bq/kg > India (30.25 Bq/kg) > Slovenia (25.00 Bq/kg) > Kuwait (7.28 Bq/kg) and also, Cs-137 was Japan (1.22 Bq/kg) > Croatia (0.18 Bq/kg) > India (0.23 Bq/kg). The lowest and highest ED of 210Po was observed in Kuwait (5.10E-04 msv/y, female) and France (3.14E-01, male); Pb-210, Slovenia (7.24E-05 msv/y, male) and France (1.48E-02 msv/y, female), and Cs-137, Croatia (8.47E-08 msv/y, male) and Japan (2.54E-05 msv/y, female), respectively. The risk assessment shows that the exposed population are at an acceptable range of risk (H < 1 mSv/y).

  • Athelia rolfsii Exopolysaccharide Protection Against Kidney Injury in
           Lead-Exposed Mice via Nrf2 Signaling Pathway

      Abstract: Abstract This study aimed to explore protective efficacy of Athelia rolfsii exopolysaccharides (AEPS) to mice kidney against lead-exposed injury with a focus on the role of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway. Lead accumulation in the kidney induces oxidative stress which causes low antioxidant activity, abnormal pathological changes, and apoptosis. Here, the changes in lead levels in the kidney and whole blood proved that AEPS inhibited lead accumulation. It might be related to AEPS enhancing glutathione (GSH) levels and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activities, as well as the protein abundances of multidrug resistance–associated protein 1 (MRP1) and multidrug resistance–associated protein 2 (MRP2). Moreover, AEPS increased antioxidant activity by upregulating superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities, downregulating malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. It also restored kidney function by decreasing blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CRE) levels in the serum. Histopathologic analysis showed that AEPS alleviated the kidney injury induced by lead, too. AEPS also showed anti-apoptosis effect by downregulating caspase-3 and bax expression and upregulating bcl-2 expression. Importantly, AEPS activated Nrf2 signaling pathway by promoting nuclear translocation of Nrf2. However, all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), an Nrf2 inhibitor, reversed the effects on AEPS to activation of Nrf2, enhancement of antioxidant, alleviation of kidney injury, restoration of kidney function, prevention of apoptotic, and facilitation of lead exclusion. In brief, AEPS showed kidney protective effect and facilitated lead-expulsion in an Nrf2-dependent manner.

  • Hepatoprotective Effects of Taurine Against Cadmium-Induced Liver Injury
           in Female Mice

      Abstract: Abstract Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal contaminant, seriously threatens human and animal health. Taurine (Tau) has been used against hepatotoxicity caused by different environmental toxins. However, it has not been elucidated whether Tau exerts its protective function against Cd-induced hepatotoxicity. The aim of this study was thus to evaluate the ameliorative function of Tau (500 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally) on Cd-induced (2 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally) liver toxicity in mice for 14 days. The histopathologic and ultrastructure changes as well as alterations in indexes related to liver function, antioxidant biomarkers, inflammatory, and apoptosis were evaluated. The results showed that Tau alleviated the vacuolar degeneration, nuclear condensation, mitochondria swelling, and cristae lysis of hepatocytes induced by Cd. In addition, Tau treatment significantly reduced the ALT, AST levels in serum, and inflammatory factor TNF-α and IL-1β in liver tissue. Furthermore, Tau treatment decreased the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and cleaved caspase-3 protein expression levels. Taken together, these observations demonstrate that Tau has an important hepatic protective function against the inflammation and apoptosis induced by Cd.

  • Selenium Alleviates Ammonia-Induced Splenic Cell Apoptosis and
           Inflammation by Regulating the Interleukin Family/Death Receptor Axis and
           Nrf2 Signaling Pathway

      Abstract: Abstract Ammonia (NH3) is a harmful gas in livestock houses. So far, many researchers have demonstrated that NH3 is detrimental to animal and human organs. Selenium (Se) is one of the essential trace elements in the body and has a good antioxidant effect. However, there was little conclusive evidence that Se alleviated NH3 poisoning. To investigate the toxic mechanism of NH3 on pig spleen and the antagonistic effect of L-selenomethionine, a porcine NH3-poisoning model and an L-selenomethionine intervention model were established in this study. Our results showed that NH3 exposure increased the apoptosis rate, while L-selenomethionine supplementation alleviated the process of excessive apoptosis. Immunofluorescence staining, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and western blot results confirmed that exposure to NH3 changed the expression levels of interleukin family factors, apoptosis, death receptor, and oxidative stress factors. Our study further confirmed that excessive NH3 induced inflammatory response and mediated necroptosis leading to cell apoptosis by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Excessive NH3 could mediate spleen injury through oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial dynamics disorder. L-Selenomethionine could alleviate inflammation and abnormal apoptosis by inhibiting the IL-17/TNF-α/FADD axis. Our study would pave the way for comparative medicine and environmental toxicology.

