  • Family caregivers' awareness and perceived access to formal support
care services available for older adults in Enugu State, Nigeria

    • Authors: Anthony Obinna Iwuagwu, Laura Oluchi Ugwu, Callista Chinenye Ugwuanyi , Christopher Ndubuisi Ngwu
      Pages: 12 - 20
Abstract: Globally, the number of older adults is increasing. This demographic transition is placing new demands on societies to provide comprehensive systems for the long-term care of older adults to complement the efforts of family caregivers. In line with this, we investigated the family caregivers' awareness and perceived  access to formal support care services available for older adults in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design, questionnaires were used for data collection from a sample of 195 respondents with experience of caregiving who participated in the study. The data were analyzed using the  Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version 20). Frequency and percentage distribution tables were used to represent results while chi-square (χ2) was used to test the hypothesis formulated in the study. The findings of the study show that family caregivers are aware of the support care services available for  older adults in Enugu state. Findings have also shown that respondents perceive older adults' access to formal support care services in the area as low. Finance, ignorance, and lack of social support were the perceived barriers to accessing formal support care services by older adults. It is recommended that efforts to  improve the accessibility of formal support care services for older adults should leverage on improving these perceived barriers. • The well-being of children in a single-mother headed family: a case of
           Debre Tabor, Ethiopia

    • Authors: Yosef G/Mikeal Dubale, Aleminew Abebe Mekonen
      Pages: 21 - 28
Abstract: Although the family structure has been a crucial factor to Ethiopian children's well-being at all stages of their lives, previous research has not looked into the negative effects of the state of single motherhood on their children's well-being because the way the community responds to children of single mothers varies in  different cultures. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to explore the well-being of children's growth in single mothers in different social contexts in the city of Debre Tabor, Ethiopia. A qualitative method with a descriptive multiple case study design was employed to examine children's wellbeing in single-  mother- headed households. Eleven in-depth interviews with single mothers' children were conducted. To collect data, six key informant interviews with single mothers and teachers were done in Amharic (the participants' first language), as were three focus group talks with single mothers. The data were transcribed,  translated, and thematically examined. Single mothers' informal economic survival was identified as a source of discomfort for children, and some community rites were classified as a source of neglect for their children, according to the study. Furthermore, children's concerns differ depending on the sort of single  mother, and single mothers' diverse life challenges have a variety of effects on many aspects of their children's well

           collaboration

    • Authors: Christopher Ndubuisi Ngwu , Anthony Obinna Iwuagwu
      Pages: 39 - 49
Abstract: Positive collaboration between social workers and lawyers is important in social work because law plays some critical roles in the practice of social work. The aim of this paper therefore, is to examine the needs, challenges of effective collaboration and similarities between social workers and lawyers in Nigeria, in the  service of clients so that each profession can increase its understanding of the other discipline. It considers also the location of relationship between social work and law practice and explores areas of convergence. We employed in-depth interviews (IDIs) as instruments for data collection for this study, using a  sample of 10 social work educators and 10 practicing lawyers at University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Enugu campus respectively, targeting participants with long working experience. The interviews focused on the strengths and weaknesses of collaborative models which use all of their valued knowledge, training and  ability to care for clients. The data collected were analyzed thematically. Findings showed that the law and social work professions are interwoven professions given their similarities. Results also showed the importance of collaboration between lawyers and social workers as well as the barriers that has impeded such collaboration among  professionals. It is therefore of utmost importance that right measures

  • Acculturation experiences of Ethiopian migrant returnees while they were
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    • Authors: Ephrem Yilak Dejen, Getachew Gebeyaw Tadese
      Pages: 50 - 58
Abstract: The study focused on the acculturation experiences of Ethiopian migrant returnees from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A qualitative research  approach, phenomenology design, and snowball sampling method were used in the study. The target population of the study was returnee  migrants who have acculturation experience in Saudi Arabia. The findings indicated that migrants acquired the socio-cultural practices of their host communities through interactions with institutions, friends, and employers, and that they were denied any opportunity to demonstrate their  uniqueness in the host country. Migrants are given instructions on how to behave before they reach their destination, based on the socio-cultural  conditions of the host country. Although migrants were trained to socialize based on the customs of the host community once they got to their  destination, they did not just attach themselves to the host country's cultural qualities before and throughout migration. Thus, the host country  should prohibit forced acculturation and professionals should address migrant’s culture shock.

  • Letter from the African Independent Ethics Committee (AIEC): Advice for
institutional ethics committees on process, roles, composition and
           decolonisation

    • Authors: Rugare J. Mugumbate, Tracey. B.E. Omorogiuwa, Witness Chikoko, Kabo Diraditsile
      Pages: 59 - 65
Abstract: The AIEC was set up to provide ethics advice to African researchers, initially with a bias on social work and development. Ultimately, the committee will be enlarged to include people who work with communities, African cultural experts, social scientists from other disciplines, professionals from other disciplines and  lawyers. When fully fledged, the committee will be able to provide full ethics services. It was started by the African Social Work Network (ASWNet) to address a gap that exists currently in African research, that of inadequate ethics oversight. This letter will be published three times a year, once in each third of the year. The   authors are the current members of the AIEC. In this first ethics letter, we provide a brief review of literature on African ethics, provide key definitions and advice to ethics on the process of developing committees, roles of stakeholders, composition and decolonising.
