  • The Bays of East Attica Regional Survey 2020–2021: New Evidence for
Settlement, Production, and Exchange in Porto Rafti, Greece, from
           Prehistory to Late Antiquity

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Bays of East Attica Regional Survey (BEARS) is an archaeological research project focused on the area around the bay of Porto Rafti in Greece. The project seeks to contribute new archaeological and historical knowledge about human activity and cultural heritage in the region from prehistory to the present day through documentation and analysis of surface remains. In addition, the project is designed to generate results pertinent to several specific areas of inquiry: the economic and cultural interface between Attica and the Cyclades in earlier prehistory (Final Neolithic period and Early Bronze Age), Late Helladic IIIC (LH IIIC) settlement patterns, and the chronological scope of human activity on the Koroni ... • A Judgment of Parodies' ‘Momus’ on a Black-Figure Hydria
           in Chicago

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Momus is an elusive god. Only sporadically found in literature before the Hellenistic period, this divinity, the personification of μῶμος (blame and censure), is vanishingly rare in ancient visual culture. In her entry for Momus in the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae, Simon lists just one secure appearance of the god in extant ancient art,1 identifying him in a Judgment of Paris scene on a late sixth-century Attic black-figure hydria of the Leagros Group, which is now in Chicago. Her argument has been well received; for example, Lemos has recently written that the relevant figure is “now plausibly and perhaps decisively” identified as Momus.2 If this identification is correct, the Chicago hydria ... • At the Cutting Edge of Identity: Re-Examining the Craft Imagery of Tomb 29
from the Isola Sacra Necropolis, Ostia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ever since its initial description by Guido Calza, Tomb 29 from the Isola Sacra Necropolis at Ostia has been associated with blacksmithing. This tomb is otherwise a typical columbarium tomb, distinguished by the presence of three separate terracotta relief panels on its walls that identify the tomb’s occupant as a professional craftsman. From the combination of work scenes and collections of tools portrayed on these panels, Calza identified their subject as a ferramentarius, a blacksmith who made and sold iron tools.1 Although he offered only limited commentary on this imagery, this interpretive precedent has nonetheless influenced subsequent discussions of this tomb that continues to be described as the funerary ... • Socrates by William J. Prior (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This book is meant as an introduction to the philosophy of Socrates as presented by Plato. Professor William Prior does a fine job of completing this task, and his text would serve as an admirable introduction for anyone who has not read much (or any) Plato but is interested in Socratic philosophy. Clear synopses of the shorter dialogues provide an excellent beginner’s synoptic access to those unfamiliar with Plato’s texts or Socratic ideas. The book would also not be amiss as a study aid for undergraduate students enrolled in a class on Plato and Socrates, as Prior composes clear, easy-to-follow prose, and the work is laid out in a logical sequence. Summaries of Platonic text are immediately followed by an ... Read More

  • Adapting Greek Tragedy: Contemporary Contexts for Ancient Texts ed. by
Vayos Liapis and Avra Sidiropoulou (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This book consists of 12 chapters as well as a lengthy introduction by Vayos Liapis and Avra Sidiropoulou that includes a substantial historical overview of the adaptation of ancient Greek tragedy by Liapis. The book’s first section, “Definitions, Conceptual Foundations, Ethics,” has four papers that largely focus on how we think about and discuss adaptation. Then there’s an “interlude” of interviews that Sidiropoulou conducted with three theatre practitioners; namely, Charles Mee, Suzuki Tadashi, and Ivo van Hove. Following the interlude, the second part, “Adaptation in the Page and the Stage,” focuses on a range of specific contemporary adaptations of ancient Greek tragedy and has eight chapters.Anyone working ... Abstract: This collection of essays is the result of a 2016 conference hosted by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Benaki Museum in Athens. The essays describe the activities of the DAI and of German archaeologists between 1874 and 1933; that is, from the inauguration of the Athens branch of the institute to the seizure of power by the Nazis. The volume contains an introduction (in German) by the editors and 17 essays, six of which are in English, four in German, and seven in Greek. Each contribution is followed by abstracts in English, German, and Greek.1 The structure consists of four thematic blocks:“Das DAI Athen: Strategien, Innovationen und Umgang mit neuen Herausforderungen” (The DAI Athens: ...
