  • The Hard Work of Benevolence, Brotherly Love, and Harmony on the Ohio:

    • Abstract: In May 1860, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise (1819–1900) of Cincinnati reported on a recent visit to Louisville for his English-language Jewish weekly newspaper, the Israelite. Surveying the city's booming commercial district—home to its growing population of German Jewish immigrants—he estimated that "the trade of Louisville must have increased fully fifty per cent during the last two years. Many retailers are now wholesale dealers, and Market street is full with retail stores.… The number of our co-religionists increased as the business did, and according to our calculation Louisville counts no less than two thousand souls of Hebrew descent." Wise compared the handsome private residences lining Broadway, Chestnut Street ... Read More

  • Suburban Sanctuaries: Postwar Synagogue Architecture in Cincinnati

    • Abstract: In the early twentieth century, the Kraemer Souvenir Company created a series of postcards depicting Cincinnati's architectural landmarks. Travelers passing through the city's train stations could choose from a variety of images capturing the city skyline, its bridges, city hall, and monumental synagogues.1 Cincinnati's Jewish community was thriving in the interwar period, and it built synagogues that projected the rising social status of its congregants. The Jewish community was concentrated in Avondale, a northern neighborhood that attracted middle-class and wealthy Jews who sought better quality housing away from the city center.2 The influx of Jews into Avondale sparked a wave of synagogue construction along ... • Cincinnati's Best Citizens: Jewish Community in an American City

    • Abstract: The two hundredth anniversary of organized Jewish presence in the city of Cincinnati calls for more than just a celebration of communal duration. A historical accounting of the city's Jewish community invites reflection on its outsized contribution to both American Judaism and the city of Cincinnati. The tale of Cincinnati Jews' role in the creation of American Reform Judaism, while certainly deserving of further and deeper examination, is an oft-told one. Less noted has been this same community's outsized contribution in shaping the vision for the city of Cincinnati in the twentieth century.1It is not surprising, perhaps, that the notions of Jewish and American identity that led to the creation in Cincinnati of ... • A New Resting Place for the Scattered Sons of Israel: A History of the
First Jewish Cemetery West of the Allegheny Mountains

    • Abstract: This special issue of Ohio Valley History celebrates two hundred years of Jewish community in Cincinnati. The founding of this community is traced to the 1821 establishment of Chestnut Street Cemetery in the city's West End neighborhood. Per Jewish custom, a cemetery is often the first institution the community establishes. As David Harris, executive director of Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Cincinnati, explains, "it shows the primacy of the commandment to honor the dead. That if you can't do that, you don't have the makings of a community."1 All other matters of the religion can be practiced without an organized space, but a cemetery must have land. Strict laws regarding burials and the care of cemeteries form an ... Read More

  • Seeing and Celebrating Jewish Life in the Ohio Valley

    • Abstract: This special issue helps celebrate the bicentennial of Cincinnati's Jewish community, which dates to the creation of the Chestnut Street Cemetery in 1821. That West End cemetery, now more visible and better interpreted than it has been in decades, represents the first organized Jewish presence in the city and reminds us how integral the Jewish story is to the story of the city as a whole. With this issue, Ohio Valley History gathers new scholarship on Cincinnati's Jews, not just at the community's founding but over the course of those two hundred years. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge the Jewish presence throughout the valley and invite scholars to help us learn more about Jews who made a home in ... Read More

  • Civil War Witnesses and Their Books ed. by Gary W. Gallagher and Stephen
           Cushman (review)

    • Abstract: Published in 2019, Gary W. Gallagher and Stephen Cushman's Civil War Writing: New Perspectives on Iconic Texts provides a collection of essays that explore, as the title suggests, landmark diaries and memoirs civilian and soldier participants or observers. Civil War Witnesses is a continuation of the literary tradition of the Civil War, offering a collection of eight essays, written by a solid line-up of historians that includes well-known individuals, like James Longstreet and Elizabeth Bacon Custer, as well as lesser-known or cited observers, like Maria Lydig Daly and Phoebe Yates Pember.Several essays in this volume consider familiar individuals and texts, among them Elizabeth Varon's essay on James ... • A Contest of Civilizations by Andrew F. Lang (review)

    • Abstract: As I read Andrew F. Lang's impressive A Contest of Civilizations, I was reminded of a recent observation by journalist Osita Nwanevu that Americans suffer from "main character syndrome"—the tendency to view themselves and their nation as the protagonists of history, no matter how peripheral their role. Lang's book takes the idea of American exceptionalism—that is, the notion that the United States has a special destiny and duty to serve as an international example of republican, democratic virtue—and examines its contradictory and schismatic history in the Civil War era. It is a study of competing visions for how that "main character" ought to behave.Lang traces the volatile career of American exceptionalism in ... Read More

  • The Cacophony of Politics by J. Matthew Gallman (review)

    • Abstract: The question with any Civil War book is whether it contributes anything new to our knowledge or understanding. J. Matthew Gallman makes flattering mention of his "brilliant" predecessor in writing on the Democratic Party, Joel Silbey, but Gallman states that he is "not attempting historiographic interventions here" (238, 10). He offers instead a group of "six core arguments" (11). These include reevaluating the standard labels of War and Peace (or Copperhead) Democrats; understanding the prevalence of politics, especially as revealed by women's interest in the subject; highlighting that events, location, race, and ethnicity affected partisanship; and acknowledging that civil liberties was an important issue. Of ... Read More

  • Beyond Slavery's Shadow by Warren Eugene Milteer Jr (review)

    • Abstract: In his Beyond Slavery's Shadow, Warren Milteer provides the first comprehensive study on free people of color in the American South since Ira Berlin's Slaves without Masters was published in 1974. A growing chorus of scholars has challenged Berlin's paradigm by exploring free people of color whose experiences in their local communities were better than simply slaves without masters. But where these scholars have drawn on differences between laws and free people of color's actual experiences within specific communities, Milteer acknowledges that some historians remain "unconvinced of the broad applicability of their conclusions" (11). It is precisely this challenge that he takes on with a wider focus that spans the ... Read More

  • Gideon Shryock by Winfrey P. Blackburn and R. Scott Gill (review)

    • Abstract: Gideon Shryock: His Life and Architecture, 1802–1880 makes a valuable contribution to the history of American architecture.
Authors Winfrey P. Blackburn and R. Scott Gill have written the first book-length monograph on the Kentucky-born architect and have rightfully placed Shryock in the architectural lineage of Benjamin Henry Latrobe and William Strickland. His two statehouses, in Frankfort, Kentucky (1827–30) and Little Rock, Arkansas (1832–42) helped Greek Revival become known as the American national styleThis is the third collaboration and the most ambitious for the writers. Blackburn, a native of Frankfort, is an attorney in Louisville with a penchant for Kentucky architecture. Gill has advanced degrees in ... Read More

  • Creating Our Shared Story: 200 Years of Jewish Cincinnati

    • Abstract: In 1821, the first Jewish cemetery in Cincinnati was established at the corner of Chestnut Street and Central Avenue.1 2021 began a yearlong celebration and commemoration of two hundred years of Jewish life in Cincinnati. Led by the Jewish Cincinnati Bicentennial Committee, every aspect of the celebration was a result of collaboration among numerous local groups, institutions, and individuals. A sample of the events included lectures, historical tours and exhibits, art and music, family fun opportunities, and cooking and genealogy lessons. It provided the perfect opportunity to delve into the rich history and culture of Cincinnati's Jewish community, while also anticipating the future. The bicentennial committee ... Read More
