  • Advertising Antiquity. Introduction

      Abstract: This is the introduction to the issue Advertising Antiquity. The contribution offers an overview of theoretical and methodological approaches to advertising as an encoded system of communication that can be studied from multiple angles and fields. The text looks at the social and cultural impact of advertising on modern societies, as well as at its different uses of the past and, specifically, of Classical Antiquity in connection to modern values, aspirations and identities. The introduction also includes a comparative insight into ancient forms of political and commercial advertising and provides a summary of the content of the issue and of themes and trends drawn in the individual contributions.

  • On show and on the go: The advertising language of Athenian pottery

      Abstract: In this paper, I discuss the surfaces of a fragmentary kylix at the University of Reading to highlight how the Leafless Group (ca. 510 - 480 BCE) was distinct from the Haimon Group, another large-scale producer of black-figured ceramics. With its distinctiveness, the Leafless Group defined and defended its brand, as well as its place in the vase market. Although the kylix bears figural decoration, a satyr and the eye motif, which may both point to the realm of the wine god Dionysos, here I have not treated these either as components of a pictorial narrative or as semiotic units that served the pot’s symbolism. Instead, I have understood the two images, regardless of whether or not they inter-related, as integral aspects of the pot’s visual impact, and of potters’ and painters’ efforts to brand their product in such a way that it made references both to the workshop (and its business model) and to other earlier and contemporary Athenian figured wares.

  • Vote for Hermes – Grabstelen als Werbetafeln

      Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to the study of Hellenistic grave stelai by comparing them to modern day, non-commercial billboard advertisements, such as election posters. The syncrisis shows that grave stelai not only had a private function for the remaining members of the family but also a “political” purpose as exemplification of the own social, economical and religious ideal. Both media show similarities by which the essay will be structured. They share characteristic settings hence they get only short attention. Furthermore they use similar iconographic strategies like the interaction of scripture and image, symbols and gesture. Taking the god Hermes as my central example, I argue that the grave stelai are a part of an intra-community discourse exemplary shown in rich seaports at the borders of the Greek world. In accordance with stelai election posters were made by a party to reach a group whose members identify themselves with the ideas of the party. Thus representations of Hermes were used to show the ideals of education, athletic competition, exemplary holding of public office, wealth and spending money for the community as well as the correct way of performing cult rituals. Der Beitrag bietet einen neuen Blick auf antike Grabstelen, indem diese mit modernen, nicht-kommerziellen Werbetafeln wie Wahlplakaten verglichen werden. Durch die Gegenüberstellung wird deutlich, dass die Grabstelen neben der privaten Funktion für die Hinterbliebenen auch eine „politische“ Funktion als Ausdruck des eigenen sozialen, ökonomischen und religiösen Lebensideals hatten. Entsprechend ist der Aufsatz anhand der Ähnlichkeiten beider Medien strukturiert. So sind die charakteristischen Aufstellungskontexte beider vergleichbar aus denen eine kurze Aufmerksamkeit resultiert. Zudem wird bei beiden auf gleiche ikonographische Strategien zurückgegriffen wie das Zusammenspiel von Schrift und Bild, Symbole und Gesten. Als zentrales Beispiel wurden Darstellungen des Gottes Hermes gewählt, weil hierdurch gezeigt werden kann, dass Grabstelen ein Teil des innergemeinschaftlichen Diskurses zum Beispiel in den reichen Hafenstädten an den Rändern der griechischen Einflusssphäre waren. Genau wie die Grabstelen werden auch Wahlwerbeplakate von einer Gemeinschaft, zumeist der Partei, entwickelt, um eine Gruppe von Wählern zu erreichen, die sich mit den Ideen der Partei identifiziert. Als Ergebnis lässt sich festhalten, dass Darstellungen des Hermes benutzt wurden, um die bürgerlichen Ideale der Ausbildung, des sportlichen Wettkampfes, der korrekten Amtsführung, des Reichtums und der Freigebigkeit im Sinne der Gemeinschaft sowie der regelmäßigen und korrekten Hinwendung an die Götter zu präsentieren.

