  • Child Well-Being and Peer Bullying Victimization in Post-Communist
Countries: Moderating Effects of Youth Participation in Decision-Making in
           Family and Schools

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Current literature is more concerned with the risk factors for bullying outcomes, and less attention is paid to buffering factors preventing adverse outcomes. Taking protective factors into account in anti-bullying program development can contribute to developing more proactive than reactive programming. Considering the moderate effectiveness of existing anti-bullying programs, the integration of new programming elements, such as youth participation in decision-making, should be tested. The goal of this study is to assess moderating effect of youth’s subjective perception of participation in decision-making in family and school as buffering factors against the negative effects of bullying on child subjective well-being in four post-communist countries—Estonia, Poland, Romania, and Russia. This study is based on the subset of data from the third wave of the Children’s World survey that consists of 4261 children 10–14 years of age. Our findings indicate that the children with bullying victimization who experience more participation in decision-making in their families and schools are less likely to have decreased well-being. The results of this study underline the importance of increasing effectiveness of anti-bullying efforts in a manner that can empower youths.

  • Understanding Teachers’ Likelihood of Intervention in Bullying
Situations: Testing the Theory of Planned Behavior

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Despite the expanding body of research on school bullying and interventions, knowledge of what makes teachers intervene in bullying situations remains limited. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, a theoretical framework that combined the predictive elements contributing to teachers’ likelihood of intervening was tested empirically. The model used teachers’ characteristics and behavior as predictors of their tendencies to identify, prevent, and reduce bullying. Survey data of 114 primary school teachers (Mage = 42 years, 87% female, 10 schools) and 66 secondary school teachers (Mage = 40 years, 44% female, 5 schools) were analyzed using multilevel regression models. Teachers’ attitudes (including perceived seriousness of bullying) and behavioral control (including attribution styles) were related to teachers’ likelihood of intervening in six hypothetical bullying situations. Two other main elements of the Theory of Planned Behavior (subjective norms, as measured with perceived collegial support) and the additional element of knowledge (about the distinguishing characteristics of bullying) were unrelated to the likelihood of intervention. These findings emphasize the importance of teachers’ attitudes and attribution styles to the likelihood of intervention. These can be emphasized in teacher training and anti-bullying programs to empower teachers more systematically.

  • A Psychometric Analysis of the Moral Disengagement Scale (MDS) in
Association to Bullying Roles in Colombian Youth

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The Moral Disengagement Scale (MDS) is a widely employed tool for assessing moral neutralization strategies in the context of bullying. However, studies conducted globally exhibit inconsistencies in both the factor structure and the number of items comprising the MDS. This study was conducted to assess the reliability and factor structure of the MDS within a sample of Colombian adolescents (N = 375; M age = 13.3; SD = 1.69) and to compare the use of MD mechanisms across victims, perpetrators, non-involved students, and bystanders of school bullying. To begin, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) compared the fit indices of theoretical models proposed in the existing literature. The results revealed that all previously suggested models exhibited similar fit indices, indicating that these structures could be equally applicable for evaluating various dimensions of moral disengagement among adolescent populations. In order to identify the most suitable model for our culturally specific sample, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) pointed towards a more concise 13-item version of the MDS as the optimal solution. Individuals meeting the scores for “bullies” employed more MD mechanisms compared to victims and non-involved students. There were no significant differences in MDS scores between pro-victim bystanders and those remaining passive or supporting aggressors. In light of these findings, targeting cognitive mechanisms that neutralize moral self-sanctions in perpetrators and potential bystanders of bullying may prove to be a valuable strategy in enhancing the effectiveness of anti-bullying interventions.

  • Cyberbullying Among Adolescents in East Asian Societies: Explanations
           Based on General Strain Theory

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The development of communication technology in recent years has profoundly changed adolescents’ lives. While it adds much convenience to each of their online/phone interactions, it also brings increased risk of cyberbullying. The characteristics of cyberbullying vary with new technology and cultural contexts. Most of previous research has focused on cyberbullying in Western countries and simply considered cyberbullying as the extension of traditional bullying at school. Unfortunately, this approach limited the insight to peers in the same school and relatively traditional electronic ways such as emails and text messages. Thus, the special ecology in the virtual world — the interaction with people in a diversity of platforms (e.g., online) — was generally ignored. Differing from Western cultures which encourage individualism, Confucianism and collectivism are deeply ingrained in East Asian societies. This key societal difference may lead to distinctive characteristics of cyberbullying. There are also special and unique strains derived from East Asian cultures resulting in cyberbullying. To better understand cyberbullying in East Asian societies, this paper further explains cyberbullying among adolescents based on Agnew’s general strain theory.