  • Selenium Deficiency Leads to Reduced Skeletal Muscle Cell Differentiation
           by Oxidative Stress in Mice

      Abstract: Abstract Selenium (Se) is one of the essential trace elements in animal organisms with good antioxidant and immune-enhancing abilities. In this study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of Se deficiency on skeletal muscle cell differentiation. A selenium-deficient skeletal muscle model was established. The skeletal muscle tissue and blood Se content were significantly reduced in the Se deficiency group. HE staining showed that the skeletal muscle tissue had a reduced myofiber area and nuclei and an increased myofascicular membrane with Se deficiency. The TUNEL test showed massive apoptosis of skeletal muscle cells in Se deficiency. With Se deficiency, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) increased, and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were inhibited. In in vitro experiments, microscopic observations showed that the low-Se group had reduced C2C12 cell fusion and a reduced number of differentiated myotubes. In addition, qPCR results showed that differentiation genes (Myog, Myod, Myh2, Myh3, and Myf5) were significantly reduced in the low Se group. Meanwhile, Western blot analysis showed that the levels of differentiation proteins (Myog, Myod, and Myhc) were significantly reduced in the low-Se group. This finding indicates that Se deficiency reduces the expression of skeletal muscle cell differentiation factors. All the above data suggest that Se deficiency can lead to oxidative stress in skeletal muscle, resulting in a reduction in the differentiation capacity of muscle cells.

  • Lactoferrin-Decorated Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Prevent Renal Injury and
           Fibrosis

      Abstract: Abstract Renal fibrosis is a hallmark feature of chronic kidney diseases (CKDs). However, despite the increased prevalence of renal fibrosis, there is no approved antifibrotic drug for the management of renal fibrosis. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CONPs) have been demonstrated to possess a number of properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and nephroprotective activity. As the kidneys are rich in lactoferrin (Lf) receptors, we synthesised the lactoferrin-CONP (Lf-CONP) system to be used for active targeting of the kidneys and provide antifibrotic effects of CONPs to the kidneys. We used the unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO)–induced renal fibrosis model and treated the animals with Lf-CONP to observe the antifibrotic effects of Lf-CONP. Lf-CONP was found to inhibit the progression of renal fibrosis in a superior manner when compared to CONPs alone.

  • Distribution of Elements in Beaver (Castor fiber) Tooth Enamel as a Sign
           of Environmental Adaptation: the Special Role of Fe, Co, Mg, and Fluorides

      Abstract: Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate the distribution of elements (Ca, Mg, Fe, P, Zn, Na, K, Cu, Cr, Mo, Co, Se) analyzed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and fluorides (F−) determined potentiometrically using an ion-selective electrode in the enamel of European beaver (Castor fiber) teeth. Material for the study was tooth enamel collected from lower jaws from the skulls of the animals borrowed from museum collections (animals inhabited north-western Poland). The results of our study indicate the important role of F− as an element that can affect the hardness and strength of beaver tooth enamel. Critical to the function of beaver teeth (i.e., shearing and crushing wood) is the presence of elements such as Fe in the central incisor labial aspect (orange layer of the incisor enamel), Mg in the inner side of the incisor enamel, and Co and F− in the enamel of the molars. Thanks to the high content of these elements, the enamel is durable and the teeth are adapted to the nutritional and ecological characteristics of this mammalian species. Our study on the distribution of elements in the enamel of beaver teeth may also be important for the understanding of the enamel mineralization processes, determining how elements change the properties of the materials, and exploring the relationship between the environment and life history of the beaver.

