  • Sport Expertise: How Proprioceptive Sensitivity Can Explain Talent

    • Authors: Ricardo Serrado
      Pages: 1 - 12
Abstract: Anyone who likes sports is easily impressed by the talent and rare ability of athletes like Lionel Messi, Roger Federer or Simone Biles. What these athletes do, in their respective domains, is so different from the others that many admirers of these sports consider that they have a divine, transcendent aura, as if they were superhumans endowed with special powers. How these athletes perform feats, actions and movements that most people cannot, even with more training time and more dedication, is a question that has worried scholars for several decades. In this article, we propose the concept of proprioceptive sensitivity as a way of explaining, in part, how and why certain athletes can manipulate and control balls, cars, rackets and sticks, among other objects, with extreme ease. This superior skill gives them advantages in decision making, allowing them to decide better and more easily than others and, subsequently, to achieve a unique performance in the scope of their sports. In short, we will propose that athletes with superior talent in their respective areas have a greater proprioceptive sensitivity, which allows them to establish a better relationship between their body and any object that they have to master in the context of their sport.

  • Cyborg-athletes, Pressurization and Integrity of Sport

    • Authors: Matija Škerbić, Ivana Greguric
      Pages: 22 - 39
Abstract: In the debate on cyborg-athletes in sport, rightly so, (un)fairness was the central point of consideration this far. However, with this paper, we make a claim that in cyborgization cases, together with (un)fairness, another problem should be considered as well - the pressure that cyborgization can put on other athletes, sporting communities and the integrity of sport. In order to make our case we will first critically examine notions of cyborg, cyborgization and cyborg-athletes; secondly, we will discuss the coercion argument and propose changing it into the pressurization argument; thirdly, we will critically examine the concept of integrity of sport; and finally, we will provide ethical guidelines for cyborgization of/in sports.