  • Help-Seeking Outcome Expectancies of Bullied Youth: Development and
Validation of the Victimization Help-Seeking Outcomes Scale

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract A significant proportion of peer victimized youth “suffer in silence,” not seeking help from teachers at school who can effectively address the bullying situation. Victimized adolescents may not seek help from teachers due to potential negative personal, social, or situational consequences and because they anticipate that seeking help will not lead to any positive outcomes. The current study aimed to develop and validate the Victimization Help-Seeking Outcomes Scale (VHSOS), a self-report measure of anticipated outcomes of help-seeking for bullying victimization. Data collected from 585 Canadian adolescents aged 14–19 were examined in the study. Participants completed the VHSOS in addition to measures of bullying involvement, peer relationship quality, relative power in peer relationships, shame, hopelessness, and help-seeking (intentions and behaviors). Exploratory structural equation modeling was conducted to extract factors and test measurement invariance. A three-factor model of the VHSOS best fit the data. Adolescents perceived potential help-seeking benefits, personal/social costs, and situational costs to seeking help for bullying victimization. The VHSOS demonstrated strong measurement invariance across gender and age. Boys and younger adolescents perceived greater social costs to seeking help than girls and older adolescents, respectively. The VHSOS subscales demonstrated good internal consistency (α = .85–.89) as well as discriminant and convergent validity with peer relationship quality, relative power, shame, hopelessness, and help-seeking. The VHSOS is a psychometrically valid measure that can be used to assess youths’ perceptions of possible outcomes of help-seeking.

  • Just as Violent: Cyberbullying and In-Person Violence Compared Among Arab
           Youth in Israel

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study examined similarities and differences between adolescent involvement in cyberbullying and in-person violence from a socio-ecological perspective. It explored the associations between individual (gender, age, religiosity, and impulsivity), family (parental support, monitoring, and conflict), and contextual factors (commitment to school, affiliation with delinquent peers and exposure to community violence), on the one hand, and four types of violence: cyberbullying and three subtypes of in-person violence—severe and moderate physical violence and indirect violence—on the other. The sample included 3178 Arab students in grades 7–11 in Israel, who completed a structured survey. “In-person bullying” or face-to face violence was found to be significantly and positively associated with involvement in cyberbullying, and both bullying behaviors were found to share common predictors. Of the four types of violence, involvement in severe physical violence and cyberbullying and was the lower (28.4% and 14.1% and of students, respectively), with significantly higher rates for indirect and moderate violence (65.7% and 47.3%, respectively). The general trend found in the study was one of similarities between cyberbullying and in-person violence, especially of the severe physical type. We conclude that protecting youth against involvement in violent acts can be most effectively achieved by buffering the impact of situational and personal risk factors.

  • Applying the Bystander Intervention Model to Racial Microaggressions in
           College Students

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract We propose an innovative approach to studying interventions in racial microaggression by applying the five-step bystander intervention model (i.e., Notice the Event, Interpret the Event as Needing Intervention, Accept Responsibility, Know How to Intervene, and Act). The goals were to develop a measure of bystander intervention in racial microaggressions, explore support for a conceptual model, and measure differences between Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and White college students. The sample consisted of 336 BIPOC and 191 White participants ages 18 to 25. Participants completed online surveys reporting their engagement in each of the five steps. We found that—overall—BIPOC and White participants have similar experiences with bystander intervention in racial microaggressions. There was evidence of measurement invariance across BIPOC and White participants for the survey, similar paths between the steps on the conceptual model, and similar frequency of engagement on each of the steps. Implications for practice, research, teaching, and advocacy are provided.

