  • Aristotle and Scientific Experiments
    • Authors: Christopher Byrne
      Pages: 527 - 537
Abstract: Many have argued that there is no room for experiments in Aristotle's natural science: experiments intervene in nature, but Aristotle holds that we must simply observe nature; if we intervened, the result would be something artificial or contrary to nature. Against this, I argue that Aristotle not only performed experiments, but also holds that there is much about nature that can be discovered experimentally.

À propos d'une démarche
           clandestine dans les Méditations
    • Authors: Georges Moyal
      Pages: 539 - 548

  • The Myth of a State of Intending
    • Authors: Devlin Russell
      Pages: 549 - 559
Abstract: Recent work by Joseph Raz, Niko Kolodny, and Sergio Tenenbaum suggest that there are no normative constraints peculiar to intentions as such. Such constraints are a myth. We can understand the rationality of intention without positing that intention is a mental state. I argue that, further, we can understand the descriptive nature of intention (i.e., its role in intrapersonal coordination) without positing that intention is a mental state. Such a posit is itself a myth. Instead, intention is an action with certain characteristic sub-actions that play a coordinating role.

  • Understanding the Welby-Russell Correspondence
    • Authors: Scott Metzger
      Pages: 579 - 588
Abstract: A shallow reading of the 1905 correspondence between Victoria Welby and Bertrand Russell yields the impression that Welby has misunderstood Russell's “On Denoting.” I argue that a deeper reading reveals that Welby should be understood, not as misunderstanding Russell, but as bringing a pragmatic attitude to bear on Russell's theory of descriptions in order to expose the limits of his strictly logical analysis.

  • Universality Without Normativity: Interpreting the Demand of Kantian
           Judgements of Taste
    • Authors: R. Kathleen Harbin
      Pages: 589 - 612
Abstract: Kant claims that we demand the agreement of others when making judgements of taste. I argue that this claim is part of an explanation of how the phenomenology of familiar aesthetic judgements supports his contention that judgements of taste are universal. Kant's aesthetic theory is plausible only if we reject the widespread contention that this demand is normative. I offer a non-normative reading of Kantian judgements of taste based on a close reading of the Analytic and Deduction, then argue against the three prominent normative interpretations, which force us to attribute to Kant a position that he did not accept.

  • Kant and the Demands of Normativity: Response to Harbin
    • Authors: Nicholas Dunn
      Pages: 613 - 619
Abstract: I argue against Harbin's claim that aesthetic judgements, for Kant, are not normative. By focusing on the systematic nature of Kant's Critical philosophy, I show that aesthetic judgements, like judgements in the theoretical and practical domains, must be normative, though such judgements display a distinct kind of normativity, which is expressed in their subjectivity, indeterminacy, and affectivity.

  • The Lawless Demand of Judgements of Taste: Response to Dunn
    • Authors: R. Kathleen Harbin
      Pages: 621 - 626
Abstract: I respond to Dunn's claim that aesthetic judgements must be normative for Kant by (I) clarifying my position: it is not the case that on my account the strength of the feeling of pleasure implies that others should agree with my judgement; instead, the disinterestedness of the feeling is the basis for agreement, (II) arguing against the claim that Kant's broader system requires normative judgements of taste, and (III) arguing against the suggestion that any operation of a faculty in accordance with a principle is normative.

  • Philippa Foot, l'utilitarisme et la promesse
    • Authors: Vincent Boyer
      Pages: 627 - 649

  • Fichte’s Certainty in the Spirit by the Letter
    • Authors: Antón Barba-Kay
      Pages: 651 - 676
Abstract: Fichte’s Jena writings sought to combine the apparently conflicting requirements of settling philosophy on scientific grounds and of respecting its character as a self-determined vocation. In reconciling these tasks, he understood himself to be faced at once with the meta-philosophical one of motivating the questions he addressed, the pedagogical one of adequately communicating his position, and the polemical one of accounting for the incomprehension of his adversaries. I show how these layers constitute Fichte’s response to the larger problem of specifying the relation between the rote ‘letter’ of a philosophical doctrine and the intersubjective ‘spirit’ of its communicability.

  • Gupta on Sellars’s Theory of Perception
    • Authors: Byeong D. Lee
      Pages: 701 - 724
Abstract: Recently, Anil Gupta raised several important objections against Wilfrid Sellars’s theory of perception. The purpose of this paper is to defend Sellars’s theory of perception against these objections. I admit that some aspects of his theory are problematic: for example, there are good reasons to reject Sellars’s view that the ultimate referent of a perceptual taking is a sense impression. Nonetheless, I argue that a Sellarsian account of perception is still a viable approach to perception, despite Gupta’s powerful objections.

           Physique VIII, 5, 256b8-13
    • Authors: Luca Gili; Laurence Godin-Tremblay
      Pages: 725 - 740
