  • Gregory of Nazianzus and the Matter of the Deity of the Holy Spirit,
Author: Elif Tokay, (Ankara: Eskiyeni Publishing, 2021).

    • Authors: Hayriye Özlem SÜRER
Abstract: This book, titled Gregory of Nazianzus and the Matter of the Deity of the Holy Spirit, which sheds light on the formation process of Christian theology, was written by Lecturer Dr. Elif Tokay. In this research, the author focuses on the role of Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the Cappadocian Fathers, in the systematization of the Trinity doctrine as "one ousia-three hypostasis". In this context, it is emphasized in the research that Gregory has been an effective theologian in the confirmation of the divinity of the Holy Spirit. From this point of view, it is underlined that the doctrine of the Trinity is determined through a gradual process. In this regard, besides the basic theological debates in the early periods of Christianity, various religious groups that were active at that time and the theological interpretations of these groups are also touched upon. Another theme emphasized here is the concept of "theosis" that Gregory of Nazianzus put forward in a mystical and soteriological context and the theological views he systematized within this framework.

  • Ebu’t-Tayyıb el-Veşşâ and His al-Mamdud

    • Authors: Yusuf BUHAN
Abstract: Arabic is a very rich language in terms of vocabulary. There are many Mu'tal and Sahīh [Sound and Unsound] words in this language. Lexicography and syntax scholars have made a great effort to compile the Arabic language, which has a wide vocabulary, and to adopt a systematic structure. In this context, since the 2nd Century Hijri, works that deal with the cases related to maqsūr and mamdūd words and form some of the themed dictionaries, have been copyrighted under the title of al- Maqsūr wa al- mamdūd. The scholar of Arabic language and literature, Abū Ṭayyib al-Washshā’ (d. 325/937), lived also in the 4./10. century in which this type of copyright movement gained momentum, and wrote works on this subject. Within the framework of the limitations of the study, only some parts of the work will be evaluated. In his work, which he wrote as prose, he benefited from the previous scholars. However, it differs from other works in this field by giving weight to syntax and dictionary and prioritizing mamdūd type words in his work. In this respect, al-Washshā'’s work is a dictionary and a spelling guide. In the work, the words mamdūd and maqsūr are discussed under two main headings as semāī and qiyāsī. Within each title, there are various sections. The words in these sections are explained with examples. In this study, first of all, al-Washshā'‘s life and the subject of mamdūd-maqsūr will be briefly explained. Later, al-Washshā'‘s work on the subject will be examined independently. It can be stated that the work has a short and concise expression in the mamdūd-maqsūr literature. Keywords: Arabic Language, Lexicon, al-Washshā', Mamdūd, Maqsūr, Semāī, Qiyāsī

  • Trapping Actions of the Unbelievers in the Qur'an as a Form of
           Negative Perception Management

    • Authors: Rabia Berre TUFAN
Abstract: The fact that people try to comprehend, understand and evaluate the stimuli they have been exposed to throughout history affects the beginning of the perception process, which is a cognitive process. At the end of the perception process, perceptions that are the basis of human attitudes are reached. Since the perception process is a variable and subjective process, people can be affected by environmental factors, culture, and different views during this process. Perception managers, who know that they can affect people's perceptions, have engaged in perception management activities in order to motivate societies as they wish. Based on the examples of perception management in the Qur'an, we see that the deniers want to prevent the positive perceptions that may occur in the eyes of the society about the prophets and the creeds brought by them with some trap-making activities. Our aim in this study is to set traps based on perception operations carried out by deniers in the societies they live in, based on the examples mentioned in the Qur'an a) to discredit the truth-teller b) to base perception on reality c) to lean on values d) to appeal to emotions rather than reason e) to gain credibility and to find an effective carrier f) to use the weakness of following the majority g) to detach from the whole and to process the information under the headings. In this context, the data obtained were evaluated by using the historical documentation technique with the interpretive approach method, by making analyzes on the Kur’an samples.