  • Victimization by Bullying as a Predictor of Antisocial Behavior Among
           Adolescents

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The issue of school bullying is a pervasive global problem that results in the denial of education for millions of children and young adults (UNESCO, 2019a). The current investigation aimed to elucidate the association between victimization from bullying and antisocial conduct. A total of 314 students were involved in the study. The sample for the second part of the study on victims of bullying (n = 200) comprised 112 males and 88 girls, with ages ranging from 13 to 18 (mean age = 14.9, SD = 1.08). The study employed a purposive sampling technique, and the obtained data was subjected to statistical analysis utilizing Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis with the aid of SPSS software. The study results reveal that a significant proportion of adolescents, specifically 63.7% of participants, were subjected to victimization due to bullying for a minimum period of 1 month. This data underscores the presence of a substantial prevalence rate of bullying in India. The research moreover discovered a noteworthy correlation between victimization and the future display of antisocial conduct, encompassing physical violence, rule-breaking activities, and social aggression. The results of this study can contribute to the development of therapies aimed at preventing antisocial behavior and implementing timely interventions.

  • Bullying and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Correlating the Victimization of
High-Functioning Autism Students with Educational Practices in the Context
           of Inclusion in Primary Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Bullying and victimization in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a problem of particular importance, as this category of students is at high risk of victimization by other students, which negatively affects their psychosocial and emotional development. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rate of victimization of children with high-functioning autism (AHF) by their peers in primary school, and whether this rate correlates with teachers’ education professionals’ classroom practices for the inclusion. Data collection was conducted using two questionnaires, the Autism Inclusion Questionnaire (AIQ) (Segall & Campbell in Autism inclusion questionnaire, 2007), which explores the educational practices that teachers utilize in terms of including students with ASD in the general classroom (Segall & Campbell in Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders 6(3):1156–1167, 2012), and the questionnaire on victimization of children with ASD by their peers (Belidou in Autism spectrum disorder and victimization: teachers’ views of the association with theory of mind and friendship (Master thesis), 2017). The survey was based on the responses of 143 teachers who teach primary school students diagnosed with high-functioning ASD. The results showed that 34.3% of teachers observed that AHF children are at higher risk of victimization compared to typically developing children. Also, it was found that there are several educational practices of children with autism, which are associated with the victimization of children belonging to the high-functioning autism spectrum.

  • Development of the Moral Disengagement Bullying Behavior Scale

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract To understand the underlying cognitive processes of youth involved in bullying has been of interest in bullying literature. The mechanisms of moral disengagement have gained considerable attention in research as an underlying motive for why youth engage in bullying behaviors. The current study focused on developing a new moral disengagement measure that would incorporate the eight mechanisms of moral disengagement with bullying behaviors. The current study investigated the new measure’s psychometric properties. Factor analyses of the data resulted in a single-factor 14-item measure with evidence of good fit. Further evidence of reliability and validity for the test score interpretation was provided.

  • Balancing Emotions with Solutions: Journalists’ Resolutions to the
Challenges of Covering Bullying News Stories

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Families who experience bullying or cyberbullying often undergo complex negative emotions that can debilitate their ability to effectively respond to and cope with bullying. News stories reporting on bullying and cyberbullying can intensify these negative emotional reactions, especially hopelessness, since many news stories on bullying and cyberbullying use alarmist language to capture attention (e.g., epidemic, tragedy) or commonly report on bullying or cyberbullying stories that end in suicide (Moreno et al. in Prevention Science, 20(8), 1274–1283, 2019; Moreno et al. International Journal of Bullying Prevention, 3, 270–277, 2021). Altering the way bullying and cyberbullying news stories are written may be one avenue of intervention that can help change beliefs about bullying and decrease feelings of helplessness among families. The goal of the present study was to understand how journalists approach writing bullying news stories and identify what would help journalists produce stories that have less negative emotional impact. We recruited and conducted interviews with 20 journalists from different news mediums (70% newspaper, 45% magazine, 15% digital) and ranges of reach (60% national, 35% regional/local). We used an inductive, constant comparative, grounded theory approach to identify emergent themes among the interviews. Three themes emerged from the data: (1) balancing emotions with solutions, (2) development and distribution of resources to journalists, and (2) the role of researchers. Findings clarify what resources are needed for journalists to construct bullying and cyberbullying news stories that can help empower families and the community.

