Abstract This article examines a little explored stage in the history of the Chilean poster which coincides chronologically with the so-called Golden age of artistic European poster. It is interested in discovering signs of the influence of the work of the French Jules Chéret in original posters or in those reproduced in local illustrated magazines, in the context of the birth of the artistic poster in the country.

  • Revista Mensaje y Rafael Sánchez: aproximaciones al
           documental universitario chileno

Abstract This article seeks to delineate the active role played by the Catholic Church and its guidelines on cinematography, in the renewal of the Chilean documentary in the 50’s and 60’s. In particular, the work of assimilation and dissemination of this ideology, carried out by a group of Jesuit priests responsible for the writing of Mensaje magazine and its gravitation in university documentary production, promoted by Rafael Sánchez at the Film Institute of the Universidad Católica de Chile, from 1955. This paper examines these guidelines, and their possible effects in two specific areas of interest: the reflection and dissemination of the positions of the Catholic Church on the cinema in the Mensaje magazine, and in the field of cinematographic practice, expressed in the documentary production of Rafael Sánchez.

Abstract A practical application of the concept of Pathosformeln, coined by Aby Warburg, is proposed in literary studies, as a link between representative and visual images, mental images originating from literary descriptions, and the emotions they communicate. A corpus of eight Latin American chronicles is chosen, from modernist to the 21st century, whose theme is transvestite prostitution, with an emphasis on the exacerbation of the femininity of its protagonists and the point of view of the narrators in this regard, resorting to the concept of gender performativity according to Judith Butler. Through a comparative analysis of the representations of the transvestite prostitute in the texts, the applicability of the concept is discussed, as well as the differences with its use in the field of the visual arts.

Abstract In 1980s Buenos Aires, the HIV/AIDS virus was called “the pink plague” and qualified by the Church as “a just divine punishment”, while the stigma fell on the sick. This qualitative research investigates the impact of HIV/AIDS on the Buenos Aires underground and the ways in which artists collectively dealt with the virus and with young death, in the absence of a cure. These approaches allow us to account for the singular character of the celebratory wakes that took place in the face of the AIDS crisis within the Buenos Aires artistic community. Through the case of the actor Batato Barea, we will investigate the meanings attributed to these funeral rituals by his friends and relatives. In addition, we will analyze the characteristic imprint of these rituals that sought to preserve the effective integrity and to vindicate different ways of living. Both features are distinctive with respect to other collective ways of facing death in the funerals of the activist group ACT-UP, carried out in the United States and Europe.

Abstract This article presents a review of the work of María Luisa Bemberg with a focus on the film Yo, la peor de todas (1990). With the semiotic and aesthetic analysis of the visual, sound and symbolic elements of the film, it seeks to show the tensions it produced regarding sexuality and gender, as well as the power and historical processes of its present. Rather than being an article driven by a single guiding hypothesis, it seeks to explore the proliferation of meanings of the work. In this way, the figures of reclusion, the desire between women and the disease are the approaches that are applied to perceive a cinema in which the historical conditions of women emerge.

Abstract This letter to Pêro Vaz de Caminha, the first Portuguese explorer to reach Brazil, presents the transformations that have taken place since the arrival of the Portuguese to the land until today. The text synthesizes the trajectory of destruction and violence stemming from the process of colonization, above all against indigenous peoples, peoples of African descent, and traditional communities.

Abstract In this essay I return to narratives about the popular uprisings of June 2013 in Brazil, considering that these discourses are still directly and indirectly present in the ways in which we understand our current reality, above all the ascension of the rightwing and our possible resistance to the growing and multiple fascist elements in our society today. I analyze certain current positions related to punitive and conservative reactions to the popular protests, which end up concluding that the uprisings generated “an even greater evil”. I bring to light some premises hidden in these statements which, by operating from points of view that are both historical and philosophical, not only compromise our past, but also mortgage our future.

  • Genealogia discursiva do bolsonarismo

Abstract This article offers a map of the discursive conditions that generated a far-right movement capable of winning the Brazilian presidential elections. The article argues that far from being an aberration, a product of chance or the becoming-fascist of tens of millions of Brazilians, Bolsonarism is profoundly embedded in the country’s recent history, including Lula’s period. The article also presents the composition of the political blocks that make up Bolsonarism: the party of cattle, the theocratic party, the party of order, the party of the market, and the party of trolls.

Abstract This article describes the recente history of the Brazilian economy, tracing the trajectory followed from the Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s administration to the present moment, including the years of government of the Worker’s Party, highlighting its social policies and their effects. The main thread of the article is the economic policy pursued by different federal administration in the past two decades. Since 2013, however, a series of political and economic earthquakes have dramatically shaken the country. The pandemic occurs precisely when the Brazilian economic management is in the hands of the most disqualified federal administration in our modern history.