  • Masses in The Qur'an the Context of Quantity Theory

    • Authors: Sena KOYUNCU
Abstract: Human is a social being. Throughout the history of humanity, crowds have formed due to the fact that individuals live together and are intertwined with each other. These crowds become a mass with a collective attitude over time. The masses, which become crowded and always prioritize the multitude, are structures formed by consciously coming together, but they also contain some basic features. With some masses containing religious individuals, it becomes possible to talk about the relationship of these masses with religion. For this reason, in our study, first of all, this structure that prioritizes the multiplicity and what the features of this structure are; will be discussed in the context of the desire for a plurality (growth), equality in the masses, having a certain goal, being loyal to a leader (leader), being us and being easily persuaded. In this study, the examples of masses that have these characteristics in the Qur'an were examined and evaluated, and accordingly, the situation of plurality in the masses was discussed in the context of quantity (multiplicity) and mass relation in the Qur'an. In the study, the historical documentation technique of the qualitative method was used in the context of the understanding approach methodology.

  • Types of Stigmas the Context of Friend-Foe Distinction in the Qur'an

    • Authors: Rabia KILIÇ
Abstract: People has found a society that can belong to themselves in every term of history; when they couldn't find, they created that history. Groups living in a society couldn't provide unity among each other, both society and individual are exposed to discrimination, exclusion, and marginalization in some cases. Differences in the individual or group have varied from society to society, but despite this, stigmatization and the resulting discrimination could not be prevented. It is known that as a result of personal or group-centered prejudices, friend-enemy discrimination occurs in society. It is possible to encounter such stigmatization and discrimination in the society where the Quran was revealed and in the past societies reported by this source. Within the framework of this distinction, in our study, individuals and groups stigmatized as enemies in the Qur'an, the reasons for this stigmatization, and the structural discrimination that occurs as a result of stigmatization are discussed. The stigma theory, which is an important theory in sociology, has been tried to be interpreted under the guidance of these verses that tell about the events that took place in the past, warn all people and shed light on the present. Although it is seen that there is a stigma as an enemy in the Qur'an, it has been emphasized that how merciful Allah is towards His servants, that the stigmatization is made as a warning, and that those who regret their actions and repent accept their repentance. Accordingly, it has been concluded that stigma is a corrective warning rather than discrimination and exclusion.

  • Pets: Theological Dilemmas and Spatial Accommodation Among
Turkish-Speaking Migrants in the Northwest of England

    • Authors: Mehmet Davut ÇOŞTU
Abstract: Based on individual interviews in the Northwest of England, this article examines how Turkish-speaking (TS) migrants experience pet practices. Building on approaches to space-making practices, as well as studies on everyday lived religion, this article explores how TS migrants constitute pet practices within their understanding of Islam and the context in where they live. This article shifts the emphasis from the study of texts to the study of lived practices. This study explores how texts are employed in distinctive ways by individuals in everyday life. Additionally, it has been discussed that Muslims’ lives cannot be reduced to text only. Instead, the text and the context mutually reconstitute individuals’ everyday lives. TS migrants established a way of life by taking seriously into account the mutual relationships between the text and the context. They lived in a certain context without excluding the text. This study explored that their everyday lives are inspired by the text. Particularly, pet practices are chosen to demonstrate the negotiation between the text and the context.Despite the increase of pet practices among Muslims in Europe, including Britain, it is less researched. Examining the stories of six men in the UK who are mixed married, this article pushes further the discussions of Islamic views on dogs, by exploring the challenges that male migrants face theologically and socially, and strategically adapting to deal with unique situations and their everyday experiences. It reveals that mixed married TS migrants come across two main strategies to deal with this practice: convincing kids to avoid dog adoption or creating religious spaces in the home sphere by not allowing dogs to enter certain rooms.

  • Stories That Consolidated Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) in Mecca (Comparative
Analysis in the Example of Prophet Moses)

    • Authors: Mürsel ETHEM; Yusuf TOPYAY
Abstract: The main goal of the Qur’an is to bring humanity from the darkness to the light of guidance. To achieve this goal the Qur’an has included many methods. Perhaps stories are one of the most important and effective methods of the Qur’an. One of the main goals of the stories in the Qur’an is to take humanity as a lesson. Through the stories, Allah informs about the previous communities and shares the life experiences of the previous ones in order to follow the desired right path. The stories are not presented randomly in the Qur’an. At the same time, it should be noted that the stories in question are parallel to the events experienced in the average of the descent. Thus, the stories that were voiced as a lesson from the past affected their first addressees more. Prophet Muhammad and his followers needed material and moral support. Therefore, believers were often consoled and given morale by Allah Almighty. In this study, we compared verses about Hz Moses in the Meccan suras with the events in the Prophet Muhammed period.

