  • Love, friendship, and moral motivation.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The love that we feel for our friends plays an essential role in both our moral motivation to act towards them; and in our moral obligations towards them, that is, in our special duties. We articulate our proposal as a reply to Stephen Darwall’s second-person proposal, which we take to be a contemporary representative of the Kantian view. According to this view, love does not have a necessary role neither in moral motivation, nor in moral obligation; just a complementary one. Yet this proposal faces three difficulties: a psychological problem, a practical problem, and a theoretical problem. In contrast, we argue that both moral motivation, and moral obligations emerge from our interpersonal relations with particular others. We further argue that obligations in the context of friendship are moral because they come with a feeling of obligation and have been internalized. Thus, the three problems raised to the Kantian position are clarified, and the role of love is emphasized in both our moral motivation, and our moral obligations towards friends. • Limits of the concept of altruism: Individualism, Batson’s theory of
altruism, and a social realist alternative.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We explore an important psychological domain wherein the ideology of individualism seems to be a counterintuitive source of bias: Altruism theory and research. After highlighting the powerful assumptions of ontological and methodological individualism for psychological research generally, we consider the specific ramifications of individualism for a prominent psychological account of other-benefitting motivation. We focus on the deficits and limitations that individualistic bias imposes on Batson’s theory of altruistic motivation and the ways this bias undermines his project. Most importantly, the rigid self-other distinction entailed by individualism renders Batson’s notion of altruism too rarified to be accessible or interpretable in the context of ordinary life and social relationships. Rejecting the reality of social arrangements—by adopting the individualistic assumption that social arrangements are mere constellations of individuals—restricts him to an impoverished depiction of other-benefiting motivation. Finally, the individualistic assumption that monadic individuals act primarily based on egoistic motives blinds him to the crucial role of social ties in motivating other-benefiting. We proffer an alternative to individualist portrayals of other-benefiting by drawing on a social realist perspective that emphasizes the centrality of relationships to better explain the well-documented ubiquity of other-benefiting. • Making of a crisis: The political and clinical implications of
           psychology’s globalization.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This article examines how the discipline of Psychology creates certain forms of crises, often in the service of fundamentalism and neoliberal capitalism. We trace Psychology’s neoliberal allegiances in order to show how uncritical psychologization, through the dual process of interiorization and individualization, has contributed to a re-interpretation of the Kashmiri Pandit refugee crisis in India. The discourse of the Psy-disciplines, most uniquely trauma theory, retroactively re-created the experience of Kashmiri Pandits, and reproduced conditions leading to increased Islamophobia across the nation. The article then explores how similar processes are reflected and negotiated in clinical practice, and how unthinking utilization of psychological discourse can overpower the therapeutic space to reproduce its own ideology at the cost of the client’s experience and priorities. These investigations are done via a self-reflective analysis undertaken by the two authors, Ayurdhi Dhar (AD) and Sugandh Dixit (SD), in their respective areas of expertise: the re-narrativization of the Kashmiri exodus and Psychology’s clinical recuperation of the experience of early orphan-hood, respectively. It is then suggested that in exporting Euro-American theories of trauma, ideas of health, concepts of healing, and values such as resilience and individual responsibility, Psychology intentionally or unintentionally creates certain forms of internal crisis through retroactive meaning-making. We then propose the concept of aproductive suffering, a meaning (less) form of distress which acts as revolutionary practice and as an antidote to this recuperation. • Epistemological foundations of humanistic psychology’s approach to
           the empirical.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This article challenges the myriad criticisms of humanistic psychology’s scientific status by directly confronting their common underlying claim: that humanistic psychology lacks an adequately empirical epistemological underpinning. Aristotelian epistemology is shown to be foundational to humanistic psychology’s approach to the empirical in contradistinction to the tradition of positivistic empirical psychology, the epistemological roots of which lie primarily in atomism. Core characteristics of humanistic psychology’s approach to the empirical are explicated from an account of Aristotelian epistemology as revived and elaborated by St. Thomas Aquinas. The explication is brought to fruition by way of an illustration using Edmund Husserl, one of humanistic psychology’s primary progenitors, as an example. The analyses herein find humanistic psychology’s empirical epistemological underpinning to emphasize (a) the confluence of the a priori and a posteriori; (b) the qualitative structure of knowledge; (c) formative meaning bestowal; (d) situated knowing; (e) intentional, presentational grounding; (f) imaginative presence to phenomena; (g) intuitive insight into essences; and (h) bracketing the naturalistic assumptions of positivistic empirical psychology.
