      The early exposure to Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), puts children’s socio-emotional development in jeopardy and can entail long term deleterious aftermaths on their bio-psycho-social health. Although being able to integrate emotions coherently into personal narratives facilitates the elaboration of the experience and helps well-being, the prerequi-sites for narrative emotion regulation are compromised in adverse situations where the interactions with the caregivers are dysfunctional or dangerous. The current paper will address the developmental issues in narrative emotion regulation encountered by children reared in adverse environments and it will illustrate how scaffolding children to coherently integrate emotional evaluations and further perspectives in their personal narratives might help them to cope with the potentially traumatic aftermaths of ACEs.

  • Accuracy and coherence in sexually abused children: The role of age and
           PTSD

      In the legal field, narrative accuracy and coherence represent two important elements of the child’s credibility as a witness. This study aims to analyze narrative accuracy and coherence in 92 depositions of sexually abused children, in particular the effect of age and the pres-ence of post-traumatic symptoms. Each deposition was analyzed through the Narrative Categories Used to Code the Memory Reports Narrative (Bauer et al., 2014) and Coherence Coding Scheme (Reese et al., 2011). Our results confirm the significant role of age and PTSD on the content and narrative organization of childhood traumatic memories. Specifically, older and without PTSD children are better able to provide narrative reports richer in salient contextual details and a more complete description of the facts, in temporal and causal terms, with evaluations of meaning on the traumatic experience.

      This paper deals with the issue of the child testimony in case of crimes of sexual nature, and the relevant requirements to put children in the best conditions to testify. First, respect for their individuality and dignity, with particular attention to the protection of their right to psycho-physical health. Also through the examination of cases, we will refer to the good practices considered appropriate, in order to avoid effects of secondary victimization, which also affects the reliability of the statements, with possible damage to suspects. These prac-tices strengthen the rights of offended parties, including that of emotional and psychological assistance at every stage of criminal proceedings, the right to informed participation and assisted by a lawyer and a special curator. These procedures are too often disregarded by the Judicial Authorities, resulting in the risk of compromising the psycho-physical integrity of any children and of an incorrect assessment of the responsibility of the alleged offenders.

  • Crescere figlie adolescenti: effetti differenziali dell’attaccamento
           materno insicuro e della ricerca di vicinanza

      La crescita di figli adolescenti richiede che i genitori dimostrino varie competenze, e la com-petenza genitoriale (ossia il «caregiving») può essere influenzata in modo differenziato dalle sottostanti dimensioni del comportamento di «ricerca di cure» di un individuo (ossia lo stile di attaccamento dell’individuo stesso). Venticinque madri di figlie adolescenti sono state reclutate per prendere parte al disegno sperimentale trasversale per questo studio pilota. Le madri avevano un’età compresa tra i 32 e i 51 anni, con età media (± DS) di 44.72 (± 5.47) anni e ognuna di esse ha completato la Parenting Role Interview, che fornisce una valuta-zione «basata sull’investigatore» della competenza genitoriale, in aggiunta a misure self-report dello stile di attaccamento, dello stress, della depressione e del benessere individuale. I risultati hanno rivelato che una maggiore competenza genitoriale è associata ad alti livelli del costrutto specifico dell’attaccamento di ricerca di vicinanza, ma non di sicurezza dell’attaccamento. Inoltre, una peggiore salute psicologica nella madre è associata ad insicu-rezza nello stile di attaccamento, ma non a ricerca di vicinanza. Questi risultati rappresentano un trampolino di lancio per una rivalutazione dei collegamenti concettuali tra lo stile di attaccamento di un individuo e la sua competenza genitoriale. La sottostante dimensione dell’attaccamento di ricerca della vicinanza potrebbe essere particolarmente significativa per le madri di figlie adolescenti e potrebbe rappresentare un possibile obiettivo per interventi sulla genitorialità.

  • Assessing the potential for recovery of parenting skills

      This article offers a reflection on the care of families in child protection services, within the intervention process. More specifically, it aims at deepening the evaluation phase of the recoverability of parental competences, with the intention of offering indications and stimulat-ing a comparison about the most appropriate psychological intervention. The evaluative in-tervention is, in fact, a phase that follows the protection of the child and anticipates the pro-ject for the child. The article, through the description of concrete clinical experiences, offers indications about the management of the possible assessment paths and highlights the importance of considering the context in which one operates; focusing on the specific request inherent to the assessment phase of the intervention that has the function of orienting the work; identifying the appropriate tools for the psychological work.
