Las teorías neo-lockeanas de la identidad personal obtienen parte de su atractivo por su capacidad para dar cuenta de dicho vínculo. En este artículo analizo cómo el problema de la duplicación para las teorías neo-lockeanas afecta a su capacidad para dar cuenta del vínculo entre la identidad personal y la responsabilidad moral. Concluyo que, dentro de un marco neo-lockeano, las teorías cuatridimensionalistas son las que mejor pueden dar cuenta de dicho vínculo. Pretendo demostrar que, si leemos estas críticas conjuntamente, nos encontramos en una mejor posición para revelar la realidad de una vida práctica y ética. El propio Taylor plantea la cuestión de a qué nos comprometemos ontológicamente en nuestros compromisos éticos, pero no desarrolla una respuesta. Étienne Gilson, reconocido por sus estudios sobre el esse tomasiano, habla de un nivel de la substancia en el Aquinate. Sin embargo, su original concepción del esse como acto del ente, llevó al medievalista francés a poner de relieve la doble composición que integra el ente bajo la primacía del esse. Lawrence Dewan, desde un tomismo más aristotélico, criticó a Gilson por concebir la esencia como algo negativo. En nuestra investigación discutiremos sobre esta disputa con el fin de esclarecer cuál de los dos autores se acerca más a la enseñanza tomista. Foucault llamó a esta crítica “la muerte del sujeto”. En este trabajo busco mostrar que podemos encontrar, ocurriendo al mismo tiempo, el desarrollo de una concepción del ser humano como fuente de pensamiento y acción que resiste esta “muerte”, a saber, la teoría de la acción de Arendt y la noción de sujeto de Badiou. Lo que une a estos dos pensadores es que conciben el sujeto como plural (es decir, compuesto por varios individuos) y como constituido por un principio (es decir, unificado por una idea rectora).
