  • Merleau-Ponty and Barthes on Image Consciousness: Probing the
           (Im)possibility of Meaning

    • Authors: Natasha Beaudin Pearson
      Pages: 8 - 18
Abstract: Why exactly do paintings and photographs affect us, despite being flat, inanimate objects' Merleau-Ponty and Barthes both attempted to answer just as much and arrived at two conflicting accounts of the ontology of image consciousness. In Merleau-Ponty’s conception, paintings offer an infinite number of hermeneutic possibilities, while in Barthes’, photographs are a “closed field of forces,” thereby making their meanings necessarily contingent and circumscribed. In an effort to identify the point of contention between the two theories, this paper first outlines Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of painting and contrasts it with Barthes’ theory of photography. Next, it considers both theses through the lens of psychoanalytic theory, positing that both Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of art and Barthes’ notion of the studium correspond to Sigmund Freud’s idea of the pleasure principle, while the Barthesian notion of the punctum maps onto the Freudian concept of the death drive. Finally, I argue that the crux of Merleau-Ponty’s and Barthes’ disagreement on the metaphysical status of images has to do with the possibility -- or impossibility -- of meaning.

  • The Horror of the Real: Filmic Form, The Century, and Fritz Lang's M

    • Authors: Peter Gavaris
      Pages: 19 - 28
Abstract: It is not surprising that film became the dominant art form of the twentieth century. The promise of a medium that could capture life in motion proved exciting, though soon after its conception, debates cropped up pitting the merits of realism against those of expressionism. Should a medium predicated on recording life adopt expressionistic sensibilities' Writing on the burgeoning cinema, Walter Benjamin seemed to imply that film carried with it a distinctly political responsibility to show life as it really is. In attempting to rethink this argument, I argue for the political potential of an expressionistic cinema, as understood by considering the theoretical underpinnings of Alain Badiou’s The Century (2008) when read in relation to Fritz Lang’s M (1931)—a film that embodies Badiou’s musings on the twentieth century’s aesthetic ideals and violent tendencies. Badiou writes that “the torment of contemporary art” is that it is situated at a crossroads between “romantic pathos, on the one hand, and a nihilistic iconoclasm” on the other: a knowing admission that the Real can never be truly represented, and an oppositional desire to convey it anyways. M knowingly exposes these aesthetic contradictions at the heart of the filmic medium by leaning into its own artificiality, and, in doing so, it prophetically exposes the thinking behind a growingly fascist German state in the 1930s. By the end of my paper, I arrive at the conclusion that the violence found in both twentieth century aesthetics and politics came about as the result of a similarly idealistic principle.

  • Phenomenological Reproduction in Thompson and Mailer's New Journalism

    • Authors: Brendan Chambers
      Pages: 29 - 43
Abstract: In this essay, I seek to interrogate the New Journalism of Hunter S. Thompson and Norman Mailer (exemplified in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [1971] and The Armies of the Night [1968] respectively) through the lens of David L. Eason’s concepts, “cultural phenomenology” and “the image-world.” In doing so, I delve deeply into questions of epistemological authority, examining the methods and success of each writer in his attempts to communicate experience to the reader, as well as the relevance of this endeavor to Thompson and Mailer’s historical moment. By placing these two writers in conversation, I hope to identify areas of con- and di-vergence in order to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each writer’s approach. Through this method, New Journalism’s inner workings, which operate at the crossroads of phenomenology, journalism, and literature, come to the fore, illuminating the representational limits of the genre.

  • Cognition, Domination and Complexity: A Speculative Outline of
Intersections Between Cognitive Activity and Structures of Control, and
their Relation to Dynamics of Complexity and Simplicity

    • Authors: Ryan Cardoza
      Pages: 44 - 60
Abstract: It’s a relatively common observation that the conquest of political regimes and the “promethean” expansion of human knowledge have important tendencies in common; both knowledge and political conquest are expressions of a “will to power.” This paper seeks to analyze what some of these specific tendencies are by using certain conceptual models as tools to carry out this analysis. But rather than focusing on the historical unfolding of this will to power, this paper attempts to analyze the way in which it is expressed at different ontological levels; specifically, at the levels of matter, cognition, and conceptualization, respectively. The aforementioned conceptual “models” used in this analysis are the Deleuzian concept of “stratification,” and a certain notion of “complexity,” which could also be understood as “organization.” Stratification is understood as the particular process that facilitates complexity and organization, while complexity is understood in terms of its capacity to produce higher-order “unities” or “simplicities.” The idea of this relation between complexity and simplicity is taken from complexity theory and chaos theory. Regarding the specific topic of political regimes, this paper uses Gilles Deleuze’s essay “Society of Control” as an example of how concepts themselves are an integral part of these regimes, in that they are not merely implemented, but, rather, are “incarnated” through them.

  • Walter Benjamin's "Über den Begriff der Geschichte"
           and the Marxist Tradition

    • Authors: Maxwell Wade
      Pages: 61 - 74
Abstract: Walter Benjamin's Theses on the Concept of History (1942) have long puzzled Benjamin scholars due to several of its stylistic and thematic departures from earlier works. In this paper, I evaluate the relation of the text to the rest of Benjamin’s thought, as well as the various schools of interpretation surrounding it. I then use that initial framework in order to place Benjamin’s text in conversation with other Marxist texts (so as to demonstrate parallel lines of thought between Benjamin’s latter works and the earlier Marxist tradition). By examining certain key texts in the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe, or MEGA, I indicate the ways in which Marx engaged with many of the same questions and themes as Benjamin's Theses, and, in doing so, argue against the dominant interpretation that sees this text as a break with Benjamin's prior Marxist, political commitments.

  • Patočka's Critique of Husserl: The Possibility of A-Subjective
           Phenomenology

    • Authors: Gabriel Vidal
      Pages: 75 - 90
Abstract: Edmund Husserl created phenomenology with the attempt of founding a new philosophical departure detached from past mistakes, specifically, the rigid split between things as they appear to us and the thing-in-itself. As such, it rejects both realism and idealism. With this in mind, Husserl posits that we ought to describe things only as they appear, without posing any predetermined thesis regarding the nature of the world. This gesture came to be known as epoché, which led to the development of the phenomenological reduction to intentional consciousness. And yet, in this latter gesture, Jan Patočka seem to have found a psychologistic and subjectivistic degradation of phenomenology, where the appearance of things happens only inside and within a consciousness. Under this approach, he critiques Husserl’s phenomenology of perception, correcting it, and proposing instead a phenomenology equally committed to the epoché but void of reduction, so that things have an autonomous appearance indicative of a horizon of world instead of an act of subject.