  • Acute Aluminum Sulfate Triggers Inflammation and Oxidative Stress,
           Inducing Tissue Damage in the Kidney of the Chick

      Abstract: Abstract In this study, a total of 20 7-day-old chicks were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was administered aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) once by gavage, and the control group was sacrificed after 24 h of fasting with distilled water. Serum and kidney tissue samples from both groups were collected and compared using hematoxylin–eosin staining (H&E) and microscopy. The Paller scores increased (p < 0.01) for biochemical kidney function, redox-related indicators, and mRNA expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) downstream related genes. The results showed that in the kidneys of the experimental group, renal tubular epithelial cells appeared to swell, and there was necrosis and shedding; the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and uric acid (UA) decreased, serum creatinine (CREA) increased; nitric oxide (NO), glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents increased; NO synthase (NOS), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities increased; tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNF-R1), tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNF -R2), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) mRNA expression levels increased (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01); Nrf2, glutathione S-transferase A3 (GSTA3), glutathione-S-transferase mu-1 (GSTM1), glutathione synthetase (GSS), glutamate cysteine ligase (GCLC and GCLM), quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) mRNA expression levels decreased (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) compared to the control group. Acute aluminum poisoning can cause obvious pathological changes in the structure of the kidney tissue of the chick, resulting in damage to the kidney function, as well as triggering inflammation and oxidative stress in the kidney.

  • Selenoprotein Gene mRNA Expression Evaluation During Renal
           Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury in Rats and Ebselen Intervention Effects

      Abstract: Abstract Effects of selenoproteins on many renal diseases have been reported. However, their role in renal ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury is unclear. The present study was performed to investigate the impact of ebselen and renal I/R injury on the expression of selenoproteins. Sprague–Dawley rats were pretreated with or without ebselen (10 mg/kg) through a daily single oral administration from 3 days before renal I/R surgery. RT-qPCR (real-time quantitative PCR) was performed to determine the mRNA expression of 25 selenoprotein genes in the renal tissues. The expression levels of two selenoproteins, including GPX3 (glutathione peroxidase 3) and DIO1 (iodothyronine deiodinase 1), were evaluated by Western blot or/and IHF (immunohistofluorescence) assays. Furthermore, renal function, renal damage, oxidative stress, and apoptosis were assessed. The results showed that in renal I/R injury, the mRNA levels of 15 selenoprotein genes (GPX1, GPX3, GPX4, DIO1, DIO2, TXNRD2, TXNRD3, SEPHS2, MSRB1, SELENOF, SELENOK, SELENOO, SELENOP, SELENOS, and SELENOT) were decreased, whereas those of eight selenoprotein genes (GPX2, GPX6, DIO3, TXNRD1, SELENOH, SELENOM, SELENOV, and SELENOW) were increased. I/R also induced a reduction in the expression levels of GPX3 and DIO1 proteins. In addition, our results indicated that ebselen reversed the changes in those selenoprotein genes, excluding SELENOH, SELENOM, SELENOP, and SELENOT, in renal I/R injury and alleviated I/R-induced renal dysfunction, tissue damage, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the changes of 25 mammalian selenoprotein genes in renal I/R injury kidneys. The present study also provided more evidence for the roles of ebselen against renal I/R injury.

  • Protective Effect of N-Acetylcysteine Against Aluminum-Induced Kidney
           Tissue Damage in Rats

      Abstract: Abstract Aluminum (AL) is an important nephrotoxic agent with a high daily exposure rate and property of accumulation in tissues. This study aimed to investigate the potential protective efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against AL exposure-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Twenty-eight rats were randomly divided into 4 groups as control, N-acetylcysteine group (NC), AL, and AL + NC, with an equal number of rats in each group (n = 7). No application was made to the control group. A total of 150 mg/kg/day NAC was administered to the NC group and 30 mg/kg/day AL was administered to the AL group intraperitoneally (i.p.). The AL + NC group received 30 mg/kg/day AL and 150 mg/kg/day NAC i.p. Biochemical parameters in blood serum and histopathological changes in kidney tissue, oxidative stress parameters, spexin (SPX), and apoptotic protein levels were examined after 15 days. Histopathological changes, biochemical parameters, oxidative stress parameters, and apoptotic protein levels were significantly irregular in the AL group compared to the control group. Moreover, SPX levels increased in the AL group. However, NAC treatment regulated AL exposure-related changes in the AL + NC group. NAC treatment may have a prophylactic effect against nephrotoxicity due to AL exposure. SPX may play a role in AL-induced nephrotoxicity.

