  • When "Power" Masquerades as "Care"

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We have become a singularly confessing society…. [The confession] plays a part in justice, medicine, education, family relationships, and love relations, in the most ordinary affairs of everyday life, and in the most solemn rites: one confesses one's crimes, one's sins, one's thoughts and desires, one's illnesses and troubles; one goes about telling, with the greatest precision, whatever is most difficult to tell…. One confesses—or is forced to confess. This is an observation made decades before all the changes that information and communication technology have brought about in our social and personal lives lately. With the impositions of the current pandemic scenario added, we have now literally become confessing ... Read More

  • It's All about the Benjamins!

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Whenever I feel bad, I go to the library and read controversial periodicals. Though I do not know whether I am a liberal or a conservative, I am nevertheless enlivened by the hatred which one bears the other. In fact, this hatred strikes me as one of the few signs of life remaining in the world.hatred as a sign of life. We've seen a lot of this in the last year, in the last four to five years, in fact. So much hatred that people were willing to risk their lives rather than wear a mask to protect themselves (and others) from COVID-19.So much hatred against them … against the other … against those others. If nothing else, this past year made strikingly visible the divides that exist in the United States, and yet the ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: my back is to a life passed. A year, maybe more, in liminal space. Waiting. For a vaccine. For better therapeutics. For a political climate to shift. All the while, the actual climate turns against us.The waters rise in the East. Fires rage in the West.My back is to a life passed. Retirement, just before the pandemic. Post-retirement and lockdown, simultaneous. A turn to a writing life—solitary, self-directed, coming at a time when my options are limited. My go-to places for connection and inspiration—museums, coffeehouses, lectures, and readings—all off-limits. The natural world, my cathedral, also inaccessible. The fires rage, and the air is unbreathable.Over morning coffee, in our quiet house, the windows shut ... Read More

  • Time in the Time of COVID

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: i was 76 when the pandemic began. I'm 78 now; I'll be 79 when, God willing, it officially ends. I was (and might be again) a practicing, practical, pragmatic musician; the pandemic forced the adoption of a new identity. And that identity was younger than the last. How can that be' At a superficial level, it came about because I was forced into modes of behavior that are commonplace among persons born after, say, 1980, but were utterly new to me. I activated a Twitter account, I started watching videos on YouTube, I listened to music online, and more. Previously, I had unwittingly endorsed a narrow definition of artistic experience—one that I had cultivated through many years of devoted attention to embodied ... Read More

  • A Critique of Philosophical Shamanism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: among anthropologists, there is a fierce controversy over the figure of the shaman, with some reserving the term for practitioners in hunter-gatherer societies in present-day Siberia (among whom the term originated), and others defining shaman more broadly to include any figure performing similar functions, from prehistory until today.1 Though the exact nature of these functions (and whether there is one, and only one, figure who performs them) is central to this controversy, the majority view is helpfully summarized by Russian anthropologist Anna Kuznetsova. She schematizes the Siberian shaman according to the following four attributes: (1) divine election involving dreams, (2) initiation through sickness and ... Read More

  • The Magical Santayanan Groundwork for Metaphysical Coherentism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: There is a tension in Santayana's ontological system, one that is generated by the interactions of his (1) doctrine of existence, (2) doctrine of systematization, and (3) critical agnosticism on the infinity of material substance. From (1) and (2), in conjunction with what will be called the expansionist postulate, an infinite material expansion is generated, one that is in conflict with (3). This tension is remediated by a coherentist proposal regarding Santayanan existence, the relevant feature of which is that existents at distinct orders of organization are in symmetrical dependence relations. "Metaphysical coherentism," which has recently been described as "one of the least explored areas in contemporary ... Read More

  • COVID Reflections

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: elaine and i were in mexico city following the 2020 meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. From our Airbnb, we walked everywhere—to El Zocalo, to museums and restaurants, and through neighborhoods. We followed the news of increasing concern about the COVID outbreak in Europe and the United States, but it seemed like news from a distant planet. Until we flew home, that is, and the airport was deserted. My college paused classes after Spring break, and the NCAA basketball tournament was canceled—that is when we knew it was serious. My father was released from the hospital after a brain biopsy on March 17, and we drove to Pennsylvania from Kentucky. The highway was deserted, the food and ... Read More

  • How to Become a Philosopher from the (dis)Comfort of Your Own Home

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: gun violence has been on the rise again lately. Trapped indoors, we had enjoyed a long period without it. People were dying from something else. We're all always dying, of course. Heidegger describes us as being-toward-death (Sein-zum-Tode). Each of us is only traveling in one direction—toward the end. That end has snuck up on hundreds of thousands of people over the last fifteen months. But there was a particular end that resonated with me; it was George Floyd's death that transformed me into a philosopher. When we received word that The University of Texas at Dallas campus was officially closing in recognition of the pandemic, I was pursuing a PhD in Literature and teaching an undergraduate writing course. The ... Read More

  • Caring about Other People

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: during july 2020—eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic, and four months after the first US stay-at-home orders—a metaphorically viral quote misattributed to Dr. Anthony Fauci spread across social media: "I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people." This line encapsulated the frustration of those willing to sacrifice personal autonomy to limit the spread of COVID-19 and highlighted a consistent individualist tension in US culture. How consistent this tension is can be seen by tracing the origin of the phrase; first, to the title of a June 2017 Huffington Post article by Kayla Chadwick. This article concerns the political debates leading up to the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Acts ... Read More