  • The Sociology of The Relationship with Relatives in The Qur'an As
           Emotional Nationalism

    • Authors: Fuat ARAZ
Abstract: Nationalism should not be evaluated as a political theory or an ideological goal as it is perceived in our age. Because the concept of nationalism is used in the sense of ideological unification due to the global developments. However, identifying a specific role to the concept of nationalism does not grant a complete understanding to this concept. We may properly understand the impact and dimensions of nationalism when we consider it as sympathy or cultural unity that leads to socialization. This type of evaluation will give nationalism an integrative function. In this context, the phenomenon of nationalism, which has a great importance in the formation of societies can be defined as a social memory product that provides mass integration and organization in the historical process. In this respect, the phenomenon of nationalism is the sociological element that brings out mass movements by combining individual-individual, individual-group, group-group relations around common values. In this study, the phenomenon of nationalism will be conceptually discussed and sociologically examined in the context of emotional nationalism with its dimensions of historical development, change and influencing societies. After discussing the concept of nationalism in regard to the aforementioned components, the context of nationalism arising from sympathy under the title “The sociology of the relationship with relatives in the Qur'an as emotional nationalism” will be explained.

  • Rituals, Space, Time and Events as Reminders in the Qur'an

    • Authors: Hazal Feyza DİNCER
Abstract: Collective memory can be defined as knowing what happened in society's past and remembering those events. Collective memory has become one of the research subjects of the sociology community, because it is of a close interest to society. God has sent prophets throughout history to call societies to their religion. There are many people in Qur'an who describe the prophets sent to different nations and their tribe. These persons described in Qur'an are a reminder. The purpose of working in this framework is to address collective memory in the context of scientific resources and to examine the reminders in the Qur'an under rituals, places, key events and history. In this context, the subject of the study is to scientifically analyze the Qur'an dimensions of reminding in collective memory. The study uses the historical documentation technique of the qualitative method. As a result, the study aims to explore how it affects society by addressing the reminders mentioned in the Qur'an. The Qur'an creates a memory chain and reminds society of these events. The Qur'an sometimes talks about the past ummahs to take a lesson, sometimes it conveys the events that took place there to show the sanctity of a place, and sometimes it shows us that the worship we do is actually based on our ancestors. In this context, the reminders mentioned in the Qur'an are sociologically addressed, noting that they have significant impact on society.

  • The Qur'anic Projections of Deprivation in its Sociological Context

    • Authors: Sare Nur AYDIN
Abstract: People need to fulfill their basic needs, such as food, beverages and housing, as well as their emotional needs, such as attention and love, so that they can continue their lives. But in the event that one's needs cannot be met or a small amount of it can be met, some people are starting to feel emotionally deprivation. Our problem in this study is to examine the withdrawal abscess in the Qur'an by addressing the theory of sociological withdrawal. However, the aim of the study is to try to understand the society by looking at the Qur'an and considering the social structure of the Qur'an, by studying the conditions under which the feeling of deprivation is produced under economic, b) social, c) organizational/individual, d) moral (ethical) and e) psychic (spiritual). The study uses historical documentation technique by means of an understanding approach. As a result, when people realize that what they want to have is someone else's, they suffer withdrawal when they start to compare themselves to that person and often feel negative feelings. And people who can afford all kinds of needs can suffer from withdrawal. Deprivation can be experienced as individual and as a group. People can only experience one or more types of deprivation at the same time. For these people, it is observed that religion has important functions. Religion provides social order in society, providing a compensation mechanism against all kinds of deprivation as a consolation to injustice and suffering. Therefore, it is observed that these people are often directed toward religion, as well as those who are not toward religion. In the eyes of the Qur'an, those who fear to lose their property, their property and even their descendants, who deny the prophet, who are physically disabled compared to other people, who are conflicted with the values of society and those who seek meaning, are shown as examples of those who have a feeling of absence.