  • A Probabilistic-Deterministic Approach Towards Human Health Risk
           Assessment and Source Apportionment of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs)
           in Some Contaminated Fish Species

      Abstract: Abstract Contamination of fish species with potential toxic elements (PTEs) has caught the prime attention globally including Bangladesh. The present study enlightened on the accumulation, origin, and associated health implications of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Hg, Pb, and Cr in ten varieties of fish species collected from the heavily polluted river Buriganga. Levels of PTEs in the studied fish species were found within the legislative value suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) except for Fe, Cu, Zn, and Hg and can be assembled as Zn > Fe > Cu > Mn > Cr > Hg > As > Pb. The origin of PTEs in fish species apportioned mostly anthropogenic coupled with natural sources. Among the anthropogenic sources, industrial wastewater, recycling of leaded and lithium-ion batteries, metallurgical industries, shipyards, tannery, cosmetics, and chemical industries are the major contributors. This study identified children are exposed to As and Zn as their estimated targeted hazard quotient (THQ) value exceeded the threshold limit of safety, whereas adults are exposed to As only. The estimated, hazard index (HI) for children was found more than four times of adults; however, both the population groups are in vulnerable situation considering HI value (HI > 1), indicating possible non-carcinogenic health risk. Moreover, cumulative cancer risk TCR appraised that all the fish species exceeded the threshold limit of > 1E-03 for children and > 1E-04 for adults, which are level VII and level V contamination state for child and adult, respectively, and manifested consumption of the studied fishes arises a high probability for lifetime cancer risk.

  • Influence of Seminal Metals on Assisted Reproduction Outcome

      Abstract: Abstract Increased levels of metal ions in human seminal fluid have a significant correlation with male fertility. Few publications explain the effect of metals in semen and their influence on assisted reproductive treatments. Semen parameters and the levels of twenty-two metals were measured in the seminal fluid of 102 men attended in a Reproductive Unit. Metals were determined by optical emission spectrophotometry. A statistical relationship was found between spermiogram and iron, which was lower than expected in pathological spermiograms (p = 0.032); zinc (p = 0.066), calcium (p = 0.047), and magnesium (p = 0.048) mean levels were higher in normozoospermics. More days of sexual abstinence correlates with higher seminal zinc (p = 0.001) and magnesium levels (p = 0.002). Lower vanadium values were found to be associated with higher fertilization rates (p = 0.039). Higher values of lead (p = 0.052) and vanadium (p = 0.032) were obtained in patients who did not reach 100% embryo cleavage rate. Aluminium (p = 0.042) and sodium (p = 0.002) were found in lower amounts associated with better blastocyst rates. The implantation rate shows an inverse association with women’s age and iron and calcium content, compared to magnesium and sodium which presented a significant direct association with this percentage. A significant direct relationship was found between the positive evolution of pregnancy and the values of zinc (p = 0.004), calcium (p = 0.013), potassium (p = 0.002), and magnesium (p = 0.009). The study confirms that zinc, iron, calcium, sodium, aluminium, magnesium, vanadium, and lead have positive–negative effects on reproduction and support the analysis of metals in semen as a new line of study on male fertility with implications for reproductive outcomes.

  • Effect of Sodium Fluoride on Reproductive Function Through Regulating
           Reproductive Hormone Level and Circulating SIRT1 in Female Rats

      Abstract: Abstract Fluorosis causes female reproductive dysfunction with reduced fertility without established pathogenesis. To clarify the mechanism, Sprague–Dawley female rats were selected with drinking water containing 0, 50 (low), 100 (moderate), and 150 mg/L (high) sodium fluoride (NaF) for a short (2 months), medium (4 months), and long term (6 months). The water consumption and body weight of female rats were recorded daily. The effect of NaF on the estrous cycle was examined by vaginal smears and recorded in different term treatments. Female and male rats were mated in a 2:1 ratio for 1 week at 2-, 4-, and 6-month treatment time for mating performance and fertility rate. Selected female rats were executed for tissue and blood collection at different treatment terms. Twenty-four-hour urine sample from each female rat was collected using the metabolic cage. The levels of steroid hormones and silent information regulator 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) in serum were measured by appropriate ELISA kits. Body weight of the high NaF group was significantly less during short-term treatment than that of other treatment groups or control group. Urinary fluoride concentration was increased linearly with treatment time. Treatment of NaF significantly decreased steroid hormone level while increased SIRT1 level in the serum. In addition, NaF treatment significantly decreased pregnancy rate. It is concluded that NaF inhibits the secretion of hormone and estradiol (E2) release from the ovary, thereby reducing the rate of pregnant. SIRT1 may be involved in this NaF-induced reproductive dysfunction in female rats through regulating reproductive hormone, FSH, and LH secretion.

