Abstract: Racism is a central barrier to social justice and equality that negatively influences child development (Benner et al., 2018; Causadias & Korous, 2019; Trent et al., 2019; Yip et al., 2019), with glaring evidence coming from physical health and mental health disparity research (e.g., Cooper et al., 2021; Valrie et al., 2020; Yip et al., 2019). In fact, amidst discrimination, racism is known to persistently affect the physical and mental health of youth (Hackett et al., 2020; Pina et al., 2008; Radez et al., 2020; Valrie et al., 2020). When it comes to reducing racism, African American historian Ibram X. Kendi (2019) has eloquently posed that antiracism efforts must be equated to addiction-fighting efforts in that ... Abstract: Academic achievement and motivation are important correlates of adolescent economic, social, and health outcomes (Skinner et al., 2018), yet disparities place adolescents of color at a disadvantage. For example, relative to White/European American adolescents, fewer Black/African American and Latinx adolescents graduate from high school and pursue a college degree (Cooper & Sánchez, 2016). These disparities can have long-term consequences and further perpetuate ethnic/racial stratification and oppression. To foster resistance and resilience in this context, families of color use diverse parenting strategies, such as engaging in ethnic/racial socialization (ERS) practices (Hughes et al., 2006; Wang et al., 2020). ... Abstract: Toddlerhood is an important developmental period as peer relations and social play first emerge (C. O. Eckerman et al., 1975; Howes, 2010; H. S. Ross & Lollis, 1989; H. Ross et al., 2010). During the second year of life, toddlers start forming relationships with peers and engage in cooperative play together (Hay et al., 2018; H. S. Ross & Lollis, 1989; H. Ross et al., 2010). In particular, the complexity of children’s peer interactions increases (C. Eckerman et al., 1989), and toddlers as young as 18 months engage in social pretend play with partners (Howes & Matheson, 1992). Social pretend play refers to behaviors where children engage in acting as if or that involve metarepresentations serving a ludic purpose ... Read More PubDate: 2023-08-31T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: Individuals vary widely in how readily an emotion is elicited and the intensity with which it is experienced (Davidson, 1998). Individual differences in these parameters—hereinafter referred to as emotional reactivity—are relevant to a broad array of adaptive and maladaptive outcomes, serving as a transdiagnostic index of risk across development (Gross & Jazaieri, 2014). Individuals who show maladaptive emotional reactivity—exhibiting either hyper- or hyporeactivity in their emotional responding—show heightened internalizing symptoms during childhood and adolescence (Bai & Repetti, 2018; Carthy et al., 2010; D. A. Cole et al., 2019; Tan et al., 2012). Further, longitudinal work suggests that maladaptive emotional ... Read More PubDate: 2023-08-31T00:00:00-05:00