  • The Uses of the Verb ‘Asā in the Qur’ān and Its

    • Authors: Servet DEMİRBAŞ
Abstract: Reading and understanding the Qur’ān largely depends on knowing the language structure of Arabic and correctly determining the meanings of the words according to their position in the sentence. Since this fact, which is called the literal-meaning relationship, is important for the science of tafsīr, linguistic approaches have taken an important place in defining the will of Allah in the Qur’ān in all kinds of tafsīr works. The Qur’ān, which represents the most perfect state of i‘jāz with its words and meanings, has used different literary styles to influence people’s spiritual world and understanding and direct them to the most beautiful one. One of the words with special usage conditions and a wide range of meanings in the Arabic language and the Qur’ān is the verb ‘Asâ/عسى. The verb عسى, which is subject to different usage conditions compared to other verbs, has different meanings according to its position in the sentence, the situation of the speaker and the addressee. Commentators have dealt with the meanings of the verb عسى with extensive explanations in their tafsīr works. Approaching the subject from a critical point of view and bringing together their explanations on different occasions will be instrumental in understanding the Qur’ān. In this study, which consists of an introduction and three main titles, first of all, the verb عسى was examined in terms of linguistics, then, the meanings of the verses used in the Qur’ān according to their internal and external contexts were tried to be discovered. Secondly, the explanations and comments made by the commentators about this verb were handled in a critical way and some suggestions that could contribute to the understanding of the subject were presented. In the third title, the meanings of this verb used in the Qur’ān were explained. Particularly in Qur’ān translations, it has been tried to make positive contributions to Qur’ān researchers and translation studies by emphasizing that the verb عسى should be given more appropriate meanings according to the context of the verse rather than a monotonous translation.

  • The Strategy of Coping with Trauma of the Turkish Type –Turning Pain
           İnto Honey: Sarıkamış Example

    • Authors: Nurdan YAĞLI
Abstract: Social traumas, like individual traumas, can also bring along some adjustment problems. Events that ocur due to traumatic causes such as war, natural disaster, and terrorism have the power to affect not only individuals but also the society in general. It is a known fact that there are defeats as well as victories in Turkish history. The Sarıkamış Operation, which lasted for ten days in 1915, ended unsuccessfully due to adverse weather conditions and harsh geographical conditions and many martyrs were given. If the Sarıkamış operation is evaluated from an objective point of view in terms of political psychology, it can be said that it is a chosen trauma. Just like the Balkan wars, it had heavy consequences and received with sadly by th ecommunity. However, due to the ongoing War of Independence, Çanakkale Victory was brought to the forefront in order to provide morale and motivation to the people, while Sarıkamış remained in the background with its sad story. Despite all these negative conditions, the Turkish nation understood the Sarıkamış Operation not as a chosen trauma, but as a chosen victory and embraced it with all its pain and sweetness. At the point reached today, the Martyrs of Sarıkamış are commemorated with the participation of thousands of people every year, and it is aimed to strengthen the social identity from here, to in still a national consciousness in the youth, and to live and maintain the feelings of loyalty by completing the mourning process that could not be held on time. Adopting the method of spiritual-psycho-sociale valuation and analysis of historical data, this research is the first to contribute to the evaluation of the Sarıkamış Operation or the Sarıkamış Epic in terms of political psychology. In the study, three main conclusions were reached based on the example of Sarıkamış in coping with social trauma. The first of these can be listed as the role of space and symbols in coping with trauma, the second the role of values such as patriotism and martyrdom and the role of spirituality in coping, and finally the role of identity construction in the coping process.

  • Criticism of Folk Beliefs in Terms of Its Sources in The Quran

    • Authors: İbrahim YILDIZ
Abstract: The history of folk beliefs is as old as the history of humanity. It has been seen that these beliefs emerged, developed and influenced a large part of the people in every place and time that people existed. These beliefs have been one of the important issues that the prophets struggled with, since most of them have no relation to reality in terms of their sources and they turn people away from Allah's way. In the Quran, the reasons for these beliefs, their emergence, how they misled the people are explained, the struggles of the prophet and the evidences they presented for their elimination are explained. In the Quran, especially superstitious folk beliefs about idols, fortune-telling, auspiciousness and animals are discussed and the evidence on which they are based is questioned. The basic criterion of the Quran about folk beliefs is whether the source of these beliefs is based on sound knowledge. If beliefs take their source from the culture of revelation, there is no problem. However, the representation of a superstitious belief in social relations with a pragmatic and ideological language is a phenomenon criticized in the Quran. Therefore, the Quran criticizes and rejects not all popular beliefs, but the inauthentic beliefs of the traditional mindset that unconsciously imitates the past. In this study, the superstitious folk beliefs mentioned in the Quran are discussed. It has been tried to determine that these beliefs lead people to deviate from the true belief of oneness and the criticisms of the Quran to this situation. Literature review method was used in the research.