  • Reactionary Populism in Power: an Ideological X-ray of the Bolsonaro
           Presidency (2018-2021)

This article attempts to present an X-ray of reactionary populism in power by describing how several ideological elements of Brazilian and international political culture that have gathered by the far rightwing movement led by Jair Bolsonaro. The authors hark back to the politological debate on right-wing populism and conclude with an analysis of bolso- narismo as “lulismo in reverse” [às avessas].

This is an article transcribed by Adriana Ramos from Ailton Krenak’s conversation with Eurico Vianna, which took place on May 19, 2021, under the title “The post pandemic world we would like to construct”. The text articulates the experience of the Krenak people after the destruction of the Doce river by the mining industry with the author’s reflections on the condition of human and non-human living beings in the world today.

  • Development, Environment, Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities
in Brazil today: a Perspective from Public Anthropology

Abstract The article presents an anthropological understanding of recent transformations in Brazilian socio-environmental policy and arena, with an emphasis on the social effects of national development projects on territorial (and other) rights of indigenous peoples and traditional communities. It is an attempt to understand the country’s recent political situation based on the production of the commissions of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology, specifically its Committee on Traditional Peoples, Environment and Large Projects – understood as a peculiar locus of knowledge production and political advocacy. It demonstrates, through the evidence that those chapters of ABA offer, that the attacks against the environmental legislation and the rights of indigenous peoples and traditional communities are not a recent phenomenon.

  • The Amazon under Bolsonaro

Abstract In a little over two years of the Jair Bolsonaro administration, questions related to the Amazon, to the environment, and to indigenous peoples have come to the fore among the themes that have mobilized the opposition to the government, both in national and international civil society campaigns as well as in struggles taking place in Congress and in lawsuits in the Supreme Court. In this article, I point out some of these moments, highlighting the history of the president's positions on some of these questions. I demonstrate how his visions contrasts starkly with the premises of most international treaties, with the foundations of Brazil's constitution, with scientific consensus, and with the policies implemented in the country in the past thirty years. The analysis of his anti-environmental policies for the Amazon makes it inevitable to treat the role of the Armed Forces in his government, even though many of the aspects involved still remain to be addressed.

Abstract At the end of dictatorship in Brazil, it launched redemocratization. The Constitution of 1988 reinforced civil rights and introduced collective rights of indigenous peoples and other peoples, rights on the environment and culture. The present work analyzes the application of the rights of the pueblos and the nature, dividing them between three periods. The first, since the promulgation of the Constitution, in 1988, until the election of Lula da Silva and his investiture in 2003. The second, represented by the government of Lula and Dilma Rousseff, from 2003 to 2016, a period marked by a contradictory development with collective rights. The third period, from 2016, to destroy the Constitution.

Abstract The realization that there is a process of transnationalization of the Brazilian prison-based criminal group self-named First Command of the Capital (PCC, by the acronym in Portuguese) can only be understood as an effect of the practices, forms of operation, activities, and configurations taken by criminal networks within the structural changes associated with globalization, particularly the dynamics of the illicit markets for cocaine and marijuana. Understanding PCC's process of transnationalization entails considering the specificities of a group that has its origins in prisons and the particularities of the Brazilian criminal dynamic, in the center of which prisons occupy an increasingly important place.

Abstract The interdisciplinary analysis of today's Brazilian drug policy, marked by its prohibitionist character, points to a blurred difference of treatment between drug users and traffickers before the law, and difficulties in the access of illegal substances for medical use, without restricting profits of the great traffickers of drugs, nor reducing the drugs consumption or commerce. Moreover, the model of public security is prone to identify Black and poor people as potentially criminal. Therefore, from a critical perspective, this article aims to propose paths to overcome the problems identified.

Abstract From an epistemological standpoint that is a feminist, intersectional and decolonial, this article reflects upon what Brazil's system of penal justice has been in the past decades, in continuity with what Brazil has always been for black women over the centuries.

Abstract The growing practices of religious intolerance defy the State's lay character. I therefore question (1) the arguments presented by the Supreme Court not to recognize or make accountable Christians’ evangelizing discourse that manifests itself as hate speech; (2) why the constitutional criteria recognized to characterize racial hate speech have not been applied in coherent and integral fashion in the trial that dealt with evangelization and religious hate speech; (3) under what arguments hate speech against religions of African matrix can be considered religious racism; (4) what other dimensions religious racism takes in Brazilian society; (5) how religious racism manifests itself as cultural appropriation and environmental racism.

