      Pages: 15 - 26
Abstract: This paper aims to highlight some end of the world mythologies and their problematizations in contemporary culture, starting from the discussions presented by Eduardo Viveiros de Castro and Déborah Danowski in the book Is there a world to come' Essay on fears and ends (2017). Taking as poetic object the recent work of singer Linn da Quebrada, the essay discusses the reality of the Brazilian transsexual population in order to understand how such a feeling of immanent catastrophe appears more marked in populations that have already faced the end of the world for some years. Finally, the analysis also focuses on critical works such as those by Donna Haraway (2009) and Jacques Derrida (2011), in order to propose a reality to come only with the breakdown of the gender barrier and with the resources accessed by the poetic tools. Keywords: Linn da Quebrada; end of the world; cyborg.

  • Memórias da violência no drama pós-catástrofe / Memories of Violence
           in Post-Catastrophe Drama

    • Authors: Rainério dos Santos Lima
      Pages: 27 - 48
Abstract: Grounded mainly on Walter Benjamin and Jean-Pierre Sarrazac’s work, this article analyzes the insurgency in Plinio Marcos’s dramaturgy of a narrative embryo that, using the traumatic memory of characters and the critique of power as violence (Gewallt), will find its full materialization in Querô, a Damned Report (“Querô, Uma reportagem maldita”), romance and drama on the 1970s. In the theatrical adaptation of the novel, the biographical form of the remembered matter, constitutive principle of dramatic action, imposed changes in the fable that, denying the syntagmatic structure of the action, began to assume a post-catastrophe configuration of the scene in which the violent past of the character is settled in the present of the enunciation by a “dramaturgy of return” and by a discontinuous and disjunctive process of remembering. Comparing the drama and the novel, one understands how the memory of Querô’s sentimental education colonizes the theatrical action, characterizing a dramaturgy of intra-subjectivity in which the character, witness of himself, narrates his own Passion. Keywords: criticism of violence; post-catastrophe drama; Plinio Marcos.

  • As forças saturninas nas Fotomontagens do poeta Jorge de Lima / The
Saturnine Forces in the Photomontages of Jorge de Lima

    • Authors: Bárbara Bergamaschi Novaes
      Pages: 55 - 74
Palavras chave: Surrealismo no Brasil; artes visuais; vanguardas modernas; fotografia.Abstract: From a selective analysis approach of eight photomontages of Jorge de Lima’s book “Pintura em Pânico” (1943), we point to several correspondences between the photo-collage images of the Alagoan poet, and the baroque and allegorical iconography studied by Walter Benjamin, as well as the themes favored by surrealist’s french artists. We will regard how Lima’s creative praxis and procedures had nourished from the early-20th-century French avant-garde surrealist artists, echoing the investigations undertaken by the movement headed by André Breton and Georges Bataille – described by art critic Ronaldo Ronaldo Brito as: “a heroic attempt to attack the Cartesian Cogito” and “denounce the bankruptcy of the modern project”. For such can we will base our analysis on the writings and works of Surrealism movement members, as well as in the epistolary exchanges between poet Murilo Mendes, Jorge de Lima and the painter Ismael Nery. Keywords: Surrealism in Brazil; visual arts; modern avant-garde; photography.

  • Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão e Walter Benjamin: poesia, ruína e aura / Fiama
Hasse Pais Brandão and Walter Benjamin: Poetry, Ruin and Aura

    • Authors: Fernanda Drummond, João Vilhena
      Pages: 75 - 90
Abstract: This article uses Benjamin’s concept of aura and his Angel of History allegory to investigate how a reading of Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão´s work can be enriched by the thought of the German philosopher. In Fiama’s poetry, the lyrical subject refuses the continual flow of time by assuming an out-of-time “Now”, a position that is sustained by the ruins of the past and the incoming destruction which threatens that same “Now”. As Benjamin, Fiama opposes the idea of progress, while evoking a dynamic and heterodox tradition, to reveal us the world as a mere window pane into which the words of the dead poets collide. These words retrieved from the ruins of human culture combine with the world as experienced by the lyrical subject to produce a configuration where it is possible to recover the aura in objects observed from a contemplative distance. We further argue that the use of Benjamin’s theory allows us to unveil a usually overlooked political dimension which nonetheless present within Fiama’s body of work. Keywords: Contemporary Portuguese poetry; Poesia 61; Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão; Walter Benjamin; ruins.

