  Sectorizing a network into district metered areas is a key technique for water loss reduction. Sectorization is a well-studied problem. Optimization techniques can be used to find solutions to such problems, but doing so within a reasonable time remains a challenge. We introduce two heuristic tricks to modify a basic evolutionary algorithm that solves this problem. The tricks reduce the time needed to find good solutions, but also lead to solutions that better match drinking water practice.

  This work evaluates the use of a device inspired by the human taste system to carry out quantitative and qualitative monitoring of drinking water samples. The results showed an excellent ability to discriminate the samples and predict some analytical parameters of interest in controlling their physicochemical quality. This made it possible to conclude that the device called smart electronic tongue has a high technological potential for monitoring drinking water.

  Drinking water problems are pervasive in developing nations. In the rural areas of these nations, only contaminated water is available. A device that purifies water by distillation can solve this problem; however, the harvest is location-specific. Since climate varies by location, the device was tested under a tropical climate to ascertain the seasonal effect of harmattan on its harvest. Harmattan effects were established. The reliability of the device during harmattan season is now understood.

  This study aimed to prepare a cellulose paper impregnated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the purpose of water purification (disinfection (removal of several types of bacteria) and filtration). Sliver nanoparticles used in this work exhibited a broad size distribution with highly reactive facets. AgNP paper provided rapid and effective bactericidal activity.

  A hybrid algorithm (GA-ANN) was used to predict the turbidity values in the drinking water plant in Al Qusayr. Several models built and fitness detected for each, the network with the highest fitness selected, then the network was constructed. The network was able to predict turbidity with high accuracy, R (0. 9940) and a RMSE of 0.1078. And 4 equations for determining the value of the residual aluminum was obtained using Gene expression, the best equation results were, RMSE = 0.02, R = 0.9.

  Pipe burst in water distribution networks is an inevitable event. Pipe burst prediction helps to manage the maintenance of pipes, which reduce costs, water consumption and increase water network reliability. In this paper, we implement, compare and evaluate five artificial intelligence and machine learning methods for pipe failure prediction. Pipe failure data were collected during an eight-year-period in a real case study. Finally, the best method is selected based on some error criteria.

  Providing drinkable potable water from saline or heavily polluted water using renewable energy is further explored. Solar desalination is an eco-friendly, accessible and affordable technology. We show that there is a direct relationship between and huge dependency on solar still daily distillate yield in the solar radiation intensity and the temperature difference between the condensing inner glass cover and the water. Hence, we hope to have drinkable water for all using solar power technology.

  We investigated the effect of long exposure to sunlight (as practised by retailers and peddlers in Bauchi State, Nigeria) of commercial plastic-bottled drinking water. The levels of physical/chemical parameters were measured for five brands, and it was found that levels of pH, antimony, nitrates, and bisphenol A changed significantly as exposure time increased, thus highlighting the importance of proper monitoring of storage and retailing of plastic bottle products to safeguard consumer health.

  Our work investigates the settling behaviour of natural granules applied in drinking water treatment plants. We show that these natural granules have a tendency to show a considerably large deviation in terms of their settling velocity; this is contrary to what many velocity prediction models assume. In the current work, we present and discuss the factors which contribute to the observed deviation in drag and settling velocity. It connects full-scale operations and research.

  Thin film composite forward osmosis membranes were prepared on a polysulfone substrate (17 wt %) as a support layer, via an interfacial polymerization reaction, to form a polyamide selective layer. The effect of the reaction times was investigated. The best results were found to be at 5 min for m-phenylenediamine and 1 min for trimesoyl chloride reaction times, respectively. These results gave the best performance of forward osmosis membranes in terms of water flux and salt rejection.

  In this research, reliability indicators of water distribution networks are evaluated under pipe failure conditions. The case studies include two benchmark and one real-life water distribution networks in Iran with more hydraulic constraints. Some important reliability indicators are presented such as resilience index, network resilience, modified resilience index and minimum surplus head index. GANetXL is used to do one-objective and two-objective optimization of the previously mentioned water distribution networks in order to not only minimize the cost, but also maximize the reliability indicators. Moreover, the results of a statistical analysis for each pipe is used to determine the sensitive pipes that are of the most failure probability. GANetXL is an optimization tool in Excel environment and works based on Genetic Algorithm. GANetXL has the capability of being linked to EPANET (Hydraulic simulation software). The results obtained clearly show that network resilience index is of poor performance when compared with the other indexes under pipe failure conditions, especially in real-life networks that include small pipe diameters. It was also showed that if a water distribution network was optimized only in terms of cost, there would be an unacceptable pressure drop at some nodes in case of pipe failure.

  This study analysed the impact of extreme weather events, water quality deterioration, and a growing drinking water demand on the sustainability of drinking water supply in the Netherlands. The results of the case studies were compared to sustainability issues for drinking water supply that are experienced worldwide. This resulted in a set of sustainability characteristics describing drinking water supply on a local scale in terms of hydrological, technical, and socio-economic characteristics.

  This research investigated sixteen physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters to assess the drinking water in Rajshahi City Corporation supplied by Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. The results observed pH and hardness within the allowable limit, an extreme level of iron and manganese, a negligible amount of arsenic, lesser dissolved oxygen and residual chlorine, and the undesirable odour in the samples as per Bangladesh Drinking Water Standards and World Health Organization.

  One of the crucial aspects of developing a forward osmosis (FO) process is making a suitable membrane. In this work, an FO membrane was synthesized by making a polyamide selective layer on an electrospun nanofiber support layer. The prepared thin-film composite (TFC) membrane showed good performance in terms of water flux and salt rejection compared to the commercially available membranes. Also, it showed other good properties, namely porosity, hydrophilicity, and mechanical strength.

  Determining the behavior of domestic water consumers can facilitate a more proactive approach to water demand management. The findings show that people with higher incomes in urban areas are using more water than people with lower incomes. The water usage depends on the living standards, family size, age, and education. Results showed that the total domestic water consumption is negatively correlated with education level.

  Access to clean and safe drinking water is a basic human right. Poor quality of drinking water is directly associated with various waterborne diseases. This study found that people in rural areas, with older household heads, and large family sizes are significantly less likely to utilize safe drinking water sources. Households with media exposure, education, women empowerment in household purchases, and belonging to the rich segment of society are more likely to utilize safe drinking water.

  In this study, we investigate numerically, using EPANET code, the leaks in a water distribution network (WDN). The old part of Casablanca (Morocco) is used as a case study. The first episode is based on a simulation of artificial leaks on the MATLAB platform using EPANET. The second was a real simulation of artificial leaks. The results obtained are compared with those of a real simulation of artificial leaks caused by the opening and closing of hydrants.