  • Esthétique et fonction du corps antiquisant dans la publicité au
           XXIe siècle

      Abstract: L’Antiquité, qu’elle soit égyptienne, grecque ou romaine, est toujours présente dans la publicité des années 2000 et 2010. Un balayage rapide du corpus permet d’en repérer immédiatement des exemples, qui ont marqué l’histoire de la publicité ou les esprits : tous les trentenaires actuels se souviennent des gladiatrices Beyoncé, Pink et Britney Spears buvant du Pepsi dans un Colisée en folie. Les adolescents d’aujourd’hui ont été sensibles au charme antique des égéries de Paco Rabanne pour ses parfums Invictus et Olympéa. La liste peut être longue, citons également une publicité d’Orangina, dont l’action se situe elle aussi dans le Colisée, toute une série de spots de Ferrero Rocher dans lesquelles les dieux de l’Olympe dégustent les chocolats de l’ambassadeur, les parfums Kouros… À quelques exceptions près, le centre d’attention de ces publicités est, outre le produit vendu, la plastique de ses acteurs. C’est donc au travers du corps antique et de son esthétique que nous souhaitons questionner ce corpus. Il s’agira ensuite d’identifier les aspects symboliques du corps antique et les valeurs que cherchent à transmettre les publicitaires en le mettant en scène. Nous tenterons ensuite de déterminer si l’apparition d’internet et la disparition progressive de la culture classique des programmes éducatifs ont eu des conséquences sur la fonction de l’Antiquité dans la publicité. C’est donc au travers du corps antique et de son esthétique que nous souhaitons questionner ce corpus. Il s’agira ensuite d’identifier les aspects symboliques du corps antique et les valeurs que cherchent à transmettre les publicitaires en le mettant en scène. Nous tenterons ensuite de déterminer si l’apparition d’internet et la disparition progressive de la culture classique des programmes éducatifs ont eu des conséquences sur la fonction de l’Antiquité dans la publicité.

  • ‘Visit Greece and Live your Myth’. The Use of Classical Antiquity by
           the Greek National Tourism Organization

      Abstract: This paper examines the uses of Classical Antiquity in modern advertising through a revision of the posters and campaigns established by the Greek National Tourist Organization in the 20th and 21st centuries. The study shows how Greek tourism takes recourse to the notions of continuity and being the ‘cradle of Western civilization’ in order to promote the country as a destination brand. It also shows that Classical Antiquity is the key feature differentiating Greece from its competitors in the Mediterranean region. Images, texts and videos focus on ancient values such as hospitality, authenticity, and anthropocentrism, together with mythical, historical and artistic attributes, thus conveying a message of endurance and exceptionalism. As a result, uses of the past in Greek tourism prove to be a mirror of the current challenges to Greek national identity and Greece’s relationship to other countries.

  • Das antike Sparta und Kosmetikwerbung – Ideologie in der
           Cremedose'

      Abstract: Als Beispiel für den Einsatz der Antike in der Kosmetikwerbung wird die Präsentation der „Sparta Creme“, eines Produktes aus dem Hause der deutschen Parfümfirma 4711, untersucht. Durch den diachronen Vergleich der Anzeigenwerbung für dieses Produkt von 1934 bis 1954 zeigt sich die Abhängigkeit des Spartabildes vom jeweiligen Zeitgeist. In der Zeit des Nationalismus belegen die Umbenennung der „Allwettercreme“ in „Sparta Creme“ und die weitere Ausrichtung der Werbung –auf inhaltlicher Ebene die Bezugnahme auf das antike Sparta sowie auf bildlicher Ebene die Verweise auf antike Kunst – eine propagandistische Indienstnahme der Körperpflege für die Rasseideologie. Die mit Sparta, laut NS-Ideologie dem Idealtypos des „Rassestaates“, verbundenen Konnotationen bilden den idealen Bezugsrahmen auch in der Kosmetikwerbung: Der deutsche ‚Volkskörper‘ wird angepriesen, Frauen werden besonders als Mütter und zukünftige gesunde Mütter gesunder Kinder angesprochen, während Kinder als ‚Spartakrieger‘ auf ihre Rolle als Soldaten vorbereitet werden. Die Werbung der Nachkriegszeit hingegen sucht neue Wege, die vom martialischen Image des Produkts weg zur Bezugnahme auf die Antike als Chiffre für Luxus führen.

  • Homeric Hipsters

      Abstract: This paper investigates the use of Ancient Greek imagery in the marketing of male grooming products. Based on a case study of the cosmetics brand HOMMER, the paper analyses how elements such as scent and product ingredients combined with a visual profile and storytelling, provide consumers with elements for an experientially based identity creation. Based on psychological and archaeological theory, the athour argues that the intersection between product, advertising and consumer constitutes a play with identity and the potential for multisensory "time travel." By identifying the elements of a product poster, the visual narrative of a single product, a beard wipe, is shown to contain all the elements of the dominant Modern Greek national narrative and more, tying Greek notions of ancient and modern history to anglo-saxon sailor symbolism and the Neo-hipster phenomenon.

Dieser Beitrag berichtet über diese Lehrveranstaltung und beinhaltet eine Auswahl studentischer Arbeiten, die aus dem Seminar herkamen.
