  • The Intentionality of Logos, the True Transcendence of Dasein

    • Authors: Daniel Isai
      Pages: 9 - 18
Abstract: This approach focuses on a convergence point between father Stăniloae’s theology and Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology, as concerns Heidegger’s ontology. The German philosopher launches a challenge as to the role that the Embodiment of Logos actually plays in human existence. According to him, the Incarnation event is for man only a corrective to the ontic, while father Stăniloae and the French philosopher consider that we are facing a true ontological reconfiguration of human existence. This is because the One who has stepped into the ontological field of the human being has the power to take man out of the being-toward-death paradigm and give him the opportunity to become being-toward-resurrection. Both father Stăniloae and Marion resort to Areopagitic thinking, in which God is above the being, i.e. supra being, so He cannot be considered a being among others, even if He were considered a supreme being. At the same time, God is love because He is the Trinity of People and it is only through this reality that the human being gains more in terms of existence. Keywords: ontology, being, supra being, being-toward-death, Logos, love

  • Suspension of a Conflict in a Darkened Son

    • Authors: Chandler D. Rogers
      Pages: 19 - 37
Abstract: Antithetical desires displayed throughout Kierkegaard’s authorship indicate the disjunctive assumption that the individual exists either in a state of increasing autonomy, expressed negatively as striving for freedom from divine constraint, or in a state of self-annihilating submission, expressed positively in terms of kenotic unification. Proximity to the divine thereby entails forfeiture of individuality, contrary to the explicit aim of Kierkegaard’s authorial project, and aversion to materiality. This essay enunciates the conflict (I), traces the crescendo of loss that births the pseudonymous authorship and ends in realized longing for death (II), and approaches a more holistic vision of psycho-spiritual development (III). Keywords: Desire, Death, Psychoanalysis, Søren Kierkegaard, Julia Kristeva, Sigmund Freud, St. Augustine, St. Paul.

  • The Concepts of ‘Subjectivity’ and ‘God’ as Related to Religious
Experience in Alfred North Whitehead’s Process Metaphysics

    • Authors: Andreea Stoicescu
      Pages: 39 - 61
Abstract: In this paper, I will present some important ideas about the relation between religious experience and metaphysics in Alfred North Whitehead’s philosophy. This endeavor is significant for the topic from two points of view: firstly, Whitehead’s thinking is among the most comprehensive and widely extended from the 20th Century, the applications of his ‘speculative scheme’ covering issues from ecology, physics and the foundations of mathematics, to art and religion; secondly, the concept of ‘God’, with a meaning ascribed to it by Whitehead in relation both with the history of philosophy and with his own ideas, plays a key-role in Process and Reality, his most important treatise. For Whitehead, religion is linked, broadly speaking, to the most intimate inner evolution of a human person. Although this assertion may seem trivial, in the context of his thinking, which defines terms such as ‘process’, ‘value’ or ‘satisfaction’ as essentially bounded with the evolution of any actual being, to associate a kind of experience, the religious one, to the fact itself of inner becoming conveys to this experience a fundamentally profound and inalienable metaphysical character. It is this character and ‘definiteness’ which I will describe and analyze. Keywords: experience, actual entity, subjectivity, process, God, value, creativity, vision of ideals, everlastingness, life.

  • Illuminating friendship or friendship as ethical virtue (φιλία) in
Saint Maximus the Confessor and Aristotle

    • Authors: Nicoleta Negraru
      Pages: 63 - 75
Abstract: This study has pursued a microcosmic perspective of the Maximian ethics, the doctrine of love and friendship, and the role of love in the manifestation of virtuosity through ongoing ethical transformation. In Saint Maximus’ view, the internal integrity of the spiritual microcosm is closely connected with the integrity of the interrelations in the new form of politeia. One of the most beautiful ethical themes of this interpretation is the theme of friendship (philia), highlighted by Saint Maximus to demonstrate the integrity of love and, implicitly, of ethical virtue, as an expression of cosmic reconciliation. I have illustrated the interpretation of one of the spiritual models of ethical virtue, namely the spiritual friendship (philia), seen as that state whereby virtue, and also vice, can be surprised directly and can be involved in virtue education.  Keywords: friendship, friends, virtuosity, ethical virtue, virtue education, agape, community

