  • Secrets and Watchers: A Markan Demonology

    • Authors: Christopher W. Peters
Abstract: Mark’s use of a secrecy motif is well known to commentators. This article explores the messianic secret by analyzing its most common violators, the demons of the Gospel of Mark. Mark’s various exorcism accounts function to provide a working demonology of the Evangelist, and this biblical theology is correlated with other extant Second Temple Period Jewish literature, primarily 1 Enoch and its Watchers tradition. Mark relies upon both Leviticus and the Book of Watchers to describe the function and identity of demons, explaining their own supernatural knowledge of the identity of Christ, knowledge which necessitates his commands to keep silent. This article analyzes each exorcism account in Mark, places them in their larger literary context, and provides a synthesis of Markan demonology and its relationship to the secrecy motif of the Gospel.

  • An Examination of Biblical Archaeology’s Impact on Exegetical and
Theological Method with Attendant Case Study

    • Authors: Donald C. McIntyre
Abstract: The chief concern of this paper is to examine how one can integrate archaeological data into the exegetical and theological processes so that one might profitably learn how to understand and rightly apply the text. This paper will argue that archaeology informs the exegetical process through providing historical and literary context to the study of the Bible when properly understood, and that it can also be useful in the theological process as one seeks to rightly integrate illumination from other sources. After an analysis of how archaeology can be rightly integrated in the exegetical and theological processes the paper will assess the profits and dangers of archaeological integration offering a current case study exemplifying the risks of integrating archaeological findings in the exegetical and theological processes from William Lane Craig's most recent work on the Historical Adam.

  • An Evaluation of 2 Peter as a Testament

    • Authors: Joel Thomas
Abstract: The authorship of 2 Peter is one of the most disputed areas of NT studies. There are many facets to this issue. This paper will address the contention by many scholars that 2 Peter is testamentary in nature and is therefore pseudepigraphal. The various testamentary genres will be analyzed for characteristics, and then those characteristics will be compared to 2 Peter to determine whether 2 Peter is testamentary in nature and the likelihood that it is pseudepigraphal. The conclusion of this study is 2 Peter does not meet the characteristics of any testamentary genre and that it is in fact quite possibly and decretal form of letter as argued by Danker.

  • Algorithmic Manipulation: How Social Media is Shaping our Theology

    • Authors: Ethan Jago
Abstract: The average individual in Generation Z spends nine hours a day on social media and derives over 62% of the information retained from social applications such as YouTube and Instagram. Social media applications are designed to track and adapt a user's activity to custom-tailor their internet experience resulting in a controlled, one-sided view of the information flow custom-tailored to an individual's usage, which subtly changes the disposition concerning the interpretation of theological and biblical truths. The algorithm of social media responds adapts and directly impacts individuals in what they think, purchase, and places they visit. Social media is not neutral in its approach to sway opinion and to mislead Christian doctrine. The impact and misleading of influencers on social media platforms directly affect the cognitive functions of Christians regarding critical thinking for acceptance of the following, acceptance into the sub-culture of social media, driven by the need for uniqueness and individuality. The invasion and permeation of non-orthodox beliefs and heretical views of Christian theology spread from individual-to-individual leaving doubt regarding one's epistemology on Scriptural truth claims.

  • The Reconciliation of Future Israel in Romans 9–11

    • Authors: Kent T. Maitland
Abstract: This paper contends that supersessionism does not adequately understand the soteriological concept of reconciliation as it applies specifically to Israel because it does not correctly understand the apostolic hermeneutic. Reconciliation refers to the ending of hostility between two parties, which encompasses the removal of the root cause of the enmity in order to effect a change in their relationship from “enemy” to “friend.” While reconciliation describes the work of salvation accomplished in Christ for all humanity, it takes on additional significance when applied to Israel. In Romans 9–11, Paul highlights Israel’s enmity with God, God’s provision for removing the enmity’s root cause, and the future reconciliation of Israel as a nation by incorporating specific prophecies and OT language. Romans 10:18–21 reflects Israel’s state of enmity in her failure to heed the words of inspired Scripture concerning God’s intent to provoke her to jealousy through the salvation of the Gentiles, and 9:30–33 reflects the persistence of enmity in her failure to accept Christ, the stumbling block that was also foretold. Romans 10:4–13 highlights God’s provision for the removal of enmity in Christ with the installation of faith as a new redemptive-historical paradigm. Romans 11:25–27 highlights a future time when reconciliation will be accomplished on a national scale for Israel when the Messiah redeemer comes in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

  • Three Reasons To Praise The Creator from Psalm 8: A Biblical Theology with
           Attention to Intertextuality