  • Exploring Bullying, Partner Violence, and Social Information Processing

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Previous research has related childhood experiences with violence to adulthood intimate partner violence (IPV). Witnessing intimate partner violence (IPV) between parents has been associated with bullying involvement, while other research on the psychological mechanisms involved has found that differences in social cognition affect how aggressive individuals interpret and may respond violently to social cues. To identify possible impacts of childhood experiences of aggression on adult relationship problems, the current study of 84 emerging adults tested hypotheses that (a) witnessing parental IPV in adolescence would predict bullying in adolescence, (b) bullying in adolescence would predict IPV in young adulthood, (c) bullying in adolescence would predict adulthood deficits in social information processing, particularly hostile attribution biases, and (d) bullying in adolescence would predict adulthood interpersonal problems. This study used linear and hierarchical regression analyses to test these hypotheses and found that witnessing parental IPV predicted the frequency of bullying victimization overall and relational bullying victimization specifically, and the frequency of bullying perpetration predicted hostile attributional biases in adulthood. Some aspects of bullying victimization were negatively associated with being unassertive, contrary to expectations. These findings contribute to a growing body of literature demonstrating the need for early intervention strategies designed to identify children and adolescents who are vulnerable to experiences with aggression, both at present and in the future.

  • The Socio-Cognitive Attitudes of Teen Bullies: Right-Wing
Authoritarianism, Moral Disengagement, and Perceived Victimization

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The current study examined the relations among socio-cognitive attitudes such as right-wing authoritarianism (submission to authority figures, aggressive behavior in the name of those authority figures, and conformance to social conventions) and moral disengagement (the justification of harmful actions) as they relate to teen bullying perpetration and victimization. Analyses tested a moderated mediation model among 212 ninth-grade students attending a public high school. Right-wing authoritarianism was directly linked to increased self-reported frequency of bullying perpetration and indirectly linked to bullying perpetration via perceptions of victimization. Both the direct and indirect effects were moderated by moral disengagement. That is, right-wing authoritarianism was only linked to higher levels of bullying perpetration when moral disengagement was also higher. Findings from the current study may help inform bullying prevention and intervention techniques as well as provide further insight regarding the etiology of bullying behaviors.

  • The Influence of an Elevated Social Rank on Prosocial Behaviour in an
Early Childhood, Outsider Population: Towards a Reduction in Bullying
           Perpetration

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract High social rank is suggested to increase bystander intervention in bullying situations. The current research explored the effect of social rank on outsider prosocial and defending behaviours. The participants were 30 preschool children with an average age of 44.6 months. Initially, outsiders were identified using the Participant Role Questionnaire and a baseline measure of their prosocial behaviour was obtained via the Preschool Social Behaviour Questionnaire (PSBQ) and the Observational Measure of Prosocial Incidents (OMPI). Following this, outsider social rank was identified using a linear ranking method and elevated (relative to the peer group) through socio-dramatic play. Using the PSBQ and OMPI, observations of these play sessions provided a second measure of prosocial and defending behaviour, from which comparisons to the initial prosocial measures were made. Multivariate analysis of variance identified that by increasing outsider social rank, prosocial behaviour significantly increased (F (9, 12) = 7.72, p = .001; Wilk’s Λ = .147, partial η2 = .853). Post hoc analysis identified that an increase in social rank significantly increased helping (p = .001), comforting (p = .021), affection (p = .002), and cooperation (p = .009). Yet, altruism and sharing behaviours were non-significantly influenced by the increase in social rank. Based on these results, the researchers propose that by elevating the social rank of the outsider population, bullying perpetration is likely to be reduced.

  • An Introduction to a Whole-Education Approach to School Bullying:
Recommendations from UNESCO Scientific Committee on School Violence and
           Bullying Including Cyberbullying

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Recommendations on preventing and addressing school bullying and cyberbullying were developed in November 2020 by a Scientific Committee gathered to advise the International Conference on School Bullying organized by UNESCO and the French Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. They address three key issues: 1) revising the definition of school bullying towards one more caring and inclusive of all forms of school bullying, 2) key components and characteristics of a comprehensive and systematic approach to bullying and cyberbullying, and 3) strategies for planning and implementing responses to cyberbullying.

