  • Education and Moral Leadership Theory: A Qualitative Research

    • Authors: Ahmet KILIÇ; Macid YILMAZ
Abstract: Morality, regarded as a collection of essential values for societies to foster peaceful coexistence, is characterized as “good morals” when it manifests as positive behavior within society, and as “bad morals” when it manifests as negative behavior. Individuals who possess good morals are believed to live in accordance with divine principles and are esteemed by society for their exemplary moral behavior. People who possess good morals and have impact on their surroundings leavening a lasting impression are defined as moral leaders. In addition, the presence of moral leaders can be felt in many areas of social life (education, military service, art, technology, etc.). Their rhetoric, knowledge, appearance and other admirable qualities distinguish them from ordinary individuals. The moral leaders in formal education institutions are: Teachers, as individuals who are open to communication both inside and outside the school, exert a significant influence on society. They possess the competence to guide students in shaping their lives and exhibit moral leadership qualities by setting an example through their moral behavior. Due to these roles and responsibilities, the teaching profession has been regarded as sacred and had more responsibilities compared to other professions. Our research focuses on the moral leadership theory in education, which is crucial for understanding the teacher-ethics-leadership relationship, a fundamental aspect of education. Using the document analysis method, our qualitative research aims to inform readers about this theory by examining its implications for education and teachers, particularly within the context of modern leadership theories.

Abstract: In Examining the practices of non-formal religious education in a predominantly Christian country, through primary sources and with comprehensive detail, serves as a crucial point of refrence for both educators and researchers. In countries where Christianity is taught, academic resources are needed to understand how religious education is offered in the family. The book titled “ChildFaith”, that explores the process of religious education during infancy and childhood period of a Christian family in America with theoretical and practical aspects, was written by authors who have extensive academic expertise in the field of religious education, as well as personal experience gained from raising their own children. This study is quite comprehensive and up-to-date as it presents a general framework of non-formal religious education within a middle-class family in America. The aim of this study is to explore the dynamics of religious education in the American Christian family, using the book “ChildFaith”, as an example. The study sheds light on the potential and processes involved in the religious education of children, emphasizing the responsibilities of parents and offers them various recommendations. In our study, we utilized the document analysis method as one of the qualitative research methods. As a result, we conducted a comprehensive examination of all aspects of religious education within an educated Christian family up to the age of ten, from a developmental perspective. The book in question focuses on the initiation of religious education from infancy and highlights the potential for parents to facilitate their child’s religious and spiritual development through a range of methods tailored to their developmental stages. Its primary objective is to provide guidance to parents in this regard.

  • A Qualitative Research on the Teaching of Abstract Concepts in the Qur'an
Course Curriculum for 4-6 Year-old Children from the Teachers' Perspective

    • Authors: Fatmanur ÇELİK; Ahmet ÇAKMAK
Abstract: In this research, it is aimed to determine the problems experienced in teaching abstract concepts such as Allah, prayer, love, justice, respect in the Qur’an course program for 4-6 years-old children, and the factors affecting the teaching of these concepts. In this framework, the main problem of the research was determined as “How is the teaching of abstract concepts conducted in the Qur’an course curriculum for 4-6 children'”. The research was designed according to a case study from qualitative research methods. The study group was determined as ‘permanent Qur’an Course instructors for 4-6 years-old children’. A semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool. The interviews were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. According to the results of the research, the problem experienced in teaching abstract concepts is related to misconceptions. In addition to this, there are factors that positively and negatively affect the teaching of abstract concepts. The factors that affectpositively are readiness, methods and materials used, peer teaching, instructor family-communication, in-house cooperation and in-service training. Negative factors are age (developmental level), instructor competence, program unit distribution, lack of materials and social environment (family, friend and media). In line with these, it is recommended to provide in-service training, workshops, and conferences on the teaching of abstract concepts to Qur’an course instructors for 4-6 years-old children by field experts, and elective courses and internship practices based on the Qur’an course program for 4-6 years-old children and their developmental characteristics should be added in the Faculty of Theology, which serves as a source of program.

  • Examining the Relationship Between Parental Attitudes and Preschool
           Children’s Social Value Acquisition*

    • Authors: Neslihan YURT; Arzu ÖZYÜREK
Abstract: In this study, the effect of parental attitudes on the social value acquisition of preschool children was examined. In the study conducted using the relational screening model, the study group consisted of 210 children attending pre-school education institution and their mothers (n=210). Data on the children were collected by applying the scale individually, and data on the parents were collected by the scales applied to the mothers. In data collection Parental Attitude Scale, Assessment of Parenting Attitudes of Couples Scale and Preschool Social Value Acquisition Scale were used. Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it was determined that as the democratic attitude of the mothers increased, the acquisition of the cooperation value of the children increased. It was found that as the fathers’ over-tolerant attitude increased, the children’s responsibility value and social value acquisition in general increased, and the children’s kindness value acquisition increased as their democratic attitude increased. It was found that mother’s attitudes did not predict children’s social value acquisition, but fathers’ attitudes towards their children, and especially their over-tolerant attitudes, predicted children’s social value acquisition. The results obtained from the study were discussed with the existing literature and suggestions were developed for parents, teachers and researchers.