  • Catástrofes, utopias e outras histórias / Catastrophes, Utopias
           and Other Stories

    • Authors: Filipe Manzoni
      Pages: 91 - 112
Abstract: This research aims to investigate some central images for a reconsideration of the relation between the poetry and a concept of history that is focused on its catastrophic aspect. This scrutiny will be organized in four topics that articulate both Walter Benjamin and Ernst Bloch propositions on the concept of history, as well as they relations to notions of catastrophe (mainly in Benjamin) and utopia (via Bloch). This topic will be structured in the form of a small panorama of images, namely, a genealogy of heroic figures taken as a role model for the catastrophe, some re-readings of the Angelus novus of Paul Klee (other than Benjamin’s famous examination on his theses on the concept of history), a few philosophic appropriations of Prometheus, and finally, the theory of Giorgio Agamben of rhymed poetry as a miniature of the messianic time. In each one of these scenarios the main goal is to search for an alternative to a concept of history as a teleologic closure of a meaning, in a way that the catastrophe becomes only one possible aspect in a not yet concluded time. Keywords: Contemporary poetry; Ernst Bloch; history; catastrophe.

  • Injúria hermética: A ruína paralisante da forma / Hermetic Injury: The
           Paralyzing Ruin of Form

    • Authors: Paulo Eduardo Bittencourt Fausto, Gustavo Silveira Ribeiro
      Pages: 113 - 128
Abstract: This essay intends to elaborate an interpretation of one of the poems from Claro Enigma (1951), written by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, named “Oficina Irritada”. Reclaiming de sonnet’s form, Drummond reappears in one more of his metalinguistic poems, in which he explores some classic resources and images, not giving up on his main characteristics, such as irony and melancholy. Having as a supporting theory the concepts such as “survival” and “latency”, respectively formulated by Didi-Huberman and Hand Ulrich Gumbrecht, the analysis is built under the bias of phantasmagoria, by means to demonstrate how different forms and times are mobilized in the referred poem, under the sign of paralysis. After a long explanation about the concepts and the historical context in which this title of Drummond’s work is at, it may be inferred that not only the poem shows issues of his time, but also transcends them, bringing reflections about poetry composition in an age of absolute catastrophe. Keywords: Drummond; survival; latency; melancholy; poetry.

    • Authors: Tomaz Amorim Izabel
      Pages: 135 - 157
Abstract: The article intends to be an essay about the thesis “On the concept of history”, focusing on the disruptive aspects of its proposition about a historical telling critical to the ideology of progress using the montage technique as one of its strategies. Moreover, following the Benjaminean gesture of thinking the past in a meeting with the present time – the jetztzeit – always in danger of being co-opted by the history of the winners, the article seeks to update the dangers that Benjamin addressed in the 1940s in our present steeped in social, political and ecological crises. It is less a bibliographical overview of this seminal text than an attempt to make its potentials effective on the urgent issues of the present. Keywords: philosophy of history; modernity; Walter Benjamin.

Authoritarianism and Revolt in Olney São Paulo’s Grey Morning and João

      Pages: 161 - 182
Abstract: Cinema builds a diversity of important narratives to discuss humanity and its ways of interacting. Many of them deal with state authoritarianism and its antithesis: revolt, resistance. This paper aims to analyze two of these film narratives, entitled Grey Morning and Contestation, both from 1969, for two reasons: they are documentaries that thematize students’ protagonism against the authoritarianism and violence of dictatorships; they were composed by reusing images of filmic and journalistic files, newscast audios and newspaper clippings. These narratives will be read on the grounds of Walter Benjamin’s theses, in order to observe how temporalities were constructed, together with the perception of events and the construction of history. These narratives raise reflections and debates on authoritarian and repressive movements, showing the relation between art and politics as a way of inserting oneself in time and space. Thus, the engagement of intellectuals and artists, imbued with the notion that art can be an effective channel for mobilization, stands as a form of intervention that transforms reality and challenges the grand narrative of history. Keywords: political cinema; history; authoritarian regimes; Walter Benjamin’s theses.

História da Literatura / Benjamin and a New Formation Through a New Form
           of Teaching Literary History

    • Authors: Rafael Guimarães Tavares Silva
      Pages: 183 - 198
Abstract: Resumo: Buscando situar o contexto alemão do final do séc. XIX e início do séc. Abstract: Seeking to situate the teaching practices and especially literary teaching practices in the German context of the end of the XIXth century and beginning of the XXth, this article offers considerations on how Walter Benjamin takes a position in this debate. After a more general approach to the intellectual production of this argute thinker of his own culture and time, the fundamental importance of his text History of literature and science of literature [Literaturgeschichte und Literaturwissenschaft], from 1931, takes the foreground of the argument and offers material to suggest the radicalness of Benjamin’s project. Detecting a deep cultural crisis in his time, he suggests that a critical position, capable of articulating the past and the present, through a study involving History of Literature and Literary Criticism, would be the only way to strengthen the study of Letters, in order to transform Literature into an organon capable of acting directly on History itself. Keywords: Walter Benjamin; literary theory; literary criticism; literary history; education.

