  • Solarpunk Futures (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We’re solarpunks because the only other options are denial or despair.Utopian Studies, Futures, and Anticipatory Studies all focus, if in different ways, on the past, present, and (alternative) futures. Utopian narratives anticipate, to cite Abensour, “what is different, the wish for the advent of a radical alterity here and now.”1 A tool that all disciplines use is storytelling—utopias as narratives by definition, Futures and Anticipatory Studies as critical and inquisitive tools. The Solarpunk Futures game taps into these disciplines by creatively exploring still-possible (Solarpunk) or radically new worlds and societies (utopia). The Solarpunk Surf Club is an artists’ collective that has dedicated its work to the ... • Architecture and Anarchism: Building without Authority by Paul Dobraszczyk
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Visionary architecture is a longstanding part of utopianism, a tangible expression of the utopian imagination. Anarchism is also an essential element in the pantheon of utopian thought and action, since by its nature utopianism, in imagining a better way to be and do, inherently criticizes and undermines the dominant social order. In his latest book Paul Dobraszczyk explores examples of what he calls building without authority, building in a new and often startling fashion, typically contravening established architectural conventions, even if not always skirting laws and zoning codes. The book consists of some sixty well-illustrated case studies, most of them exemplifying what could be called varying styles of ... • Introduction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This special half-issue is inspired by a passage by Indian writer, educator, and utopian experimenter Rabindranath Tagore in his The Religion of Man (1931), which Tagore first delivered in 1930 as the Hibbert Lectures at the University of Oxford:Man, in his mission to create himself, tries to develop in his mind an image of his truth according to an idea which he believes to be universal, and is sure that any expression given to it will persist through all time . . . This ideal life dwells in the prospective memory of the future. The set of four articles in this issue is particularly focused on transcultural utopian imagination with nodal point in South Asia, with the transnational space of Bengal (spanning the ... • Transcultural Utopian Imagination and the Future: Tagore, Gandhi, Andrews,
and India–Britain Entanglements in the Early 1930s

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: For our physical life has its thread of unity in the memory of the past, whereas this ideal life dwells in the prospective memory of the future. This article focuses on transcultural utopian imagination of social futures in early twentieth-century India and Britain, with Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), and his friend and associate M. K. Gandhi (1869–1948) at the center. The passage quoted is from The Religion of Man by Tagore (1931) which deals with the “idea of the humanity of our God, or the divinity of Man the Eternal,” a text written during Tagore’s stay at Woodbrooke, a Quaker residential educational institution in Selly Oak, Birmingham, in the Midlands in England.1 Tagore and Gandhi’s British friend C. F. ... Read More

  • Transcultural Utopias: Exploring the Afterlives of Rabindranath Tagore,
Visions of Utopia, and Aesthetic Formulations in Cultural Diaspora
           Practice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A time of historical crisis and global transition is also the time for social dreaming, poised between despair and hope, reality and imagination. Rabin-dranath Tagore wrote in his last speech in April 1941, As I look around, I see the crumbling ruins of a proud civilization strewn like a vast heap of futility. And yet I shall not commit the grievous sin of losing faith in Man. Perhaps that dawn will come from this horizon, from the East, where the sun rises. A day will come when unvanquished Man will retrace his path of conquest, despite all barriers, to win back his lost human heritage.1This article will explore Tagore’s vision of the future, which is continuously engaged with and drawing from the past, in ... • Decolonizing the Feminist Utopia: Interfaith Sisterhood and Anticolonial
Feminist Resistance in Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s Sultana’s Dream and
           Padmarag

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The “critical utopia” or the feminist utopia that emerged as a notable literary phenomenon in the United States and Canada through the last decades of the twentieth century was a vehicle for the propagation of feminist ideals and the pursuit of feminist goals in tandem with the now heavily critiqued second wave feminist movement. Some of the most well-known works of feminist utopian literature such as Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), Joanna Russ’s The Female Man (1975), Samuel R. Delany’s Trouble on Triton: An Ambiguous Heterotopia (1976), and Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time (1976) have extended the boundaries of the discourse on utopianism by visualizing utopian political possibility ... • Gestures of Refusal: Utopian Longings in Satyajit Ray’s Goopy Gyne

Abstract: [O Mister Minister, Mister Conniver, stay put!] read a banner at a protest organized on September 20, 2019, by the students and faculty members of Jadavpur University (JU), India. The protest was directed against the violence that has been visited on JU the day before, which these students and teachers characterized as “fascist terror.”1 The previous day, Babul Supriyo—a minor playback singer from Bollywood and then a junior minister in the Indian government headed by Narendra Modi of the Hindu-Right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—had clashed with students of JU.2 Following this, about 200 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the BJP’s student wing, “stormed the [university] premises armed with ... • “A simple post-growth life”: The Green Camp Gallery Project as Lived
           Ecotopia in Urban South Africa

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Cities all over the world are key points for transformation. In Africa the largest share of the population lives in cities, which are perceived as a place of innovation and growth, and as an expression of global modernity.1 The emerging middle class in South Africa confirms this perception with its cosmopolitan lifestyle.2 What is often overlooked is that urban spaces are also related to spatial segregation, inequality, environmental pollution, waste disposal, displacement of nature, crime, and insecurity.3 Cities are thus shaped by numerous and contradictory dynamics. This is also the case in Durban, South Africa. Durban is the largest city (3.5 million people) in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and ... Read More

  • American Transcendentalism and the Twenty-First Century

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: American Transcendentalism, as a nineteenth-century intellectual/social movement, has the potential to substantially inform the emerging academic debate with respect to post-liberalism that is taking place in the political and social sciences and political philosophy. Additionally, Transcendentalism can be applied to academic deliberations with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic and its social, economic, and political impact. In short, transcendentalism can be cast as deeply relevant to the twenty-first century. While American Transcendentalism is a very abstract and multifaceted term, at the broadest level it is a modern iteration of Platonism. This definition requires a definition of Platonism in its own right. ... Read More

  • The Double Role of Architecture: The Critical and Therapeutic Potency of
           Unbuilt Utopias

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Today more than ever there is no theory without utopia. Otherwise, a person is content to record what he sees before his eyes; he does not go too far—he keeps his eyes fixed on so-called —reality: he is a realist . . . but he does not think! There is no theory that neither explores a possibility nor tries to discover an orientation. The architects, like the town planners know this perfectly well. The usual task of architects is to manufacture physical contexts, at a territorial, urban, and building scale, for humans to dwell in. But the work of architects also influences and molds the way our societies function through the shaping of space. As Harvey (2000) quotes a Greek saying, “we make the house and the house ... • Space, Utopia and Indian Decolonization: Literary Pre-figurations of the
           Postcolony by Sandeep Banerjee (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The book under review examines how a number of key literary and cultural texts, spanning the nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, from Britain and India (mainly Bengal), imagined the world after decolonization. The book, by an academic working in English and South Asian literary studies, uses literary and cultural geographical approaches, grounded in cultural and historical materialism. It also makes a fresh contribution to utopian studies, especially in the methods we use in this field. The book focuses on what the first chapter evocatively terms, in its title, spatial desire in the age of empire. Taking inspiration from the work of scholars such as Edward Said and Raymond Williams who analyzed cultural ... Read More
