      The ionizing radiation has risky health effects upon human exposure. Several types of cancers are reported to be arising as a result of overexposure to sparsely ionizing radiation such as X-Ray. A portable environment radiation monitor was employed to quantify the total amount of scattered radiation at the radiography department. The problem of scattered X-Rays from diagnostic X-Ray machines at Sebha Medical Center has been investigated. The scattered X-Rays are detected using a portable end-window Geiger-Muller counter and the count rate is measured in terms of intensity per minute. The relationship between three factors which are horizontal distance from center of X-Ray machine, X-Ray tube voltage, exposure and counting rate has been determined for many different cases of exposed patient parts. The findings show that there is overexposure in some cases arising from unintentional exposure to scattered X-Rays. A significant amount of the scattered X-Rays from diagnostic X-Ray machine are detected. While the X-Ray tube voltage increases, the counting rate increases. As the exposure time increases, the counting rate also increases. However, as the horizontal distance from the center of X-Ray focus-head increases, the counter rate decreases. For the chest X-Ray exposure, higher count rate is measured at 1.20 m and 1.70 m respectively. These results indicate that a higher overexposure of exposed patients is observed.

      In the present study, the use of 2-Amino-3-(4-bromophenylazo)-8, 9-Dihydro-7H-pyrazolo[1,5-a]quinazolin-6-one (PQ) as the ligand was evaluated in the liquid-liquid (Water-carbon tetrachloride) extraction to extract and purify U (VI) from its uranium concentrate. The characterization of this ligand was carried out using elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR, Ms and 13C. The extraction, experiments were carried out to determine the optimum conditions of uranium extraction; these controlling conditions include contact time, organic concentrations and O/A ratio for maximum extraction of uranium metal ions by ligand, as well as extraction kinetics. The McCabe - Thiele diagram was constructed to define the theoretical stages of extraction mixer settler process. The maximum extraction efficiencies were achieved by using an aqueous solution at 0.52% (PQ) in carbon tetrachloride as a diluent at pH 1.5, (1/1) O/A and 5 min. contact time at room temperature. The effects of the stripping agent type, contact time and O/A ratio on the stripping efficiency of U (VI) from the loaded extraction were also applied. The purified uranium cake was finally obtained from the strip solution by the addition of sodium hydroxide as a precipitating agent and finally the uranium purity is 74.3 % in sodium diuranate cake.