  • Manifest

    • Authors: Piero Coda
      Pages: 79 - 99
Abstract: Edgar Morin writes that “rethinking thinking” is what is urgently needed today. Indeed, it is possible to recognize a convergence in the understanding and practice of an integral and open ontology express and promote the living mystery of Being in its multicolored self-expression. This fact calls for a rereading of the tradition of thought, which has matured through history leading to this point. In this perspective, the most significant fruit was produced by the inventio of the ontologically regulating concept of God-Trinity as the interpretive key for the coming in human flesh of the Word/Son Who is God Himself. However, the concept of Trinity failed to completely generate that locus of experience and that relational and communitarian practice of thought corresponding to the Reality it had received and conceived. Our working hypothesis is that philosophy and theology can find the place again for a rebirth and reconfiguration of ontology in the guiding thought of the Trinity, taken up in its original irradiating meaning with the focus on the Christ’s cross/resurrection and examined in the still unfathomed promise it contains. Keywords: Trinitarian ontology, Thinking, Trinity, kairós, locus, Subject, Object, Philosophy and Theology

  • Cyril of Alexandria and Julian the Emperor in dialogue for the ancient
           Greek philosophy and paganism

    • Authors: Eirini Artemi
      Pages: 101 - 114
Abstract: In the 5th century, Cyril of Alexandria wrote a large apologetic work, as a response to Julian the Apostate’s anti-Christian work Against the Galileans. Aside from the obvious divide of one being a Christian and one a pagan, Cyril's religious views were very different from Julian's. Julian's arguments against the Christian doctrine do not greatly differ from those used in the second century by Celsus, and by Porphyry in the third and he regarded the relations between Neoplatonic criticism of Christian Word. As a pagan, Julian had adopted the Platonic and Neoplatonic conception of the one God. Cyril doesn’t stack up against the Platonic one. Cyril’s goal in responding to Julian is, therefore, to help the skeptical reader to find the real faith. Cyril invokes precisely the evidence of Platonist philosophers in favour of the Trinitarian doctrine. Cyril shows, unlike Julian, that the Greek philosophers accept the three principal hypostases and using the term triad, they agree with Christian teaching. So, ancient philosophers as Porphyry supported that the substance of the divinity has proceeded towards three hypostases. Cyril doesn’t only confront Julian’s view against Christian, but he also confirms something that Justin the Martyr supported centuries ago about the ‘spermatic logos’. In this paper, we will examine this two works, ‘Against the Galileans’ of Julian and ‘Against Julian’ of Cyril, not only from their theological opinions but as arguments using the ‘common images’ (εἰκότα), the possible logical arguments, in supporting the positions of Julian and Cyril in a legal struggle.

  • Intellect or Heart, Reason or Faith'

    • Authors: Paul Andrei Mucichescu
      Pages: 115 - 143
Abstract: Addressing the imputed opposition between Christian theology and metaphysics from the premise of the inadmissibility of severing ties with the Holy Fathers of the Church, this paper argues for the necessity of revisiting dogmatical works like the Fountain of Knowledge and Ambigua with the scope of ascertaining their perspective on the issue. Brief textual analyses will show why the sublation of the Messalian and Evagrian extremes by the Orthodox Byzantine synodal theology (with the purpose of a Union in God) was and remains necessary. On a third layer, the paper gives some indications of the relation in which certain methodological and systematical traits of the cataphatic and apophatic Orthodox dogmatic theology stand to scientific thought. Keywords: St. John of Damascus, St. Maximus the Confessor, Orthodox dogmatics, philosophy, science, metaphysics, intellect, perception.