    • Authors: Donald McIntyre
Abstract: Psalm 8 serves as the first creation hymn of the Psalter, and as such is worthy of an exegetical and theological analysis. This analysis will begin with an exegesis of the text, since exegesis rightfully precedes theologizing.[1] The exegesis will include a translation, examination of the historical and literary contexts, the genre classification, structure, and discussion of the literary features with special attention given to parallelism and conclude with a brief exposition. After the requisite exegetical analysis has been completed, a theological synthesis will be commenced progressing from the psalms location in its microstructural setting to its use in the New Testament before giving some concluding remarks about systematic usefulness. It is the goal of this examination to invoke praise from the reader so that they too might join in worship of the Creator יהוה for His special relationship with His vice-regent– mankind.[1] Ken Gardoski. “Steps to Doing Theology.” Clarks Summit, PA: Unpublished Class Notes from Doctoral Seminar TH1: Seminar in Theological Methods at Baptist Bible Seminary, Fall, 2020.

  • What Does the Euthyphro Dilemma Reveal about the Nature of Allah'

    • Authors: Sherene N. Khouri
Abstract: In their book, Good God: The Theistic Foundations of Morality, David Baggett & Jerry Walls discuss the nature of the God of Christianity by studying the Euthyphro dilemma. This paper shall follow Louise Antony, Walls, and Baggett’s model of the Euthyphro dilemma (Divine Command Theory) and uses it as an objective moral standard to study the nature of the theistic concept of divinity in Islam. After explaining the Euthyphro dilemma and making the distinction between voluntarism and extreme voluntarism. I shall argue that morality (what is good, right, bad, wrong, or evil) can easily be compromised on the extreme voluntarist view, unless it is constrained by the good nature of Allah. But, once the voluntarist nature of Allah is combined with some particular names/attributes (i.e., Ad-Ḍar and Al-Muḍil, Al-Mutakkabir, Al-Muntaqim, and Al-Qahar) and moral commands (i.e., Holy war, mutᶜa marriage, and adult breastfeeding), the morality of Allah is drastically compromised.

  • Junia as a Female Apostle in Romans 16:7 : A Literature Review of Relevant
           Sources from 2010 to Present

    • Authors: Matt H. Hamilton
Abstract: Ever since Bernadette Brooten’s seminal article in 1977, there has been a heated (and sometimes violent) debate over the identity and function of Junia(s) in Rom. 16:7. While recent years have seen tentative consensus in certain areas, such an outlook belies the deep and nuanced arguments which still exist. This essay will attempt to address a hole in the literature, namely a comprehensive review of the Junia debate since 2010. It will do this by cataloguing the discourse into four categories: the Name-Gender Debate, the Syntax-Grammar Debate, the Rhetoric-Context Debate, and the Apostleship Debate. After this analysis, comments will be given on the state of the discussion, as well as questions for further research. A new theme or direction for the Junia debate can be identified, which is that of reconciliation.

  • An Old Testament Biblical Theology of Wilderness: From Simple Setting to
           Cosmic Context

    • Authors: Wesley Nottingham
Abstract: Initially, wilderness may seem to be a concept of little significance in the Old Testament apart from acting as the setting for various events. However, as the Old Testament advances, wilderness becomes a place of vital importance as it is described in cosmic and eschatological language. The narratives within Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy do not form wilderness as a biblical motif in its own right. Rather, they lay the foundation for such a formation to take place later in Scripture. The Pentateuch teaches us that wilderness is to be understood as a place of both divine provision and national formation but also a place of rebellion and judgment. Not only this, but as the overarching characteristic of wilderness, the Pentateuch submits the location as a testing ground for the people of God. There is a historical pattern set in the Pentateuch concerning the wilderness that later pericopes like the Prophets pick up and develop. Building upon the wilderness as a place of rebellion in the Pentateuch, prophets like Ezekiel and Isaiah symbolically suggest that the wilderness is a place of chaos where sin and judgment reign. This becomes a cosmic reality, not simply a past Israelite experience. Incredibly, it is not God’s plan to allow the wilderness to remain a cosmic place of chaos, but by His grace and power, the Lord intends to transform it into an Edenic place where people can experience God’s presence. The rejuvenated wilderness is where God plans to gather His people to then guide them into the new exodus. What began as a mundane place of sand, rock, and rebellion has now become a glorious place of restoration.

    • Authors: Sherene Nicholas Khouri
Abstract: John C. Peckham, Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture, Baker Academic, 2021. ISBN 9781540961259. 336 pages. $29.99.Peckham’s latest book, Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture is a study in theology proper, which deals with God’s nature and attributes.
