  • Composition of Friendship Networks and Health-Related Behaviors in
           Adolescents

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Research endeavors have shown how the characteristics of the friendship network and social dynamics affect health behavior during adolescence (Montgomery et al., 2020). In particular, systematic reviews about social network analysis conducted among adolescents have indicated that diet behaviors (Chung et al., 2017; Fletcher et al., 2011), physical activity (Chung et al., 2017; Macdonald-Wallis et al., 2012; Prochnow et al., 2020; Sawka et al., 2013), sedentary behavior (Sawka et al., 2013), alcohol consumption (Jeon & Goodson, 2015; Leung et al., 2014), smoking, sexual intercourse, and drug use (Jeon & Goodson, 2015) are influenced by the network of friends. Furthermore, social dynamics during early ages may affect ... Read More

  • The Association Between Young Adolescent Emotional Adjustment and Peer
Affiliations: Making a Case for Gender Diversity Within Peer Relationships

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The transition to adolescence is a time of significant change across multiple domains (e.g., biological, social, educational). At this time, many students' psychological and interpersonal well-being decline. Specifically, general declines in individual well-being (e.g., increased depressive symptoms, lowered self-esteem) and disruptions in peer relationships (e.g., pressures to form new friendships, hierarchical social status structures) are pervasive among early adolescents undergoing the transition to middle school (DeLay et al., 2017; Hardy et al., 2002; Juvonen et al., 2013). Accordingly, identifying aspects of the school ecology that can buffer some of these effects on students' adjustment is warranted. One ... Read More

  • Associations Between Adolescents' Subjectively Experienced Emotions and
           Psychophysiological Reactions in Achievement Situations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Emotions can be seen as multicomponent, coordinated psychological processes in which affective processes, physiologically constructed in the interaction of several interconnected domain-general brain networks (i.e., salience/ventral attention, mentalizing, executive control, dorsal attention, limbic networks), are central (Barrett & Satpute, 2013; Damasio, 2004; Fellous & LeDoux, 2005; Pekrun, 2006; Scherer, 1984). Inherently, emotions are responses to personally meaningful events or situations, changing the quality of feelings, expressive behaviors, and physiological activation (Eteläpelto et al., 2018; Kreibig, 2010; Levenson, 2014; Mauss & Robinson, 2009). For example, anxiety may involve uneasiness and nervous ... Read More

  • Mother–Child Language Style Predicts Internalizing Behaviors in Children
           Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) may be the most common type of traumatic life event that children experience (Margolin & Vickerman, 2011). Estimates indicate that 10%–20% of children are exposed (Finkelhor et al., 2009; Gilbert et al., 2009). Importantly, IPV confers significant deleterious effects on children's socioemotional well-being (Hungerford et al., 2012). For example, children who grow up in homes where IPV occurs have higher rates of internalizing and externalizing problems (e.g., Evans et al., 2008), which is an indication of underlying emotion regulation difficulties. The development of a child's independent emotion regulation is strongly affected by early parent–child coregulation (e.g. ...
