  • Epistemic relativism and circularity

    • Abstract: In this paper, I review Steven Bland’s recent attempt to refute epistemic relativism by means of a dialectical argument that proves non-circularly the objective reliability of naturalistic epistemic systems. Before addressing Bland’s argument, I present the incommensurability thesis and its relation to epistemic relativism. I conclude by arguing that Bland’s attempt to refute relativism must explain how and why the commitments to our epistemic systems should lead us to judge their reliability.

  • Is quinean naturalism dependent on the metametalanguage of
           metaphysics'

    • Abstract: I will demonstrate that Quinean naturalism must accommodate a priori truths in its epistemology if it aims to retain its naturalist stance. This happens because the laws of first-order logic which it uses in the regimentation of scientific theories are best perceived as metaphysical principles rather than logical laws. To support this position, I will demonstrate that since our best scientific theories are dependent on the meta-language of first-order logic and since the meta-language of first-order logic is included in the metametalanguage of metaphysics, science is also dependent on the metametalanguage of metaphysics. Hence, the cogency of Quinean naturalism’s account of our best scientific theories must explain how science is dependent on the metametalanguage of metaphysics.

  • The hybridity of what is necessary a posteriori

This paper proposes that what is necessary a posteriori corresponds to a hybrid case of justification, without this leading to an extreme rationalist commitment. In the cases of necessary a posteriori statements, the logical principles that they instantiate are of a priori nature, and the information of statements such as "Water is H2O" or "Pain is the stimulation of the fiber - c" are knowable only a posteriori. In order to explain this hybridity, how the reductio strategy allows accepting a moderate rationalist approach will be discussed. Bootstrapping will be considered as a paradigmatic case of hybrid epistemic justification. The discussion regarding the a priori - a posteriori nexus tends to establish a hierarchy in which one of the epistemic accesses is privileged, which will be rejected.

  • The impotence of representations: a criticism of John Searle's social
           ontology

John Searle has advocated an intentionalist approach to the social, namely the idea that social reality is created and maintained by certain mental states and speech acts. In this work, we first present a detailed version of Searle’s intentionalist founding arguments based on the connection between collective recognition and language. In the second place, we offer a critique of these arguments, suggesting that they lead us to admit that the foundations of social reality are more practical than representational.

  • Ethics, history and philosophy of history in Fichte

The article looks into the notion of history as it appears in Fichte’s writings prior to what is known as the philosophy of history in The Characters of the Contemporary Age. The aim is to show how, fundamentally, that this idea of history is already present in the first writings and is coherent with the whole of his trajectory, understood as a system of freedom. This consideration allows us to conclude that his philosophy of history, and in particular the division into epochs that is contained in The Characters, is conceived from a moral perspective, quite different from the label in which it is usually considered in speculative philosophy of history and in which he appeared as an intermediary of Hegel.

  • The judicial and the narrative identity in The Oresteia. An interpretation
           from Ricoeur

This paper aims to interpret the Oresteia from the perspective of the narrative identity, to sustain that the judicial process in the case of Orestes is definitive for the configuration of its identity. The foregoing goes beyond the traditional interpretations of the aforementioned work by Aeschylus and focuses on the suffering man who receives the sentence. To achieve the purpose of this paper, the philosophical hermeneutics of Ricoeur, and the concepts of sameness, selfhood and narrative identity are used.

  • Sisyphus’ worn rock. Literature, history and identity in Imre

The question of the responsibility of the individual, the emphasis on therapeutic capacity of memory, and the reflection on personal and collective identity are essential elements in Imre Kertész’s literature. His narrative presents a remarkable philosophical slant, a recurrent questioning of existence at the mercy of the wild current of history. A holocaust survivor, for Kertész writing is a search for the self, a testimony that vindicates the victims of barbarism as well as the expression of a moral imperative. In this paper we will show some of the ethical-philosophical implications of the Kerteszean narrative, an existential adventure and an extraordinary testimony of the evolution of the past 20th century.

  • Language, fantasy and literature in Andrés Martínez Oria’s invitación

Andrés Martínez Oria (Salamanca, 1950) has shown great interest in the use of the novel as a metaphysical exploration, sometimes with encyclopedic aspirations. Invitación a la melancolía (2014) represents a magnificent example of philosophical novel where the short plot is the starting point of a long journey around melancholy. In this paper, we will focus on several aspects addressed in the text. In the first place, the relationship between language and melancholy; in the second place, fantasy (melancholic) and its aesthetised expression through literature and, finally, hypothetical possibilities of literature as a system of (self)knowledge of a hidden reality but palpable behind the lucid glance of the melancholic individual. The main tool of analysis will be philosophy in addition to psychiatry, psychoanalysis and literary studies.
