Design and Implementation of Ball and Beam System Using PID Controller

  Abstract: The ball and beam system is laboratory equipment with high nonlinearity in its dynamics. The main ideas of the paper are to model the ball and beam system considering nonlinear factors and coupling effect and to design Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller to control the ball position. The system consists of an Arduino microcontroller. It receives the ball position from ultrasonic distance sensor and compares it with the desired distance which can be set by the user. PID algorithm has built in Arduino to process the difference in signal between desired and real position into control signal. Arduino sends control signal to the DC servomotor which rotate to change the ball position and meet the desired distance. MATLAB software program has been used to plot instant system response by interfacing Arduino with computer to determine the system characteristics with different values of controller parameters in order to choose parameters values which obtained best performance for the system.

Mobile Information Services Delivery by Librarians in University Libraries
in Nigeria: Some Observations

  Abstract: This work focused on Mobile Information Services delivery by Librarians in University Libraries in Nigeria. The Nigerian populace have overwhelmingly embraced the use of mobile devices as an integral part of their everyday lives. As at 2015, Nigeria ranks 7th in the world list of mobile phone users and 1st in Africa. On the world list of internet users, Nigeria is also 7th with 86,436,611 internet users. Also, in a 2015 profiling of countries that love smartphones by e-marketers, Nigeria was ranked 17th in the world. The need for this study was prompted after observing that most categories of people in the University communities rely much on Mobile technologies such as smart phones, cell phones, iPods, MP3 players and tablets as some of the mobile devices used in academic libraries, to locate, retrieve, evaluate and use information and the need for librarians in the University Libraries in Nigeria to assist these Information users with the use of Mobile technologies to professionally meet their Information needs. This therefore raises a question of what could be done to assist these information users in these University communities. The Study reveals that electricity failure; too many mobile devices to learn; lack of knowledge; slow speed of the internet; inadequate funds, staff and training opportunities in using mobile devices for marketing library and information products and services have been identified as some of the constraints to mobile information services delivery. Because of the mentioned problems, necessary measures should be taken as recommended by the researcher in the concluding part of this research work.

Heterogeneous Data and Big Data Analytics

  Abstract: Heterogeneity is one of major features of big data and heterogeneous data result in problems in data integration and Big Data analytics. This paper introduces data processing methods for heterogeneous data and Big Data analytics, Big Data tools, some traditional data mining (DM) and machine learning (ML) methods. Deep learning and its potential in Big Data analytics are analysed. The benefits of the confluences among Big Data analytics, deep learning, high performance computing (HPC), and heterogeneous computing are presented. Challenges of dealing with heterogeneous data and Big Data analytics are also discussed.

Building an Effective Data Warehousing for Financial Sector

  Abstract: This article presents the implementation process of a Data Warehouse and a multidimensional analysis of business data for a holding company in the financial sector. The goal is to create a business intelligence system that, in a simple, quick but also versatile way, allows the access to updated, aggregated, real and/or projected information, regarding bank account balances. The established system extracts and processes the operational database information which supports cash management information by using Integration Services and Analysis Services tools from Microsoft SQL Server. The end-user interface is a pivot table, properly arranged to explore the information available by the produced cube. The results have shown that the adoption of online analytical processing cubes offers better performance and provides a more automated and robust process to analyze current and provisional aggregated financial data balances compared to the current process based on static reports built from transactional databases.