  • Comparison of Serum Selenium Levels Between Patients with Newly Diagnosed
           Atrial Fibrillation and Normal Controls

      Abstract: Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained dysrhythmia in the elderly population. It is estimated to affect more than 30 million people worldwide. AF occurs when abnormal electrical impulses start to activate in the atria and override the heart’s natural pacemaker, which can no longer control the heart’s rhythm. Since atrial contractility is impaired in AF, blood flow in the atria becomes stasis over time and causes thrombus formation. This thrombus causes the risk of embolism and causes complications such as stroke. Therefore, it is a fundamental cause of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. The diagnosis of AF is usually made with the help of electrocardiography (ECG). The absence of P waves in ECG and irregular R-R interval is sufficient for diagnosis. AF is most commonly associated with advanced age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction, obesity, alcohol use, physical inactivity, and underlying ischemic heart diseases. As well as to all these usual risk factors, electrolyte disorders and mineral deficiencies also play an essential role in the etiology of AF. Previous studies have clearly demonstrated that serum electrolyte changes have a role in the etiology of AF. These include electrolytes such as serum magnesium, calcium, potassium, and chloride. However, there is not enough information in the literature about the effects of trace elements on AF. Selenium is a trace element that plays an important role in many systems in the human body. It has a vital role in inflammation, regulation of antioxidant reactions, and fibrosis of tissues in both animals and humans. It is known that selenium deficiency causes many cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmia. Our study aimed to compare serum selenium levels in newly diagnosed AF patients with the healthy control group.

      Abstract: Abstract The objective of this review was to analyze the effect of dietary selenium on oxidative stress in horses by considering past and recent bibliographic sources. Some research was done on oxidative stress, related pathologies and how selenium regulates oxidative stress. Oxidizing molecules are molecules that can accept electrons from the substances with which they react. Oxidizing These molecules, of oxidizing, are found naturally in any organism, and there are antioxidant mechanisms that regulate its activity. However, when the body is stressed, oxidizing molecules outperform the antioxidants, causing an imbalance known as oxidative stress. Among antioxidant molecules, selenium can act as an important antioxidant in the body. The antioxidant activity is based on an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which depends on selenium and controls the activity of oxidizing molecules.

  • Hepatotoxicity and ALAD Activity Profile for Prediction of NOAEL of Metal
           Welding Fumes in Albino Rats

      Abstract: Abstract Metal fume pollutants of urban Kano, a city of over 10 million people, and widespread metal works have increased exposure with related health effects. Few data on metal fume toxicity and atmospheric levels have been documented in Nigeria and Kano in particular. Hence, the work was aimed at evaluating the metal fume toxicity to laboratory rat species for setting the permissible limit of exposure in urban Kano. The investigation involved the collection of metal welding fumes and subsequent laboratory analysis. Experimental animals were then exposed intratracheally to varying doses of the fumes which were equivalent to normal metal workers’ daily routine of 2, 4, and 8 h for 3, 5, 10, and 20 years. Following euthanization, whole blood samples were collected and functions of liver and delta-aminolevunilic acid dehydratase were evaluated in the serum. Exposure to the fumes has caused significant mortality that was observed to be dose-dependent and statistically different (p < 0.05); moreover, the fumes had synergistically affected the functions of liver. In addition, the fumes had increased (statistically) the activity delta-aminolevinilic acid dehydratase. This has indicated that exposure to metal welding fumes being multi-elemental is toxic and had produced mortality at exposure to higher doses of metal welding fumes. It was therefore established from the study that no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for metal welding fumes is 25.73 mg with LD50 of 270 mg which corresponds to the metal worker’s 4-h shifts daily for 5 years under existing working conditions. It was recommended that regular monitoring should be put in place to limit exposure and extent of engagement in metal works beyond NOAEL levels.
