Abstract: It is our pleasure to introduce a set of distinctive writings that continue to spotlight the initiatives of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) and contribute to the flourishing and expanding The International Journal of Higher Education and Democracy. Volume 4 of the journal includes seven articles in three different sections, followed by an interview and three book reviews. The first section is devoted to the journal’s main focus—issues of democracy in the university. Abstract: Tajikistan, one of the five Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union, is currently looking at the “European model” as a way to transform its higher education. The European model is typically conflated in the Republic of Tajikistan (RT) with the Bologna Process that has recently launched the European Higher Education Area. “Bologna,” “credit hours,” and “bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees” are among the most common constructs to be found in Tajikistan’s educational policy documents and discourse; and the republic is making pronounced steps to be a member of Bologna.
