(2005) devised a framework consisting of six enablers which nurses must undertake to provide competent, objective and specialised nursing care. This case study focuses upon two enablers: assessment and communication, with reference to a patient’s journey when admitted to a gastroenterology ward. Assessment and communication are important aspects of providing nursing care and this is demonstrated throughout this case study. Furthermore, they interlink to provide efficient nursing care; however, both are not without limitations. This is further explored throughout this case study. One of the aspects of the nursing assessment procedure is that a set of customised results are agreed, which can be achieved through established teamwork and efficient communication. The Chapelhow Framework was established around six enablers: assessment, communication, risk management, managing uncertainty, record keeping and documentation, professional judgement and decision making. These enablers help healthcare professionals including student nurses to develop their skills to the best of their ability to deliver holistic and person-centred care. These six enablers are assessment, communication, risk management, managing uncertainty, record keeping and documentation. This article discusses the preoperative care of a seventy-year-old patient undergoing cataract surgery, in relation to two enablers: assessment and communication. It will then discuss the factors which contribute to raised anxiety levels in the perioperative period, and how assessment and communication are linked. The article concludes with a discussion of the importance of holistic, person-centred care in reducing anxiety. However, studies have shown that maintaining good oral care during chemotherapy can help reduce the likelihood of this painful condition developing. Its aim is to improve the oral care of patients undergoing chemotherapy and reduce the risk of oral mucositis.