  • Intersections Between Multiple Forms of Bias-Based Bullying Among Lesbian,
           Gay, Bisexual, and Queer Youth

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) youth experience more heterosexist bullying victimization than their straight peers, which contributes to mental health disparities. However, LGBQ youth may simultaneously experience other types of bias-based bullying (e.g., racist, cis-sexist, and able-ist bullying). Informed by intersectionality theory, this study describes intersections of LGBQ students’ experiences of multiple forms of bias-based bullying and explores demographic correlates of individual types and typologies of bias-based bullying. This study uses 2016 state-wide survey data from 9th and 11th grade students in Minnesota schools. The analytic sample was limited to students who reported a LGBQ sexual orientation and responded to bullying items (N = 8313). Typology indicators were six items assessing bias-based bullying in the previous 30 days (race, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ability, weight). Covariates (age, sexual orientation, assigned sex, gender identity, race, perceived gender presentation, individualized education program (IEP), weight status) also predicted class membership. A latent class analysis (LCA) was conducted, and the three-class model was best fitting, with classes characterized by high levels of all types of bias-based bullying (6.3%), gender expression and sexual orientation bullying (35.2%), and low levels of bias-based bullying (58.4%). LGBQ youth who also identified as transgender or gender diverse, had an IEP, reported perceived nonconforming gender presentation, and youth of color were more likely to belong to the multiple bias-based bullying typology. Future work should leverage an intersectional lens to design multilevel interventions and strategies to prevent bias-based bullying that attend to broader issues of stigma within school systems.

  • Bullying by Teachers Towards Students—a Scoping Review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Bullying between peers is a well-known fact and during the last 20 years there has been considerable research on this topic. A topic that has received much less attention is bullying by teachers towards students. This article aims to review the research literature that exists on this important topic. The review covers articles about teacher bullying in elementary, primary, lower, and upper secondary schools, in a retrospective, prospective, or current perspective. The results show that teacher bullying occurs within school contexts all over the world in various ways and to various extents. Although the prevalence rates of bullying behaviors from school staff towards students vary greatly, from 0.6 to almost 90%, this review clearly shows there is a need to pay more attention to this challenge. Several studies show that being exposed to teacher bullying can adversely affect a child’s physical and mental health, participation in education and working life, and sense of well-being in adulthood. There is a need to address this topic in practical work, in teacher education, and in anti-bullying programs. Teacher bullying is also an important topic for future research.

  • Cyberbullying, Self-control, Information, and Electronic Communication
Technologies: Do Adolescents Know How to Exercise Self-control on the
           Internet'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract More and more adolescents are using information and communication technologies (i.e., ITCs) in a massive and addictive way (e.g., by sending aggressive messages on social networks), driving cyberbullying trends (Fanti et al., in European Journal of Developmental Psychology, 9, 168–181, 2012). Little is known about the relationship between young people’s use of ITCs and the internet, their levels of self-control, and their involvement in cyberbullying and cyber-victimization. The aim of this study is to investigate these relationships using a sample of 264 French adolescents (142 female and 122 male) aged 11 to 15 years old. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire that measured the use of ITCs (i.e., frequency of internet use, type of device, places where participants use the internet, range of activities), as well as their respective degrees of internet addiction, self-control, cyberbullying, and cyber-victimization. The results yielded pointed to a strongly significant relationship between low self-control and cyberbullying. Furthermore, they showed a significant link between internet addiction and cyber-victimization. Grade level and sex was not found to moderate the relationships between cyberbullying and cyber-victimization and use of ITCs and self-control. These findings reinforce the importance of taking into account self-control in adolescents when designing curricula for anti-cyberbullying programs.

  • Open Science: Recommendations for Research on School Bullying

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The open science movement has developed out of growing concerns over the scientific standard of published academic research and a perception that science is in crisis (the “replication crisis”). Bullying research sits within this scientific family and without taking a full part in discussions risks falling behind. Open science practices can inform and support a range of research goals while increasing the transparency and trustworthiness of the research process. In this paper, we aim to explain the relevance of open science for bullying research and discuss some of the questionable research practices which challenge the replicability and integrity of research. We also consider how open science practices can be of benefit to research on school bullying. In doing so, we discuss how open science practices, such as pre-registration, can benefit a range of methodologies including quantitative and qualitative research and studies employing a participatory research methods approach. To support researchers in adopting more open practices, we also highlight a range of relevant resources and set out a series of recommendations to the bullying research community.