  • Pandemic Response: A Reflection on Disease and Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: the global pandemic caused by the spread of a novel coronavirus in early 2020 did more than transform the first one-and-a-quarter academic year that fell within its duration. It also transformed higher learning in its research and pedagogy. Like many misfortunes, COVID-19 has brought opportunity for growth and change. No doubt, there are many success stories of philosophers rising to the challenges of our time. In this contribution, I relate my own pandemic story, not as one of success, but rather as a humble attempt to grapple with the question of the post-pandemic philosophy curriculum. What is the place of philosophy in the twenty-first-century university' What might "philosophy" mean in a post-pandemic context ... Read More

  • Pragmatist Hope during COVID-19

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: as covid-19 set in, many people struggled to find or hold onto hope. TIME magazine devoted its entire annual TIME 100 Most Influential People issue to the very topic, offering up suggestions on how to find hope, from religious leaders, politicians, and celebrities (TIME magazine). While some presented helpful ideas, I found myself seeking more satisfying and sustaining answers. I turned to pragmatist philosophers, both old and new, to help me understand what hope is, why it matters, and how to foster it.Intriguingly, classic American pragmatists seem to have much to contribute to discussions of hope and yet have actually said very little explicitly about it. Even as pragmatism complemented the late nineteenth- and ... Read More

  • Pragmatism, Peirce, and the Pandemic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: as a critical thinking instructor, the coronavirus pandemic has been (hopefully) a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to observe how people weigh evidence, assess risk, and make value decisions. From the micro level of daily individual habits to the macro level of our species' global response, every scale of our lives has required some degree of adaptation to this crisis. Unfortunately, my training and profession do not guarantee that my decisions and behavior are any better than yours. I am as fallible as anyone, but perhaps my background has provided me with more tools for coping with doubt. I am especially grateful to be a scholar of American pragmatism, as their commitments to fallibilism, scientific inquiry, and ... Read More

  • Domesticating: A Meditation on Self-Reliance

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: travel, emerson often insisted, is only for the fool-hearted. He said it so many times in his popular essays and public lectures, he had actually gained a reputation for it.[It] is a fool's paradise. Our first journeys discover to us the indifference of places. At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can be intoxicated with beauty, and lose my sadness. I pack my trunk, embrace my friends, embark on the sea, and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me is the stern fact, the sad self, unrelenting, identical, that I fled from. I seek the Vatican, and the palaces. I affect to be intoxicated with sights and suggestions, but I am not intoxicated. My giant goes with me wherever I go.("Self-Reliance" 278) ... Read More

  • Temporal Disorientation and Sentimental Time

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: acknowledgment of a global pandemic in March 2020 and subsequent containment policies disrupted routines. Violent suppression of anti-racists and ongoing state-sanctioned killings in the United States made and continue to make plain the precariousness of justice. The disruption, violence, and uncertainty have resulted in strange, disturbing, and disorienting experiences of time, leading some to describe time as distorted and elastic.I have repeatedly forgotten what day it is and sometimes, upon being reminded of the month, had the shocking sense of weeks suddenly gone. After months of intentional practice, I have become better able to recall details of the recent past. Indistinct collections of days no longer fade ... Read More

  • An Independent Scholar during the Pandemic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: after retiring from the practice of law in 2010, I pursued my love of philosophy. I have had the good fortune to become involved with the scholarly philosophical community, to write a small number of reviews and articles, and to present papers for conferences of the Josiah Royce Society, the APA, and the Metaphysical Society of America. As it did for so many, the pandemic led me to a time of increased solitude and reflection. I wanted to think philosophically about American democracy and its ideals as the country struggled both with the pandemic and with widespread dissension and anger. The Pluralist's call for papers inviting its readers to explore their philosophical lives during the pandemic stimulated further ... • Pandemic Scholars Circle: Deepening Community during Isolation

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: a few months into the covid-19 pandemic, Marilyn Fischer and Judy Whipps were commiserating about an isolated future that seemed to stretch out with no end in sight. They came up with the idea of starting their own Scholars Circle, inspired by the November 2019 Feminist Pragmatist Colloquium in Rochester, New York. At that conference, participants could submit abstracts of work at any stage of development. Participants were grouped in small circles of three or four, with each person sharing their work and giving feedback and suggestions to the others. Participants at that conference were uniformly enthusiastic about how this format enriched their thinking and gave them a sense of support and camaraderie. As one of ... Read More

Abstract: early march 2020: i'm in a french village on the Mediterranean near the Spanish border. The outdoor marché, thronged, is active twice a week. The cafés are crowded. On my morning walk, I am buoyed by the sounds of schoolchildren. The village's only grocery, a small outlet of a major chain, is well-stocked.Mid-March: pandemic. "Non-essential" vendors are banned from the marché. The cafés are shuttered. The school is closed. The little store has depleted shelves. There is a mandate to stay home. Anyone venturing out must carry an attestation certifying the reason for being in public.Fortunately, there is the Internet. There are books. The local wine store offers home delivery.