In this article, we argue that Brazil's foreign policy has no longer been guided by the country's long-term objectives and interests, in view of the global possibilities, but by the immediate domestic circumstances. We identify three major stages in this process, coinciding with the strategies of the specific administrations: (1) retraction, in which president Dilma Rousseff sought to lower the Brazilian status of emerging power to that of middle power; (2) normalization, in which president Michel Temer sought to guarantee the legitimacy and survival of his fragile transitional government by strengthening the trade agenda, with a view to the country's economic recovery; (3) redefinition, in which president Jair Bolsonaro sought to reposition Brazil as a Christian and conservative nation by substantiating the country's international objectives to the new correlation of forces that came to power in 2018.

  • Notes on Evangelical Christianity, Violent Sociability, and Rio de
           Janeiro's Urban Periphery

Abstract This article presents some considerations about Brazil's current social and political context by emphasizing a perspective that takes into account the importance of urban peripheries in the country's social life. I consider the presence and influence of evangelical Christianity –in demographic, cultural, and political ascension– as well as new patterns of sociability constituted and disseminated from the social dynamic that stem from the violent conflicts between police and military forces and factions of organized crime (particularly those linked with illegal drug trafficking and paramilitary militias) as indispensable explanatory vectors to understand the country's contemporary social reality. I read these vectors from the point of view of my (auto)ethnographic as a teacher in the Complexo do Chapadão, in the periphery of Rio de Janeiro.

  • Transformações do futebol brasileiro no século XXI

Abstract This article analyzes the political and artistic context of Brazilian football. I attempt to understand how football became a true national passion, encompassing all social classes, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. I present the Brazilian national team from its heyday – with memorable players such as Pelé, Garrincha, Rivelino, Ronaldo Fenômeno, and Ronaldinho Gaúcho – to its downfall, marked by its transformation into a team of average technical quality. I argue that such downfall is related to the lack of investment in the formation and maintenance of players in Brazil, as they emigrate ever earlier after being sold to foreign teams, particularly in the European continent.

  • What Comes after the End' Directions and Contradictions of the
           Brazilian Rap

Abstract By breaking with the bases of national imaginary representation that gave MPB a symbolic and ideological sense, rap makes the dissolution of the symbolic cultural horizon which guided part of Brazilian society it's starting point. What to MPB represented a deep crisis –to the point where composer Chico Buarque affirmed that the song template that his generation had consolidated probably had come come to an end – that´s the starting point of national rap. In this way, rap's get to change into an artistic form that what Brazil effectively had assumed as a political project: a real extermination in the open field, that has the production and management of violence as it's decisive aspect. This article is an attempt to follow the developments of this peripheral survival model from its consolidation to its most recent developments.

  • On the Borders of the Human and the Non-Human: Poetics of Nature in 20th
           Century Brazilian Literature

Abstract To what extent are non-human alterities inscribed into contemporary Brazilian literature' How have some Brazilian writers dealt with the paradoxical relations between humanity and animality, as well as with ethno-ecological problems proper to our time' This article addresses the presence of non-human beings in works by Nicanor Sena, Astrid Cabral, Olga Savary, Sérgio Medeiros and Josely Vianna Baptista, in the light of a transdisciplinary theoretical framework that includes thinkers such as Ailton Krenak, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, Dominique Lestel and Donna Haraway. The article also deals with the cultural and textual hybridity that cuts through the works of some authors of our literary repertoire. I thereby show how they present a liminal nature, with a strong transnational bent, as they are shot through by mythological and zoological elements, indigenous legends, diverse literary references, and different geographical and linguistic spaces.

  • Alterity, Fiction, and Resistance. Against the “Mineral
           Destiny” of the World

Abstract This essay attempts to rethink the human sciences from the idea of spirit proper to the peoples of the Amazon. To do this, I will give an account of contemporary Brazilian critical thinking (academic and non-academic), which assumes alterity and the environmental crisis as central axes of its reflections, to later articulate them to an idea of human sciences that take as an object not the human, but the living.

  • Between Bombs and Firecrackers: Brazilian Poetry after June of 2013

Abstract The June 2013 protests happened spontaneously all over Brazil, starting an era of deep political polarization and creating a social and cultural legacy in the following years. This article aims to comprehend and analyze the national poetry scene since then, searching traces of those events in recently published poems. To do so, it sought to dive into two different unrelated universes: slam poetry and the so-called “traditional poetry”, using as a resource the work of poets such as Luz Ribeiro, Paulo Ferraz and Pádua Fernandes.
