Religious Literacy Crisis in Indonesian Islamic Universities

    • Authors: Rohmat Mulyana Sapdi, Nur Ali
      Pages: 260 - 271
Abstract: Islamic universities have been accused of being the milieu of the growing movement of radicalism along with the new facts about the involvement of two state Islamic universities among 10 state universities involved in radicalism. The campus management has responded to the movement by developing a religious curriculum and interreligious-based learning to improve religious literacy competence. This paper aims to evaluative the practice of religious curriculum and literacy as a strategy in improving counterradicalism in campus. The interviews, observations, and data analysis resulted in the finding that the religious curriculum development with open minded principles, religious universality, local wisdom, and humanism values in the learning activities in either classroom and or places of worship of other religions can foster good counterradicalism and interfaith literacy and eliminate the evolution of radical attitudes among students.  This paper suggested that the learning of religious education in campuses and schools include observation to the areas of interreligious activities and religious literacy studies to improve students' understanding of religious values among religious communities, so tolerance and counterradicalism can be fostered.

      Pages: 299 - 315
Abstract: This study aims to find out how educational institutions prepare strategies and concepts for their students in the current era of disruption, especially in strengthening character formation in Generation Z. An era that offers acceleration in various areas of life, one of them is acceleration in uprooting the established foundations of life. The research method used in this research is library research with an analytical descriptive approach. The results of this study are that education must be able to present linear strategies and concepts with the characteristics of the Z-generation. One of these concepts is through a personal-constructive approach in strengthening the character education of students, especially the Z-generation. This approach was carried out as the Sufis in ancient times tried to improve their morals in totality before God and humans, namely through self-awareness of their spiritual potential and concrete actions that focused on fundamental things such as repentance, patience, sincerity, etc.

  • The Mimicry of Shia Youths in Islamic ‎Education and Religious Space of
           Education ‎Institutions

    • Authors: Mochammad Zaka Ardiansyah
      Pages: 316 - 334
Abstract: This article aims to reveal the discriminatory experiences encountered by Shia youths in educational institutions and their strategies for constructing their identities, both in Islamic religious education classes and in the public spaces of educational institutions. This article is the result of a qualitative-descriptive study of five Shia youths in Jember who were recruited using the chain-referral sampling method. Data collected by life-story interviews were analyzed using interactive model (Miles, et al). This article finds that Shia youths encounter discriminatory experiences because they are required by Islamic Religious Education teachers to recite prayers such as qunut, even though they claim to be members of Muhammadiyah. The two Shia youths who imitated members of Muhammadiyah intended to avoid the practice of Nahdlatul Ulama-style prayers preferred by their Islamic Religious Education teachers. In addition, Shia youth generally do not dare to reveal their identity as adherents of Shia. A Shia youth claims to be a traditional Muslim or follower of Islam to avoid discrimination from his friends. It was also dicovered that Shia youths pretend to perform prayers according to the Sunni schools while secretly performing Shia prayers to fight for their right to worship. Mimicry performed by minority Shia youths confirms Homi K. Bhabha's image of mimicry because Shia youths use the Sunni Muslim's identity space. However, they secretly try to maintain their primordial identity as Shias so that minority Shia youths use an identity that is almost the same as that of Sunni Muslim, “but not completely the same”.

Abstract: The Indonesian nation is a large nation that has very diverse ethnic groups, races, cultures, and religions. This diversity will be very dangerous if it is not addressed properly by its adherents. Conflicts of religion, ethnicity, become something that cannot be avoided when every society does not have a strong attitude of tolerance. Islamic education as an educational system has a moral responsibility in order to form a moderate society in an effort to strengthen the tolerance attitude of students through the learning model that it provides. This study seeks to uncover and analyze the development of Islamic education based on religious moderation in an effort to strengthen student tolerance in public universities in the provinces of Lampung and Banten. The research method used in this study is research and development design, namely research used to produce certain products and test the effectiveness of these products. The results of this study indicate that moderation-based PAI learning has a major role in the formation of student tolerance attitudes in public universities in the provinces of Lampung and Banten. PAI learning based on religious moderation has a strong commitment to instilling multicultural values into students so that they can respect the appeasement that occurs in the community. The results of the Development of Islamic Religious Moderation-Based Learning Model for students show that the PAI learning model can significantly increase students' religious tolerance. Therefore, the development of this learning model is highly recommended to be applied in the context of public universities, especially in the provinces of Lampung and Banten because they have a strong contribution to produce students who have a high tolerance attitude.