  • Existir nas semelhanças / To Exist in the Similarities

    • Authors: Rafael Tomelin
      Pages: 199 - 212
Abstract: Starting from a careful analysis of two texts by Walter Benjamin, “Doctrine of the Similar” and “On the Mimetic Faculty”, this paper aims to show the proposition for a philosophy of language that has been thought by Walter Benjamin since “On Language as Such and on the Language of Man”. The beginning of this philosophy of language comes from the book of Genesis and from the divine breath of life. There are three different levels of language, the divine that names to know, the human that knows and then names, and the language of things that is mute and imperfect. The mimetic faculty is thought of as something which, in primitive peoples, was related to the magical correspondences between language and the universe, and which, in modernity, corresponds to the human decay into the archive of nonsensitive similarities, and, finally, to our inability to become similar. Keywords: similitudes; correspondences; decadence; constellations; mimesis.

  • O estímulo à leitura e a ressignificação do ato de narrar histórias
na Casa Anísio Teixeira / The Stimulus to Reading and Reaffirming the Act
of Telling Stories in the Casa Anísio Teixeira

    • Authors: Denise Marques Carneiro Neves
      Pages: 213 - 231
Abstract: This article aims to describe how Casa Anísio Teixeira, an institution located in Caetité-Bahia, seeks to re-signify the acts of narrating and hearing stories. Through the Center for Performing Arts and the Nucleus of Storytelling, the House develops actions to stimulate reading, demonstrating the importance of the production, circulation and reception of cultural knowledge. As a methodology, documentary analysis was adopted, which allows the perception of social outreach, the description of strategies to adapt the actions carried out by storytellers, in the midst of difficulties in maintaining cultural centers. We reconstruct the history of formation of these nuclei and present their main actions, which implies reflecting on the importance of the experience to make the storytelling more present in human relations. The article points out the immediacy and the ephemerality of the experiences as possible causes for the decline of the act of narrating, at the time when oral tradition is considered as the main factor for resumption and re - signification of the use of narratives. It is concluded that the theater techniques work as a good strategy to develop storytelling at present in diverse institutions, contributing to broaden the perception of the reach and importance of cultural reading practices. Keywords: storytelling; reading; cultural center; Casa Anísio Teixeira.

The Myth in William Faulkner’s Works: Between the Defense and the
           Denouncement of the Tradition

    • Authors: Rogério Lobo Sáber
      Pages: 233 - 248
Palavras-chave: William Faulkner; mito; tradição; gótico do Sul.Abstract: This essay proposes a reading of the poetics of William Faulkner, by linking it to cultural and philosophical theories about myth, and it intends to understand the established relations between Faulkner’s aesthetics and his creative review of the Southern tradition, read as a mythical discourse. This paper reflects about the relation between the writer and the Southern myth and it speculates about the literary handling consecrated to such theme in his novels. The research brings to light that Faulkner faces an existential forked crossroad that encourages him to defense and denouncement of his homeland tradition. The literary (re)creation of the Southern mythical universe allows the writer to problematize the mythical narrative the tradition evolved into and to question its ideological boundaries. The effort into narrating the Southern chronicle is also a possible attempt to rebuild the existential meaning of a community shattered by American Civil War and by vertiginous historical and economical changes. Keywords: William Faulkner; myth; tradition; Southern Gothic.

Walter Benjamin / Tracks of Avant-Guard in a One-Way Street: Possible
           Paths in Walter Benjamin

    • Authors: Nathália Ananda Silva de Lima
      Pages: 249 - 261
Abstract: By cataloguing and organizing a vast collection of fragmentary texts, which cover aspects from his reflection about supports to the literary text to the German quotidian, Walter Benjamin revels, in “Rua de mão única” (1928), the possibility of approaching his proposal of writing to the Avant-guard aesthetics of the beginning of the 20th century.  This way, the presence of the montage technique allows us to glimpse the tracks of surrealist, dadaist and cubist elements in the constitution of the work. Thus, to illustrate how such artifices resonate in Benjamin, this work presents the historical contextualization by Nicolau Sevcenko and Francesco Careri and the study about techniques of montage by Willi Bolle, together with fragments of the German thinker’s work. Keywords: Walter Benjamin; avant-guard; one-way street.
